THE San Francisco Call of the 21st inst. prints the following in reference to the extra session of the Legislature, which it is believed will be called early next month:
Before the Legislature is convened in extra session Senators and Assemblymen will have ample time to ascertain the sentiments of their respective constituencies on the subject of the United States Senatorship. The Call is advised that nine-tenths of the Republicans of California are opposed to the election of D. M. Burns to fill the vacancy in the United States Senate. Members of the Legislature, however, can get for themselves an expression of opinion from the people whose interests they were elected to represent.
The political agents of the Southern Pacific company contend that the opposition to Burns' election is confined to the newspapers. Herrin reported to Huntington last winter that Burns would be elected, and that the only opposition to his election emanated from the press. Later on Huntington learned that Herrin was a false prophet, who derived his inspiration from Judge Dibble.
It is noted now that the railroad agents are beginning the extra-session campaign along the lines on which they were defeated at the regular session. They are claiming for Burns men who stood manfully for the people in the long contest last winter. Fifteen members of the Legislature who were not in the Burns corral last session are claimed recruits for the railroad's candidate. The names of the fifteen are not directly given, but the political agents of the corporation assert that fifteen of the following twenty-one members have agreed to vote for Burns in caucus:
Senators—A. T. Carrier, W. M. Cutter, T. J. Jones, A. E. Nutt and D. H. Trout.
Assemblymen — Alden Anderson, J. W. Atherton, C. H. Boynton, H. W. Chynoweth, W. A. Clark, W. F. Cowan, A. S. Grower, C. B. Greenwell, O. H. Huber, W. B. Lardner, A. M. McDonald, W. S. Melick, J. M. Miller, G. G. Radcliff, W. S. Robinson and L. H. Valentine.
When the railroad agents are asked to give a straight list of the fifteen new convicts to the cause of Burns they decline to name more than four. Chynoweth, Clark, Greenwell and Miller are claimed as sure recruits.
Efforts to ascertain the names of the uncertain eleven meet with no response.
From the yellow building the confidential information is imparted to political workers in Los Angeles, San Diego, Shasta and Humboldt counties that Burns has gained fifteen supporters since the Legislature adjourned, and that the original thirty together with these fifteen, will swing the caucus into line for the railroad's candidate.
The same old tactics of bluing and claiming which were resorted to last winter in order to cheer up the desponding thirty are again brought into play.
It will be recollected that Burns' open consent to become a candidate for Senator was not announced until within a few days of the time for the Legislature to assemble.
It was openly proclaimed that he was the choice of the Southern Pacific, but he withheld the personal declaration of his members could not be in making As a matter of fact, our City Clerk receives favorable mention from each Grand Jury for the excellence of his labor. The city of Anaheim is commended upon the "fine showing made by the municipal electric-light plant, it being fully self-supporting, as shown by the records of said city."
Here is a recommendation, however, which will probably give rise to some discussion:
We would most earnestly recommend that the cities of Anaheim and Orange come under the same rule as the city of Santa Ana, as to the levying of taxes and collecting of same by the County Assessor and Tax Collector.
We found by examination that the collected and turned to her Treasurer for the sum of $100 per year. We found that city of Anaheim pays to get her taxes collected between $600 and $700; and we would most urgently call the attention of the Anaheim citizens to these figures, believing that they can save at least $600 each year to the taxpayers of Anaheim by so doing.
As a general rule, citizens of Anaheim will object to going to Santa Ana to pay their city taxes, and the saving which the Grand Jury has discovered is apparent, not real; for if we take away the perquisites of the offices City Clerk and Marshal, we shall certainly have to pay them higher salaries than they at present receive. The City Trustees have had this matter under consideration before, and have come to the conclusion that little if any saving can be effected by putting the theory into practice. Thus, the City Clerk receives a salary of not to exceed $30 per month, which includes $125 once a year for making the assessment roll.
If this latter stipend be taken away from him, the City Trustees have hitherto held that he would have to be recompensed, at least in part, therefor. That city has succeeded in filling the Clerk's office at such insignificant salary is cause for congratulation on the part of the taxpayers; but the rate is so low, and the work of the office increasing to such an extent, that probably in the near future an increase of salary may be one of the matters of municipal policy confronting the people. Certainly the salary, under any view of the circumstances, is ridiculously low. Much the same argument may be made in the case of the City Marshal. The subject was gone into fully two years ago, when correspondence with numerous cities in the State demonstrated that fact that the salaries paid by city officers here were in many cases far below those paid elsewhere.
At that time the matter of placing the law and collection of city taxes in the GAGE ON AN EXTRA SESSION
His Resolve to Continue to Economic Administer Public Affairs Leads to Serious Consideration of the Matter of the Expense of it.
Gov. Gage has written a letter implying to a petition submitted to himthe business men of San Francisco calling him to call a special session of Legislature for the purpose of enacting such legislation as will enable the Board of Harbor Commissioners to construct wharves, pliers, bulkheads and breakwaters as the increased shipyards of the city makes necessary. The motion read as follows:
SAN FRANCISCO, December 24,
Hon. Henry T. Gage, Governor of California—Sir: We, we undersigned, proclaim owners and business men in the city of Francisco most respectfully petitioned extraordinary session of Legislaturethe State for the purpose of enacting legislation as is necessary to enable Harbor Commissioners immediately construct and to extend such wharves, bulkheads and breakwaters their judgment are demanded by changed conditions and rapidly increasing necessities of the commercial and banking requirements of the port on Francisco.
We thus petition, as under this condition no new wharves can be constructed over 600 feet in length, while such wharves should be of considerable length to conform to the measures of modern vessels, which are in instances over 600 feet long, at least owing over 770 feet in length.
There are many applications for wage now on file with the State Board of Harbor Commissioners which cannot sign owing to the lack of wharves yard room available for the belt rails much less than the requirements, less space only at the present date prevailing transaction a much greater volume business.Additional space is also required by the new line of railroad just enclosed by San Francisco. The additional yard required would be secured from this space on the solid pier contemplatedbreakwater.

give a straight list of the fifteen new terms to the cause of Burns they decline to name more than four. Chypworth, Clark, Greenwell and Miller are claimed as sure recruits. Efforts to ascertain the names of the uncertain eleven meet with no response. From the yellow building the confidential information is imparted to political workers in Los Angeles, San Diego, Shasta and Humboldt counties that Burns has retained fifteen supporters since the Legislature adjourned that the original thirty together with these fifteen, will swing the claims into line for the railroad's candidate. The same old tactics of bluffing and claiming which were resorted to last winter in order to cheer up the desponding thirty are again brought into play.
It will be collected that Burns' open conference become a candidate for Senator was not announced within a few days of the time for the Legislature to assemble. It was openly proclaimed that he was the choice of the Southern Democratic candidate so that members could not be instructed to leave their homes to vote himself. He conducted a dark-lantern campaign with the hope of corraling the Legislature before the people were apprised of the danger.
Conditions have changed since the regular-session campaign opened. Burns is now an avowed candidate. Grant, Barnes and Bullard longer in the field. The Call understands that Thomas R. Bard, Irving M. Scott and John A. Barham are candidates. The extra session may not be called for Republican voters to come together in the various Assembly districts and announce their candidate nominees. No doubt railroads are working in the dark to secure signatures of indorsement here and there for Burns; hence it is time for decent Republicans to be on the alert.
Burns cannot put forward the claim at the extra session that he is the candidate of the Republican party. The Republican State Central Committee will not again establish headquarters at Sacramento to assist the Colonel. Dibble will not be privileged to refer to Burns as the candidate of the "organization."
McLaughlin since his dethronement from power has had a severe attack of cold feet, and will remain at the horn of the railroad in the corridors of the capitol.
Burns will simply be the railroad's candidate, and Barham, Scott, Bard or some other reputable public man will be the candidate of the Republican party. It is time now for Republicans throughout the State to instruct their representatives in the Legislature.
Much of this article is written in the peculiar style of the Call when referring to D. M. Burns.
Mr. Chynoweth was in town on Saturday, and on being shown the Call observed that he had said no to one he would vote for D. M. Burns for the Senatorship. However, he added that he would go into a Republican caucus as a supporter of U. S. Grant, and if Burns secured the caucus nomination he would support him for the office.
Mr. Chynoweth says he gives little need to the unfavorable newspaper reports printed relative to Col. Burns, and added that if Burns were elected United States Senator he would doubtless make an able and energetic official. Ever alert to the protection of the interests of the State. He believes that California needs another Senator at Washington at this time, when the reciprocity treaty with Jamaica threatens the citrus industry of this State. A case in point demonstrates the correctness of this view. Recently we have seen in papers supposed to be tolerably well informed on public affairs the statement that in return for the enactment of the Jamaica treaty a $15,000,000 market for oranges will be opened up to our growers in the Dominion of Canada. Inasmuch as the orange output of this State will probably not exceed a third of this figure, this statement would seem to indicate that another Senator at Washington would be about the right man in the right place. Danger has existed that the Jamaica treaty would be approved by Congress, although later reports from Washington are of a more increasing to such an extent, that probably in the near future an increase of salary may be one of the matters of municipal policy confronting the people. Certainly the salary, under any view of the circumstances, is ridiculous low. Much the same argument may be made in the case of the City Marshal. The subject was gone into fully two years ago, when correspondence with numerous cities in the State demonstrated the fact that the salaries paid the city officers here were in many cases far below those paid elsewhere.
At that time the matter of placing the levy and collection of city taxes in the hands of the county officials was dropped, as offering little if any prospect of economy. Moreover, the practice of sending people to the county seat to pay their city taxes would add to the business of the latter, while taking it away from our home locality. Purchases would in all probability be made that should be reserved for the home merchants, and in the opinion of many the practice is not one to be followed by a community endeavoring to erect itself into the importance of a local distributing center.
The 15 per cent commission charged by the City Clerk for collecting personal property taxes would, if the work were performed by the County Assessor, be collected by that official and turned into the county treasury. So there would be no saving to the tax-payers of this city on that score, but on the other hand the money would go each year to swell the funds in the treasury of the county.
The new year is a good time to pay up delinquent subscriptions. The GAZETTE wishes a Happy New Year to all its readers, and will appreciate the settlement of all arrearages on the part of its subscribers.
Christmas festivities began on Saturday afternoon by a Sunday school festival at the M. E. Church, at which a very beautiful Christmas tree was laden with gifts for the scholars.
Sunday evening there was a Sunday school concert at the Congregational Church, and on Monday evening there were some exercises and a tree filled with Christmas gifts for the Sunday school scholars.
There were numerous family gatherings, and at the Park House a most elaborate menu was served to the guests. Several entertained their friends there. The Park House is well filled and is a place for good meals. The Sunday dinners are a great attraction. The dining-room was most beautiful decorated with holly.
The improved times gave Santa Claus a better chance to make people happy than for two years past.
A carload of barley received by Whitaker was sold from the track before putting in the warehouse. They are 80 low, and the work of their colleagues increases to such an extent, that probably in near future an increase of salary may be one of the matters of municipal policy confronting the people. Certainly the salary, under any view of the circumstances, is ridiculous low. Much the same argument may be made in the case of City Marshal. The subject was gone into fully two years ago, when correspondence with numerous cities in the State demonstrated the fact that the salaries paid the city officers here were in many cases far below those paid elsewhere.

Inasmuch as the orange output of this State will probably not exceed a third of this figure, this statement would seem to indicate that another Senator at Washington would be about the right man in the right place. Danger has existed that the Jamaica treaty would be approved by Congress, although later reports from Washington are of a more reassuring nature.
Of the names given in the Call, Senators Currier, Cutter, Jones, Nutt and Trout, and Assemblymen Chynoweth, Clark, Crowder, Greenwell, Huber, McDonald, Radcliff and Robinson (13 in all) were Grant men. Miller of Long Beach voted for Bulla, but on the last day of the session voted for Burns. Miller of San Francisco was a supporter of Burns from the outset. Burns had 30 votes in caucus. With these 13 voting for him (provided he secures the caucus nomination) he will have a majority, and will be elected United States Senator.
As to the merits of Col. Burns and U. S. Grant for the Senatorship, we say, as we said last winter, that we infinitely prefer Burns; and we say without fear of successful contradiction that outside of a few supporters of Grant at Santa Ana, there are not one dozen Grant men in this county. We believe, as Mr. Chynoweth does, that if Col. Burns is elected United States Senator, he will guard the interests of the people of this State with a jealous eye, and be a powerful worker for California in the upper house of Congress.
The report of the Grand Jury, which will be found printed in full on the first page, makes entertaining reading, even if not spiced with an indictment or two. For the most part the report speaks in terms of commendation relative to matters of public moment, and the Grand Jury has evidently found much to command, while there seems to be little to criticise. The books kept by Judge Shanley are, along with those of other Township Justices, especially commended, and City Clerk Nebelung is given a word of praise, along with the City Clerk of Santa Ana, for his accurate work and system of bookkeeping with Christmas gifts for the Sunday school scholars.
There were numerous family gatherings, and at the Park House a most elaborate menu was served to the guests. Several entertained their friends there. The Park House is well filled and is the place for good meals. The Sunday dinners are a great attraction. The dining-room was most beautifully decorated with holly.

One of the most enjoyable occasions in the history of the Pacific Creamery was tendered to the employees of the factory last evening, when a special car went to Los Angeles with about one hundred on board and in a body attended the Burbank Theatre. They were given a fine oyster supper, a trolley ride, and returned to the Park on the midnight train. At the supper Mr. Stewart of Los Angeles made an eloquent address and also presented an elegant gold watch to Mr. Charles Bixby on behalf of the employees. Mr. Bixby was quite overpowered, but thanked them courteously, and said he could not make a speech, but would see them individually. They gave him three rousing cheers.
George Whitaker and his brother Frank were at the homestead Monday.

ON AN EXTRA SESSION
Solve to Continue to Economically Minister Public Affairs Leads to Various Consideration of the Matter of the Expense of it.
Gage has written a letter in rea petition submitted to him by business men of San Francisco urging to call a special session of the nature for the purpose of enacting legislation as will enable the State of Harbor Commissioners to con-wharves, piers, bulkheads and waters as the increased shipping city makes necessary. The peti-ead as follows:
SAN FRANCISCO, December, 1899.
Henry T. Gage, Governor of Californi- We, the undersigned, property and business men in the city of San Francisco, most respectfully petition that early date you convene a special and ordinary session of the Legislature of state for the purpose of enacting such intention is necessary to enable the Harbor Commissioners immediately instruct and to extend such wharves, bulkheads and breakwaters as in judgment are demanded by the agreed conditions and the rapidly increase-cesses of the commercial and ship requirements of the port of San Francisco.
Thus petition, as under the present讼ions no new wharves can be construed over 600 feet in length, whereas wharves should be of considerably longer length to conform to the measure-ness of modern vessels, which are in many cases over 600 feet long, at least one be-ver 770 feet in length.
There are many applications for wharf on file with the State Board of Har-Commissioners which cannot be assigned to the lack of wharves. The room available for the belt railroad is less than the requirements, lack of only at the present date prevent transaction of a much greater volume of water. Additional space is also required for the new line of railroad just entering Francisco. The additional yard room hired would be secured from the yard on the solid pier contemplated as a skewater.
Wharves, etc., cannot be built of the ter length at the present time, and modified at an extra session of the statute, nothing can be done in this rea for at least one year, at the next regu-lession of the Legislature. In the mean-ning the port of San Francisco will surely have a large amount of shipping from its tity to accommodate it, and from the latter facilities offered by other ports near it. Very respectfully submitted.
The petition is signed by the major-fof the leading business firms of San Francisco. To this appeal the Gov-ort sent the following answer:

UNCLE JAKE'S BROTHER.
Elected Sheriff Back in Leavenworth, and Gets an Old-fashioned Serenade.
Uncle Jake Everhardy returned some days ago from Arizona and found on his return a copy of the Leavenworth Standard,of date November 10,giving the following interesting account of an ovation tendered his brother,Peter Everhardy, the was elected sheriff of the county, carrying every precinct was 822:
The county jail was raided last night by over one hundred men who with the connivance of the guard were admitted to the jail yard about 10 o'clock, and the racket that followed had everybody about the prison on the ragged edge of excitement for a time.
Sheriff Everhardy and family occupy the residence portion of the building, and all had retired for the night.A might tumult from the crowd caused Mrs.Everhardy to awake the Sheriff and tell him to get up quickly. She remembered that Walter Mitchell,a negro convict who had murdered a fellow convict at the State penitentiary, had only recently been placed in the jail, and her first thought was that the crowd was after him.The Sheriff ran out bare-headed and in his shirt sleeves,Calling out:“What does all this mean?Who are you? What do you want here?”When he found his office brilliantly lighted and the rooms filled with his friends, and on looking out saw the yard swarming with men and caught the enlivening strains of“A Hot Time”which the Mascot band struck up,他 scratched his head in a puzzled way,and turning to Deputy Sheriff Kennedy, said:“What is it?What is all this about?”
He was hustled out into the yard, the place being aglow with torchlights, and there found himself surrounded by friends from all parts of town who greeted his appearance with a rousing cheer, followed by three more and a tiger. The then was a general hand-shaking.
PRESENTED WITH A CANE.
When quiet was restored Mayor S.F.Neely,addressing the Sheriff as“Uncle Pete,”said the assemblblage had not called there for the purpose of discussing political or partisan issues, but had to rejoice with him upon his re-election to the honorab e position he had so successfully filled for the past two years;to rejoice in the name of the good Democracy with him over the agreeable results of the recent campaign;to congratulate him for the manner in which he had conducted the office Sheriff,as it had been a time-honored rule that if the office had been fully managed, the people re-

The petition is signed by the major of the leading business firms of San Francisco. To this appeal the Governor sent the following answer:
STATE CAPITOL, Dec. 21, 1899.
Henry P. Sonntag, President, and Edgar Minter, Secretary of North Central Improvement Association, and Gentlemen of the Committee on Harbor Improvements: Your letter at hand, together with your petition requesting that at an early date I convene a final and extraordinary session to examine the nature of the State for purpose of setting up the State Harbor Commissioners' immediate construct and to extend such surveys, pliers, bulkheads and breakwaters in their judgment are demanded by the aged conditions and the rapidly increasing necessities of the commercial ship requirements of this character made over the quantities of such a splendid body of men, distinguished among other things, their wonderful business sagacity, as far as their great wealth, influence, authority and honor, certainly indicates the importance of the question of consideration and its gravity I will give the subject further and careful attention at my earliest opportunity.
While I am well aware of the necessity for amendment in our laws to increase the powers of the State Board of Commerce, in order that it may be enabled to impose demands of the shipping interests acting the great and flourishing city of Francisco, as well as the entire State. I likewise deeply impressed with the idea that an extra session would unavoidably encomanderable unusual expense upon the order to properly determine whether interests of the people of the State should be best subserved by a call for an exposition for this purpose. I will be obliged consider arguments against such a course as well as those advancements which are necessary in order to make those furnished by the State Board of Harbor Commissioners under the policy of State economy we may maintain, perhaps it is not here inappropriate to observe that in the mere matters of vetoes alone, I have thus far saved the people of the State.

Here's a Story For You.
Walter Korn of San Jacinto, a nephew of F. A. Korn of this city, arrived in town from San Jacinto on Monday evening. He had been in the railroad wreck at Pomona the evening before, and had also had an exciting experience in the earthquake at San Jacinto, from both of which he escaped unhurt. He was returning to his home from Los Angeles and was seated in the smoking car, when he decided to walk to the rear of the train. He had no sooner reached the rear car, when the mashup occurred. After a change of cars he continued on his way to San Jacinto, where he arrived later in the evening. While asleep he felt the earthquake, and jumping out of bed rapidly down stairs. When on the stairway the front wall fell out into the street. Had it fallen in, he would have been killed. The building immediately collapsed, but Korn escaped uninjured. A number of years ago while at work in a mine, a bucket loaded with pickaxes and shovels fell 150 feet into the shaft, narrowly missing him. Yesterday morning he returned to San Jacinto.
New Year's Eve Services
There will be special services at the German M. E. Church next Sunday evening, New Year's Eve. A Narrow Escape.
Thankful words written by Mrs. Ada E. Hart, of Groton, S. D. "Was taken with a bad cold which settled on my lungs; cough set in and finally terminated in consumption. Four doctors gave me up, saying I could live but a short time. I gave myself up to my Savior, determined if I could not stay with my friends on earth, I would meet my absent ones above. My husband was advised to get Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, Coughs and Colds. I gave it a trial, took in all eight bottles. It has cured me, and thank God, I am saved and now a well and healthy woman." Trial bottles free at Paul A. Derge's drug store. Regular size 50c. and $1. Guaranteed or price refunded.
LOS ALAMITOS.
Last Thursday evening Charlie Gilbert gave his initiation lesson in dancing in the town hall. Quite a number participated.
Fred Edwards and Miss Effie Badgeley were married last week at the home of the bride's parents. Rev. Brown officiated. The happy couple spent a few days visiting in Los Angeles, and are now housekeeping in the cottage next door to the hardware store.
The railroad accident at Pomona numbers among its victims one of our citizens, Peter Terride, who suffered serious injuries in the wreck.
Christmas passed off nicely with dinners and kindly feeling in general. Children were remembered by the usual presents from the gathering at the church. Although there was no tree Christmas night, Mr. Gilbert gave a nice dance at the hall. It was an invitation party, and all who attended had a very enjoyable time.
The veranda around the Hotel Harmona will be treated to a new coat of paint.
Mrs. Frank Parton expects Mr. Parton home from Colorado the last of the week.

HATS OFF TO THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER.
Following the spread there was more music from the band and a cake walk. When ready to leave the band struck up "The Star Spangled Banner," every head being uncovered, and as the last strains of the music floated away three cheers were given for "Old Glory."
The surprise for the Sheriff was organized in a few hours notice and was an impromptu affair throughout. The party formed at Robert Beller's, on North Fifth street, and headed by the Mascot Band marched in two to Shawnee street and thence to Fourth, and in passing the defeated Times "A Hot Time" was played with a will, while the marchers loudly cheered the winning ticket. Mayor Neely marched in the front of the line. County Clerk J.W Niehaus was marshal of the procession, with W.A.Douglas as assistant. It was altogether a real hot time.

A Billiard-Cue Tip Which Will Revolutionize the Matter of Tips on Billiard Cues.
Harry Bundy's patent for a billiard-cue tip bids fair to land him a fortune. He has received calls for it from several billiard rooms in Southern California, and puts in all of his spare time in the manufacture of sample tips. The letters patent granting him and his partner, Frank Young of Santa Ana, a patent upon the device, convey the following points of information concerning it:
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved billiard-cue tip which is simple and durable in construction, easily repaired, and readily placed in position on the cue without the use of an adhesive substance.
The invention also consists principally of a bolt carrying the tip and fitted into a head for the base of the tip to rest on, the said head being provided with a threaded shank for screwing into a ferrule on the cue.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A technical description of the cue tip follows, accompanied by illustrations of the different parts. The paper continues:
1. A billiard-cue tip, comprising a ferrule secured to the upper end of the billiard-cue stick a head having a threaded shank screwing in the said ferrule, a bolt held centrally in the said head and formed with a bolt-head made flat and having prongs, and a tip-base for receiving the tip proper and carried by the said bolt, the head of which engages, with its prongs, the material of the base, substantially as shown and described.
2. A billiard-cue tip, comprising an internally-threaded ferrule adapted to be secured to a cue, a head having a threaded shank screwing into the ferrule and provided with a central longitudinal aperture, a tip, a bolt having its head secured in the tip and its shank projecting through the shank of the head, and a nut on the bolt, substantially as described.
3. A billiard-cue, comprising an internally-threaded ferrule adapted to be secured to a cue, a head having a threaded shank screwing into the ferrule and provided with a longitudinal aperture, a tip, a bolt having its head secured in the tip and its shank projecting through the shank of the head, and a conical nut on said bolt, substantially as described.
4. A billiard-cue tip, consisting of an internally-threaded ferrule adapted to be secured to a cue, a head provided with projections or spurs and having a threaded shank screwing into the ferrule, the head and shank being provided with a longitudinally-extending aperture, a tip-base resting upon the head, a bolt having its head formed with spurs and resting upon the tip-base, the shank of the bolt projecting through the shank of the head, and a nut on the said bolt, substantially as described.

A Clever Little Dog.
A curious illustration of canine intelligence—and its limitations—was observed by a writer in The Outlook a few days ago. Passing down a street he saw a fine Airedale terrier lying down and with both forepaws and muzzled nose scrubbing the surface of an iron grating with a bone, as if to bring it to a high state of polish. The owner saw and explained. The grating is just over a cellar in which the terrier sleeps. His muzzle prevents him from attacking bones to advantage by day, so he brings the bones of his finding to the grating, hoping to push them through and gnaw luxuriously when unmuzzled at night. But the little chap had but the vague ideas of the size limits of the grating, and, as the ordinary sizes of bones go, he must have had at least two failures to every success. Yet, with real terrier ingenuity, he turned even his failure to account, for after vigorously trying every hole in the grating he would quietly stop, lick the entire grating clean of the grease and meat juice rubbed off the bone, then rub off another layer and repeat the licking.

Billard players say the new tip will revolutionize the matter of cue tips in billiard rooms. The old style tip (the one at present in general use) is glued on to the end of the cue, is very short lived, and often unsatisfactory. It creates a great item of expense, which the new tip is designed to overcome.
Back From Europe.
Win. Crowther and his two daughters, Misses Sadie and Ruby Crowther, returned on Sunday from their trip to the British Isles and Europe, after an absence since April. They visited the scenes of Mr. Crowther's childhood in England and traveled extensively over Britain and France, if which latter country Mr. Crowther made an inspection of the walnut industry in the famous walnut-growing section of Grenoble. Here he found the crop to be about 60 per cent of the normal output, and many of the nuts unfit to market. He pronounces the French method of cultivation to be primitive, only a little hoeing being done and light plowing with the implement drawn by a cow. As a consequence the orchards do not compare with those of Southern California, nor does the quality of the nuts produced, notwithstanding the fact that the Grenoble nut has achieved a reputation for uniformity of excellence the world over. In July last he wrote the Walnut Exchange headquarters at Rivera that the price of the French walnuts had been placed, owing to the shortage of the crop, at 81 cents. Add 3 cents for the import duty, said he, and half a cent for freight, and you have 12 cents, the least French walnuts could be laid down in New York for. He advised the growers to stand for a good price, and the fact that the local association sold for as high as 104 cents tends to confirm the correctness of his view of the case. He visited Paris, where he reports having had a most pleasant sojourn. He returns in good health and spirits, and is glad to get back home.
