LAND TITLES ATTACKED. A Real Estate Transfer of More Than Passing Interest—Santa Ana Property Involved. A deed was filed for record at Santa Ana last Wednesday that is of more than passing interest, inasmuch as it affects the validity of about five hundred lots in the northeastern portion of that town. D. W. Lewis of the Abstract and Title Guaranty company is made the grantee of the deed, which conveys to him all the right, title and interest of Marie Yorba de Burruel in the Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, including especially all her interest as one of the heirs of Teodocio Yorba, deceased, giving and granting to said Lewis all rights to receive such portions as would otherwise be set apart to the said Maria Yorba de Burruel in the distribution of the estate, in case 225 of the Probate Court of Los Angeles county, now pending in that court. The consideration is given as 81 and other valuable considerations. The case dates back to 1863, that being the year in which Teodocio Yorba died. The court records show that it was left open, but it seems to have out no figure in the purchase and sale of the land. The territory embraces 106 25-100 acres within the city of Santa Ana. Mr. Lewis stated to a Santa Ana correspondent that he purchased Mrs. Burruel's interest in the old Yorba estate with the intention of having the title to the land definitely determined by the courts. Those of the property owners of the disputed district who hold certificates issued by reliable title companies, will be saved the trouble and expense of litigation. The Orange County Title company has issued about fifty certificates to land in that section, and C. E. Parker, the president of the corporation, states that it will stand behind its certificates. Mrs. Burruel is a daughter of Teodocio Yorba, and the wife of Desiderio Burruel. Through her sister, Isabel Yorba, she has a claim to 600 or 800 acres near Olive. This property has also been transferred to Lewis. Mr. C. M. Dixon, a well-known merchant of Pleasant Ridge, Fulton Co., Pa., has a little girl who is frequently threatened with croup, but when the first symptoms appear, his wife gives her Chamberlain's Cough remedy, which always affords prompt relief. In 1875 he was married to Natalie Kechko, the daughter of a Russian officer, who was possessed of a large income. He squandered her money upon his favorites, and Milan and former Queen Natalie were divorced in 1888. The following year he granted his people a most democratic constitution, reducing the power of a monarch to that of President of a republic, and two months later he abdicated in favor of his son, Alexander, whom he committed to the care of a regenoy. For twelve years the attractive little Columbia pad calendar has been gaining in fame and prestige, yet the thirteenth edition which has just been issued seems to have outdone its twelve predecessors and formed itself by an unequalled combination of good things. The public has become accustomed to the annual advent of the Columbia Calendar and its appearance is always looked forward to and greeted with interest and pleasure. The arrangement of the 1898 calendar is altogether unique, convenient and helpful. Plenty of space is allowed for memoranda which can be used from day to day in the form of a journal and preserved as a record if one desires. The arrangement of dates is such that they can be referred to in a moment and the moon's phases are indicated for the benefit of cyclers who wish to keep posted on the best time for night riding. The pages throughout are scattered with bright thoughts, witty and entertaining squibs and verses from the pena of Columbia riders who have found inspiration from Columbia rides and sent their thoughts in to brighten the Calendar's pages, also attractive pen and ink sketches everywhere. Among the topics are bicycling, good roads and outdoor life in general, and as to its usefulness we quote from one of its contributors: "Tis the best and most helpful aid one can have in his work; it reminds him of things past, present and future." The calendar stand is so arranged that it may either stand on the desk at an appropriate angle for reference and writing or hang upon the wall. It will be mailed to any address by sending five 2-cent stamps to the Calendar Department of the Pope Manufacturing Company, at Hartford, Conn. Don't be persuaded into buying liniments without reputation or merit—Chamberlain's Pain Balm costs no more, and its merits have been proven by a test of many years. Such letters as the following, from L. G. Bagley, Hueleme, Cal., are constantly being received: "The best remedy for pain I have ever used is Chamberlain's Pain Balm, and I say so after having used it in my family for several years." It cures rheumatism, lame back, sprains and swellings. For sale by Derge, dec. Pates De Fole Gras. The famous French delicacy, pate de fole gras, is a dish made from the enlarged livers of overfed geese, and is much relished by epicures. But everybody does not know how and with what cruelty the enlargement of these livers is produced. The "pates" come, for the most part, from Strasbourg, and as a result in all the country round about Strasbourg geese are raised by tens of thousands. Every farmer has many masses and some have many hundred people. The following year he granted his people a most democratic constitution, reducing the power of a monarch to that of President of a republic, and two months later he abdicated in favor of his son, Alexander, whom he committed to the care of a regency. Three years later the youthful monarch, who was not yet 17, forced the regents to resign and declared himself king. Since then he has completely abolished the constitution and most of the laws by means of simple ukases. The palace of Belgrade under King Milan was notorious. Upon one occasion he imported a whole troop of burlesquers to the palace and entertained them for a long period, and upon another occasion he is alleged to have similarly entertained the chorus of Vienna opera company. His wife, Queen Natalie, had put up with a great deal, but the advent of the Vienna chorus girls was more than even this long suffering woman could endure, and she caused so much trouble that his majesty eventually caused her to be expelled from Servia, which action upon his part had a great deal to do with the bringing about of his own forced abdication. He promptly proceeded to Paris, Nice and London, where he passed his time of reckless living. In Paris he was expelled from a club for cheating at cards and he made himself more notorious by lavishing his money upon a dancer. But when Milan's money was gone his course of dissipation recelved a check, and in his efforts to raise further funds he threatened to return to Servia. The mere suggestion raised such a storm at Belgrade that King Alexander was compelled to raise a sum of money sufficient to induce his father to stay away from Servia. When he inherited the fortune of the late Baron Baich it was intimated that the former king would surely enter upon another period of extravagance, but he seems to have decided to return to the politics of Servia instead. Since Alexander's ascendancy to the throne he has been searching Europe for a wife, but he has not yet married. Last year it was reported that he would wed an American. King Alexander and his father appear to have many tastes in common, for rumor has it that the son shared the father's gay life in Paris. How's This? But everybody does not know how and with what cruelty the enlargement of these livers is produced. The "pates" come, for the most part, from Strasbourg, and as a result in all the country round about Strasbourg geese are raised by tens of thousands. Every farmer has many geese and some have many hundred. The normal livers contain a little less than four per cent of fat. The liver, artificially prepared by steadily dissecting it, contains over 50 per cent of fat. To bring this condition of affairs about, the peasants, late in the autumn of every year, get together all the geese they can spare for the liver market; if they have plenty of room and a dark cellar they put these geese in little cages in the dark cellar. If not, they put out their eyes and nail their feet to the floors of the living rooms of their cottages. The geese are usually nailed in a long row in front of the open fire, so near that they suffer intensely from the heat. For six long months these geese stand or squat in the same place before the fire. Three times a day their mouths are forced open and large balls of cornmeal are stuffed and rammed down their throats until each goose is full clear up to the bill. The livers thus enlarged sell for six or eight francs each and the carcasses for five or six francs more. BUFFO KINGS OF SERVIA. Career of the Profligate Ex-King Milan and His Son Alexander. Since the beginning of former King Milan's regime in Servia, in 1868, when he succeeded his uncle, Prince Michael, of the Obrenovitch line, who was murdered, the country has been ruled in a manner very suggestive to opera bouffe. Previous to that success, which really marked an epoch in the history of a semi-barbarous nation, kings were permitted to rule much as they saw fit, and previous to the rule of Milan Servia was scarcely known as a part of civilized Europe. Milan is known as the most profligate of all the European royalties, and he has been classed as the greatest spendthrift in Europe. He is said to have owed 10,000,000 francs when he was com- VOICE OF THE PRESS. INTERESTING RUMOR FROM ORANGE. From the News. The Irvine company of West Virginia, completed another survey on the 31st ult., and as usual on such occasions, added a few more acres to the territory of the big ranch. This survey took a nice little slice off J. E. Pleasant's orchard, cut through the two Julian homesteads, made Frank Carpenter's holding considerably less and left D. C. Pixley about one-half of his bee ranch. We understand that the Irvines will for the present allow the bee-keepers on the properties enclosed in the new survey to keep bees on the payment of fifty cents a hive. This new survey is probably made to recoup the Irvine company for the loss of the picnic grounds of 160 acres laterly deeded to the county. The San Joaquin ranch boundaries are the most elastic of any property in the country. All that is necessary, it appears, when the company feels an inclination to increase its territory is for the manager to employ a surveyor, run a new line and take in the coveted land. It is intimated, however, that there is a deeper scheme than the acquiring of more land behind this survey, and that is to extend the boundaries higher up on the Santa Ana river, tap the water supply now being distributed by the S. A. V. I. and A. U. W. companies, above the division gate, and from thence convey it unto the San Joaquin ranch. It is said that a survey for this work was made three years ago, when it was found that the securing of a few feet more fall would make the scheme feasible, and this the new survey will give. Oliver Prevost alias Cauthier, serving a sentence of seven years for stealing at Renfrew, Canada, made a terrible confession at Pembroke, Ont. Prevost some time ago left his wife and went off with a Mrs. Cauthier from Quebec, assuming Cauthier's name. They went to Ontario, and started hotel keeping. Two men named Rene Dobin, and Fred Corriere lived in a shanty nearby. The men called on Prevost Feb. 10th last, and remained for supper. The woman and Cauthier put poison in tea for the men. Both men left the table before the meal was finished; one dropped dead in the house, the other died immediately on reaching the door. Prevost and the woman took what money and valuables they could find on the men and removed the bodies to the shanty. They then set fire to the shanty and the bodies were incinerated. The negro has undoubtedly a very strong inclination to sleep in the day and to spend the night in gossip, dancing or singing. On this account he is often a nuisance to his neighbors, especially when he has a wake. As his home is often nothing more than a single room about eight feet square, the funeral party is conducted in the open yard. Here congregate 50 to 100 people, who begin the entertainment with hymns, going on after midnight to songs and games and often winding up toward morning with a free fight. Then there is the cumfoo dance, one of the finest institutions in the world for producing nightmare. Two men beat drums with the hands, the one instrument producing a tumtum and the other a rattle rattle, almost without intermission during the whole night. At intervals of about a minute the party utters a weird cry in some African language which startles you as you lie in bed vainly trying to sleep. As hour after hour passes your house appears to vibrate, the bed shakes and your spine feels as if made up of loose segments. How can the drummers keep this up for ten hours? And the dancers? With the latter exhension alternates with the renewal of the energy; one set falls down and another takes its place. This and other dances are connected with obeah, the witch entices of the African. Read the story of a Colorado woman as told to our reporter: "Eight years ago," said she, "my husband died, and I was left with three children to care for and educate. About two years ago I was very sick with blood poisoning, caused by an abscess that had not received proper treatment. The disease for a time settled in my throat, causing me intense agony. Then inflammatory rheumatism set in. For four months and a half I was a prisoner in my room, most of the time confined to my bed. My hands were swollen so that I could not feed myself, and the swelling in my feet and ankles would have made walking impossible if I had been strong enough. "One day, after considerable treatment, my physician brought me a box of pills. "You need a tonic," he said, "and something that will act at once, and this is the best medicine I know of for that purpose." "Pills," I exclaimed in surprise as he opened the box and showed me the little pink globes. "These are Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People." "Yes," he replied, "but you need not be alarmed, they are not physic, and my word for it, they'll do you good." Before I had been taking them a week I noticed a great improvement in my condition. Soon my rheumatism was gone, I grew stronger each day and now am in the best of health. The lady was Mrs. L. E. Browning, of 1154 East 4th St., Pueblo, Colorado. Southern Pacific Local Time Table. Then he kicked over an Alp, waded through the bay of Naples, fell into the thunder and only stopped in his mad flight to remark to the manager that an actor with a reputation must decline to play on that stage, as there were flies on it.—Pearson's Weekly. Why He Wanted an Autograph. Recently a young man wrote to William Dean Howells for his autograph. The novelist replied in a typewritten line: "Have you bought my last book?" The young man answered: "I have not. I want to sell your autograph in order to get money enough to buy it."—Atlanta Constitution. Sir Christopher Wren, the architect of St. Paul's cathedral, London, was buried in that majestic pile, and the visitor is enlightened by his epitaph, thus, "Si monumentum queris, circumspice" (If you ask for his monument, look round). Three good washes are received by an Abyssinian during his career—at his birth, on his marriage morn and at his death. At all other times he shuns soap and water. RHEUMATISM Is caused by Uric Acid and other impurities lingering in the blood, which have not been filtered out by the Kidneys through the urine. The seat of the trouble is not in the skin or muscles. It's sick Kidneys. Electricity, liniments or plasters will not reach the case. But the disease can be CURED "I have been troubled with rheumatism for several years. Have been treated by physicians and used a great many remedies with but little relief. I was induced by your advertisement to try a box of Dr. Hobbs Sparagus kidney pills and before they were all gone I experienced great relief. I have since used three boxes and can safely say that I am completely cured. I can eat and sleep well, and walk and work as though I was never troubled by rheumatism, and I owe it all to your skidney pills." John J. Smith, 9 N. Oliver St., Los Angeles, Cal. "Darling," he said, looking down tenderly into the eyes of his bride, "I have often heard you say that there is no true love without self sacrifice. You have taught me this great truth, and now I am going to prove my love by giving up something that has been very dear to me for years. You know how fond I am of smoking. Well, dearest, I am going to abandon the practice, even though it be like tearing out my—my"— At this point his emotion apparently overcame him, and he looked down at the sweet face, expecting to see there appreciation of his noble resolve, but he saw only a look of blank disappointment. "What is the matter? Are you not glad that I am following your teaching?" he asked. "It's not that," she answered, almost sobbing. "Never mind what it is." And she rushed from the room. The self sacrificing hero smiled. He had learned from his wife's dearest friend that she had set her heart on buying him half a dozen boxes of cigars covered with lovely silver paper wrappers, with pictures in the middle. And that is what gave birth to his noble resolution. — Pearson's Weekly. Electric Protection of Safes. The latest idea for the protection of money and valuables is to have the safe which contains them secured inside a cabinet. Where the safe is kept in a vault the vault serves the purposes of a cabinet. In either case an electric lining is used, consisting of strips of metal mounted in connection with thin metal sheets so arranged that even a pin thrust through the cabinet and penetrating the lining will sound the alarm. The door of the vault cannot be opened, nor can the curtain of the cabinet be raised, until a time lock has disconnected it from the alarm system. In order that the alarm box may be proof against molestation it is made of steel and placed within a hood lined in the same way as the cabinet. Any attempt at tampering will cause an alarm to be sounded, as in the case of the cabinet. The door is held closed by heavy lag bolts, the partial removal of any of which will give a warning signal. There are several of these lag bolts, and before the door can be opened they have all to be removed, which requires a considerable length of time. PACIFIC COAST STEAMSHIP CO.
