POLITICAL GOSSIP OF THE DAY
The Country at Large is Now in Better Shape Financially than Ever Before in its History.
WASHINGTON, July 7.—The Republican party has good cause to ask the voters of the country to continue it in control of the government and to reject President McKinley. The results which have followed the application of Republican principles to the administration of the United States have not been accidental. Aside from the conditions arising from the war with Spain, no one will dispute that the nation’s affairs are far better than they were under the Democratic administration which preceded the election of McKinley. All financial and commercial conditions have improved. The riots incident to the strikes during the Cleveland administration were the acts, not of the strikers, but of starving and unemployed men.
Within two years after President McKinley was inaugurated, all of the idle of 1896 were at work, so much so that in the strikes of 1900 it is not possible for employers of labor to fill the places of men going out on strikes. Never before have strikers had so many victories over employers, and never before have employers been so able to meet the demands of strikers. In every line of employment labor there has been an advance in wages more than equal to the advance in the cost of living products. It is now seen that production has run beyond the limits of demand in many lines, and this will adjust itself by lower prices in 1901 than in 1900. The adjustment has been going on for three months, and now prices in all lines of iron materials are lower than in 1899. One year ago the trusts and large manufacturers advanced prices, and when they got them beyond reasonable limits the consumption ceased and values had to fall. Manufacturers have thus learned that they can not maintain unreasonable prices by stopping production. They have also learned that they can run their plants to full capacity if the prices of their commodities are reasonable.
The tariff for protection excludes the products of cheaper labor in other countries. The gold basis of our monetary enables the purchaser to commercial agreement entered into between the United States and Portugal. This enables us to export to Portugal, the Azores and Madeira islands at rates of duty as low as those accorded to any other country except Spain and Brazil, the following American products: Flour of cereals, except wheat; corn, wheat, lard, grease, mineral oils and their products; reaping, mowing and threshing machines; machines for compressing hay and straw; steam plows and parts of such machinery; instruments, implements and tools for the arts, for factories, agriculture and gardening.
Latest advice from Oregon show that the Republican pluralities in last month’s elections in that State were larger than at first reported. The Republican candidate for governor had a plurality of more than 10,000, almost exactly the same as it was in 1898. For Congressmen, the combined plurality of the two Republican candidates was about 11,500, or 2,800 more than the plurality given to the same candidate in 1898, and fully 10,000 larger than the straight Republican plurality on Congressmen in 1896. It should be remembered also that in 1896 there was no fusion of the opposition vote, whereas this year all the parties opposed to the Republicans formed as complete a fusion as was ever made. Besides this, Mr. Bryan had made a tour of Oregon a few weeks before the election.
Exports of American products and manufactures in May amounted to $113,-503,000, an increase of $10,000,000 over the exports in May of last year. The first eleven months of this fiscal year our total exports amounted to $1,286,-214,534, an increase of $155,585,459 over the exports in the corresponding eleven months of 1899.
Our movements of gold to and from foreign countries has been practically the same during the eleven months of this fiscal year ending with May; both the imports and exports of gold each exceeded $40,000,000.
The indications are that our total foreign trade for the fiscal year ending with this month will exceed two and one-quarter billions of dollars. For the eleven months ending with May it amounted to $2,075,000,000. Adding the average for the month of June, then this fiscal year’s import and export trade should aggregate $2,264,000,000. The excess of exports over imports should exceed $520,000,000 this year, a little more than it did in the 1899 fiscal year.
Total Cuban customs receipts, for the first four months of this year, were $5,414,963, an increase of $969,911 over the corresponding months of 1899.
Porto Rican imports during eight months ending with February amounted to $6,793,575, of which $2,000,000 worth was admitted free of duty. Exports during the same period were Fatal Fall.
Prof. Markeberg, a parachutist note, while ascending in a balloon Santa Ana on the Fourth of July from the same at a height varied estimated at from 300 to 600 feet was mangled to death. He made ascent while holding to a strap with teeth. The leather had been stitched on a sewing machine, being examined after the fall was covered to be torn at the point of sewing, the stitches having been close together. A great crowd waded the ascent, and when the hatch stricken people beheld the man they ran to get away from under.
Markeberg fell feet first for a very eradicating distance, his hands wildly support. At 200 feet from the east rolled over, and lit upon his head shoulders, being killed instantly by balloon immediately rose to a height, carrying with it the part by which the unfortunate man tended to descend.
An inquest was held, and the renter were shipped to San Francisco buryal. His wife accompanied him mains north.

The tariff for protection excludes the products of cheaper labor in other countries. The gold basis of our monetary system enables the purchaser to buy the raw materials at the lowest prices in any market in the world. The American mechanic is today without a superior on earth. He does one-third more work in a day of eight hours than the men of his trade in any part of Europe, and he does it better. He is therefore entitled to one-third higher wages than are paid in European countries which would like to compete with us for our home market. An increase of wages to American employees does not mean an increase beyond reasonable limits in prices charged the consumer. The rule is coming to be understood that wages and prices must be reasonable if the products are to be sold, and this rule is being gradually applied and adjusted between employers and employees. In no period of our history has its march been so rapid or so marked as under the administration of McKinley. Why?
No man who ever filled the Presidential office has had so broad an experience in the economic questions of labor and its products as Mr. McKinley. For thirty-five years he has watched and studied these questions and, as President, he has shaped, as far as he could, all results to the ends of justice between employee, employer and consumer of manufactured products. Years ago he saw that we were gradually changing from an agricultural to a manufacturing people. He saw that we must adjust our legislation to meet the coming change, and that such changes must be gradual, so that there would be no violent shock to any interest.

To the Public:
The California Consolidated Petroleum company has adopted the policy of redeeming, on demand, any of its treasury stock that may be offered for redemption at any time within thirty days from date of certificate, paying back every cent of the purchase price. Of 50 cents per share, and will also refund on demand, at any time within thirty days from date of first payment, all money received on installment purchases.
The object of this policy is to give the investor ample time for investigation and time in which to reconsider his investment, and further to protect his stock, as well as the stock of the company, against depreciation at the hands of mercenary speculators.
It after studying the prospectus, you wish to invest, you may remit direct to the company, with the mutual understanding that your money will be returned, on demand, in accordance with the company's pledge of redemption.

Mrs. Koster was cross-examined as follows:
Q. You saw some papers that were had there, didn't you?
A. I saw you handling some papers?
Q. You knew they came up there to get an option of the place to sell it, didn't you?
A. I didn't particularly know what you were there for.
Q. I mean, didn't you know that?
A. No, sir, I knew you were all full, therefore I didn't pay much attention to you.
Q. We all went up and left you at home, and we all went up, all the gentlemen, and looked over the property?
A. Yes, sir.
Q. And then had this conversation in the room after we came back?
A. Yes, sir; I know you were in the room talking a while, but of course I couldn't say what you were talking about.
Q. You were not in the room at all?
A. No, sir; I was there one time.
To complicate matters, the deed made by Koster to his wife was recorded before the trial came up in court, and after the case had been decided the property was sold to the Carbon Canyon Oil company, the stated price being $12,000.
The company has been organized with a capital stock of $500,000, of which its prospectus says nearly $400,-000 is treasury stock.
Stock is being advertised at 25 cents per share, but probably no development work will be attempted before title to the land has been passed upon by the Supreme Court.

The object of this policy is to give the investor ample time for investigation and time in which to reconsider his investment, and further to protect his stock, as well as the stock of the company, against depreciation at the hands of mercenary speculators.
If, after studying the prospectus, you wish to invest, you may remit direct to the company, with the mutual understanding that your money will be returned, on demand, in accordance with the company's pledge of redemption.
It is realized that there are some who cannot conveniently satisfy themselves as to the standing of the company, and who would not, without this information, feel sure that the company's pledge of redemption would be kept if return of money were demanded. Supposing you to be one of the number, the company has arranged with the Los Angeles National bank to receive and hold your money in trust for thirty days, subject to your order within that time.
According to this arrangement you may write the company ordering the number of shares you want, and instead of sending the money to the company send it to the bank. On receipt of your order and a notice from the bank that the money is there, a certificate for the shares ordered will be mailed you by registered letter, at once. By registering the letter the company will know that you have received the certificate. Send draft or money order, making same payable to the California Consolidated Petroleum company. The following is a suggestive form of instructions to the bank:
1900.
CASHIER LOS ANGELES NATIONAL BANK.
Los Angeles, Cal.
I have this day ordered the CALIFORNIA CONSOLIDATED PETROLEUM Co. to forward to me certificate for... Shares of its capital stock, and herewith enclose draft payable to said company for $... in full payment of same. Hold draft for thirty days from this date, and if I do not return said certificate and demand return of said draft within that time, you are hereby instructed to turn over to said company, said draft.
These instructions cover the case in a way fair to yourself, fair to the company and fair to the bank. If you do not use the form suggested, make your instructions clear and simple; else bank will return your money and refuse to act in the matter, for it must protect itself, as well as you and the company.
All you have to do to get your money back is to return your certificate to the Los Angeles National bank within thirty days from date, and it will be honored by the bank the same as a check.
Death Ends Long Fast.
Mrs. Sarah M. Becanon, who recently completed a fast at Santa Ana that surpassed that of Dr. Tanner, died in that city last week from the effects of a derangement of the stomach. For forty-seven days she did not taste a particle of food, her stomach refusing to retain anything whatever of a solid nature. Her only nourishment was hot water, unsweetened, of which she partook three or four glasses per day. She had no appetite and suffered no pain. Deceased was 37 years of age and the mother of three children. The family came to Santa Ana about three months ago from Nebraska, in the hope that the climate would benefit her health.
Reduced Rates East.
The Santa Fe Route will sell round-trip tickets to Chicago and return August 21st and 22d, 1900, at the very low rate of $72.50, limited to return 60 days from date of sale. Stopovers will be granted west of Missouri river on return trip within final limit. je28-4t

Prof. Markeberg, a parachutist of the while ascending in a balloon at Ana on the Fourth of July, fell to the same at a height variously estimated at from 300 to 600 feet, and managed to death. He made the fall while holding to a strap with his hand. The leather had been recently washed on a sewing machine, and on examination after the fall was discharged to be torn at the point of the fall, the stitches having been too tight together. A great crowd witnessed the ascent, and when the horror-ken people beheld the man falling ran to get away from under him. Markeberg fell feet first for a considerable distance, his hands wildly seek- seemingly to reach some means of support. At 200 feet from the earth he had over, and lit upon his head and shoulders, being killed instantly. The moon immediately rose to a great light, carrying with it the parachute which the unfortunate man had in need to descend.
Inquest was held, and the remains were shipped to San Francisco for trial. His wife accompanied the reins north.
Markeberg was a well-known aeronaut and tight-wire performer, and during the day walked upon a tight wire. The delight of many people before ascension which resulted in his death.
During last May an infant child of neighbor was suffering from cholera antum. The doctors had given up hopes of recovery. I took a bottle Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and arrhhoea remedy to the house, telling me I felt sure it would do good if according to directions. In two days' time the child had fully recovered. Cannon Cracker.
Fred Opp, the ten-year-old son of George Opp of Santa Ana, found a large mamite firecracker on the street. He took it home and lighted the short fuse the family stove. The cracker extended in his hand, mangling it so that had to be amputated. It tore a hole in the child's left breast and knocked at his left eye. The little boy is expected to die.
At Bed Time
Take a pleasant drink, the next morning I feel bright and my complexion is better. My doctor says it acts gently on the stomach, liver and kidneys, and a pleasant laxative. It is made from tea.
Genuine Reciprocity.
No plank in the Republican platform will more strongly commend itself to the voters than the reference to reciprocity, which is in the following language:
We favor the policy of reciprocity, so directed as to open our markets on favorable terms for what we do not ourselves produce in return for free foreign markets.
That doctrine will be indorsed by every protectionist. It is the interpretation of "reciprocity" which we long have sought and mourned because we found it not. It definitely excludes such travesties of reciprocity as the French, Argentine, Portuguese and other treaties in which some American interests have been compelled to suffer injury in order that others might profit.
In the absence of an explicit definition of reciprocity in previous Republican platforms it has been possible under the guise of "reciprocity" to negotiate treaties of this kind which were ill advised, unjust and destructive to the principle of protection.
The Republican party now stands committed to sacrifice no American interest for the sake of promoting foreign trade. That will precisely suit the fruit growers and wool growers of California, who have usually been selected as victims when sacrifices were to be offered. The intent of the Republican party in regard to reciprocity matters is now stated in unequivocal terms, and no American interest need fear while that party is in power. It is a happy ending to a controversy which has been annoying, and will solidify the party in this State and elsewhere.
A Good Cough Medicine.
Many thousands have been restored to health and happiness by the use of Chamberlain's Cough remedy. If afflicted with any throat or lung trouble, give it a trial, for it is certain to prove beneficial. Coughs that have resisted all other treatment for years have yielded to this remedy and perfect health been restored. Cases that seemed hopeless, that the climate of famous health resorts failed to benefit, have been permanently cured by its use. For sale by Derge, druggist.

The Bridal Feast
Is not infrequently followed by a long, enten period of enforced fasting and fleshly mortification. The cheek grows hollow, the eyes are dull and deep ingled, and the step is slow and languid. There is an "all dragged-out feeling," which makes life an utter burden. The great functional changes which follow marriage are not usually anticipated, or the wifeily suffering might be avoided.

Behold, an advertiser went forth to sow. And when he sowed, some seed fell into handbills and dodgers, and the street cleaner came and gathered them up. Some fell among concert and theater programs, and the people being interested in the performance and not in bargains, they were left on the seats or crumpled and thrown on the floor. And some fell among fake schemes and gift enterprises, and popular contempt sprang up and choked them. But some fell into legitimate newspapers, which found their way into the homes of the people who had time to read them, and they brought forth fruit, some 100 fold, some 60 fold, some 30 fold. Who hath ears to hear let him hear.

The stock of the California Consolidated Petroleum Company, now 50 cents per share, will soon be advanced to one dollar per share, its par value. This advance will be stable, because the revenues will justify it, and because the company is strong enough to maintain it.
It can never be worth less than fifty cents per share under the Company's permanent policy of gold redemption.
Any corporation that has faith in itself and in its future, and that intends to advance the price of its stock, can well afford to thus protect its shareholders, for in protecting them it protects itself, for they are the company.
The California Consolidated Petroleum Company owns 10,000 acres of the cream of the oil fields between Oakland and San Diego.
It owns royalties on 5,000 acres leased to capitalists.
It owns 2,500,000 shares of stock in fifty selected companies.

We divide your Risks, and Multiply Your Profits.
The rich man buys stock in many oil companies to protect himself from loss in any one that may fail.
The poor man buys the stock of one company and takes his chances of success or failure.
California Consolidated Petroleum Company
Makes it possible for the poor man to protect himself as does the rich man, for a single share in the California Consolidated Petroleum Company represents an interest in FIFTY companies and an interest in 10,000 acres of oil land, and royalties on 5000 acres.
By giving you an interest in FIFTY companies, and in these lands and royalties, we divide your risks, and thus we MULTIPLY your profits.
California is richer in oil than it ever was in gold. Its annual oil output will soon exceed in value its annual gold product. Millions of dollars are being made in California oil. People owning a small block of oil stock have suddenly found themselves rich. As an instance of this the stock of the Home Oil Company which sold originally at a nominal figure made its owners over $5000 per share. An investment in this Company is at least safe, and it may mean ease and comfort for life.
The small stockholder is absolutely protected. He cannot be assessed or frozen out. The Company's stock is NON-ASSESSABLE and there is no stockholder's liability.
Stock is certain to go to $1 in 90 days, and may go to $5 by January. He is lucky who gets the stock at fifty cents per share.
Why buy the stock of an oil company having limited resources when you can in one company invest in the entire oil field of California? Why do it?
The California Consolidated Petroleum company has men behind it of capital and high reputation. Their names are not only a guarantee of the honest handling of the money but of the success of the company.
This company is not a trust. It is not connected directly or indirectly with the Standard Oil company, all rumors to the contrary.
