VICTORIA'S WEALTH. WORTH $100,000,000 IN HER OWN RIGHT—THE QUEEN'S POCKET MONEY. During the near three score years that Queen Victoria has occupied the throne of Great Britain she has been enabled to amass such an enormous fortune that the news published in the English paper, and likewise contained in the cable dispatches sent this country, to the effect that she is about to make a new will, is calculated to excite widespread interest—an interest extending to this side of the Atlantic, since it is known that no inconsiderable portion of her Majesty's wealth is invested in the United States. The will now in existence was made more than a quarter of a century ago. Queen Victoria enjoys the distinction of being the first English sovereign who has ever had anything to leave. All of her predecessors upon the throne bequeathed to their successor nothing but debts, which Parliament was called upon to pay. While the Queen permitted the nation thus to settle the liabilities of her uncles, King George IV and King William IV, she made a point immediately after her succession to pay off in full the very large debts contracted by her father, the Duke of Kent, who died while she was in infancy. This, the petitioning of daughters, as well as some of her grand-daughters, who have in each case received from her a dowry of $500,000 on marrying and the settlement on one occasion of some very pressing liabilities of Prince of Wales, may be said to have constituted the only very heavy expenses which the Queen has been called upon to meet since she ascended the throne in 1837. From that time forth until the present day she has been in receipt of a civil list amounting to close upon $3,000,000 a year. Of this the major portion is assigned to definite heads of royal expenditure. But $300,000 per annum is devoted to what is called the Queen's privy purse, and constitutes her pocket money, of which no account is ever asked. Besides this, she has at her disposal the net revenues of the Duchy of Lancaster, which have amounted on an average to $300,000 a year more. From this it will be seen that after having all expenses of every conceivable character down to her very charities and servants' wages, defrayed out of the civil list, she has a sum of at least $600,000 each year to dispose of as she lists, and which she is known to have set aside. This in itself, when added up, represents a minimum of $36,000,000, and when it is remembered that the revenues of the Duchy of Lancaster are all the time increasing, the net revenues for last year being $450,000, as compared with $300,000 ten years ago, and that, moreover, the Queen's savings have been most judiciously invested, for the most part in land, which has increased almost tenfold in value during the last half century, it is no exaggeration to estimate the present fortune of her Majesty from these sources alone as in the neighborhood of Merit Is what gives Hood's Sarsaparilla its great popularity, its constantly increasing sales, and enables it to accomplish its wonderful and unequalled cures. The combination, proportion and process used in preparing Hood's Sarsaparilla are unknown to other medicines, and make Hood's Sarsaparilla Peculiar to Itself It cures a wide range of diseases because of its power as a blood purifier. It acts directly and positively upon the blood, and the blood reaches every nook and corner of the human system. Thus all the nerves, muscles, bones and tissues come under the beneficent influence of Hood's Sarsaparilla The One True Blood Purifier. $1 per bottle. Hood's Pills cure Liver Ills; easy to take, easy to operate. 250. THE CORN. A song of the corn, the sturdy corn, which brightens this land of ours! Its tender green, in the early spring, is fairer than blossoming flowers; Its amber silk, with its glossy sheen, is fit for a fairy's loom, And dearer its dimpled, golden ears than the rose or illly's bloom. For they bear the promise of happy hours to the man who tolls for bread, When he need not fear that his little ones must go to their sleep unfed. There are lovely flowers in this land of ours, wherever the foot may fall. The tongue and ear alike would tire should I try to tell them all. From the arbustus on Atlantic shores to the golden poppy's gleams, As bright as the metal which lies at its roots by California streams. But never a flower such gifts has gained from the sun and dews of morn. Or stands more fair in the summer air than the blessed, golden corn! PEARLS FOUND IN SCOTIA. One From Aberdeenshire Said to Form One of the Queen's Jewels. One is so much acustomed to associate pearls with the eastern and gold with the southwestern countries of the world that the discovery of pearls in Scotland and gold in Wales seems somewhat opposed to the order of things. That gold exists in Wales is of course BEND LOW AND HARK. Bend low and hark with me, my dear, How the winds sigh! A voice is on them that I fear— It brings the bygone days so near, Like a soul's ory. Those whom we bury out of sight, How still they lie! Beyond the reaches of the light, Outside the realm of day and night— Do they not die? Shall we unbar long closed door, You dear, or if? Could love be what it was before If we should call them back once more And they reply? Would they life's largess claim again? They draw too night! O winds, be still! You shall not pain My heart with that long hushed refrain As you sweep by. The dead have had their shining day— Why should they try To listen to the words we say, To breathe their blight upon our May? Yet the winds sigh. —Louise Chandler Moulton. Most Popular Newels. The novel or story which has probably enjoyed the largest term of popularity is "Robinson Crusoe," by Daniel Defoe published in 1719. This novel attains great popularity from its first appearance and is one of the very few that have continued to be popular down to the present day, or for more than 15 years. Defoe died April 24, 1781. The next most popular works of fiction were The Waverley novels of Sir Walter Scott published in 1814-1881. So successful have these novels been from then now that no fewer than 80 men have been uninterruptedly engaged by one Edinburgh firm for the last quarter of century in producing them. Of Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, "Uncle Tom Cabin," published in 1851, more than a million copies in English have been sold. —Philadelphia Times. Independence of Janitors. The young man in dinner jacket hung forgotten his keys—left them in his pockets of his afternoon dress. He pulling with all his might the bellknife in the midnight air, saturation by rains. In the basement drawing room the jar tor is surrounded by blue spirals from his cigar, as blond as the hair of a fair princess. The janitor's wife is reading The North American Review. The daughter, Ada, whose neck is swanlike is playing a "Reverie" by Chopin on the grand piano, painted in delicate representations of roses on a light green background. In time the young man will brew the bellrope. —Exchange. The Lone Juryman Not Unanimous. SERVIA'S KING DESIRES TO WED. AN AUSTRIAN LADY HIS CHOICE—OPPOSITION FROM THE YOUNG WOMAN'S PARENTS. LONDON, Dec.19.—The latest report of the matrimonial intentions of young King Alexander of Servia credits him with aspiring to the hand of the daughter of an Austrian Archduke. He has, however, so the story runs, met with unexpected difficulty from the lady's parents. This imperial couple, although able to trace their pedigree through untold years, graciously waived objections to the young King's suit on the ground of the upstart character of his family, but pointed out that an Austrian royal and imperial house could not possibly receive into its bosom a young man whose parents live apart, thus giving rise to a scandal. It will be remembered by a few people who take an interest in ex-King Milan's erratic career that a couple of years ago he and ex-Queen Natalie were upon the very verge of a reconciliation, and the world had been notified of their intention to fall upon each other's necks and let bygones be by-gones when the pretty picture was utterly spoiled by the inopportune discovery by Natalie that her remarkable husband had just installed a fresh mistress in a new and amputous domicile in Paris. The discovery reopened the breach between the royal couple, and the general impression seems to be that further efforts towards reconciliation would be hopeless owing to the complete impossibility of trusting Milan's professions of penitence. Now, however, that it is necessary to King Alexander's personal interests to bring his parents together, he has resolved to take the matter in his own hands. Fortunately for the success of his plans, Milan is in one of his neediest periods. He long ago spent the trifle of 1,000,000 francs advanced to him from the Servian exchequer, in addition to which he mortgaged his yearly allowance, provided by the generous Skupchina. He is now in a distinctly tight place, and King Alexander is well aware of the fact, and is warranted to take full advantage of that knowledge. No reconciliation, no money, is the situation. King Alexander went to Linz this week and took his father back with him to Vienna, where the pair still are. Nobody seems to know where ex-Queen Natalie is just now, but it is hoped to induce her for her son's sake to proceed to Vienna before the Servian New Year and publicly take her husband back. Then an effort will be concentrated upon the object of keeping the ill-matched couple together until King Alexander shall have been happily wedded, after which Milan will be perfectly at liberty to return to Paris and stay there forever and a day. Aching Joints Announce the presence of rheumatism which causes untold suffering. Rheumatism is due to lakio acid in the blood. It cannot be seen at all after having all expenses of every conceivable character down to her very charities and servants' wages, defrayed out of the civil list, she has a sum at least $600,000 each year to dispose of as she lists, and which she is known to have set aside. SERVIA'S KING DESIRES TO WED. That gold exists in Wales is of course quite a recent discovery, and the small and unprofitable quantities found have now resulted in the abandonment of the mining operations commenced by Richard Morgan. But the pearls of Scotland have quite different history. For centuries pearls have been found in the river Ythan, in Aberdeenshire, and only last year an Aberdeen man made some notable hauls, which he disposed of to jewelers of the northern towns. It was recently stated in a London paper that a pearl taken from the river Ythan is believed to form one of the queen's crown jewels. It is to be hoped that the belief is well founded, for in that case it may be reasonably claimed that the precious stone in question is the only one contributed by the British islands, a thought calculated to gratify our national pride, for Scotland might be worse represented than by a pearl in the national regalia. A story is told of an Aberdeenshire farmer who found a very large and perfect pearl in the shell of a mussel taken from the Ythan. Happening to visit London some time afterward, he displayed his treasure to a west end jeweler, who struck with the size and beauty of the gem, asked the price. The farmer demanded what possibly he regarded as a big price—viz. £100. Now, this was in the days when Scotland had her own coinage, and a pound (Soots) was equivalent to 1s. 6d., so that the £100 he asked would only have represented £8 6s. 8d. English money. His surprise and delight may be imagined, therefore when he received for his pearl £100. It is doubtful, however, whether the English jeweler would have shared these feelings of the "hunner pun," demanded by the owner of the pearl. However, he had no occasion to complain, for he is said to have sold the gem subsequently at a large profit—Scottish American. When Baby was sick, we gave her Castoria. Or stands more fair in the summer air than the blessed golden corn! —Ninetto M. Lowater. THE LONE JURYMAN NOT UNanimous. In the trial of a case in Powell county not long ago the attorneys objected to all the jurors who had been summoned save one. As no others were hand, it was agreed that the action should be tried by the one remaining juryman. After the evidence was healed the judge told the lone juror to retaliate and make up a verdict. He retired, and after staying out for over an hour can back and reported solemnity that this jury had failed to agree upon a verdict—Louisville Courier-Journal. It is the old lesson—a worthy purpose, patient energy for its accomplishment, a resoluteness undaunted by difficult conditions, and then success—W. H. Pu-shon.
