HOW TO GET RID OF ANTS.
Observations by Prof. A. J. Cook of Claremont.
These little insects have been famous in prose and poetry all down the ages. It is not strange that the beekeeper should wish to know more of the ants. Next to bees—and perhaps we do not need to make this exception—the ant certainly stands at the head of the insect world, as does man at the head of the vertebrate branch.
Again, ants are quite like bees in the economy of their society. The beekeeper is also interested in the fact that the ant is quick to discover honey dew and such insects as secrete it. The ant also becomes sometimes the enemy of the beekeeper in that it enters the hive and causes no little disturbance. It is even reported that the ants sometimes destroy the queen bee, though I have never had satisfactory proof that such is positively true. While it may happen, I doubt if it is ever a common enough occurrence to cause alarm or even disturbance.
The ants, like the bees, many of the wasps and the white ants (which belong to a different order of insects) are truly social. They live in large colonies and work together—each for the good of all. They live for the most part in the ground, though some of the boring ants live in the holes which they bore in trees. Sometimes they fairly tunnel the trees, cutting them so extensively that they are honeycombed. I have never seen trees bored by any insects more thoroughly than by ants. Even the white ants of tropical regions do not do their work more perfectly than do some of the true ants which we are now considering. In every formicary (which name is used to designate a colony) there may be found not only the queen, male and worker, but also soldier ants, which are the protectors of the colony.
The ant belongs to the family formicidae, hence we understand why a colony is called a formicary. In the winter only worker ants, queens and soldiers are found in the nest. As with bees, when spring comes drones and young queens are reared. These, unlike the workers and soldiers, have wings, and in spring or early summer fly forth, often in great numbers, to mate. The drones or males die at once after mating, as do the drone bees, but the queen is taken possession of by the workers, ready to emigrate from the old home and form a new one, and is conducted into some subterranean retreat, and thus a new colony is formed. The first thing the workers do is to bite the queen ant's wings off, so she must perforce stay at home. We see then

hives are set high from the ground to prevent this intrusion of the ants. I have had reports from the Southern States that the ants occasionally destroy the queen bee, which, as suggested above, may occasionally be true, but I think there may be some doubt about it.
Ants are often a serious annoyance on our lawns, and also by getting into the house, where, from their small size, they are able to seek out almost every article of food. It is not difficult to prevent such intrusion. In case of disturbance on our lawns, if we search out the anthills we may easily destroy the ants by the use of bisulphide of carbon. By the use of a crowbar or other rod (wood or iron) we make a hole into the anthill, reaching to the bottom, which the softer ground enables us easily to find or determine. We now pour in a teacup or so of bisulphide of carbon, cover quickly with clay, and compact this so as to prevent the poison from passing off. The liquid quickly vaporizes, and, being held in the nest, destroys all the ants that are in the tunnels. This should be done when the most of the ants are in the nest.
I have found the best substance to repel ants from the house to be corrosive sublimate and buhach, or insect powder. The corrosive sublimate may be brushed along the floor where the ants enter, or strings may be dipped into it—carpet rags do well—and laid along where they will obstruct the ants' path. The ants seem so averse to this substance that they leave at once. Dusting with the buhach also clears them out, but the treatment may have to be repeated every week or two.
We have been troubled not a little with ants in California, but have found the above methods very efficient in ridding our houses of this pest.

Pandora, so runs the myth, let all the ills of life out of her box to prey upon mankind, but shut the cover soon enough to prevent the escape of hope. Hope remains to every sufferer but it is only an ignis fatus unless it takes on some tangible form. The hope of recovery is treasured by every one who suffers from weak or bleeding lungs, obstinate and lingering cough, bronchitis or similar ailments, which, if neglected, or unskillfully treated lead on to consumption. That hope becomes a practical and tangible thing when it is based on the use of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery.
Such a hope is reasonable because thousands of men and women emaciated and weakened by disease have been made sound and well by the use of "Golden Medical Discovery."
Sick people are invited to consult Dr. R.V. Pierce, Buffalo, N.Y., by letter. All letters are carefully and considerably read and answered. Each letter is held as a sacred confidence and every answer is mailed in a plain envelope without any printing upon it. Write without fear and without fee.
"I was taken sick in July last year, and was not able to do any kind of work until November," writes Mr. Noel W. Orwin, of Langley, Alken Co., S.C. "Had been coughing up small, hard lumps of phlegm for about a year before I was taken down. It then called on a doctor, who attended me for two months, and said that one-half of my left lung was gone, and advised me to leave my home Charleston, S.C.) and go to the country, but did not say what sort of disease I had. I thought it was consumption, and wrote to you for advice. I took four bottles of Doctor Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery, which I sincerely believe has done me more good than all the other medicines I have ever taken."
The use of Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets does not beget the pill habit.

BUENA PARK.
Among the many guests from abroad to attend the Lovett-Brewer wedding were: Mr. and Mrs. Jotham Bixby, Long Beach; Harry Bixby, Arizona Hugh May, Mr. and Mrs. W.S.Purdy, Mr. and Mrs. S.L.Purdy and family, F.S.Purdy, Mr. and Mrs.J.H.Williams, Los Angeles; Mrs.L.C.Purdy, Miss Marie Purdy, Pomona; Miss Beryl Smith, Pasadena. The wedding gifts were numerous and costly. Among the most conspicuous was some silver that was a wedding gift to the groom's grandmother held in trust for his wedding day; a complete dinner set of Haviland china, carving set, table cloths and napkins, considerable cut glass and silver, cake set, onyx clock, tete-a-tete tea set and other gifts from the relatives. "The Nixies" gave a decorated cake set. A "four-story" fruit cake, one of the gifts, was cut at the wedding dinner by the bride. The home of the bride's parents was most beautifully decorated with pink and white floral designs, entwined with smilax and white satin ribbon in the reception-room. The dining-room was a poem in yellow and white, with yellow bands of satin ribbon from the ceiling to table. The church, where the ceremony took place, was artistically decorated with garlands of peppers and a profusion of yellow and white chrysanthemums. A large pyramid of white and green was at the back of the chancel. Rev.D.W.Morgan performed the ceremony in a very impressive manner. Alvah Hasson and Walter Tibbetts were the ushers.. At the close of the ceremony a flashlight picture was taken.
Congratulations were given in the church. The happy pair are now enjoying Coronado. On their return they

estimated that the California bean crop will, as a whole, not fall more than 25 per cent below the normal output. Crop of Limas is light; old and new crop will not amount to more than 400 carloads, as against a normal yield of 1200 to 1500.
Sugar campaign at Chino is ended; it lasted two months. Sugar percentage average was high, running much of the time 17 per cent. More than 44,000 tons of beets were sliced. Oxnard crushed about 70,000 tons.
The celery crop of the Peatlands estimated at 1000 carloads. Celery buyers in some instances are paying as high as $225 an acre for the crop as it stands on the ground.
Oranges begin to color; weather has been favorable, but it is believed that amount to be sent forward for holiday trade will be less than last year. Output for coming season is now estimated from 14,000 to 16,000 carloads.

G. Dun & Company's Review of Trade Conditions for October in Southern California.
The aggregate movement of trade distribution continues very large, many markets have grown less eminent and the great industries strive to meet an unprecedented demand. Wool and cotton show length, both in raw and manufactured materials.
The cereal market has been for the sixth trifle duller, with slight variances in prices. Railroad earnings show substantial increase over October of this year, and foreign exchange rolled a balance of many millions on the east side.
In our immediate district the month brought important changes in the outfit. Some rain fell and farmers are sowing and seeding. The rain did no damage to raisins, but some injury to hay at outside prices, but no tendency speculation. The bean harvest is out ended, and in some localities the aid is better than anticipated. It is
