SNAP SHOTS AT THE NEWS Moses H. Sherman, the Los Angeles capitalist, has been sued by the Pacific bank for $250,000 and an accounting. The bank, as a corporation, through its president, H. G. Meyers, alleges that Sherman violated an agreement by which he was to give the bank one-half of 51 per cent of the stock of the Los Angeles consolidated electric railway. It is asserted that Sherman appropriated all of the stock and has disposed of it for $500,000. The bank demands that one-half of this sum, alleged to be due it, shall be restored, with interest, and such other sums as may be found to be owing to the plaintiff by the defendant. Some regular army officer has written a letter to the Washington Times, wherein he concludes that Admiral Dewey, being the "only real war hero," cannot dodge the presidential nomination in 1900, and he says: On December 13, 1899, Rear Admiral Dewey is to be retired. He will reach San Francisco the middle of March or the first of April, 1900. A great reception will be tendered him which will surpass that given Grant on the return through the Golden Gate from the journey around the world. The city councils of San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver and Chicago have already made preliminary arrangements for the reception of Dewey. He will be banqueted at San Francisco, dined in Los Angeles, lunched at Carson City and received in Salt Lake, all within a week, and a spontaneous presidential boom will be inaugurated. Admiral Dewey has already proved himself a past master in the art of naval warfare, and an adept in deftly handling intricate diplomatic problems, and he has now displayed a rare knowledge of the art of raising sunken vessels. The navy department was much gratified to receive a cablegram from Admiral Dewey the other day which indicated that the fighting admiral has not permitted the fruits of his victory in Mahila harbor on May 1 to be forever lost. Secretary Long hurriedly posted the telegram from Admiral Dewey, which was dated at Manila, November 30, and reads as follows: "The Isla de Luzon, Isla de Cuba, Don Juan de Austria raised and docked. My anticipations as to their value fully realized. Will leave shortly for Hong Kong on their own steam." These Spanish ships are among the ten which were sunk by Admiral Dewey and lay off Cavite arsenal in the deep waters of Manila bay. The thirteen articles covering the county's money is given with the following as sureties: George W. Ford, $20,000; M. A. Forster, $40,000; W. B. Hervey, $20,000; C. E. French, $20,000; D. H. Thomas, $10,000; B. G. Halcom, $10,000; J. S. Rice, $10,000; W. C. McClay, $10,000; G. W. Minter, $10,000; John West, $10,000; Joseph Yoch, $10,000; Mrs. Lydia A. Proble, $10,000; M. A. Menges, $10,000; W. S. Bartlett, $7000; D. R. Sterling and C. E. Utt, $3000 each. A Beautiful Present In order to further introduce ELASTIC STARCH (Flat Iron Brand), the manufacturers, J.C. Hubinger Bros. Co., of Keokuk, Iowa, have decided to GIVE AWAY a beautiful present with each package of starch sold. These presents are in the form of Beautiful Pastel Pictures They are 13x19 inches in size, and are entitled as follows: Lilacs and Pansies. Pansies and Marguerites. The thirteen articles covering the terms of the treaty of peace between the United States and Spain, which have been under discussion before the Peace Commission at Paris, embrace the following points: First—The relinquishment of sovereignty over and claim of title to Cuba. Second—The cession of Porto Rico and other Spanish possessions in the West Indies, together with Guam, in the Ladrones. Third—The cession of the Philippines. Fourth—The terms of the evacuation of the Philippines. Fifth—The pledge of the United States to preserve order in the Philippines pending the ratification of the treaty. Sixth—The release of military prisoners mutually. Seventh—The cession by Spain of the Island of Kuhua, or Strong Island, in the Carolines. Eighth—The mutual relinquishment of indemnity claims. Ninth—The religious freedom of the Carolines, assuring the rights of American missionaries there. Tenth—Cable-landing rights at points within the Spanish jurisdiction. Eleventh—The release by Spain of political prisoners for offenses in Cuba and Philippines. Twelfth—The pledge of the United States to inaugurate in the Philippines an "open-door" policy and to guarantee the same to Spain for at least twelve years. Thirteenth—A renewal of the treaties broken by the war. The drafts of articles submitted by the Spanish commissioners related to the nationality of inhabitants of ceded territory, the jurisdiction of courts, the cases pending in them, the continuing of grants and contracts for public works, services in the ceded territory and kindred matters. One article provides that the United States and Spain shall appoint an international commission of seven experts, each country to name one of its citizens, one Briton and one Frenchman, the German to be president. This commission is to determine the responsibility for the Maine disaster. If Spain is responsible she is to send a warship to salute the American flag at New York. If she is not, the United States are to pay all expenses of the commission. The boards of Sheriff-elect Lacy, Tax Collector Robinson and Treasurer Joplin have been filled with the County Recorder. Mr. Lacy gives his bond of $25,000 with the Fidelity and Deposit company by Maryland as surety. Fred M. Robinson gives security for double the amount of his $50,000 bond, with Thomas H. Nisson, each in the sum of $5000, Ira Chandler, with $20,000, and M. M. Crookshank and D. M. Dorman $15,000 as sureties. J. C. Joplin's bond of $200,000 for the safe handling of the county's money is given with the following as sureties: George W. Ford; $20,000; M. A. Forster; $40,000; W. B. Hervey; $20,000; C. E. The Kind You Have Always Bought Bears the Signature of Castoria Don Perrier, a young British Columbian Frenchman, brutally murdered his former sweetheart, Jennie Andrews, an English girl, at New Westminster. He shadowed her to a place known as the Green House and was shown to her room. He entered and locked the door. The next instant the inmates of the house heard a piercing shriek and pitiful appeals for mercy. They attempted to force the door. Perrier called from inside: "I've not quite done the job; just a moment." Then the door was thrown open by the Frenchman who was covered with blood from head to foot. Waving his hand in which he held a dripping knife, he invited the women to enter. Jennie Andrews was lying on the bed literally hacked to pieces, the murderer having deliberately mutilated the girl's body after life was extinct. It is said that he first met the girl in Australia. She discarded him and crossed the ocean to marry another man, who refused to keep his promise, and she drifted into evil ways. Perrier is a sailor, but is well educated and is reported to belong to an aristocratic family of Marsellles. California Limited. Santa Fe Route to Chicago, fastest regular train ever run across the continent. This service was resumed over the Santa Fe Route on Nov. 7th and marks the beginning of a speed record in the West, and the addition of many features of comfort and luxury not heretofore enjoyed in train service. The time from Los Angeles to Chicago has been reduced to 64 hours and 55 minutes or a trifle over two and one-half days, the fastest train that has ever been scheduled across the continent. The fine physical condition of the Santa Fe Route, coupled with the directness of the line, makes it possible to make and maintain the high rate of speed necessary to accomplish this. During the past two years a large sum of money has been expended for new trains, new ties, iron bridges, stone culverts, and solid ballast. The purpose of this great expense is to place the Santa Fe Route at the head of transportation lines west of Chicago, and although the work is not yet completed, it is far enough along to admit of the passenger trains of the Santa Fe Route taking precedence over all competitors not only in speed, but in comfort. The dining car services on the California Limited will be maintained at the same high standard as in the past, and travelers who know claim that no such steamers COOBS BAY and ORDAN SAINT AND LAUNDER SAINT VIRGINIA CARPENTER SAINT BARBARA GAVIOTA PORT HARBOUR SUCSAN SIMONE MONTEREY CRUSAT AT 6:30 p.m., Nov. 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 Southern Pacific Company. We now know that there is no such thing as an Elixir of Life. But we have learned that life may be prolonged by those who take the right measures. Any man or woman who will take care of health and take the right remedies for ill health, may live to a ripe old age. When a man feels out of sorts, when he gets up in the morning tired out after a restless night, and goes home in the evening completely knocked out with his day's work without appetite or ambition, he is a sick man. If he does not take the right remedy he will soon be in the grasp of consumption, nervous prostration, malaria, or some other serious malady. A man in this condition should at once resort to Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. It is the best of all medicines for hard-working men and women. It makes the appetite keen and hearty. It gives sound and refreshing sleep. It tones and strengthens the whole system. It invigorates the heart and nerves. It makes digestion perfect, the liver active and the blood pure. It cures 98 per cent of all cases of consumption. It strengthens weak lungs and cures bronchitis, spitting of blood and obstinate coughs. It is the great blood-maker and flesh-builder. It does not make flabby flesh like cod liver oil, but firm, healthy, muscular tissue. It does not make corpulent people more corpulent. Thousands have testified to its marvelous merits. Sold by all medicine dealers. You know what you want. It is not a dealer's business to tell you. Send to Dr. R.V.Pierce, Buffalo, N.Y., for a free copy of the "People's Common Sense Medical Adviser." I am very pleased to state that since I took the agency for Chamberlain's medicines the sale has been very large, more especially of the Cough Remedy. In two years I have sold more of this particular remedy than of all other makes for the previous five years. As to its efficacy, I have been informed by scores of persons of the good results they have received form it, and know its value from the use of it in my own household.
