The canning company has called for the payment of its fourth assessment, which will pay up the stock in full. The assessment is $4 per share, and it is hoped and confidently expected that shareholders will be prompt in paying their respective amounts. We cannot build a cannery without money, and the activity that has characterized the work at the packing house during the past fortnight but demonstrates the fact that everything is being put under way for an early beginning of operations. Expensive machinery has been purchased and is being placed in position, sugar has been contracted for, tinware bought and everything placed in readiness for the beginning of the initial season of this young enterprise which means so much to the people of this community. Never has an undertaking started out with better prospects of success, or under more favorable augury. The Directors have been in correspondence during some weeks past with a number of the leading canners of Southern California and the East, and especially advantageous offers have been made for the early disposal of the canned fruit. With careful management (and we feel assured the enterprise is in competent and painstaking hands) the initial season should be one of material profit to the shareholders. There is at present a more active demand for canned California fruit than in many years, at increased prices over former years, for first-class goods. There is no reason why we should not participate in the good to accrue to our canning establishment by this upward turn of the market. Certainly a more energetic Board of Directors was never elected to manage an enterprise. They have striven early and late for the success of the undertaking; they have secured bargains in machinery that would be impossible to men less experienced in the intricacies of business affairs; they have cast aside that which was found unworthy, and have selected that which suited their purposes, with the result that the enterprise has been at all times the gainer by the fact of having experienced and capable men at soldier was given a ration of choice food in an ornamental lunch box, inscribed with hospitable and patriotic sentiments, among them being: "May the memory of 1861 be effaced by the welcome of 1898." PLACENTIA. Again rumors of a railroad going through here are exciting the people. We hope this time to see it go through. Mum is the word. A. Montgomery's house is very nearly completed. Mrs. A. S. Bradford visited Los Angeles on Monday last. A. S. Bradford is putting in a flume on the east side of his ranch. W. B. Hervey has put in a long cement flume. Mr. and Mrs. George Betts have a young son. Mother and child doing well. The last of the orange crop is being moved out fast. Low prices prevail. A surprise party was given to Mr. and Mrs. Staley on the anniversary of their birthday, Thursday evening. The guests present were: Mr. and Mrs. McFadden, Clarence, Tom and Robbie McFadden, Mr. and Mrs. Pendleton and children, Mr. Ed. Crowther, Miss Sarah and Ruby Crowther, Peter Hansen, Misses Anna and Christina Hansen, Mr. and Mrs. John Evans and daughter Grace, Mr. and Mrs. James East, Capt. Wrede, Mr. and Mrs. Chas Wagner, Mr. and Mrs. K. Dunham, Mr. and Mrs. Edwards, Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Bradford, Miss Elsie Bradford, Mr. and Mrs. James Forbes, Mr. and Mrs. McCulloch, Mrs. Montgomery and son Chester, Dewitt Montgomery, P. H. Krick, Miss Beckett, Mr. and Mrs. Laidlaw, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Krick, Mrs. Dr. Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Devonshire, Mrs. Strain, Miss Maggie Strain, Mr. and Mrs. J. Nenno. Mr. and Mrs. Staley were taken completely by surprise. The party collected at Mr. Pendleton's, and went down in a body. The party invitations were extended by Mrs. Devonshire, who also selected the presents, and who presented a chair to Mr. and Mrs. Staley in a neat speech: "Mr. and Mrs. Staley: Being in possession of the fact that you were both born on the same day of the month, I have taken the liberty and the entire responsibility upon myself to invite the friends and neighbors to be present this evening to join you in celebrating your birthday. Now, if we are intruding, my shoulders are broad, and you may put the blame on me, and me alone. We have brought with us a gift as a memento of our esteem for you, and I hope you will receive it in the same spirit it is given. Now, Mr. and Mrs. Staley, in behalf of all present and some who could not be with INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY Essay Delivered at the Comprehensive Exercises of the Fullerton High School by Worthington Means of the nineteenth century is being away, but it is leaving behind most interesting period of history. History, with all her vacillations, all her eagerness as the fruit of mankind offer no parallel. The mislems that loom across the veil of the new century surpass all magnitude all the questions heretofore been solved as to pile of Cheops surpasses in other human monument. We have reached, as we have chased mountain of civilization, at which it is impossible to rise A crisis is imminent. The hidden in mist and darkness sitte to take it, for who is it may not be fatal? Who do we move, which we hope so striven for, who will not be a step proven wrong will dash our high pinnacle down, down darkness—the mire, the cage which we have been struck ages. The world waits we breathe next move. We will be taken we can only whether propitious or fatal Stygian darkness. But there and will be taken, and when taken the change will be rare not doubt, for history shows changes advance speedily set in motion. Glance back along the visit to 1789. Quebec, the proud France, has fallen acknowledges England's America absolute, and yet short years later Washington Father of His Country is President of an independent United States of America broken forever the bands o' unless it be an honorable future Historical record The few Abolitionists in America hooted as fools and fanatics barely thirty years later, tion's blackest curse has been away by the blood of thousands bravest sons And now Germany's thousand-year unity seems as visionary as less than a decade United speaking with pride of the land What then is the teaching? What but this: The changes centuries though preparation come with a force when once the nation paired for them. Awe-inspiring changes hastened strata of humanity HAD Anaheim had the normal amount of rainfall we should have had this year the most prosperous season in our history. The Alamitos sugar factory, for instance, which last season consumed the beets from 3500 acres, contemplated working into sugar this year the product of 7000 acres, its capacity having been trebled since the close of last season. It would have had a four months’ campaign, whereas the drouth will curtail the season to probably 15 days. With the normal amount of rainfall, the beet acreage in this valley would have aggregated 10,000 acres. Perhaps 1500 acres of beets is a fair estimate of the beets now in the field. However (and here is where the great diversity of the products of the soil hereabout comes in), the walnut crop is the largest in years, and the deciduous crop is in many sections “immense.” We are establishing a canery in Anaheim, to use up the deciduous fruit output, and the enterprise starts out under every augury of a flattering success to attend the initial campaign. The many cement irrigating ditches, filled with water rushing on to feed the valley fields with its life-giving fluid, greet the eye on all sides. There is probably more refreshing verdure in Orange county than in any other county in Southern California. There is vastly more hay in the county than was predicted two months ago, and while the grain crop is short on account of the deficient rainfall, irrigated fruits never looked better. This is a dry year throughout California, but Anaheim and the country tributary to it are keeping up with the procession and look forward to a year of prosperity. SMELTZERVILLE is ten or twelve miles from the cannery at Anaheim, due southwest, with no river or gulch to cross, and very little to do in road building, except to lay ties and rails. All we need is some one to agitate the question of building a railroad between the two places, and the advantages of building the road will be apparent. According to a letter received from that section, if the Southern Pacific company will build a line from Benedict Station due south five and a half miles, intercept Smeltzerville and run into the depot at Anaheim only one who also selected the presents, and who presented a chair to Mr. and Mrs. Staley in a neat speech: “Mr. Now, Mr. and Mrs. Staley, in behalf of all present and some who could not be with us, I take pleasure in presenting each of you a rocking-chair, and I hope that during your hours of leisure and meditation you can rest and rock at your ease. I think every one present will join me in wishing you many happy returns of the day. Now, dear friends, we will try to entertain you in our own peculiar way.” A few remarks were made by Mr. Staley, thanking all for the pleasant surprise. Two solos were sung by James Forbes. Music was given by Miss Crowther, Mrs. Laldlaw and Ed Crowther, followed by ice cream and cake. A new way of selecting partners for supper was introduced by Mrs. Devonshire. Two packs of cards were given out—one to the gents and one to the ladies. The gentleman had to find the lady holding the card to match the one he held; for instance, the gent holding the ace of hearts must find the lady holding the ace of hearts, and so on. It caused much amusement. The party broke up at 11:30 o’clock, after spending an enjoyable evening. Placentia, June 14, 1898. REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS. For The Week Ending June 13, 1898. THAT historic regiment, the Sixth Massachusetts which marched through Baltimore on April 19, 1841, and shed some of the first blood of the civil war, has new associations with Baltimore now. It was invited to stop there on its way south, and receiving permission from the War Department, it acceded; then invitation. It did not stop long, but it had a great time. Baltimore turned out to meet it, and it marched across the city from station to station through streets laid with cheering multitudes, whose enthusiasm seemed to have no limitations save those of physical strength. Essay Delivered at the Commencement Exercises of the Fullerton High School by Worthington Means of this City. The nineteenth century is fast passing away, but it is leaving behind the most interesting period of the world's history. History, with all her whims, all her vacillations, all her experience, gained as the fruit of many ages, can offer no parallel. The mighty problems that loom across the veiled visage of the new century surpass as much in magnitude all the questions that have heretofore been solved as the massive pile of Cheops surpasses in size every other human monument. We seem to have reached, as we have climbed the mountain of civilization, a crag from which it is impossible to rise higher. A crisis is imminent. The next step is hidden in mist and darkness. We hesitate to take it, for who is certain that it may not be fatal? Who knows that the move, which we hope may reach the goal so striven for, who knows that it will not be a step into mid-air? A step proven wrong will dash us from our high pinnacle down, down into the darkness—the mire, the chaos, from which we have been struggling for ages. The world waits with bated breath the next move. When that will be taken we can only conjecture; whether propitious or fatal is wrap in Stygian darkness. But that it must and will be taken, and when once it is taken the change will be rapid we do not doubt, for history shows that great changes advance speedily when once set in motion. Glance back along the vista of years to 1789. Quebec, the proud city of proud France, has fallen. The world acknowledges England's power in America absolute, and yet only thirty short years later Washington, the Father of His Country, is inaugurated President of an independent statehood. The United States of America has broken forever the bands of England, unless it be an honorable alliance in the future. Historical records of 1832: The few Abolitionists in America are hooted as fools and fanatics. "Tis 1862 barely thirty years later, and the nation's blackest curse has been washed away by the blood of thousands of her bravest sons. And now 'tis 1864, Germany's thousand-year dream of unity seems as visionary as ever. In less than a decade United Germany is speaking with pride of the Fatherland. What then is the teaching of history? What but this: That great changes, centuries though they be in preparation, come with a resistless force when once the nations are prepared for them. Awe-inspiring changes have startled the nineteenth century; the middle and lower strata of humanity have been industries into monopolies is destined to usher in Socialism. Many people repeat fondly: "Competition is the soul of trade. Why do they not see that this soul, together with many other souls and bodies, also, has been almost completely destroyed by the monopoly of trusts? The power to compete in the great industries is as effectually barred from all, except the few, as night from the day. That monopolies shall exist is a foregone conclusion. The only question is, shall the monopolies own the people, or shall the people own the monopolies? Only half a century ago there was but one millionaire for every two million people. Today there is one for every 15,000. Then it took one-quarter of the people to buy one-half of the nation's wealth. Today one-twentieth of one per cent to buy out the remaining 70,000,000. What a tale the figures tell! How many happy homes have been made desolate? How many tenement houses filled? What say you? That wealth must thus be concentrated to carry on trade? What said Daniel Webster? The freest government cannot long endure where the tendency of the law is to create a rapid union of property in the hands of the few. Never before in the history of the world has the accumulation of wealth been so rapid as at present in the United States. But socialists do not condemn monopolies instead they proclaim that the principle is sound. They simply demand that another step be taken in the same direction! That the principle be extended. If production and distribution are economic under partial socialism they would certainly be more so under pure socialism. The question may and undoubtedly does arise. What will be the substitute for competition? Exactly what is now social esteem. "Fear of want is the basis of excessive accumulation." "Tis only the despised miser who loves money for its own sake. A true man will do more for honor than for money.Honor! That is it! "Tis that stirs the heart of our matchless manhood, when the call for soldiers, to battle in the cause of humanity, rings through the land. No hardship, no danger, is considered when honor is the goal. "What profits it the human Prometheus that he has stolen fire from heaven to be his servant, and that the spirits of the earth and air obey him if the vulture of Pauperism is continually to tear his very vitals and keep him on the brink of destruction?" O! poverty, poverty, thou hast been a gentle nurse to socialism! Thou hast brought it safely from its infancy, to childhood and now to man's estate. But thy child is become a man only to rise up against thee. Because a man has accumulated a million is no sign that he has created that amount of wealth. No! It simply proves that the present system is wrong. Because it allows one man to accumulate the product of so much labor. Humanity is much like a green and red lights of a merchantman and the collier kept right ahead on the northward course toward Guantanamo, where she hoped to be able to find some means of getting her coal to Admiral Caevera's ships in the harbor of Santiago. Coming into close range, the St. Louis surprised the collier by sending a shot across her bows. The Twickenham, instead of stopping, put on full steam and tried to get away. Quickly overhauling the Englishman the St. Louis fired again. The captain of the collier, seeing flight was impossible, hove to and was boarded by a boat's crew from the St. Louis. The British captain at first made a vigorous denial that he was carrying coal for the Spanish fleet. His vessel was searched, however, by the men from the St. Louis. In the fireroom, a man in overalls was found who spoke only Spanish. After a vigorous cross-examination by Capt. Goodrich of the St. Louis this man admitted he was a Spanish officer in charge of the cargo. On the approach of the St. Louis he had thrown his papers and commission overboard. He appeared to be badly scared at the way things had turned out. He was sent as a prisoner of war to Key West on board the captured steamer. The St. Louis has recently been engaged in cutting cables around Cuba. Lieut. Allen said when she passed Guantanamo last night the Stars and Stripes were flying over the marines on the hill. The American men of war were lying in the harbor, but there had been no engagement yet with the Spanish. COUNTY POLITICS. "Go Away From Home to Hear the News." From the Los Angeles Express, June 13. Tis 1862 barely thirty years later, and the nation's blackest curse has been washed away by the blood of thousands of her bravest sons. And now 'tis 1864. Germany's thousand-year dream of unity seems as visionary as ever. In less than a decade United Germany is speaking with pride of the Fatherland. What then is the teaching of history? What but this: That great changes, centuries though they be in preparation, come with a resistless force when once the nations are prepared for them. Awe-inspiring changes have startled the nineteenth century; the middle and lower strata of humanity have been almost if not completely enfranchised; wonderful systems of communication have been established; applications on an immense scale of steam and electricity to machinery; telegraphy, ticking the heart-throbs of nations round the globe; ships that have narrowed the broadest seas of the eighteenth century to mere straits; this is the work of the nineteenth century. These great changes seem to be but forerunners of those which are soon to follow, and which are destined, by their grandeur, to entirely overshadow those which we have already witnessed. It is a time of innovation greater than the world has ever known. Are we, as a people, capable of choosing and inaugurating reforms, or sustaining those already in existence, which shall be for the betterment and happiness of the people? The horoscope of the future is blazoned with industrial innovations which are rapidly materializing. The mighty wheels of industry go faster, for science is the engineer. Wealth increases immensely, yet amid the rumbling of the wheels, the din of the machinery, we hear the muttered grumblings of the masses of toilers—work, work, work. The condition and sentiments of these and how to meet them is one of the most stupendous problems that confront our civilization to-day, and it will not be downed. To a degree they are conscious of real wrongs and imagine many more. What power have we, what power have we, when the aroused, take their own methods of adjusting their grievances? Turn to the people and back comes the answer, an ever-increasing chorus, "No man hath power over us." Think you they will quietly wait until things change? No. You can oppress with impunity so far, but no farther. Base, brow-beat and starve them to a certain point; but when this point is reached, beware! At this point, when our civilization sees on the brink of chaos, Socialism steps in and proposes her simple remedy, and would erect her bulwarks to arrest the fatal plunge. In the words of another, "The central aim of Socialism is to terminate the divorce of the workers from the natural sources of existence, to avoid the evils of degrading a large class of society into mere drudges and wage-earners, and another into idleness and vice; to crush out adulterations and ineffective workmanship in all forms, and secure a more equitable distribution of the means and appliances of happiness and culture." To do this the industries of the nation shall be carried on by associated labor. Wealth-producing capital shall be public property. Collective ownership is not visionary. Our own government furnishes many examples of the utility and economy of the idea, of which the socialized postal service is one. In some countries the telegraph and railroads are living examples. Cities offer examples in the socialized water works, gas machines, electric lighting, etc. These steps have been taken without disaster. What profits it the human Promise that he has stolen fire from heaven to be his servant, and that the spirits of the earth and air obey him if the vulture of Pauperism is continually to tear his very vitals and keep him on the brink of destruction?" O! poverty, poverty, thou hast been a gentle nurse to socialism! Thou hast brought it safely from its infancy, to childhood and now to man's estate. But thy child is become a man only to rise up against thee. Because a man has accumulated a million is no sign that he has created that amount of wealth. Not it simply proves that the present system is wrong. Because it allows one man to accumulate the product of so much labor. Humanity is much like a see-saw. When one goes up into wealth and luxury, many sink into poverty and misery. We are prone to defend Dives by saying that he gives employment and must therefore be a benefite. What new law of nature is this, that one who works not can create wealth? As well may we say that a man may raise himself by tugging at his boot straps. Over-production is one of the greatest evil effects of the present competing system. The markets are flooded with goods, causing an immediate decrease in values; business becomes stagnant, industries languish, workmen are discharged, money is a minus quantity, banks close, one or two fall, which acts not as oil on the troubled waters, but as oil on the burning mass, and the beautiful ship of prosperity sinks in a whirlpool of confusion and ruin. The fire, the tornado, has come—is gone, and the land is desolate. Does the gold or silver question cause this? No. It is purely and undeniably due to the wrong system of production and distribution. It wastes five-sixths of the industrial forces of the world. It puts a premium on greed and corruption. It should be abolished. What are the objections to socialists? They advocate and always have advocated a fair compensation. Is there anything unjust or bordering on anarchy in this? Can you imagine a Nihilist with his treacherous weapons among those whose principles are exact justice to all? And yet men erotize against the plan as if it were the vilest form of Russian Nihilism. But opposition only proves its strength. That Socialism and Nihilism are not synonymous is proven by the existing state of society in Germany and Russia. The former, which contains the fewest Nihilist of any European nation, registers 2,000,000 Socialistic votes, and the latter, which contains the greatest number of Nihilists, has the fewest Socialists. Why is this? Because Socialism aims at the extension of government, and Nihilism its extinction. Let it be nov and forever understood, Socialism and Nihilism are diametrically antagonistic. We have seen the great curses which the crisis of a false system of production and distribution have brought upon us. We see these crises ever multiplying, ever affecting more people and larger territory. We have seen this tendency to concentration. We have arrived at a stage when should the monopoly be transferred to the State; the change could be effected without friction—without disaster either to the State or the individual. This is no new theory; all along the ages the lamps of socialism have been lighted; men have advocated it, lived it, and to a certain extent practiced it. We may see one of these lamps trimmed and burning today in the City of Brotherly Love. The founder has the love of the whole American people for his patriotism. Wannamaker's establishment in Philadelphia is an object lesson to the world that Socialism is the true solution of the social and political problem. Why, then, should Socialism be feared? It seeks to remove the most prominent cause of the failures of civilization to make men true and happy by adjusting the political economy of the nation that its sons and daughters may in unity of labor avoid exhausting their vital forces to no profit. It does not propose confiscation of property—never has, and never will. It simply claims the justice of public ownership of capital under which such stupendous inequalities as now exist would be impossible. Let it be clearly understood. Socialism proposes no "grand divide." Neither does it propose to abolish private property. Beautiful paintings, masterpieces of art, rich furnishings, jewels, heraldry; in fact, everything shall remain private property except that which produces wealth. As it deals with economic relations only, the family relations would not be disturbed; neither would the inheritance of private wealth be impaired. A person could bequeath his wealth in exactly the same way that he does now. That production has been socialized has been exemplified in the great manufactories. Then why should not the means of production also be socialized? The very magnitude of the tools stamp them for public ownership. The capitalistic class is constantly narrowing, and the triumphant march of concentration with great strides. The greater part of our people are already dependent on the capitalists. Chauncey M. Depew said: "Fifty men in the United States could meet and decide to close business activity, and the wheels of industry must stop." Capitalists have united in joint stock companies; these have formed syndicates or trusts. This rapid union of New York, June 13.—A dispatch from Mole St. Nicholas, Hayti, says: The merchantman captured by the auxiliary cruiser St. Louis just off Morant Point, Jamaica, last Friday night was the British steamer Twickenham. On board the Twickenham are 3200 tons of coal for the Spanish fleet. She has been sent as a prize to Key West. The captured steamer is a London vessel which was sent to Martinique, expecting to effect a junction with Admiral Cervera's squadron at that island. The fleet had departed before her arrival and she was detained there as a suspicious vessel by the French authorities. Word was brought to Admiral Sampon that the Twickenham had left on Wednesday. The St. Louis was immediately dispatched to intercept her. Twenty miles out of Kingston on Friday night the St. Louis fell in with the Twickenham. The armed liner showed me this tendency to concentration. We have arrived at a stage when, should the monopoly be transferred to the State, the change could be effective without friction—without disaster either to the State or the individual. Our own government proposes as a national enterprise to plant huge fields of sweet potatoes in Cuba to feed her starving thousands—this is Socialism. Glancing across the Atlantic, we see the whole system of steam communication in Germany under public control and ownership, and this is Socialism. All these innovations we look upon as so many steps in the right direction. Many other examples might be cited, but enough have been given to prove that the doctrine is not only theoretically correct, but a practical, working success. Yea, more; even now a few are enjoying the beneficial results. Blessed will be that day when the few have increased to the many. How this will be brought about no one knows. The thing for us is to be alive to the situation, and leave history to unravel the future. J. W. MEANS. WASHINGTON, June 13.—The first division of United States troops to begin the invasion of Cuba sailed from Key West at daybreak this morning. The expedition comprised 773 officers and 14,564 enlisted men, all under the command of Maj.-Gen. Shafter. A large force of transports conveyed the troops, under the oscort of a strong squadron of warships, ranging from immense battleship to the small gunboat and armed fast-sailing yacht. MOLE ST. NICHOLAS, June 12, 6 p.m.—The expedition from Tampa, under Maj.-Gen. Shafter, convoiued by American warships, is anxiously awaited by the fleet off Santiago de Cuba. Two Can Play It. The ancient jest regarding the ditto sign was revived in Cleveland not long ago, and it loses little of its sparkle because of its age. Into the office of a local manufacturing concern, whose product is wire and wire hardware specialties, an elderly customer from out of town recently stalked. "This here bill," he remarked, "is wrong. You've added where you should have subtracted." "How's that?" inquired the bookkeeper. "You've got me charged with $20 when I don't owe you but $12," replied the stranger. "But I don't see how you make that out," said the bookkeeper as he glanced at the bill. "Here's one item of $16 and another of $4. That certainly aggregates $20." "Well," said the aged party, "I'm perfectly willing to stand by the bill. It's your own bill, you know, and I'll pay you just what it calls for." "Well, it calls for $20." "Yes, it does, added, but not subtracted." What in the world do you mean? "I mean this," said the aged patron. And he spread the bill flat on the counter. The bookkeeper glanced at it again. These are the items he read: "Sold to Mr. Phineas T. Blank: 4 iron wheelbarrows at $4." $16 1 wooden do at $4. Kindly tell me," said the bookkeeper, "how you figure that total any lower." The aged customer's eyes flashed triumphantly. "Easy," he cried. "Here you've charged me with four wheelbarrows, $16. That's all right. And then right below you say that one wouldn't do, but instead of taking off the $4 you add it on. Here's your $12."—Cleveland Plain Dealer. A Curious Legal Decision. The following anecdote is sent by a Kentucky correspondent, who says it is the exact truth: "A young man who had not found it convenient to pay a tailor's bill was brought up on a creditor's bill by the cruel tailor before a very kind hearted vice chancellor, who liked the youth. He was handsomely dressed and wore a costly diamond stud in his shirt bosom, but declared under oath that he had no property except his wearing apparel. The tailor's lawyer claimed that a diamond stud was not an article of exempt apparel and asked for its surrender, but the judge ruled that the diamond button held the parts of the shirt together and its removal would lead to indecent exposure of the person. Then the lawyer urged that the shirt was of a new kind which buttoned in the back, but the judge met this by saying: 'The presumption of the law is that shirts button in front, and the court does not judicially know that shirts ever button in the back. The court will not require the defendant to submit to an examination to rebut the presumption.' And so the diamond remained in the bosom which cherished it." A Narrow Escape. WASHINGTON, June 14.—News has been received from various points that Germany is collecting a menacing force at Manila. At Berlin the belief is that Germany's entire eastern Asiatic squadron is being concentrated there. The German warships now there are the Kaiser, Kaiserine, Augusta, Irena and Carmen, with a total of 1605 men. The commanders of the Kaiser and Kaiserine are said to have startling orders as to what to do should the Americans bombard Manila. The President and his cabinet to-day discussed this disquieting news of Germany's activity in reference to the Philippines. The hope is entertained here that the militant Teuton will realize that he would hopelessly licked by the United States in a naval war. In the estimation of our experts the German navy is inferior to the American and would be speedily defeated. Admiral Dewey, when cabled instructions recently, was urged to permit no landing of marines by foreign warships without the distinct understanding that such a landing does not lift the blockade and is merely temporary and tolerated for humane reasons only. A cabin officer said this evening: "Any interference on the part of Germany in the Philippines means war with Germany. If Germany does not realize this, she had better do so at once. We intend to hold the Philippines, and the administration will tolerate no ransomense from Germany or any other country." RECORD OF THE TEMPERATURE. Maximum. Minimum. Average.
