State of California, county of Orange, as. To the Board of Directors of the Anaheim Union Water Company—Gentlemen: I desire to bring to your attention the following facts: I am the owner of ten shares of stock in the Anaheim Union Water Company. A reference to the record kept by the Secretary of your company of the stock that was voted at the stockholders' meeting on January 29th shows that the said ten shares were voted by Mr. G. B. Key. I was not present at said meeting, neither did I at any time authorize Mr. Key, or any other person, either verbally or in writing, to vote my said shares, and an inspection of the proxies on file with your Secretary discloses the fact that no proxy from me to Mr. Key or to any other person is on file. I respectfully submit these facts to you for your action as you may deem expedient and proper. C. W. ALMES. Subscribed and sworn to before me, this 3d day of February, 1898. Richard Melrose, Notary Public in and for the county of Orange. Mr. Key stated that he could not tell whether he voted the stock or not. He had been made the custodian of a large number of shares of stock, proxies to which had been gathered by others, and so far as Mr. Almes' charges were concerned, he felt himself free of all culpability. The letter was filed, to be taken up in executive session. The following communication from F. W. Braun of Los Angeles was read: LOS ANGELES. Jan. 19, 1898. W. R. Blennerhassett, Sec. A. U.W. Co., Anaheim, Cal.—Dear Sir," I ask that you place before your Board of Directors the matter of extending the cement ditch along the Garden Grove road, which starts from the large ditch at the railroad crossing, on the Garden Grove road, and extends about 150 feet across the east end of my property, and which ditch I think should be extended by the water company a little tarter south. As it now is it is not only unsightly, but whenever water is run through it, it washes out ugly holes and is likely to unnecessarily flood my property. I would be pleased to have you submit the matter at your earliest opportunity, and have you advise me as to what the company decides to do in the premises. Awaiting your favors, I remain, respectfully, F. W. BRAUN. The communication was filled. Mr. Fay brought up the matter of the plans and specifications for the new building to be erected by the company, saying the same ought to be approved by the old board, it having gone to the expense of procuring them, and he deeming it irregular to leave them go over for consideration by the new board. After a short discussion it was moved by Director Browning and seconded by Director Nebelung, that the plans and specifications be approved and that bids for the construction of the building be advertised for. Carried unanimously. Mr. Fay also referred to the necessity for having a right-of-way book, as decided upon by the Directors some weeks ago. He considered that the old board should pass upon the matter before adjourning, and after discussion it was moved by Director Benchley and seconded by Director Nebelung that Engineer Sherwood proceed to the preparation of such a book. After a short executive session the old board adjourned sine die. At the conclusion of the executive session the doors were opened, and the Committee reported a number of purchases for the power house; a small car of oil had been received for the boilers. Trustee Groat of the Committee on Public Improvements reported the laying of a larger foundation for the engine at the power house, and the patching up of the holes in the cement floor made by the installers of the new electric lights; also the putting in of a cement floor in the engine room and in front of the boilers. As a supplemental report, he stated that since the putting in of the new foundation Engineer Byers had informed him that there is no vibration of the engine. All reports were approved and accepted. Under the head of new business, Trustee Helmsen brought up the matter of the purchase of an ampere meter, the same having been suggested by Engineer Byers as a necessity for the power house. The cost of an ampere meter varies, he said, from $45 to $55. After discussion the committee was given authority to purchase the same. Clerk Nebelung stated that Marshal Steadman had reported him as having been delinquent in the payment of his electric light charges for January. He stated that he refused to pay on the ground that he believed his meter did not correctly register the amount of light consumed. The amount of the charge is $175. To the Marshal, with instructions to test the meter. C.R. Spoerl wrote protesting against the continuance of an alleged nuisance on Broadway, the same being the irrigation of an alfalfa patch, the water therefrom flooding his yard. Trustee Groat also gave evidence upon this matter, and after discussion the Clerk was instructed to write the water company to so construct its ditch as to abate the nuisance. Trustee Rust called upon Trustee Helmsen to act as chairman while he introduced the following resolution of thanks to Trustee Lewis, who has taken his departure from the city: ANAHEIM, Feb. 8, 1898. WHEREAS, Trustee A. L. Lewis has severed his connection with the Board of Trustees of the City of Anaheim; and WHEREAS, He has worked faithfully for the interests and advancement of the city; and WHEREAS, The Board of Trustees wish to show their appreciation of such services, and their regret at his departure; Therefore be it Resolved That a vote of thanks be extended Mr. Lewis in appreciation of his labors for the city's welfare. Resolved That these resolutions be spread upon the minutes and a copy be sent to Mr. Lewis. The resolutions were carried unanimously. Trustee Helmsen reported that the new electric light paraphernalia is short one helio lamp globe, which the contractors should, he thought, be called upon to make good. At the time of installation of the works, a runaway occurred, and the globe was broken. It had never been replaced, and he moved the clerk be instructed to communicate with the contractors, requesting them to replace the globe. Carried. Bills to the amount $1263 80 were audited and ordered paid. Adjourned. DECIDUOUS FRUITS. Articles of Incorporation of the Deciduous Fruit Association of Anaheim. A meeting of the deciduous fruit growers of this vicinity was held at the City Hall on Monday morning at which a preliminary organization was effected and articles of incorporation subscribed to, designating the association for purposes related to voting bonds in $6000 for each town. Mr. Browning nominated Mr. Fay for permanent President, and that gentleman was unanimously elected to that office. Mr. Benchley was elected Vice President, W. H. Blennherhassett Secretary at $65 per month, and L. Goldwater Treasurer at $10 per month—the usual salaries. Mr. Pierotti addressed the board saying that in his opinion it would best subserve the interests of the company to advertise for bids for Superintendent, and he moved that the salary of that official be reduced from $90 a month to $75. Seconded by Mr. McFadden. The motion was lost: Ayes—Pierotti and McFadden; noes—Browning, Benchley, Nebelung. A communication was received from J. A. Vail of Fullerton making application for the position of Superintendent of the company, at a salary of $75 per month. Mr. Vail wrote that he would give his entire time to the attention of the affairs of the office, and would if elected to fill the office, purchase five more shares of stock. He now owns eight shares. The communication was filed. Mr. McFadden moved that the salary of Superintendent be placed at $80 per month. Seconded by Mr. Benchley and carried without opposition. The salaries of zanjeros were then, upon motion of Mr. McFadden, seconded by Mr. Browning, placed at $65 per month, the usual raise of $15 per month during June, July and August to be withheld, and an assistant employed during these months. The salary of the Secretary was permitted to remain at $65 and that of the Treasurer at $10 per month. Supt. Sheppard at this time putting in an application for reappointment as DECIDUOUS FRUITS. N.Rafferty was appointed a committee to confer with the Chamber of Commerce and see if arrangements could be made to have a meeting at Santa Ana. —A Los Angeles paper says: "Santa Barbara has a high-hat ordinance, and hereafter when a man goes to the theater in the zenith city by the great salt sea, he will be able to look upon something besides a straw stack, a conservatory, or a miniature ostrich farm. We manage to get along very well in Los Angeles without such a law, because all the young and pretty women take off their hats at the show, and as all our women are both young and pretty, it is only the occasional homely jay girl who blows in from the 'roofal deestricks,' and shows her bad taste and worse breeding in blocking a view of the stage by the suffering human being who sits behind her." Anaheim has no high-hat ordinance, but all the pretty girls take off their hats when attending the performance. High-hat ordinances are for such jay towns as Santa Ana, but the Anaheim girls are too well brought up to necessitate the interposition of legal measures to instruct them in correct deportment and good manners. Si senor! —The following summary of the weather during the week has been issued by the weather bureau, having headquarters in San Francisco: The long-continued dry spell has been broken this week by general rains of moderate intensity. Farmers are relieved of their anxiety and reports are generally favorable. Showers occurred in the northwestern portion of the State at the beginning of the week but were insufficient in amount and limited in area. Saturday night, Sunday and Monday morning rain fell generally in the State; except in the extreme southern portion of the State, the rain fall was heavy. For the week, the rainfall exceeds the normal by more than one inch in the upper portion of the Sacramento valley, decreasing southward. In the San Joaquin valley the rainfall is also above the normal. The temperature has been generally above the normal, and with the rain should make excellent growing weather. In the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys the weather has been five to seven degrees warmer than the average for this time of the year. Hay and grain will be greatly benefited by the rain. Stock has suffered, however, and many young lambs have died. Fruit buds have been held back but have not suffered, being benefited rather than otherwise. Indications are favorable for heavy blossoming on fruit trees. Heinigkeiten. Sk W. R. Harker if he saw the trial. Counterfeit half dollars are said to circulate.
