PRINCESSES WHO ELOPED.
Princess Elvira was not the Only One.
Princess Elvira of Bourbon, an infanta of the royal house of Spain, whose elopement from Rome with an artist was published in the papers a few days ago, is as closely allied by ties of blood to the reigning house of Spain as she is to the imperial family of Austria. But she is by no means the first Princess of the blood in modern times to startle by an elopement those who believe in the monarchical system.
These eloping Princesses have as a rule selected as partners in their flight men of handsome presence and unencumbered by wives and families of their own, so that there was usually a possibility of arranging matters after a fashion by means of a more or less morganatic marriage. But this appears to be impossible in the case of Princess Elvira, who recently spent some weeks in New York and Newport, where she was extensively entertained by Spaniards who profess allegiance to her father, the ligitimate pretender, Don Carlos. The Roman artist, Folchi, with whom she ran away, and whose influence over her is reported to be of a Svengali character, is a humpbacked and apparently repulsive-looking married man who has left behind him at Rome a wife and a number of children. Princess Elvira's life cannot be said to have been a very happy one. Her father, Don Carlos, one of the most dissipated and disreputable princes of the blood in Europe, shamefully ill-treated her mother, and within a few months after the latter's death married a girl thirty years his junior. This woman was a sister to that Prince "Baby" Rohan, who, driven from Europe by his conduct, spent nearly a year in New York as a waiter in a restaurant.
Natrally, the young wife does not get on well with her husband's children, and the consequence is that the Princess, whose sister is an Austrian Archduchess, has practically been without a home since her mother's death. Her brother Don Jaime, who has likewise visited this country within the past twelve months, is now serving as an officer in the Russian army, and has already an unenviable distinction as a confirmed drunkard.
Inasmuch as Europe will now become a somewhat dangerous place for the Princess—who, owing to the vast wealth (several millions of dollars) which she inherited from her mother, would run the risk of being incarcerated by her father and relatives as a lunatic, with the object of securing possession of her fortune—it is likely she will come with her humpbacked artist to the United States, where alone she would be safe from the persecution of her kinsfolk.
Princess Elvira in eloping has but followed the example of several royal Princesses of Spain, Italy, Bavaria, Saxony, Wurtemburg

Blood means sound health. With pure, rich, healthy blood, the stomach and digestive organs will be vigorous, and there will be no dyspepsia. Rheumatism and Neuralgia will be unknown. Scrofula and Salt Rheum will disappear. With pure Blood
Your nerves will be strong, and your sleep sound, sweet and refreshing. Hood's Sarsaparilla makes pure blood. That is why it cures so many diseases. That is why so many thousands take it to cure disease, retain good health, prevent sickness and suffering. Remember Hood's Sarsaparilla Is the One True Blood Purifier. $1 per bottle.

Before this incident one of the most popular actresses in Germany had committed suicide, leaving letters to the effect that she had been led to do so by her husband's elopement with this princess. This is only one of many scandals of the same kind in which Princess Amelie, who is of Spanish birth, has been mixed up. One of her daughters bears the same Christian name as Princess Elvira of Bourbon, and, following the example of Princess Elizabeth of Bavaria, she contracted a runaway and secret marriage with Count Urbna, which the reigning family were subsequently compelled to acknowledge as valid.
The Dewager Duchess of Genoa, mother of Queen Marguerite of Italy, was banished from the kingdom for ten years by her brother-in-law, King Victor Emanuel, for having eloped with an artillery officer, the Marquis Rappolo, whom, after the death of her husband, she married Morganically. He afterwards killed himself.
New York, Dec. 11.—Princess Elvira, the eloping daughter of Carlos, pretender to the throne of Spain, has been heard from. Unless she has already set sail for the United States she is still in Barcelona. From that place the Princess addressed a letter to her father, imploring his pardon, but declaring that since his second marriage with Princess Bertha de Rohan her home life had become intolerable. This letter was written as a sort of response to the communication which Don Carlos addressed to his followers and adherents informing them that his daughter Elvira was dead to him, and requesting their HE CRACKS A WHIP.
But He is a Phenomenal Artist In the Time of the Lash.
A decided sensation has been created in Vienna by a man who probably stared alone in the world in his particular love of performance. This gentleman's name is Piaksling, and he is an Austro-Hungarian by birth. He is an expert rather, a phenomenal artist, in the time of the whip.
The first thing he does is to take long lashed, stout handled whip in each hand, and, with orchestral accompaniment, proceed to crack or snap them at a terrific rate. The sound made by whips in this manner is graduated from a noise like a rifle report to the soft oil of a billiard ball. It makes a curious sound of music and serves to show how can regulate the force of each stroke.
More interest, however, is evinced when he seizes a vicious looking wrist with an abnormally long lach. It is pivided with a very heavy handle of meat length. This is his favorite toy; what he can do with it is really wonderful. He first gives an idea of what fearful force there lies in a whip lach on his hands of an expert.
A large frame, over which is stretched a calf or sheep skin, is brought out stage. This is marked with dots of paint. The man with the whip steps on; swinging the lash sound his feet fly at the calfskin. With every beat he actually pulls a piece right out from the leather, leaving a clean cut hole.
These pieces are distributed among the audience to show that there is trickery about the performance. As this he takes a frame with three shells On these there are a dozen or more medium sized apples lying very close together and provided with large numbers Any one in the audience may design which apple he wishes strick, and unerring lash smatches it out like a fist.
A still more difficult feat is the ping of coins from a narrow hedge bottle. A piece of silver about the half a crown is put over the coin bottle, which stands on the edge table. The whip artist, without pearing to take any sort of aim, sinks the long lash whizzing through the and picks off the coin without jarring the bottle, much less breaking it.
She Didn't Want Them To Fight.
I was going along a bridle path West Virginia when I heard a yeoman and a young woman talking nests:
"I don't want yo' all to fout," they girl.
"But you' done promised to marry."
Princess Elvira in eloping has but followed the example of several royal Princesses of Spain, Italy, Bavaria, Saxony, Wurtenburg and Prussia. Moreover, the imperial houses of Austria and Russia could have been added to the list had an Austrian Archduchess and a Muscovite Grand Duchess had their way. For the beautiful Grand Duchesa Olga, favorite daughter of Czar Nicholas I, had made all her arrangements to elope with Lieutenant Prince Bariatski, when at the last moment the lieutenant, dreading the Emperor's resentment, made a clean breast of the whole affair to his Majesty, with the result that Olga was married off post-haste to the disreputable Prince Charles of Wurtemberg, afterward king of that country, while the faithless swain was rewarded by the Emperor with such rapid promotion that before he had reached the age of fifty he had attained the grade of Field Marshal.
At Peach it is well known that Count Louis Batthiany, who was shot by the Aus trian troops in the market place of that city for his complicity in the insurrection of 1848, could have effected his escape the day before his execution had he consented to fly with the Archduchess Maria, who was head over ears in love with him, and who endeavored in vain to make him forget the vows that bound him to his own beautiful and devoted wife.
Of the reigning house of Spain the Infanta Isabella and the Infanta Josephine, who, as sisters of King Francis of Spain, are grand-ants of the little King, Don Alphonse, eloped with the men who subsequently became their morganatic husbande. The Princess Isabella quitted the house of her father at Eghein, near Paris, in the most romantic fashion—by a rope ladder—in the middle of the night, the handsome Polish Count Gurowski, to whom she had lost her heart, having a carriage in waiting at the garden gate. The couple fled to England, where they were married. But the union did not turn out happily, and when the Count died in 1887, at Paris, he had been separated for years from his wife, who has now degenerated into one of the least respectable members of the reigning house of Spain, being constantly in financial difficulties and resorting to methods the reverse of royal to obtain money.
Princess Josephine was living at Madrid at the Royal Palace with her sister-in-law, Queen Isabella, at the time she eloped with the journalist and poet, Guel y Rente, who had started in life as a reporter for a daily newspaper in Havana. His story reads almost like a fairy tale. Having become infatuated with the daughter of a rich Cuban planter, his suit was opposed by the father of the girl in the most contemptuous terms. He told the lad that he was of too low origin ever to dream of marrying his daughter. Enraged beyond measure, Guel y Rente exclaimed that he would show people who he was by marrying a royal Princess.
He went to Madrid, where, after meeting with many rebuffs and suffering want, and even hunger, he finally succeeded in making a name for himself as a poet and author. Several poems which he dedicated to Princess Josephine sufficed to turn her head. She made the poet's acquaintance, and they soon became enamored. They eloped one day from Madrid, and after a secret marriage at Valladolid, made their way to Paris.

He told the lad that he was of far too low origin ever to dream of marrying his daughter.
They eloped one day from Madrid, and, after a secret marriage at Valladolid, made their way to Paris.
Consternation prevailed in the royal family and in court circles when their flight became known. The scandal was rendered doubly great by the fact that Guel y Rente was a pronounced Radical. Both the Court and Government made strenuous efforts to have the marriage invalidated, but in vain. The people were delighted with the union, and manifested in the strongest manner their dissatisfaction with the sentence of banishment pronounced against the fugitive lovers. After awhile the good nature for which Queen Isabella has always been famed prevailed, and the couple returned to Spain with honor, the sovereign receiving the popular poet in every way as her brother-in-law. The royal family had at no time reason to regret the marriage, and his three sons are perhaps the most popular and certainly the most accomplished men in either Madrid or Paris.
Barely three years have elapsed since society in every capital in Europe was startled by the news of the elopement of a granddaughter of the Emperor of Austria, Princess Elizabeth of Bavaria, with a young infantry lieutenant, Baron Sefried, a cousin of the nobleman who is chief executioner and hangman to the Government at Vienna. The Princess had for two years been infatuated with the young officer, and everything possible had been done by her parents and relatives to put a stop to the affair. One fine day she disappeared from Munich with her lover, induced a village priest in the Italian Alps to perform a marriage ceremony, and remained traveling about Italy until her grandfather, Emperor Francis Joseph, procured from her parents a pardon for the young couple. As a still further token of his kindness, he secured the transfer of the young Baron from the Bavarian to the Austrian army, in which latter he gave him a commission and likewise presented the young couple with a handsome estate and with an annuity.
Another Bavarian Princess who has eloped, not once, but half a dozen times, is Princess Amelie, who is now so eccentric in her behavior that were she of less high rank she would be placed under restraint as a lunatic. Not long ago she startled the audience of the Court Theatre at Munich by insisting on sitting on the balustrade of the royal box, with her feet dangling over the heads of the audience below. It was not until she commenced to sit astride of the rail and to howl and shriek that she was

THE CRACKLE A WHIP.
Is a Phenomenal Artist In the Use of the Lash.
Provided sensation has been created by a man who probably stands in the world in his particular line of performance. This gentleman's name is Ing, and he is an Austro-Hun- by birth. He is an expert, or, a phenomenal artist, in the use of whip.
First thing he does is to take a washed, stout handled whip in each hand, with orchestral accompaniment to crack or snap them at no rate. The sound made by his hands this manner is graduated from like a rifle report to the soft clicked ball. It makes a curious sort of noise and serves to show how he manipulate the force of each stroke.
Interest, however, is evinced when seizes a vicious looking whip on abnormally long lash. It is pro- with a very heavy handle of medi-gth. This is his favorite toy, and he can do with it is really won- He first gives an idea of what force there lies in a whip lash in ends of an expert.
Large frame, over which is stretched our sheep skin, is brought on the This is marked with dots of red. The man with the whip steps up, wringing the lash round his head, at the calfskin. With every blow usually pulls a piece right out from another, leaving a clean cut hole.
The pieces are distributed among audience to show that there is no way about the performance. After takes a frame with three shelves, these there are a dozen or more of amused apples lying very close to and provided with large numbers. One in the audience may designate apple he wishes strunk, and the lash lash smatches it out like a flash. Will more difficult feat is the snapping coins from a narrow necked A piece of silver about the size if a crown is put over the cork of little, which stands on the edge of face. The whip artist, without ap- to take any sort of aim, sends lash whizzing through the airicks off the coin without jarring little, much less breaking it.—Vi-Letter.
