AW, SAY, WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH US? McKinley's the Man for the People. THE COUNTY ALL RIGHT. Republicans Sweep the Board With Good Majorities. McKinley Leads the Boy Orator by a Majority of 224—Jones for Senator, Chynoweth for Assemblyman, Ballard for Judge and Bowers for Congress All Have Good Majorities—and the Goose Hangs at a Respectable Distance from Terra Firma. THE MAJORITIES. McKinley...206 Jones...153 Chynoweth...124 Ballard...152 Bryan. Others arrived shortly, all eager to know how California had gone. When the news was later received that the Golden State had probably gone for McKinley, the feeling of satisfaction was general among the populace, and the sun rose upon as happy a lot of sound-money men as could be found this side of Canton. THE COUNTY RETURNS. The county returns were bulletined by THE GAZEITE with its usual promptness, and a large crowd gathered in front of this office. At 6 o'clock yesterday morning the first bulletins were posted, and as they came in during the morning hours they were given the people as rapidly as possible. Yorba and Olive were the first precincts in, the returns from those places coming in before the result in town was known. At 8 o'clock the returns from Orange, West Orange and El Modena arrived, and with the local precincts coming in made up a total of fourteen bulletins by 9 o'clock. A steadily growing majority for the Republican candidates was one of the pleasant features of the vote, and when at 11 o'clock the complete vote of the county, with Silverado and Trabuco to hear from, was put out, Kleinigkeiten. Now for the ratification! We remain the people, yes. The old Fairview school-house burned to the ground last Friday night. Wonder if Bryan thinks a bigger crime was committed in 1896 than in 1873—eh? The ring of a lady's gold watch was lost upon the streets on Tuesday. The finder will confer a favor by returning it to this office. Several scraps are reported, but we have been too busy with the election to give a thought to them. Always may the best man win. Ah there, Mark, old boy, did you hear the news from Maine? (P. S.—This refers to Marcus Hannacus Marjorious.) Hurrah for McKinley! Misses Ruth and Grace Smith entertained their friends at a Halloween party last Friday evening. Quite a number of young folks from town participated. Tuesday being a legal holiday on account of the election, the Postoffice and bank were closed during the day, and the schools were out on Monday and Tuesday. One of the humors of the campaign was the mailing of A. P. A. documents to Tim Carroll. Tim doesn't know whether the "Peays" were fooling wid him or not. Prof. Frantz thinks of raffling off his house and lot on Broadway. The chances will be from 1 to 99 cents, and there will be 45 series of tickets—4455 chances in all. A Santa Ana wind sprang up at about 10 o'clock on Tuesday night, and blew spiritedly until midnight. The weather was quite zephyry until yesterday forenoon, when the breezes subsided and we had pleasant weather. Our thanks are due Horace Greeley McPhee of the Santa Ana Blade for a copy of the Great Register, just printed at that office. The job is the best yet turned out, so far as Registers in this county go, and reflects great credit upon the office. The Halloween gals were out on Saturday evening cutting up capers disguised as train robbers. Several children on beholding them were frightened into fits, and clocks on the line of march are said to have stopped while the procession went by. Westminster is the banner precinct in voting against the adoption of the woman's suffrage amendment. No votes are returned with tally sheets upon any of the amendments, but when it came to the woman's suffrage proposition the Peatlanders rose in their might and polled 184 votes against it. Revival services will be resumed by T. D. Garvin in the Christian church on Sunday, Nov. 8th, at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. THE MAJORITIES. McKinley Leads the Boy Orator by a Majority of 224—Jones for Senator, Chynoweth for Assemblyman, Ballard for Judge and Bowers for Congress All Have Good Majorities—and the Goose Hangs at a Respectable Distance from Terra Firma. Orange county placed itself in the McKinley column all right enough, as our young friend Cal Wood would say, and Bryan got the rubber neck, to adopt again the exhilarating phraseology of the aforesaid young gentleman. The returns appear to bear him out. They are printed in detail on the second page this morning. In the local precincts the voting progressed quietly, a heavy Bryan vote rolling in during the early morning hours. At 9 o'clock it was said that the Popocratic votes in town exceeded the Republican two to one. At 3 o'clock in the afternoon the vot was said to be two to one for McKinley. When the votes had been counted, along about midnight, the result showed that the Republicans had a majority of eight votes over all. At West Anaheim 172 votes were cast, of which the Republicans received 87 and the Fusionists 78. The polls closed at 5 o'clock, but owing to a deadlock between the Republican and Democratic members of the election board the canvass of the votes was blocked until 10 o'clock, the Republican election officers insisting that the votes for the Fusionists should be tallied upon the Democratic and Populist lines separately, while the Democrats insisted that the votes should be confined to a single line in the tally sheets. This question had given rise to much uncertainty, although the Republicans generally conceded that votes polled for the Fusionists on separate ballots should all be counted for them. Some days ago a circular had been issued to Republican members of the election boards throughout the county, advising them to stand for the tailling of the Fusion votes on separate lines. This order was supplemented by a circular issued upon the eve of the election, and signed by the chairman of the respective county committees, arguing that the Fusion vote should be counted on a single line upon the tally sheets. This circular appeared to the bulk of the Republicans in this neighborhood to be ill-timed. The West Anaheimers began counting the ballots at about 10 o'clock, and terminated their labors at about 3 o'clock yesterday morning. The town was filled with people as never before, and the streets were crowded with wagons and carriages, some carrying voters to the polls, the others filled with people in to see the sights. At 3 o'clock in the afternoon, after a day of intense political excitement, and while everything was yet speculative as to the result, the electifying news was flashed from New York that, so far as counted, the city gave McKinley 30,000 majority. Simultaneously therewith came the news that West Virginia was good for 8,000 for the Ohio statesman. For two hours the crowd waited in anxious expectation of further returns from the THE GAZETTE with its usual promptness, and a large crowd gathered in front of this office. At 6 o'clock yesterday morning the first bulletins were posted, and as they came in during the morning hours they were given on the people as rapidly as possible. Yorba and Olive were the first precincts in, the returns from those places coming in before the result in town was known. At 8 o'clock the returns from Orange, West Orange and El Modena arrived, and with the local precincts coming in made up a total of fourteen bulletins by 9 o'clock. A steadily growing majority for the Republican candidates was one of the pleasant features of the vote, and when at 11 o'clock the complete vote of the county, with Silverado and Trabuco to hear from, was put out, there was a cheer for the local ticket that showed the enthusiasm of the people over the returns. A hard fight had been made against Ballard, yet he came in ahead as usual, with a safe majority of 152. Bowers for Congress ran ahead of his ticket, rolling up a majority of 377. And so the battle of the ballots was won, and the world will go on, and the country will be prosperous as never before. The returns from San Bernardino give Jones upwards of 200 majority, and Riveride is looked upon to swell his total majority to the neighborhood of 800. KILLED BY A BULL. PERLEY MOON OF BUENA PARK TRAMPLED TO DEATH BY AN INFURIATED BEAST—A DESPERATE STRUGGLE. Perley R. Moon, aged 55 years, who lived with his wife on the Linnen place at Buena Park, was killed by a bull at about 8 o'clock Sunday morning. The animal was an unusually large sized beast and was of savage disposition, and as is customary a brass ring had been inserted in its nostrils with which it could be more easily led. The ring had been broken and the bull was roaming at will in the pasture when Moon went to capture it. He had succeeded in getting a rope around its neck, and was evidently leading the bull to the stable when he was attacked. The scene of the struggle showed signs of a desperate fight and the ghastly remains of the unfortunate yellow when found by his wife were horrible to behold. The shoulder blade was crushed, and at the base of the brain was a gaping wound which doubledless caused immediate death. The deceased had gone out into the yard as usual to do his chores earlier in the morning, and not returning his wife went in search of him and was horrified at the discovery of the mutilated remains. An alarm was at once given and summoning the neighbors body was borne to the house and the Coroner notified. An inquiry was held Sunday morning and a verdict rendered according to the foregoing facts. The funeral occurred on Monday afternoon, the remains being interred in the cemetery here. BUENA PARK. All Halloween was celebrated by a party given at the Park House by the Misses Grace Dickey, Penelope Beard, and Jennie Johnson of Grand Avenue. It was a jolly party attended by the merry lads and lasses of the Park. The house was beautifully decorated with vines and flowers. Mystic tricks, fortune telling, music and games occupied the evening. There was an elaborate supper, and cupid says with the opening of spring flowers, wedding bells ring. Rev. Mr. DeKay received a call from the Congregational church to supply the pulpit until February, and was accepted. Rev. George Willett having resigned, takes charge of his parish at Whittier. The church serenades it usual promptness, and a large crowd gathered in front of this office. Simultaneously therewith came the news that West Virginia was good for 8,000 for the Ohio statesman. For two hours the crowd waited in anxious expectation of further returns from the East. The local polls closed, and people went home for their evening meal, and no further intelligence was sent from the big centers of the nation's population. At 6 o'clock the first of the bulletins that continued during the entire night, and which indicated a landslide to McKinley, by a groundswell that broke the record, came to hand, and were read to a packed house at Boyd & Hatfield's cigar emporium. Bulletins came thick and fast, and they were all one way. Everything went for McKinley. At 10 o'clock, after scores of bulletins had been read, all announcing a great Republican scoop, a young gentleman stepped up to the counter and asked when the Democratic returns were to come in! If at 10 o'clock it was a landslide to McKinley, midnight brought the intelligence of a great political eruption that had shaken on the country. Even the Solid South had been broken; Kentucky and Tennessee led the Southern States for the little man from Canton. When it was announced that Mark Hanna wired his congratulations to the next President, a great cheer went up for the gentleman who had been traduced and cartooned by the Popocrats as no man since Boss Tweed's time. Strange as it may appear, with big Republican majorities reported from all the Eastern and Middle States, not a word came from Pennsylvania. A Pennsylvania man in the crowd asked why was this thusly. The question could not be answered. No bulletins came from the Keystone State, and the crowd assured the Pennsylvanian that if his State was not good for at least 400,000 he had better get out of town pretty quick. Along toward 1 o'clock in the morning the crowd began to thin out, tired with the work during the day, but sustained and soothed with the knowledge that a great Republican groundswell had swept the country. The voters wended their way homeward, only to rise with the lark to see if anything had gone amiss during the night. As the first streaks of dawn began to illuminate the east the passing wayfarer, peering through the front door of Boyd & Hatfield's at the bulletins posted up during the latter part of the night, remarked that St. Louis had gone for BUENA PARK. Mr. DeKay received a call from the Congregational church to supply the pulpit until February, and was accepted. Rev. George Willett having resigned, takes charge of his parish at Whittier. The church services at the Park will be at 2:30 p.m.; Sunday school at 1:30 p.m. Election is over and the Republicans can crow over their victory. "From early morn till dewey eve"the "Governor"and "Bob Lincoln" were seen around the polls and looks of anxiety gave place to satisfied smiles as the returns came in, and "Bob" feels that "the repudiation of the family" is well kept up. Every thing was quickly done. The services of the deputy were not needed, though he was seen moving about with his accustomed dignity. There is a new photographer in town. The L. M. A. S. will meet Friday with Mrs. Chapman. Katie Dower of Los Angeles has been visiting at J. H. McKenney's. The funeral of Perley Moon, whose life was suddenly ended by being trampled to death by a bull, took place Monday afternoon at one o'clock. Mrs. Moon has the sympathy of all. She is left without any relatives in this part of the country. She has a sister in Kentucky, but is not sure of her address. Mr. Moon had four sons and two daughters by a former wife, all living in the East. The sad tragedy nearly renders Mrs. Moon insane. Friends in the community are very kind to her, and have not left her alone. Mr. and Mrs. Moon have been living on N. Leinan's place on Orange-thorpe avenue. Frank Hickey lies quite ill at his father's home at Sunny Side farm. Wanted. A fresh cow, must be a large, rich milker, and must be a bargain. Inquire at GAZETTE office. Lost. The sound of the saw and hammer emanating from the premises in the Dreyfus building recently occupied by Littlefield & Harker, early on Monday morning, revealed on investigation that the source of the racket was nothing other than the efforts of Carpenters Perry, Keith and Rounds putting up the kitchen partition for the chicken pie dinner which the ladies of the Christian Church were to set before the people on election day. From the manufacturing company of E. H. Dyer & Co., of Cleveland, Ohio, we have received the following very interesting letter: CLEVELAND, O., Oct. 30, 1896. ANAHEIM GAZETTE, Anaheim, Cal., Dear Sir: Inclosed please find two dollars ($2.00), for which send me your valuable paper [Heart! Heart!—Ed.] E. H. Dyer & Co. have ten car-loads of machinery standing on the side track here, for the Los Alamitos sugar factory. The steel work for the lower story is finished, and that for the upper well under way. Owing to the narrowness of the rail-road care, some of the machinery will have to be built up in sections. Yours truly, H. P. DYER. This is all very pleasant news indeed, and we shall be pleased to have another one of the Dyers upon our subscription lists. Good enough. Let the good work go on! One of most enjoyable social gatherings of the season was the progressive euchre party at the residence of Mayor and Mrs. Rust on Friday evening. The guests approaching the palatial residence beheld handsome lights suspended in the branches of the umbrageous trees surrounding the household, and the brilliantly illuminated interior presaged the cordial welcome that awaited all on their arrival. The proverbial hospitality of host and hostess was dispensed to all, and the gathering will be long remembered as among the most thoroughly enjoyable of the season. The game was entered into with spirit, it being close upon the witching hour of midnight ere the series terminated. Dainty refreshments were served, to which ample justice was done, after which the hostess announced that, by dint of good playing, Mrs. Crist had won the lady's progressive prize, a handsome hand-embroidered pin cushion, and by the exercise of similar superiority, Mrs. Ross had taken the head table prize, a beautiful embroidered photograph frame. W.J.Fay was awarded the gentleman's progressive prize, a handsome pearl-handed pocket-knife, and M.L.Rogers, the head table prize, an elegantly mounted plush shaving glass. Migkeiten. They would rally to the standard of their President-elect as one man,and if the British dared to fire a single shot, the world at large would hear the straine of Yankee Doodle sung in Lombard street and Picadilly so quickly it would make a Popercatic head swim.On no!Popercatic are Americans first, and partisans afterwards. We informed our friend Roger that if he could prove that Henry Clews ever gave utterance to this unappealably absurd proposition, the we would vote for Bryan. But he failed to produce the proof.Clews never said so,and no man of Rogers' intelligence believes for a moment that the statement was ever made by the eminent New York financier. James Stone of the Presbyterian church preached a very forcible sermon last Sunday on good citizenship. If more such sermons were preached it is very probable that it would be helpful to America; in part he used words to this effect: We have heard enough of gold and of silver, and it is not my aim, at this late hour of the campaign, to try and change your mind, as it is probably made up as to how you will cast your ballot. It is every christian's duty to take a personal interest in national laws, and those questions which appeal to the people to be answered by themselves. You say, let the State take care of itself, and let the church do the same. But it is everyone's duty to assist as much as possible to every reform that promotes the betterment of the people. We know that christianity is elevating and bettering the condition of the people, and yet it takes twenty Christians to bring one to the church roll. Now if it takes twenty reformed Christians for every reformed member, it is because we don't take the personal interest in our fellowmen. We are ever ready to grasp the hand of the leading men in the church who are in business about town, and we are very apt to extend our hand to the preacher, but some poor soul at our side who is in need of our help is so close that we don't see him. All because we don't give our personal aid to reform those that are in need of being reformed. It is true that there is now and then a minister who takes too great an interest in politics, but yet it is everyone's duty to take some interest, for God sent His son to live on earth, and so if we christians will take the same interest in bettering our conditions we better those of our own neighbors. After the sermon the congregation sang with enthusiasm and in patriotic strains the well-known and familiar air, "My country,' 'tis of thee," after which the benediction followed. The Judge gave a comprehensive review of the money question, but his principal arguments were made in reference to the planks of the Chicago convention reflecting upon the Supreme Court, the decision in the income tax case, and the plank denouncing "government by injunction." The address was learned and scholarly throughout, and showed deep thought and close investigation of the subjects in hand. Geo. C. Hagar presided, and there was a long list of Vice Presidents. There was singing by the Anaheim glee club, and although an earnest effort had been made to get a band, none could be secured. Finally the Santa Ana drum and bagle corps were engaged, but at the last moment they sent word over that they had a previous engagement and could not come. Yet there was no larger audience in the ball, despite these other usually adopted attractions to draw the passing throng, and Judge Towner must have felt flattered indeed at his enthusiastic reception. The meeting adjourned with cheers for McKinley and Hobart. Bicycles! Bicycles! At Motollum's Cyclery, Center street, Anaheim. All kinds of wheels to sell, from $10 up. All kinds of bicycle supplies.
