We have a note from J. H. Kayander of Chalchilhuites, State of Zacatecas, Mexico, correcting an error that crept into our reference some weeks ago to John Schauman's trip through portions of Mexico. Mr. Kayander writes that Maximilian was shot, not, as stated by us at the time, at the castle of Chapultepec, President Diaz's present country residence, but, along with his two Generals, Meramon and Mejia, as will be readily recalled, near the city of Queretaro. The execution was by order of General Escobedo, the commanding General of the district at that time, and took place, Mr. Kayander says, within two miles of the city of Queretaro, which, he adds, is distant 153 miles north of the City of Mexico. The correction is cheerfully made, and we tip our sombrero to our caballero friend. In the early years of this Republic our plentiful and prosperous shipping gave us rank with the greatest nations, as well as wealth, power and prestige. The intrepid American seaman, as well as the ships of unequalled grace and swiftness that he sailed over the broad oceans, were the admiration and the envy of all mankind. Americans who have lived their allotted three score years and ten remember with a glow and a thrill the prestige of the American sailor and the American ship in the fifties. But since those days the American clippers have faded from the seas, history and legend alone recording the brilliant and enduring achievements of our countrymen in the merchant shipping service. There has departed with our shipping one of the greatest money-making industries with which the country ever was blessed, and our national neglect has built great and powerful fleets of foreign ships that annually earn hundreds of millions of dollars increased during the administration of President Cleveland, when the miners were only working from 184 to 190 days in the year. But there were more men at work and they were working more days, 242 days in 1898, under the administration of President McKinley. Then the output of the Wyoming coal mines increased to 4,547,733 tons last year. The oil fever seems to have struck Orange county, and is sweeping on to San Diego, where already several companies have been organized to engage in boring operations. Orange county is producing a large quantity of crude oil, and we believe the industry is as yet in its undeveloped infancy. Much valuable oil territory remains yet to be exploited, and doubtless many of the companies now having stock upon the market will enhance very largely in value. REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS. But since those days the American clippers have faded from the seas, history and legend alone recording the brilliant and enduring achievements of our countrymen in the merchant shipping service. There has departed with our shipping one of the greatest money-making industries with which the country ever was blessed, and our national neglect has built great and powerful fleets of foreign ships that annually earn hundreds of millions of dollars at the expense of the American people. More than that, these powerful merchant ships and their experienced men increase the naval strength of their governments, at the same time perpetuating the dangerous weakness of the United States upon the sea. A bill to remedy all this, a bill to revive the glory, the grandeur and the greatness of the United States in all the great ports of the world, a bill to turn our foreign carrying over to American ships, now hangs upon each of the Congressional calendars, favorably reported, but unacted upon. Here is the time—here is the opportunity—for an eloquent tongue, an influential orator and a pre-eminent statesman to induce Congress before adjournment to do its manifest duty by American shipping. The hour has struck—where is the man? STATE MINERALOGIST A. S. COOPER has made a report of the yield and value of the mineral substances of California for the year 1899. These are the principal items in value outside of the gold and silver, the statistics concerning which have already been published. The total mineral product is greater by $2.024,361 than in the preceding year. The total product of metallic substances for the year is $21,305,023, an increase of $1,281,989. The total product of metallic substances for the year is $21,305,023, an increase of $1,281,989. This includes gold, silver, mineral paint, quicksilver, antimony, copper, lead, manganese and platinum. The total value of non-metallic substances is $2,466,070. This includes borax, coal, mineral waters, salt, asbestos, gypsum, magnesite, pyrites, lithiumica and fuller's earth. The relative value of the principal mineral products of the State are as follows: First, gold; second, copper; third, petroleum; fourth, quicksilver; fifth, borax. There are 24,991 men employed in the various mining industries, excepting the petroleum industry, for which no accurate figures could be secured owing to the rapid increase in the number of oil wells. Shasta is given the highest rank, with Nevada county second and San Bernardino county third. Wyoming is not generally regarded as being much of a coal producer, yet there were only ten States in which more coal was mined last year. The output of Wyoming coal has been as follows during the last decade: | Year | Tons. | Value | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | 1890 | 1,870,366 | $3,183,669 | | 1891 | 2,227,841 | 3,558,273 | | 1892 | 2,560,629 | 3,168,776 | | 1893 | 2,490,811 | 3,290,904 | | 1894 | 2,417,453 | 3,170,292 | | 1895 | 2,246,911 | 2,977,901 | | 1896 | *2,233,184* | 2,918,225 | | 1897 | 2,579,886 | 3,138,694 | | 1898 | 2,863,812 | 3,664,190 | | 1899 | 4,547,733 | 4,690,163 | *Including Nebraska.* Moderate as is Wyoming's production of coal, it is ample to serve as an object lesson to the 3,500 miners in that State. They can see that there was an increasing demand for Wyoming coal in the years 1890-92 under the administration of President Harrison, with a consequent better employment of labor. They can also see that the output of coal from Wyoming's mines depends on its location and the availability of water resources. The ancients believed that rheumatism was the work of a demon within a man. Any one who has had an attack of sciatic or inflammatory rheumatism will agree that the infliction is demoniac enough to warrant the belief. It has never been claimed that Chamberlain's Pain Balm would cast out demons, but it will cure rheumatism, and hundreds bear testimony to the truth of this statement. One application relieves the pain, and this quick relief which it affords is alone worth many times its cost. For sale by P. A. Dereg. L. Harris has gone to Tehachapi, where he will have charge for some weeks of his firm's store at that point. His place here is being filled by his brother-in-law, Mr. Asher, who thinks of making Anaheim his permanent home. The firm of Harris & Falkenstein, of which Mr. Asher is a member, is preparing to put in a stock of hardware and tinware. They report a continuance of brisk business, and are reaching out constantly for new trade. I consider it not only a pleasure but a duty I owe to my neighbors to tell about the wonderful cure effected in my case by the timely use of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea remedy. I was taken very badly with flux and procured a bottle of this remedy. A few doses of it effected a permanent cure. I take pleasure in recommending it to others suffering from that dreadful disease.-J. W. Lynch, Dorr, W. Va. This remedy is sold by P. A. Dereg. The heavy rain of the previous week was followed by warmer days and by light showers on the 11th. In some sections the raining past two weeks amounted to two inches, and probably averaged one inch throughout the district with the remarkably heavy snow on the mountains, will insure abode of water for irrigation during a son. Cut hay was damaged to sentent. Late sown wheat was beaten and it is now probable that a snail will be harvested. Orchards vegetation have been greatly frightened by the recent rains. The proximal good crop of beets and beans has much improved. Bean plants commenced. The prune and peel are nearly a failure in the vicinity of Pomona. Walnuts are developed but look well.
