NEWS OF LINCOLN'S DEATH. HOW JEFFERSON DAVIS RECEIVED JOHNSON'S DISPATCH ANNOUNCING IT. About April 18, 1865, I was sent under a flag of truce to Charlotte, N.C., entering the town with E. M. Clard, a member of my company, as an escort, we were conducted to headquarters, a large upper room, evidently a school room, where the guard pointed out General Echols, a portly, fine-looking man, commander of the post. Removing my hat, I advanced to where General Echols sat, at one end of a long table, and laid my dispatches on the table. "General Echols, I presume. These dispatches are from General Gillam. Shall I wait for an answer?" "Please be seated," the General said. Glancing around the room I saw sixteen or eighteen gentlemen, all, with one or two exceptions, in military uniform. Colonel Cal Morgan, who had been our prisoner a few months before, came to where I was sitting, and shaking hands said, "I believe you and I are not altogether strangers." While we chatted a gentleman in a civilian suit turned to address General Echols. The cold stare of a glass eye caught my attention, and the features were not unfamiliar. "Oh! Jeff Davis, and you here, pressed to the wall," was my first thought. I saw, however, a much pleasant face man than our Northern papers had pictured. A soul of kindly impulses beamed from every feature. A dispatch was handed to General Echols, who read and reread it, with an anxious earnest look upon his face. Half rising, he passed the paper to Mr. Davis. General Echols sat at one end of the table with two gentlemen between him and Mr. Davis. Mr. Davis read it slowly, and handing it back, remarked, "Well, we have lost a generous enemy." I paid little attention to what Mr. Davis said, supposing one of our Northern Generals had been killed or died. The dispatch went the rounds, finishing in Colonel Morgan's hands, who asked General Echols, if consistent, to allow me to read it. "Oh, yes, give it to him," he said. I read: GREENSBORO, N.C., April— Lincoln was assassinated the night of the 14th in Ford's Theater. Seward was assassinated about the same time in his own house. Grant has matched his army back to Washington to declare himself military dictator. J.E.Johnston. I cannot recall the exact date of this dispatch. But it necessarily traveled slowly, as we had out all the telegraph wires, torn up railroads, and impeded travel all we could. In laying down the dispatches in front of General Echols, I remarked casually, "Pretty good pill, General, but too thick." The strange sayings of children would fill a volume—for the matter of that, have filled one, I believe—while as for the situations they adopt in their play, they are imitated from the life dramas of their elders with that rockless disregard for consistency and development that often distinguishes the dramatist. A friend of mine who had been Christmasing in the country told me of a very funny example of this trait in "our little ones." A large party of children were sent up to the schoolroom one afternoon to amuse themselves, and after a time two ladies made an exorcism from the drawing room to see how they were getting on. The youngsters were "play acting," and the scene in which they were engaged was that of a fashionable wedding. Away from the group of performers stood in a corner a tiny girl of about 8. Thinking the child had been banished as too young to join in the game, one of the ladies went up to console with her and ask the reason of her solitude. "Oh, hush!" said the tiny mite, who could scarcely speak plainly. "I see the baby,' on know, and I've waited in to be born'd."—London Sketch. Capital Punishment In Calabar. The famous Calabar bean is said to be worse than strychnine. The natives use President Krüger lives up to ten principles. When in Paris he all invitations to go out on a ballet and he thought the costumes ladies at the opera or parties modest. He said he could not look at a ballet. The one he had ever read besides the Ballet "History of the Princes of Cairo" "History of the Thirty Years Motley's" "History of the Dutch Ilie," Macanlay's writings on Orange and "The Pilgrimress." He said that in the Tale when a boy was sent to school provided with a gun and a pennant. He could then bring a bag of game and defend against the Kaffirs, but the parents nevertheless, to make these sell boys understand that the meek heritate earth. Another story told of Presidents is that when he got home from Europe he said England enough, but the land seemed owned by somebody. One could go out into the country and under a tree to smoke his pipe body would come along and sauntered on the land and ask wanderer was doing there.—Buffetier. Ducking Stools are not used formerly at Chester, Cambridge by Southam, Coventry Nottingham (Notts), Retford Scarborough, Hull, Beverley (near Leeds), Ilkley East Craven, Manchester Liverpool Kirkham Burnley Derby Chester Kingston-on-Thames and Leicester examples of the actual instrument still to be preserved at Leominster which Scarborough and Leicester latest recorded use of the duck (the designations cuckling and were, of course, synonymous in Queen Elizabeth) was in Leominster when named Jenny Pipes alias Jane was paraded through the town ducking stool and ducked in near Kenwater bridge by order magistrates. In 1817 another called Sarah Leeke was wheeled the place in the same chair; ducked as fortunately for her terrier was too low. The instrumentishment in question has not been since then.—Notes and Queries. "Oh, yes, give it to him," he said. I read: GREENSBORO, N. C., April—Lincoln was assassinated the night of the 14th in Ford's Theater. Seward was assassinated about the same time in his own house. Grant has marched his army back to Washington to declare himself military dictator. J. E. Johnston. I cannot recall the exact date of this dispatch. But it necessarily traveled slowly, as we had cut all the telegraph wires, torn up railroads, and impeded travel all we could. In laying down the dispatches in front of General Echols, I remarked casually, "Pretty good pill, General, but too thickly coated." I presumed it was a doctored dispatch intended to encourage their men and dishearten ours. It was not long until Mr. Davis left the room and several others followed. General Echols asked: "Mr. Thomson, where is Burbridge and his niggers?" "Just back of Lincolnton," I said. I was somewhat incensed and retaliated with, "I see you have President Davis with you, General." Looking around the room the General said, "No, Mr. Davis is not here." "Mr. Thomson, I am surprised at your asking any such question while here under a flag of truce," said the General. "Ob, I beg pardon, General, you broke down that bar by asking about Burbridge and his niggers." General Echols, smiling, said: "Yes, President Davis is with us." Soon after we partook of a party repast furnished by Mrs. Echols, and took our departure for our post. A. H. THOMSON. Late Lieutenant E. Company, Twelfth Ohio Cavalry.—N. Y. Sun. How Sand Hillis Grow. A sand hill is not "made" so much as planted. Wherever a patch of "marrum grass" takes root, there the sand blown from the great bank gathers round it. As the sand spreads, the grass grows through it, until the hard dry blades form the nucleus of thousands of tons of "hills." Near Holkham bay there lay not 40 years ago a wet "lake" inside the high sand. There the "gunners" used to hide for curlew, digging holes and filling them with "marrum grass" to make them dry and comfortable. This grass took root, the sand gathered round, and where the "lake" lay is now a tumultuous mass of rounded billocks, rising 20 feet above high water level—built by the "marrum grass" from the surplus driftings of the mighty sand. POLITICAL ORSERVATIONS BY WAY OF RIVERSIDE. From the Press. It appears from the latest returns that Nevada cast only 8,507 votes this year, Idaho only 20,735 and Wyoming only 20,785. The vote of Nevada is about 5,000 less than that of this senatorial district, which includes the counties of Riverside and Orange. The total vote of Riverside, Orange, San Diego and San Bernardino counties is about the same as that of Idaho and Wyoming. And yet each of these three states has two Senators and a representative in Congress. The Prohibition vote in Ohio this year was only 7,838, as compared with 26,012 in 1892. The total vote, in the entire country, polled for Mr. Levering, the regular Prohibition candidate, was only about 150,000. This is about one per cent of the total vote polled. Certainly a party that only has one vote out of a hundred in the country cannot claim to be an important political factor. OUTLOOK GOOD FOR ORANGE GROWERS. From the Orange News. The outlook for the orange industry in this locality at the present time is very encouraging. The demand for oranges has not been so keen for many years—at this season of the year at least. The prices offered are good and the contracts more favorable to the growers than heretofore. The demand is so great that it is found almost impossible to fill orders with even well colored fruit and the supply of ripe fruit is simply inadequate to the demand. A great deal of the fruit being shipped, although looking well, will not have a tendency to build up a reputation for excellence in eating qualities, but the buyers want it and the growers cannot be blamed for turning it into cash as soon as possible. The local association, although not quite so numerous in membership as last year, has a fine lot of fruit assigned to it for the season's work, and everything points to a successful campaign. All growers, whether members of the exchange or not, credit the exchange system with being largely instrumental in bringing about the strength and stability now apparent. Orange growers seem to be "in it" this season. SHO! From the Orange Post. THE GAZETTE is a little hard to please on the chicken question. Last week it found fault with the removal of Anaheim biddies to the vicinity of Olive and this week it complains of the biddies desecrating the Anaheim cemetery. President Kruger lives up to his principles. When in Paris, he refused all invitations to go out on a Sunday, and he thought the costumes worn by ladies at the opera or parties very immodest. He said he could not think how any lady who respected herself would look at a ballet. The only books he had ever read besides the Bible were "History of the Princes of Orange," "History of the Thirty Years' War," "Notley's 'History of the Dutch Republic,'" Macaulay's writings on William Orange and "The Pilgrim's Progress." He said that in the Transvaal when a boy was sent to school he was provided with a gun and a pound of ammunition. He could then bring home a bag of game and defend himself against the Kaffirs, but the parents tried, nevertheless, to make these self-reliant boys understand that the meek shall inherit the earth. Another story told of President Kruger that when he got home from his visit to Europe he said England was well enough, but the land seemed to be all owned by somebody. One could not even go out into the country and sit down under a tree to smoke his pipe but somebody would come along and say that he owned the land and ask what the smoker was doing there.—Buffalo Courier. Examples of the actual instrument seem still to be preserved at Leominster, Ipswich, Scarborough and Leicester. The latest recorded use of the ducking stool is the designations cuckling and ducking were, of course, synonymous in the days Queen Elizabeth) was in 1809. It was at Leominster, when a woman named Jenny Pipes, alias Jane Corran, was paraded through the town on the ducking stool and ducked in the water near Kenwater bridge by order of the magistrates. In 1817 another woman called Sarah Leeke, was wheeled round the place in the same chair, but not snoked, as, fortunately for her, the water was too low.
