LIGHT AND HELP NEEDED.
A burglar who had entered a minister's house at midnight was disturbed by the awakening of the occupant of the room he was in. Drawing a knife, he said:
"If you stir you are a dead man. I'm hunting for money."
"Let me get up and strike a light," said the minister, "and I'll hunt with you."
Remarkable Rescue.
Mrs. Michael Curtain, Plainfield, Ill., makes the statement that she caught cold, which settled on her lungs; she was treated for a month by her family physician, but grew worse. He told her she was a hopeless victim of consumption and that no medicine could cure her. Her druggist suggested Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption: she bought a bottle and to her delight found herself benefited from first dose. She continued its use and after taking six bottles, found herself sound and well; now she does her own housework, and is as well as she ever was. Free trial bottles of this Great Discovery at Paul A. Derge's drug store. Only 50c. and $1, every bottle guaranteed.
A VICTOR.
"I understand he had the best of the debate," said one statesman.
"Yes," said the other. "He made everybody so sleepy that they couldn't talk back."
A Good Cough Medicine.
It speaks well for Chamberlain's Cough Remedy when druggists use it in their own families in preference to any other. "I have sold Chamberlain's Cough Remedy for the past five years with complete satisfaction to myself and customers," says Druggist J. Goldsmith. Van Etten, N.Y., "I have always used it in my own family both for ordinary coughs and colds and for the cough following la gripe, and find it very efficacious." For sale by P. A. Derge, druggist.

the franchise as a traitor to his country, and as an enemy to God and man.
We raise under the national dome the patriotic devotion of our dead, and challenge the world for purer illustration of love of country.
We wish today to rebaptize the nation with the spirit of a new love of country, drawn from the associations that cluster around nearly a million graves.
We would ask today that all true patriots, whether native or foreign born, register a vow that these dead shall not have died in vain, and that the institutions of our country shall not only be perpetual but pure and undefiled.
Today is the day of magnanimity, of charity and forgiveness. Here today over the graves of more than half a million, a great and virtuous people and a victorious army extend the hand of forgiveness, and with thousands of widows and orphans and maimed and wounded they demand no indemnity for the past.
Not another such instance of magnanimity adorns human history. We feel that the past is secure, and we trust that the future will preserve all that the past has gained. They feel that there is indelibly inscribed on the imperishable tablet of memory of the loyal people of the United States the image of the volunteer soldier, that time will strengthen and not efface.
Hail! then and farewell Memorial day of 1900. The past is with us today, the future lies with the eternal and the coming generation.
Patriotism knows no rank, name or lineage. To have died under the American flag gives a passport to the hearts of the American people for all time. And though no loving kindred hand may mark the resting place of some one who fell with an emblem of affection, the whole loyal American people remember and their obligations due him as a friend and brother.
There were many who went forth in the great struggle of '61 who never returned, and whose fate and last resting place is known only to the God of battles. No friendly hand may decorate their graves today, but they are somewhere in the vast universe of God, and we firmly believe that the power is

AUTOMOBILES AS HEARSES.

A Sprained Ankle Quickly Cured.
"At one time I suffered from a severe sprain of the ankle," says Geo. E. Cary, editor of the Guide, Washington, Va. "After using several well recommended medicines without success, I tried Chamberlain's Pain Balm, and am pleased to say that relief came as soon as I began its use and a complete cure speedily followed." THE CAUSE.
First Young Man (as he tastes a deviled egg the first time)—My! but these eggs taste funny.
Second Young Man—Is that so? The old hen must have been a comedienne.
The Latest Yarn.
A Pittsburg drummer tells this new yarn: I always carry a bottle of Kemp's Balsam in my grip. I take cold easily and a few doses of the balsam always makes me a new man. Everywhere I go I speak a good word for Kemp. I take hold of my customers—I take old men and young men, and tell them confidentially what I do when I take cold. At druggists, 25c and 50c.
A STREET CAR COMEDY.
The Girl and Her Purse and Five Smart Young Men.
As soon as the good looking girl entered the car the five young men on the opposite seat began surveying her with critical eye, and she hadn't yet made out whether the baldheaded man with the medical magazine was to be included in the lot when the conductor came in for his fare. The girl opened her portemonnaie and began to take out latchkeys, samples of ribbon and little memoranda in the usual way, and the five young men smiled, each after his own particular style. Bald-headed was out of it. The girl didn't see any of the smiles, but she caught on just the same. There was a nickel all ready for her fingers, but when one pale faced young man added a giggle to his smile the nickel was thrust aside for a $2 bill. She didn't hand it over to the conductor as she fished it out; but, leaning forward with a winning smile on her face, she began at the head of the line and asked:
"Will you please be so kind as to change this bill for me?"
It was impossible. A young man with only a dime in his pocket has no can flag gives a passport to the hearts of the American people for all time.
No friendly hand may decorate their graves today, but they are somewhere in the vast universe of God, and we firmly believe that the power is given them to witness the devotion and affection of a vast and happy people to the heroic dead who made all these things possible.
All that I have said concerning the soldiers of the late Civil War, and concerning the flag of our country, is intended to apply with equal force to all of the boys who so manfully responded to the government's call to defend our flag, and to establish it wherever it was considered by the government the proper thing to do. During the war with Spain (we may differ as to policies and how to do things) there was no difference of opinion when the government said move forward and establish our banner any place on this earth, and there is nowhere that it has been established that I think there ought to be a backward step taken to remove it, any more than it should be removed from Georgia or Alabama when it took its place there by force of arms in 1865.
The Spanish war has shown how friendly and securely we are united now as a nation. The boys from the North and the South, sons of the men who wore the blue and the gray, touched elbows during this war as their fathers would have wished them do, and no one could detect the "Yank" from the "Johnnie."
What possibilities may we not predict for this country in the future? Is there any great or good thing that we may not expect?
As our minds wander into the future we are deeply impressed at the sacrifices which we this day commemorate, and their perfect reward will be seen when the nations of the earth are marching in one harmonious column along the paths of truth, justice and humanity, the United States of America and the Stars and Stripes leading in the van.

and the five young men smiled, each after his own particular style. Bald-headed was out of it. The girl didn't see any of the smiles, but she caught on just the same. She didn't hand it over to the conductor as she fished it out; but, leaning forward with a winning smile on her face, she began at the head of the line and asked:
"Will you please be so kind as to change this bill for me?"
It was impossible. A young man with only a dime in his pocket has no show to bust a bill. The next one had a quarter, but he had to decline, and so it went to No. 5. His hand sought his pocket as his turn came, but it didn't bring up any change. The smiles had been replaced by sheepish looks, and they rubbed elbows and trod on each other's feet in trying to look out of the windows. There was a long minute of painful suspense, and then the good looking girl handed the bill to the conductor. She hadn't a word to say to the five young men who had started out in life so gayly, but old baldheaded bad. When all was over, he turned half around and growled out:
"If I were you follows, I wouldn't try to be so blamed smart next time."—Philadelphia Press.

Why buy the stock of an oil company having limited resources when you can in one company invest in the entire oil field of California? Why do it?
The California Consolidated Petroleum company has men behind it of capital and high reputation. There are few people on the Pacific coast who do not know some of the directors at least by reputation. Their names are not only a guarantee of the honest handling of the money but of the success of the company.
This company is not a trust. It is not connected directly or indirectly with the Standard Oil company, all rumors to the contrary notwithstanding.
