THE NEWS OF THE WEEK. Board of Audit Report Favorably on the Petitions. Find a Sufficient Number of Shares Subscribed to Justify the Vote on Enlarging the District—Tim Carroll Serves Papers on the Alamitos Factory Warning Them That he Will Hold Them Responsible for Infringement of His Patented Beet Dump—Charley Landell Rides Gen. Last's Caballo—Round-About Voyage of Mr. Marker's Postal Card—Commencement Exercises. The Board of Audit on Monday revised the eleven lists on file at the office of the Secretary of the water company, petitioning for the enlargement of the irrigation district. Their report is as follows: ANAHEIM, Cal., June 13, 1897. In accordance with the resolution of the Board of Directors, the Board of Audit have examined the eleven petitions presented favoring the enlargement of the district, and find the following results: Regular signatures of stockholders made by themselves or representatives as per the company's books, 4595. Two irregular signatures in which the intention is clearly correct, as follows: Stock owned by J. H. W. Patterson, signature by F. J. Patterson, 30 shares. Stock in name of Savings Bank of Southern California, trustee; signed by M. S. Taylor, for whom the bank is trustee, 10 shares. Total signatures after all duplicates are cast out, 4635. Total shares of stock outstanding 6,-886, of which a two-thirds majority is 4590 2-3 shares. This board therefore reports that the petitions are signed by more than the necessary two-thirds of the stockholders or their representatives. We have made a complete list of the stockholders who have signed the petitions, and set the stock to which they were entitled to vote opposite their names, and have filed same with the Secretary, and it can be seen by those desiring to examine it. NEWMAN ESSICK, C. O. RUST, C. E. HOLOCOMB. Despite this report it is given out that the "reform league" of Fullerton will contest the legality of the act increasing the boundaries, and will carry the matter into the courts. E. E. Keech of Santa Ana is said to have been retained to appear for the "reform league" against the company. H. M. S. “PINAFORE.” A Crowded House Assembles to Witness the Performance of the Old Favorite. A crowded audience assembled at the Opera-house on Saturday evening to witness the rendition of "Pinafore" by local talent. The performance was under the direction of Impressario Crowcher, and was eminently successful in every respect. The cast was as follows: Sir Joseph Porter, K. C. B., First Lord of the Admiralty... Jack Rogers. Captain Corocran, Commanding H. M. S. Pinafore... C. S. Rogers Raiph Rackstraw, Able Seaman... James Forbes Dick Desdeye, Able Seaman... Frank S. Purdy Bill Bobstay, Boatswain... Orville Lochman Bob Becket, Boatswain's Mate... Victor Schumacher Silent Marine... Fred Betts Josephine, Captain's Daughter... Mrs. C. S. Rogers Hebe, Sir Joseph's First Cousin... Miss Lillian Robinson Little Buttercup, A Portsmouth Bomboat Woman... Miss Catherine Bradford First Lord's Sisters, his Cousins, his Aunts, Sailors, etc. The honors of the evening were carried off by Josephine (Mrs. Rogers) who sang the part with more than her usual sweetness and melody. Miss Bradford made a captivating Buttercup, and Miss Lillian Robinson sang sweetly as Hebe. James Forbes sang the difficult part of Ralph with good effect, although he was unfortunately suffering with a cold. Charley Rogers made a good captain and sang the part well. Jack Rogers as the admiral had rather a comic conception of the part. Frank Purdy as Deadeye was one of the best sustained parts, while Fred Betts provoked great laughter as the Silent Marine. The choruses were admirable, and altogether the performance reflected credit upon those taking part in it. After the performance calls were made for Impressario Crowther, who rose and bowed his acknowledgements, too much overcome by the applause that greeted him to make any extended speech. He is entitled to great praise for the excellence of his work, and words of praise must be bestowed upon all participating in the performance. The Impressario may be persuaded to undertake to produce "Patience" during the winter. SUPERVISOR BOARD. County Road Hence to Santa Ana to be Graveled at a Cost of $700. The Board of Supervisors met in regular session at Santa Ana on Monday morning. County Surveyor Kellogg presented his report on the Freeman ditch as directed by the board. The report was ordered filed. The deeds for the right of way in Debtors' Court are shown here. Painter Middleham has decorated the postoffice with a new coat of blue paint. Jos. Hatfield makes quite a display of Fourth of July goods in the window of his establishment. The streets are again being torn up with excavations at frequent intervals to admit of the putting in of the service connections. Tuesday evening the moon was full. The lunar orbit rises well over toward the southeast. We are approaching the summer solstice. The evenings are ideally perfect. The graduates of the public school enjoyed a 'bus ride to Long Beach yesterday. H. C. Gade was appointed to handle the ribbons, and the young people started out to have an enjoyable trip to the sea shore. There was a young farmer of Clair Who said to himself, "I declare, Such things that I hear Of the San Diego beer. That forthwith for a jag I'll prepare." George Betts has brought suit against the Southern California Fruit Exchange to recover $1451 damages sustained by violation of a contract, wherein the Exchange purchased a car load of lemons from him and then refused to accept them. Hast seen the subscription list for the purchase of instruments for the band, and affixed thy signature there-to? The list is a beauty, and yesterday $50 had been subscribed, in $5 lots, with a $10 starter by a well-known firm. The band boys held a meeting at the City Hall on Friday evening, and selected Carl Schindler to be their leader. Carl is a good musician and promises to develop the band into one of the best musical organizations in the county. Rumors are current among the knowing ones that Madame Modjeska may prevailed upon to give an entertainment in this city before departing for East. Should she conclude to do so, no doubt a crowded house would be gathered to greet her. Let us have the show! The annual meeting of the Fullerton Walnut Growers' Association was held last week, when the following Board of Directors were elected: H. G. Wilshire, Sydmer Ross, B. F. Porter, S. F. Daniels and A. T. Pendleton. The new Board will meet on Saturday to elect officers. stockholders who have signed the petitions, and set the stock to which they were entitled to vote opposite their names, and have filed same with the Secretary, and it can be seen by those desiring to examine it. NEWMAN ESSICK, C. O. RUST, C. E. HOLCOMB. Despite this report it is given out that the "reform league" of Fullerton will contest the legality of the act increasing the boundaries, and will carry the matter into the courts. E. E. Keech of Santa Ana is said to have been retained to appear for the "reform league" against the company. CLAIR ITEMS. J. Barter last week to make his permanent home in Los Angeles. The old gentleman's genial manners will be much missed in Clair, and it is to be hoped that the hot days of the summer may induce him to return to his old haunts. The farmers in the neighborhood have adopted the Carroll dumping apparatus at the sliding at Benedict, but the Los Alamitos factory people in order to save a few dollars are inventing a dump of their own, which when finished will bear so close a resemblance to the Carroll dump that Tim is likely to line his purse with a nice sum in the shape of damages for infringement on his patent. You can't get away wid Tim; catch a weasel sleep! The co-operative creamery in Westminster is forging ahead rapidly. The Bolsa skimming station in connection with it will open for work within a week, and such is the confidence of the Bolsa people in the new enterprise that they have subscribed for $3000 worth of stock in the creamy. The co-operative creamery is under splendid management, and as only practical dairymen are admitted as stockholders it goes without saying that the farmers have implicit confidence in its honesty and efficiency. The Los Alamitos factory will open up for work on the 8th of July. Beet tapping will begin about the 3d and is likely to last till October. The co-operative creamery has established a new milk route which takes in Clair and portions of Magnolia. It is many years since the potato crop reached the yield in quantity and quality that characterize it this season. If this branch of agriculture goes on in Clair as it is going we will soon need the loan of Tim Carroll's dump to help us out. We could compensate Tim in spuds. Among the best and most promising beet fields in the country are those of W. H. Kennedy and others, containing over 50 acres and lying close to the Magnolia school. BUENA PARK. Miss Elsie Douer of Los Angeles is visiting at Dr. Calder's on Canadian Avenue. Children's day was observed at the Congregational church last Sunday by a very beautiful exercise entitled "The Child in the Church." The floral decorations were all of green and white. They were under the direction of Mrs. R. A. Sailor and were very artistic. Rev. H. P. Case made an interesting address, giving an account of his work as Sunday School Superintendent of Southern California. The L. M. A. S. gave a very enjoyable ice-cream festival in the warehouse Friday evening. The warehouse was decorated with palms and cypress. The cream was made from the new pro- SUPERVISOR BOARD. County Road Hence to Santa Ana to be Graveled at a Cost of $700. The Board of Supervisors met in regular session at Santa Ana on Monday morning. County Surveyor Kellogg presented his report on the Freeman ditch as directed by the board. The report was ordered filed. The deeds for the right of way in Delhi district were accepted and ordered recorded. The District Attorney was instructed to collect delinquent license from C. B. Huggans and O. Jensen of Fullerton. Applications for saloon license were received from Samuel Hess of Santa Ana and Dolores Garcia of Capistrano: granted. Applications for relief from Mrs. S. A. Detherow of Newhope and John Mylerleitner of Anaheim were referred to Supervisor Smith. The new bridge at Newport across the Santa Ana River was accepted, and the demand of Arthur & Sawyer for $1304 for building it, allowed. The clerk was instructed to advertise that the board would sit as a Board of Equalization commencing July 6 at 1:30 p.m. The clerk was also instructed to advertise for stationary for the ensuing year, bids to be opened on Tuesday, July 6, at 10 a.m. The communication for J. C. Joplin relative to appointing a county veterinary, heretofore laid on the table, was taken up. Dr. Lord and Mr. Joplin appeared before the board in reference to it. After discussion the matter was continued to the first meeting in August. Tomas Ruiz, a half-orphan living near Tustin, was allowed $6.25 per month, and Manuel Encinas $8. Mrs. Refugio Feliz and Mrs. Josefa Rios of Yorba were allowed $8 each. Jose M. García and Jose Rios were removed from the indigent roll. Supervisor Potter was authorized to grave the county road between Santa Ana and Anaheim, not more than $700 to be expended on the work. A large crowd gathered at Chadbourne's Hall at Fullerton on Friday evening last to attend the commencement exercises of the high school. The exercises were entertaining throughout, and reflected credit upon the teachers and pupils. The program was as follows: Violin solo, "Concerto" (Op. 76 First Movement) Chhéderon de Berlert. E. E. Young Invocation. Rev. J. T. Hopkins Oration, "Joan of Arc" Virginia Nicolas Vocal Solo, "O Happy Day" (Goetzze) Mrs. A. Werner Rupprecht Oration, "An Education the Best Instrument" Carrie Porter Oration, "The Conquest of Tenochititan" Ada Montgomery Piano Solo, "Second Valve (B Godard)" Clara Young Oration, "Reformers as Heroes" May Heasil Oration, "Daniel Webster" Dewitt Montgomery Piano Solo (Selected) Mrs. A.Werger Rupprecht Presentation of Diplomas. Wm Sharbuck Violin Solo, "Les Adieux" (Golterman). E. E. Young Benediction. Rev. J. T. Hopkins While the team attached to Conrad's brewery wagon was standing in front of Fritz Ruhman's yesterday they became unmanageable and started to run away. At Federman's corner they turned toward the east, and in front of the postoffice the vehicle was overturned, precipitating several kegs of beer and cakes of ice to the ground. The Impressario may be persuaded to undertake to produce "Patience" during the winter. Rumors are current among the knowing ones that Madame Modjeska may be prevailed upon to give an entertainment in this city before departing for the East. The annual meeting of the Fullerton Walnut Growers' Association was held last week, when the following Board of Directors were elected: H. G. Wilshire, Sydmer Ross, B.F.Porter, S.F.Daniels and A.T.Pendleton. The new Board will meet on Saturday to elect officers. Paul Poetsch has our thanks for a donation of magnificent strawberries. The berries are overly large in size, suffused with a deep red color and absolutely delicious in flavor. Paul raises fine strawberries, and is making money at the business. The new water mains were tested Saturday, when a leak was found at the corner of Hank Stough's blacksmith shop, which was caused by the failure of the pipe layers to close up the aperture at the "T" leading to Hermine street. The water was turned out of the mains after the test, and the service connections are now being put in. Roman Wisser now regales his customers with the new San Diego beer, and informs us his daily sales of the beverage have doubled during the week. Wisser conducts an orderly and well-appointed place, and his stock in trade is always best. He believes live and let live, and is not afraid of having a saloon opened on each side of him selling two schooons for a nickel. While the families of Mr. Wilcox and Mr.East were attending The Methodist church on Sunday morning their homes on the east side were entered by thieves who helped themselves to a plentiful Sunday dinner, that had been carefully prepared and awaited the return of the household. The burglars ransacked both houses, and stole $2.50 from Mr.East's residence. The Supervisors have selected Tuesday, July 6th, at 10 o'clock A.M., as time for hearing the petition of R.E.Larter and others for the abandonment of the road in Westminster road district leading to the Landing, and placing it in lieu thereof on the section line between sections 5 and 6. The official advertisement, bearing the signature of County Clerk Brock, will be found upon the second page. The program for the Modjeska entertainment at Santa Ana to-morrow evening is published, and Chas.Rogers and Herman Dickel are given prominent characters in the cast. Miss Mabel Langenberger will play a selection from Chopin, Senora Gallardo will sing, and Miss Marie Rimpau will be accompanied. Several bus loads will probably go over from here. Tim Carroll has served notice on E.F.Dyer, the Clarks and other owners of the Alamitos sugar factory, as well as a large number of farmers of that section, that he will hold them responsible for any damages he may sustain by infringement upon his patent beet dump. The Alamitos factory have erected some twenty-six dumps at the factory bins, and Tim claims these infringe upon his patent. He may bring injunction proceedings putting an stopper on their use. Case made an interesting address, giving an account of his work as Sunday School Superintendent of Southern California. The L. M. A. S. gave a very enjoyable ice-cream festival in the warehouse Friday evening. The warehouse was decorated with palms and cypress. The cream was made from the new process of cream from the Pacific Creamery. It was very excellent. The society will meet with Mrs. Jas. A. Whitaker on Friday afternoon. They also contemplate a series of lectures in the near future by some very fine lecturers. The Centralia school exercises will be given in the warehouse on Saturday evening. Two will graduate. The warehouse will seat a great many and very comfortably. The new piano of the Fraternal Aid Society will be used on this occasion. Messrs. Jas. A. and A. W. Whitaker received the sad intelligence of the death of their elder brother at Laporte, Indiana, who died on the 15th of June, after a lingering illness. Friday evening will be the third social hop of the Fraternal Aid. A large crowd is anticipated. A number of our citizens are to attend the Queen's Jubilee ball at Los Angeles. Mr. Day was quite seriously hurt by a runaway, which occurred last week. Miss Margaret Bowen has been teaching daily since the accident at Dr. Calder's. Her arm is doing well. The Y. P. S. C. E. which meets every Sunday evening at 7:30 is having unusually large attendance. Last Sunday evening's meeting was most excellently led by Mrs. Haigh on the interesting topic, "How to study the Bible." Mr. Harry Andrews from Maine has been visiting his aunt, Mrs. James Whitaker. He is editor of the Lewiston Journal. He contemplates making Southern California his future home. The Pacific Creamery is receiving large orders for both sweetened and unsweetened cream. The dairy men are putting in more cows as the increase of milk received shows. Most of the milk stands a good test, proving that this is an excellent dairying country. For Sale. 300 good fruit trays, of pine and redwood. Inquire of I. N. Everett or G. E. Pickett, E. Center St. Anaheim, je10-2t While the team attached to Conrad's brewery wagon was standing in front of Fritz Ruhman's yesterday they became unmanageable and started to run away. At Federman's corner they turned toward the east, and in front of the postoffice the vehicle was overturned, precipitating several kegs of beer and cakes of ice to the ground. Fritz Grunemay, the driver, was hurlled a distance of twenty feet, but sustained no serious injuries other than a severe shaking up. The wagon was damaged somewhat by the overturning, and the horses, which freed themselves from the vehicle, turned and ran toward Los Angeles street, going as far as Broadway, where they were caught by Charley Bauer. Dyer, the Clarks and other owners of the Alamitos sugar factory, as well as a large number of farmers of that section, that he will hold them responsible for any damages he may sustain by infringement upon his patent beet dump. The Alamitos factory have erected some twenty-six dumps at the factory bins, and Tim claims these infringements upon his patent. He may bring injunction proceedings putting an stoppell on their use. The divorce case of Clara B. Williamson vs. John D. Williamson has occupied considerable attention of the Superior Court in the past, and the case is liable to come up again for rehearing. The plaintiff was granted a decree of divorce some time ago on grounds of cruelty and desertion. The defendant now asks to have this judgment set aside, alleging as a reason therefor that he was not notified of the action in court. Mr. Hache has sent out notices to beet raisers requesting the usual information as to the number of tons of beets each grower will be able to deliver per day and asking other information concerning the approaching harvest. All beets delivered at other points than at Anaheim, Buena Park and Benedict will have to be shipped in carload lots to Chino, where they will be weighed, tared and tested. Each farmer shipping from outside points is expected to send at least one car of twelve tons each day. A Schneider went to Los Angeles on Thursday to attend the funeral of Raymond Wetzel, the eighteen-year-old son of Martin Wetzel, who was accidentally killed at the Southern Pacific work shops in that city on the preceding day. Martin Wetzel was for many years an engineer in the employ of the Southern Pacific company, and ran the first passenger train over that road to Anaheim, 25 years ago. He is still well remembered hereabout, where his friends are legion. Martin has had bad luck with his children, and three years ago lost a boy of about 18 while the lad was out hunting squirrels, the youth being accidentally shot by the premature discharge of the weapon. This second shocking death in the family is a great affliction to the grief-stricken parents, who have warm condolence of a vast number of friends in their loss. For a number of years past Martin has been engaged as engineer on the electric cars running between Pasadena and Los Angeles. On your erotic Thursdays with Edith Merger pearl mornings. C. H. Nickerson has been chosen to act as inspector of the election and S. Littlefield and F. C. Smythe will act as judges. The cement caisson at the city well pit descended five feet on Tuesday and has yet some little distance to settle before reaching the requird 28-foot level. Yesterday the force of excavators were kept busy throwing out the earth from the pit, and the caisson was steadily settling. The lower shift of men were at work in water a good part of the time, but the water is kept pumped out pretty well, and good progress is being made. The graduating exercises of Centralia school district will be held at the large warehouse at Buena Park on Saturday evening, for the reason that the school house is not large enough to contain its many patrons. The essays of the two graduates, Miss Claudina Webber and Miss Myrtle Brewer, will be delivered in the intervals of a finely prepared musical program, in which will appear Mrs. Dr. Vans Agnew as soprano; Miss Maxon, violinist, and Miss Jennie Johnson at the piano. Rev. Dr. Weller of Los Angeles will make the address in awarding the diplomas. It is reported that the Santa Fe company will construct a steel bridge over the Santa Ana river this summer, and the road bed heightened three or four feet in that vicinity. The company is putting in about two thousand new ties and otherwise improving the road bed. It has constructed a number of substantial steel bridges on its line within the year and reports are current to the effect that a similar structure will span the Santa Ana river before the winter rains come again. Modjeska opens the new opera-house in Santa Ana to-morrow evening, the play being "Mary Stuart." The announcement is sufficient to fill the house to overflowing. This will be the first appearance of Modjeska since her recent serious illness, and as it may be the last appearance of the gifted actress, the occasion should call out a crowded audience, the more so because the proceeds are to be given to charity. Madame Modjeska will be assisted by a company of local talent, including Miss Mabel Langenberger, Mr. Dickel and Mr. Rogers of this city, and rehearsals demonstrated that altogether. PERSONAL MENTION Judge Marquez, the well-known resident of Yorba, was in town on Monday on a brief visit. Hon. H. W. Chynoweth transacted business in the Los Angeles Superior Court yesterday. Burdette Chandler and a number of others have filed a location on 100 acres of oil bearing land in Soquel canyon. Mrs. Hartung and Miss Deimas contemplate going to San Diego and Coronado on Saturday's excursion, and will probably return on Monday. Andrew Pfahler paid a visit to the old folks at home, at Capistrano, some days ago, and reports everything well at that point. Horace Green and wife and little boy came over from Long Beach to spend Sunday with relatives and friends in town and were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Witte. Jack Rogers leaves on Saturday for San Francisco and the Sound country, and may go as far north as Victoria. Jack carries the best wishes of a host of friends with him. Tim Boege returned on Thursday from his trip to San Diego. He will open an agency for the new San Diego beer, and will handle that beverage at his well-known resort in the West End. Mrs. Jennie Lane has been attending to the telegraph office at El Monte for a fortnight past, and during her absence Miss Ella Gardiner has been performing the duties of Superintendent of the telegraph here. Mr. Craig yesterday completed the brick work supporting the new water-tube boiler at the power-house, and today the boiler will be ready for the clean-up, preparatory to being turned over to the city. Mrs. Shrode of Duarte, daughter of Mrs. Alex Gardiner of Orangentrope, came down on a short visit to her folks on Saturday, returning to her home the next day. While here she attended the performance of Pinafore with the family on Saturday evening. James Moss was in from Westminster on Tuesday. He brings information that the Westminster butter and cheese company have purchased the skimming station at Buena Park and will move the outfit down toward the Peat. Mrs. Evans, wife of the principal of the West End school, who has been quite critically ill with inflammation of the stomach, was yesterday reported to be improved and she will doubtless soon be on the way to complete recovery. Frank Ward came down from Los Angeles on Tuesday to see how the cement caisson at the well pit was getting along. He found the 110 tons of cement slowly sinking, and says some men are lucky to be alive. Ramon Agullar and bride, after spending a few days with friends in town, departed for their home in Antelope Valley on Saturday afternoon. The young folks tendered them a social hop in the Opera-house on Friday evening. K. A. R. Keener has determined to sever his connection with the postoffice and will go to farming again. He may make a trip to Arizona in the near future to visit his mining property in the Territory. Charley Landell went up to Los Angeles one day last week and returned riding Brig.-Gen. Last's fancy sorrel horse, which the General rides on State occasions. Charley now rides into town asstride of the nag, which is one of the finest saddle horses in the country. K. Cleaver drove over from Santa Ana on Tuesday in company of his daughter. Mr. Cleaver is an old-time newspaper man, but is temporarily out of the harness and is putting in time viewing the natural delights of the countryside. Mrs. Nebelung and her three children left on Friday last for Portland to visit with relatives, during the summer vacation. During her absence the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein is keeping bachelor's hall, waiting for the time to come for his family to return. Professor Ludwig Thomas will give a grand orchestral concert in Chadbourne's Hall, Fullerton, next Saturday night at 7:30. He will be assisted by Misses Ella and Minnie Chaffee, and Happy Smith, vocalists, and Joseph Goldsmith, solo violinist. Fred Hartung and wife departed some days ago for Berlin, where they will make a prolonged stay. They sail from New York for Bremen July 6th. Fred is one of our solid men and having converted most of his property into gilt-edged bonds, has decided to make a trip to the scenes of his childhood in the Fatherland. He will be absent some years. The exercises on Friday afternoon in the primary and intermediate departments of the city school, presided over by Miss Kerlin and Mrs. Horr, were very creditable and reflect great credit upon the teachers. The children were well trained and spoke their "pieces" well. After the exercises, the visitors were invited to inspect the Kinder-garten work done by the children of the primary grades, which was found to be curiously enjoyable. The current among the that Madame Modjeska and upon to give an enter- city before departing should she conclude to a crowded house would greet her. Sheppard for the short term. Dr. Clark's name appeared upon two tickets, on one as a candidate for the long term, for which he was an aspirant, and on the other for the short term, the latter being without his consent. Amerige's name also appeared upon two tickets, one for the long and the other for the short term. The names of Sheppard and Sherwood were upon the regular Clark ticket as candidates for short term trustee, and Dr. Clark's vote of 26 was divided among both for the short term, Sheppard receiving 16 and Sherwood 12. Amerige received 23 votes for the long term and 12 for the short term. He made the ridiculous claim that he was entitled to add these votes, for the short term, although avowedly a candidate for the long term; and the election board, of which his brother George was a member, made out a certificate of election to him. An appeal was taken to the District Attorney, who has decided that Clark and Sheppard were the successful candidates. —The machinery in the Chino sugar factory will be set in motion, early in July, so that it can be tested before active work begins on the beets, and by the 10th campaign of the year will be begun. The celebration is to be on Saturday, July 3d, and according to advice received from Attorney Head, it will be a corker. There is to be a barbecue, with Don Maro Forster as toastmaster, a fine floral parade, and a musical and literary program. Judge Phillips of Los Angeles will be the orator of the day. There will be all kinds of races, fireworks, dancing and other things that make the Fourth of July a howling success. A general managing committee was appointed, and it has organized the work and appointed subordinate committees and officers. Everybody, including business firms, is invited to participate in the floral parade. On May 27th W.R.Harker wrote a postal card to his old-time friend W.J. Henderson of Chicago who recently visited in this city, and who was sojourning temporarily in Los Angeles at the time, saying that he had written to him some days before, addressing his letter to the Natick House, where he registered, and failing to receive an answer, surmised that he had changed his lodgings, and had decided to try him with a postal addressed to the general delivery. On the postal card Mr.Harker wrote, in the course of the correspondence inviting his friend to come Anaheim, that James A.Davis was living in Anaheim at the age of 86 years, and that if Mr.Henderson came here to live he would attain that age also. The postal failed to reach its destination, although it followed another W.J.Henderson, who had been a guest at the Natick House about the same time Mr.Harker's friend stopped there, to Pittsburg, Pa., and it was returned to its writer in this city on Tuesday. In the same envelope containing it was a letter from Mr.Henderson saying the postal card had tracked him to the Carnegie steel works at Pittsburg, where it reached him on June 10th, but had evidently found the wrong man. He wrote, however, that if he were certain he could live to be 86 years of age by coming to Anaheim he would start hitherward forthwith. Since the postal card was first written, the original Mr.Henderson has paid Anaheim a visit, during which time Harker showed him over the country.
