WOMEN COUNTERFEITERS
EVERY GANG EVER ARRESTED HAD AT LEAST ONE FEMALE MEMBER.
Women have a weakness for counterfeiting. The first person ever executed for that crime was a woman. She was an English woman, named Barbara Spencer, and was put to death in 1721 for making false shillings. She was strangled and burned at the stake. Curiously enough, her accomplices were acquitted.
Nancy Kidd was one of the most remarkable counterfeiters ever known in this country. She belonged to a family of noted forgers. She carried on her nefarious trade for more than thirty years in Chicago, and was arrested there many times. On one of these occasions a lot of fiber paper was found on her person. The Government officials were completely at a loss to know how she had obtained this. Finally she confessed that a chemical solution had been used to wash the faces of the notes perfectly clean. Thus she was in the habit of taking $1 bills and changing them into larger denominations. The Government authorities released her in return for her valuable information and for telling them what the solution was. However, they had her shadowed by detectives, and finally caught her with $17,000 worth of counterfeit money in a box. She was found guilty on seven different indictments for counterfeiting, and was sentenced to eight years in State prison, where she finally died.
One of the cleverest tricks ever played on Uncle Sam was invented by a woman who lived in Philadelphia. Her plan was to take $10 and $20 gold pieces, and with a small drill worked by steam power, to bore out insides and then refill them with some base metal, being careful that they should weigh exactly the right amount when she had finished. This she accomplished by drilling through the milled edge of the coin, and then, after filling the hole, covered it with a little of the extracted gold. In this way she made $7.50 on every eagle and $16 on every double eagle. The officials of the secret service say that this is the safest device ever invented for cheating the Treasury.
Counterfeiting is very apt to run in families. This, of course, is natural, as a father brings up his son or daughter to follow his profession. Women who often would otherwise be good are often led into this crime by marrying men who carry it on as a business. But sometimes it works the other way. Women teach their husbands how to make false money. This is what happened when Ben Boyd married Mary Ackerman of Indiana. Her father was one of the most successful counterfeiters of his day, and his daughter had a thorough acquaintance with the art. Mrs. Boyd carefully taught her husband all the secrets of the trade, and he became one of the most
Woman's work
Is never done, and it is especially wearing and wearisome to those whose blood is impure and unfit properly to tone, sustain, and renew the wasting of nerve, muscle and tissue. It is more because of this condition of the blood that women are run down,
Tired, Weak, Nervous,
Than because of the work itself. Every physician says so, and that the only remedy is in building up by taking a good nerve tonic, blood purifier and vitallizer like Hood's Sarsaparilla. For the troubles peculiar to Women at change of season, climate or life, or resulting from hard work, nervousness, and impure blood, thousands have found relief and cure in Hood's Sarsaparilla.

scorecy, but the watchful Cubans there knew of it and sent word out to a nearby insurgent camp. The track was dynamited as the train came along, the bomb causing great destruction, four cars being blown almost into splinters. The terrified Spanish soldiers poured out of the wreck, only to receive a withering fire from the Cubans concealed behind the roadbed. The Spaniards fought bravely for a few moments, but the odds were too much and they fled in all directions, the Cubans pursuing them for miles. Over forty Spanish soldiers were killed or wounded and forty taken prisoners. The Cubans received a quantity of arms, ammunition and medical supplies. It is reported that the expedition landed safely and that all the cargoes were taken to Gomez's camp.
In Havana much speculation has been indulged in to-day as to why Weyler changed his mind and went to the Pinar del Rio section, instead of going to Matanzas and into Santa Clara provinces, as bad been arranged. The solution is that bad news was received from the Spanish front near the troocha and that the Spanish commanders, not wishing to stand the responsibility, wired to Weyler.
One of the principal reasons of the Spanish Government for insisting upon General Weyler making a decisive attempt to clear the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Havana and Matanzas within a few weeks is the urgent necessity for scoring a military success before Spain has once more to appeal to the native and foreign markets for fresh loans when she shall have exhausted the money
SATISFIED WITH HEART GYPSY LOVER.
STRANGE INFATUATION OF THE PRINCE CHIMAY — COMES OF EDOPING FAMILY.
London, Dec. 26.—Princess de Cara Chimay, the Detroit girl who recelped from Paris with a musician, is adorned with her lover at his home in a reverence village in Hungary, Vienna dispatched yesterday and to day assert, defiantly fitted with him and her position. The sentiment seems absurdly extravagant, but in entire conformity with her course in before she eloped. Prince de Cara Chimay is of French origin. Several annotators performed splendid service in French armies. Miss Clara Ward, as well known, is the daughter of a well-known, is the daughter of a well-known Canadian, who now lives in Detroit.

He anything but an Adonis, being a tall, awkward animal of thirty-five with strong black hair which seems pasted on his head and is sorrupulously parted in the middle. He is pitted with smallpox. He went to Paris five years ago and joined a gypsy band of musicians. His diddling traced the attention of the benevolent Asian Prince Jablonowsky, who advanced him money to start a band of his own.
Princess Chimay, who had already fully risked her reputation in other affairs happened in the restaurant where he playing last winter and conversed with In a day or two there was no secret at concealment on the part of the Princess Rigo's wife was the first to object. Viz scenes resulted and to end them Rigo this proposition to her: "Go back to your father with your father your mother your brother and live at Parks with parents. I will pay your fare and send a thousand francs a month. Then who have made a fortune through the gifts of Princess I will rejoin you and we will quietly on our income."
Mrs. Rigo was easily persuaded, and turned to her native country, but no France a month being forthcoming she turned to Paris, accompanied by her band's mother. Rigo consented to rest his mother, and even introduced her to Princess, who invited her to Junobeon, with his wife he would have nothing to do A tortnight later the poor woman left brokenhearted.
All this happened at the beginning of summer. The pair went to the seaside afterward traveled. They were in August at a hotel on Boulevard Capucino, where one day Rigo gave a quiet to his former colleagues.
"Are you happy madam?" asked on the guests of the hostess."

A CRISIS MUST COME IN TWO MONTHS —ALL REVENUES ARE IN PAWN.
New York, Dec. 27.—A Madrid special says: Spain is bankrupt. It is useless to attempt to disguise the facts. Not only is she unprepared for war with any first class power, but it will be impossible for her to carry on campaigns in Cuba and the Philippines much longer. The cash sheet of the Bank of Spain to-day shows that not more than $19,000,000 remain of the $64,000,000 raised by the domestic war loan.
This balance will all disappear within little more than two months. European banks have refused to furnish money. Capitalists throughout the world know the wealth producing machinery of Cuba has made $7,000 on every eagle and go on on every double eagle. The officials of the secret service say that this is the safest device ever invented for cheating the Treasury.

Her father was one of the most successful counterfeiters of his day, and his daughter had a thorough acquaintance with the art. Mrs. Boyd carefully taught her husband all the secrets of the trade, and he became one of the most famous forgers of the age.
They carried on the business with such a high degree of skill that they were not captured for years, and, when at last secret service Hawkshaws did run them down, not a single counterfeit plate, note or coin was found in their possession. When their house was searched $8,000 in good money was found. This small amount was all the money they had accumulated during all their years of crime. Of course the officers could not touch it. Afterward sufficient evidence was secured to convict them and they were sent to prison. They both claimed to have been converted while in State prison, and after their release settled in Chicago, where they apparently lived an honest life.
A case that annoyed the secret service very much was that of a woman who employed a clever dodge. She went to a large shop and selected a valuable shawl. To pay for this she handed the clerk a United States Treasury note for $1,000. He took the money and disappeared, not returning for several minutes. When he came back she asked him why he had kept her waiting, and he confessed that he had taken the bill to a bank near by to be sure that it was good. She pretended to be very angry and said that she would not buy the shawl on any account, and walked out of the shop. A little later in the day she returned, and said that she could not find any shawl that suited her as well in the other shops, she had decided to take it in spite of the insult offered her. She gave him the $1,000 bill, and getting the shawl and the change, left the shop. The owner of the shop afterward discovered that the note he finally accepted was a counterfeit. The first bill had been good, but on her return she gave him the false one, which was a wonderful imitation. The secret service was much agitated about this and several others of the thousand-dollar bills which turned up, but they have since captured the plates.
Practically every gang of counterfeiters ever arrested has had women associates. In the office of the secret service in Washington there is a large frame, four feet square, filled with the photographs of women who have either made or passed false money. Men almost always employ their wives or daughters for the purpose of "shoving" their counterfeits.

Capitalists throughout the world know the wealth producing machinery of Cuba has been largely destroyed, and the principal source of revenue of Spain's revenue is dried up. Even were peace restored tomorrow it would be impossible to secure capital to re-establish the great Cuban plantations while the Spanish flag remains in that island as a constant and certain incentive to armed revolution.
The situation appals all Spaniards who are not blinded by pride or passion. The nation's funded debt is roughly $1,200,000,000, and the annual interest on this aggregates about $64,000,000, more than one-half of the whole income of Spain. Although in recent years the annual deficit has been greatly reduced, the floating debt is now about $91,000,000.
With two great colonial wars on her hands and a domestic rebellion possible in the near future, Spain's credit in the European markets is gone. It is hard to understand, on any basis of common sense, the haughty and desiant tone of the present Government. It was necessary to pawn the Spanish custom house to the extent of $12,000,000, a year to secure the much boasted domestic war loan.
Taxes in Spain are already so high that it is difficult to conceive how they can be increased sufficient to avert imminent peril of unconcealable bankruptcy. Nothing remains unpawned but the tobacco monopoly, but if that should be hypothetical for war purposes, how could Spain carry on her Government at home?
In a few weeks the crush must come in some form. Spain has guaranteed the cost of the Cuban war with an idea of bleeding the Cubans when she has crushed them, but the Cuban republic grows in power day by day, and already thoughtful men in Madrid begin to see that the death of Maceo is not the substantial victory they at first thought it to be. The banks and business men are groaning over the prospect. Ruin stalks through the land while the little king plays in the palace with his Austrian mother.
CINOINNATI, Dec. 23 — A special from Tampa, Fla., says: One of the Cuban leaders here received news from Havana tonight confirming the report recently received of the Spanish losses sustained near Santiago and other towns near by while attempting to capture the cargo of a filibustering vessel. The Spaniards were routed and they wired Dechisine, thirty miles away, for aid. A train was made up there at once with great
