SCHOOL CENSUS FIGURES. Probably the annual school census is the best means of judging population we have in California, next to the official census, which only comes once in ten years. The school census is probably a safer basis to figure on than the vote, because that always varies with local conditions, and then there is a large per cent of voters in the State who have no families. The Riverside Press has just completed its annual compilation of the school census returns for the larger towns of Southern California outside of Los Angeles. The figures are as follows, for children between 5 and 17 years of age, last year's census being given for purposes of comparison: | | | | :--- | :--- | | 1900. | 1899. | | San Diego | 3,468 | 3,628 | | Pasadena | 2,822 | 2,903 | | Riverside | 2,143 | 1,986 | | Santa Barbara | 1,778 | 1,785 | | San Bernardino | 1,721 | 1,840 | | Pomona | 1,495 | 1,298 | | Santa Ana | 1,356 | 1,217 | | Redlands | 1,183 | 1,064 | | Santa Monica | 774 | 641 | | Long Beach | 728 | 605 | | Anaheim | 724 | 659 | | Ventura | 722 | 660 | | Ontario | 641 | 660 | | Colton | 544 | 513 | | Orange | 466 | ... | | Chino | 451 | 454 | Only six towns—San Diego, Pasadena, Santa Barbara, San Bernardino, Ontario and Chino—according to the mathematician of the Press, show a loss, and the total loss is less than 400. The gain in the other towns is over 1000, making a net gain of over 600, which is a very good showing for a dry year. Riverside gained 153 children; last year that place gained 164, so that it is keeping up the march of progress in splendid shape. Figuring on the usual basis of 4½ population to each census child the population of the cities named would be as follows: | | | | :--- | :--- | | San Diego | 15,060 | | Pasadena | 12,699 | | Riverside | 9,643 | | Santa Barbara | 8,001 | | San Bernardino | 7,744 | | Pomona | 6,728 | | Santa Ana | 6,102 | | Redlands | 5,323 | | Santa Monica | 3,483 | | Long Beach | 3,276 | | Anaheim | 3,258 | In the Museum. The Giant—What has become of the strong man who could lift a horse? The Midget—I don't know. The last time I saw him he was trying to raise a dollar. A Minister's Mistake. A city minister was recently handed a notice to be read from his pulpit. Accompanying it was a clipping from a newspaper bearing upon the matter. The clergyman started to read the extract and found that it began: "Take Kemp's Balsam, the best cough cure." This was hardly what he had expected, and after a moment's hesitation, he turned it over, and found on the other side the matter intended for the reading. Reduced Rates East. The Santa Fe Route will sell round-trip tickets to Chicago and return August 21st and 22d, 1900, at the very low rate of $72.50, limited to return 60 days from date of sale. Stopovers will be granted west of Missouri river on return trip within final limit. je28-4t A Wedding on the Cards. "My queen!" fondly exclaimed the infatuated youth. "My Jack," softly responded the blushing maiden. A Good Cough Medicine It speaks well for Chamberlain's Cough Remedy when druggists use it in their own families in preference to any other. "I have sold Chamberlain's Cough Remedy for the past five years with complete satisfaction to myself and customers," says Druggist J. Goldsmith, Van Etten, N.Y. "I have always used it in my own family both for ordinary coughs and colds and for the cough following in gripe, and find it very efficacious." For sale by P. A. Derge, druggist. California Consolidated Petroleum Company. This is an age of consolidation, and the California Consolidated company is born of this successful principle. The "ten-cent" oil companies are of few days and full of trouble. They must strike oil in their first wells or burst, for with their money gone in a dry hole their stock is killed. If they survive they will be swallowed by the California Consolidated or the Standard, for such is the history of the oil business. There is only room for two oil concerns like the California Consolidated and the Standard on the Pacific Coast. These two giants will inevitably control the oil business of California, and it is those wise enough to see this who are buying the stock of the California Consolidated Petroleum company, whose stock is likely, ere long, to make its hold rich. He That Any Good Would Win! Should have good health. Pure, rich blood is the first requisite. Hood's Sarsaparilla parla, by giving good blood and good health, has helped many a man to success besides giving strength and courage to women who, before taking it, could not even see any good in life to win. Hood's Sarsaparilla Never Disappoints Money in the United States cheaper than anywhere else in the world. At the market price in April the average earnings for our 4½ cent bonds of 1925 were 2.244 per cent for the 4's of 1907 the earnings were 1.857 per cent; for the 3's, 1.738 per cent; for the 5's, 1.452 per cent. German 3¼ per cents sold at $9£½ to £9£; German 3¾ at $86 to $86¼ so that the earnings to the buyer were more than the interest stated. The premium British Consols is about 1 per cent; on the French Rentes 1 per cent; their earnings vary a little above face interest. Jordan's "AAAI" brand of English Cutlery is the strictly up-to-date cutlery for twentieth century people. The sugar trust did not get the price of $14,000,000 with which the Democrats tried to present it under the job resolution of Congressman Richard Tennessee. His idea was to wipe out the tariff on all sugar brought into United States from Cuba and Puerto Rico, the duties on which last year ceeded $14,000,000. As the whole this sugar is bought by the sugar trade and its allies, there would have been nice little sum to divide among the monopoly's stockholders had the Democratic resolution passed the House. At Bed Time I take a pleasant drink, the next morning I feel bright and my complexion better. My doctor says it acts great on the stomach, liver and kidneys; is a pleasant laxative. It is made from herbs and is prepared as easily as it is called Lane's Medicine. All doctors sell it at 25 and 50 cents. La Family Medicine moves the bed each day. If you cannot get it send a free sample. Address: Oratorio Woodward, Le Roy, N.Y. Figuring on the usual basis of 41 population to each census child the population of the cities named would be as follows: San Diego... 15,006 Pasadena... 12,699 Riverside... 9,643 Santa Barbara... 8,001 San Bernardino... 7,744 Pomona... 6,728 Santa Ana... 6,102 Redlande... 5,323 Santa Monica... 3,483 Long Beach... 3,276 Anaheim... 3,258 Ventura... 3,249 Ontario... 2,884 Colton... 2,448 Orange... 2,097 Chino... 2,029 The national census will furnish an interesting means of testing the correctness of these figures. It is believed that they will be found too high, and that 4 rather than 41 will be found to be the highest multiplier that can be used in figuring population from school census. If Riverside, for instance, runs over 8000 in population, the Press will be agreeably disappointed. The school census of the several counties of Southern California is as follows: Los Angeles... 47,527 San Diego... 7,850 San Bernardino... 6,815 Orange... 5,849 Santa Barbara... 4,981 Riverside... 4,796 Ventura... 2,969 This would indicate a population in round numbers as follows: Los Angeles... 214,000 San Diego... 34,000 San Bernardino... 31,000 Orange... 26,000 Santa Barbara... 22,000 Riverside... 22,000 Ventura... 13,000 This would indicate a population for Southern California of over 350,000 at least, or nearly enough for two Congressmen. Fresno is looming up among the smaller cities of California, reporting 2477 census children. A gain of 421 over last year. Fresno is good for 10,000 population at least. You never read of so many great cures elsewhere, as those effected by Hood's Saraparilla; did you? It is America's Greatest Medicine and possesses merit unknown to any other preparation. It is a wonderful invigrator. Sick headache cured by Hood's Pills. Scc. A Good Plan. The California Consolidated Petroleum company has issued a folder concisely setting forth its objects, which is the prettiest piece of printing yet seen in connection with the oil industry, and it is well worth reading and passing around. The plans of this company are more extensive than those of the ordinary oil company, in that they insure to the holders of its stock profits in all the fields of the State, as it owns large holdings in all the fields. It owns the only hydraulic rotary drilling rigs ever brought to California, and will lead all others in the development of oil. It will keep twenty drilling rigs in operation in twenty fields between Oakland and San Diego. On the first strike of oil its directors are confident its stock will jump above par value, as it has other sources of revenue to raise values. Fraternal Brotherhood. Anaheim lodge, No. 28, Fraternal Brotherhood, elected the following officers at its meeting on Friday evening, June 22d: W. M. Carver, President; Miss Joyce F. Littlefield, Vice President; F. C. Rimpau, Secretary; Mrs. W. M. Cooper, Treasurer; Mrs. Robert Landreth, Chaplain; W. M. Cooper, Sergeant; E. H. Adams, Master-at-arms; Mrs. J. H. Clabaugh. Inside Doorkeeper; J. H. Clabaugh. It will keep twenty drilling rigs in operation in twenty fields between Oakland and San Diego. On the first strike of oil its directors are confident its stock will jump above par value, as it has other sources of revenue to raise values. One of these is royalties it owns on 5000 acres leased to capitalists for development. Still further, the California Consolidated Petroleum company has in its treasury two million five hundred thousand shares of the stock of fifty of the leading oil companies of the State. This plan gives the stockholders an interest in the earnings of all the different fields. From the view point of the investor this plan affords the surest, safest opportunity for profit it is possible to adopt. It is confidently expected that by July 16 next, all the stock offered at 50c per share will be subscribed for, and the price raised to one dollar per share. As set forth in the advertisement which appears in this issue, the company's stock is absolutely non-assessable, there being no personal liability to the stockholder. This insures a square deal and prevents the "freezing out" of the small stockholder. You will make no mistake in securing while you can some of the stock of the California Consolidated Petroleum company. This company is the most formidable rival the Standard Oil company has ever encountered, and having ample capital its success is assured. It does not require a prophet to foresee that its 50-cent stock will be worth several times that amount. Stock redeemable on demand at any time within thirty days from date of certificate. All money paid in installments refunded on demand at any time within thirty days from date of first payment. If you do not want your stock, send to company, and you will promptly get every cent of your money back. A Sprained Ankle Quickly Cured. When we reflect that only a small proportion of the really good books can be read in a lifetime, it is literally true that in reading a trashy book we are losing forever the time to read a good one. It is auspicious for the future intelligence of the citizens of the United States, and especially of Italy, that these two countries lead all others in the circulation of wholesome literature. It means for Italy a completion of her emancipation which was only partially accomplished when Garibaldi entered Rome and overthrew the temporal power of the Pope. Yesterday I saw on one of the most crowded boulevards of Paris a long procession of boys of from eight to twelve years old marshaled by two men who were in citizens' clothes, and not as in former days the long domino of the priest. I asked one of the leaders if they were public school children? The reply was: "Oui. Monsieur, garcons de l'école nationale." I could not help saying, "Vive l'école publique!" for the future of France is more dependent on the education of the youth of the country than its great army. I shall have more to say about this Palace of Congresses and the questions considered by the eminent specialists who are now here. To my mind this, while the least frappant, is really the most important part of the Exposition. It means more for human amelioration than the latest thing in plows, automobiles or electricity, though I must not be understood as minimizing their usefulness. I learn that there will be no Congress of Religions such as was held in Chicago, but there is on the program "d'Histoire des Religions," to be discussed from the 3rd to the 8th of September inclusive, and this will doubtless bring up the subject in its breadth. There will be no participation by the Roman Catholics. Mr. W. S. Whedon, Cashier of the First National Bank of Winterest, Iowa, in a recent letter gives some experience with a carpenter in his employ, that will be of value to other mechanics. It will be faithfully carried out, not for a few days, but for years, as the California Consolidated Petroleum Company is in the field to stay, and will continue this protective policy. The stock of the California Consolidated Petroleum Company, now 50 cents per share, will soon be advanced to one dollar per share, its par value. This advance will be stable, because the revenues will justify it, and because the company is strong enough to maintain it. It can never be worth less than fifty cents per share under the Company's permanent policy of gold redemption. Any corporation that has faith in itself and in its future, and that intends to advance the price of its stock, can well afford to thus protect its shareholders, for in protecting them it protects itself, for they are the company. The California Consolidated Petroleum Company owns 10,000 acres of the cream of the oil fields between Oakland and San Diego. It owns royalties on 5,000 acres leased to capitalists. The poor man buys the stock of one company and takes his chances of success or failure. California Consolidated Petroleum Company Makes it possible for the poor man to protect himself as does the rich man; for a single share in the California Consolidated Petroleum Company represents an interest in FIFTY companies and an interest in 10,000 acres of oil land, and royalties on 5000 acres. By giving you an interest in FIFTY companies, and in these lands and royalties, we divide your risks, and thus we MULTIPLY your profits. California is richer in oil than it ever was in gold. Its annual oil output will soon exceed in value its annual gold product. Millions of dollars are being made in California oil. People owning a small block of oil stock have suddenly found themselves rich. As an instance of this the stock of the Home Oil Company which sold originally at a nominal figure made its owners over $5000 per share. An investment in this Company is at least safe, and it may mean ease and comfort for life. The small stockholder is absolutely protected. He cannot be assessed or frozen out. The Company's stock is NON-ASSESSABLE and there is no stockholder's liability. Stock is certain to go to $1 in 90 days, and may go to $5 by January. He is lucky who gets the stock at fifty cents per share. Why buy the stock of an oil company having limited resources when you can in one company invest in the entire oil field of California? Why do it? The California Consolidated Petroleum company has men behind it of capital and high reputation.
