THE INCREASE IN OUR VOTING STRENGTH.
Orange county shows a notable increase in its voting strength, according to the returns from the registration, as compared with the vote on Governor at the election two years ago. The returns, which have just been footed up by County Clerk Brock, show a voting strength in the county of 4,179, as against 3,308 votes polled for Governor two years ago. This shows an increase of 871 votes in two years, and reckoning the increase in population at four souls to a voter, which is the usually accepted average, we find that the county has increased in population upwards of 3,400 during the two years intervening. Probably the whole voting strength of the county was not polled for Governor; there are electors ever who from one cause or another fail to get to the polls; but there is no other accurate means of knowing the precise voting strength of the county two years ago, the Great Register having been a duplicate in large part of the Register used at the preceding election. The number of voters who failed to exercise the franchise, however, is probably more than offset by the number who failed to register this year, as in the case of West Orange we find that the registration falls eight votes below the total of two years ago. All the other precincts of the county show a substantial increase. Those who have acquired the idea that Santa Ana is retrograding had best disbuse their mind of that erroneous impression. Though it has pulled up its street-car tracks, and the electric lights in a large part of the city remain unlighted at night, the county seat shows the very respectable increase of 157 voters since the election two years ago. This gain, however, is more than offset by the splendid gains made in the northern and western portions of the county—Anaheim and West Anaheim show an increase of 93, Fullerton has an increase of 100—the largest increase of any precinct in the county; Buena Park has an increase of 60, Garden Grove of 40, and Westminster comes to hand with the heaviest voting strength of any precinct in the county, having a total of 315 votes, an increase of 89 over two years ago.
Westminster is now the second polling precinct in the county, in point of num-
this season—would seem to dispute the implied assertion of our esteemed contemporary, that we pick out the big tests and let the little ones go. We print what we think is a fair analysis each week—giving the individual averages as we find them in the chemists' books at the laboratory, and the daily averages as well. There is nothing unfair in that. Yet because the daily averages are a shade lower than the higher tests—that is no reason why full credit should not be given the latter. Thus, what should have been an average daily test of perhaps 18 per cent was reduced very materially by this individual test of 9.9 per cent referred to; clearly these were beets raised upon poor land, or perhaps they were unripe, or perhaps the seed was not adapted to the land. At best they were no indication of the adaptability of this section to beet culture; yet they served to cut down the daily average. We print a fair selection of the tests each week, giving the big and little tests as they come, and then give the daily average as well—which the Champion has so far neglected to do.
THE RIGHT OF WAY.
As we write, on Wednesday morning, the right of way outlook seems particularly blue. The committee have failed to procure an easement for the railroad tracks from this place to the site of the proposed Alamitos factory; the amount of money necessary to purchase the right of way cannot be raised; the railroad surveyors have been ordered to Norwalk, and unless a fortunate bolt of lightning strikes us, we shall soon be printing a record of the actual beginning of 400,000 trees need to be factory from some other point than this town. The only chance for us to secure the branch line to the factory is for the Norwalk and Buena Park people—we understand surveys are being run from both places—to run the railroad people out of their country at the point of shotguns and pick-axes. Then they may return to this place, as offering the lesser of two evils, and raise the amount to purchase the easement which it now seems impossible to obtain.
It will be unnecessary to dwell upon the benefits to accrue to Anaheim by the building of the spur from this place to the new sugar factory, together with the construction of the railway up town on Santa Ana street and out to Placentia, which we have been assured was the purpose of the rail road people. Opinions differ. Some hold that the railroad would do us no good, but in this moment of public mourning we let that pass,
A SLIGHT INTERRUPTION
NO BEETS TO BE SHIPPED OUT TO BUT SHIPMENTS BEGIN TO ROW—SOME OF THE TESTS
No beets will be shipped to Chino telegraphic advice having been received shut down for one day, the delivery oat Chino having been such as to fill them to their utmost capacity. Shipment begin again to-morrow.
Two hundred and fifty-seven tons shipped from Anaheim on Friday last, the heaviest shipment so far this year shipped on Thursday, and 208 on Saturday but the shipments this week have no so heavy. The total shipments from county averaged about 400 tons last and up to last evening 4,500 tons owed been shipped to Chino.

The increase is not alone in the northern precincts of the county and their contiguous territory, but the southern precincts show a steady growth as well. Tustin has an increase of 49, San Juan has the notable increase of 56, Newport of 32, and New Hope of 27. El Modena has an increase of 21, and Delhi of 13. All portions of the county show a very healthy increase, the total increase of the county being 871 voters. This would indicate as we say, basing estimates upon four souls to a voter, a total increase in the population of the county in two years of upwards of 3,400 people. There is nothing the matter lighted at night, the county seat shows the very respectable increase of 157 voters since the election two years ago. This gain, however, is more than offset by the splendid gains made in the northern and western portions of the county—Anahiem and West Anahheim show an increase of 93, Fullerton has an increase of 100—the largest increase of any precinct in the county; Buena Park has an increase of 60, Garden Grove of 40, and Westminster comes to hand with the heaviest voting strength of any precinct in the county, having a total of 315 votes, an increase of 89 over two years ago.
Westminster is now the second polling precinct in the county, in point of numbers, having a third of the voting strength of the five precincts at Santa Ana. Fullerton is third, Garden Grove fourth, Orange fifth, and Anahiem sixth. We have lost our prestige as the "second town in the county," but this is due to our cramped city area. Voters residing east of East street come through town and wend their way to the polling place at West Anahheim and deposit their ballot, when by rights they should have a polling precinct nearer home. Anahheim should include much of this outside territory. We should then have, say three precints, and the town would be accorded its voting strength more in keeping with the importance of its immediate surroundings. Santa Ana has approximately an area of eight and a half square miles, while Anahheim has an area of less than three square miles. Mr. Brook's figures of the registration, together with a comparison of the returns on the vote for Governor two years ago, furnish an interesting index to the growth of the county:

A magnolia notes.
The week has been a silent one as to the movements of the Southern Pacific. Once again, I hear that the new route, for which Mr. Capitain got the right way from Messrs. Gilbert, Barter and Kennedy, has been burst up, and that the railway will go back to the half section road which was in the first instance selected as the most convenient route. Slight disadvantageshoweverwill be compensated for bythe increased value a local railroad always gives tothe district through which it runs, and untilerial navigation supercedesthe iron horsewe should welcomethe great pioneerof progressand civilization and realize thatinconveniencesofthefewmustnotstandinthewayofthewelfareofmany.

The esteemed Chino Champion would appear to have acquired the idea that the schedule of best analyses appearing in our columns each week is selected from the highest tests made at the laboratory—that because the daily average is a shade below a number of the figures of the daily individual analyses, we omit giving the lower tests and present only the larger ones. The Champion is misinformed; and although it doubts our statement that, as the chemists at the laboratory inform us, some of the largest beets brought in from the fields here are among the sweetest, yet that statement, strange as it may appear at Chino, is nevertheless true. We had this experience here two years ago—Mr. Hache knows that. Thousands of tons of beets, taking a second growth, and attaining a weight of ten or twelve pounds, so disheartened the growers, who were led to believe that the sugar content existed in an inverse ratio to the size of the beet, that several of them advertised their beets for fodder. Perhaps there had never been a beet in the world of ten pounds weight that was any good for sugar, yet these beets tested as high as sixteen per cent of sugar, an analysis having been made of a lot as a last resort of what appeared to be a hopeless case; and very few of these 5000 tons of overgrown beets were fed to stock. They were all shipped to the factory and converted into sugar. This year we are having, in several cases, a similar experience, and some of the largest beets brought in to the factory have been among the sweetest.
The fact that on the 30th ult. we printed, in the report of the best analyses, a test of beets polarizing 9.9 per cent—less we believe than any test made so far at China

The coyotes, taking advantage of the elemency that has rendered their scalps a worthless commodity, are multiplying their species in the alougs and tales of Alamitos at such a rate that they will soon own the whole place. The nights are made hideous with their discordant howls, and even in broad daylight the sneaking thieves are seen prowling through the corn fields. Several families have had their chicken pens raided, and feathers are lying over the plains as thick as the bones used to be in the old days of the sheep. As a last resort, the people are now baiting traps for the thieves.
The spirit of mischief is abroad in the land, and the miscreant has been caught in the act. The particular form of the grievance complained of is the theft of milk stands placed upon the road for the purpose of setting cans for the milk wagon as it passes to the creamery. One young man looked very sheepish the other day when he was ordered by an irate diaryman to lift a few sacks in his wagon. The sacks were lifted and a milk stand found beneath them. The fun has gone quite far enough. It would be a regrettable transformation to see a promising Sunday school scholar landed in Whittier immediately after his next attempt at petty larceny.
John Timney of Magnolia and Robert McClintock of Westminster have been camping at the hot springs for the past week, and will no doubt come home recuperated, with every trace of alkali left behind them.
Magnolia is about equally divided on the currency question. But time seems to be playing into the hands of the sound financial currency men. Second thoughts are seldom conducive to either personal or national dishonor.
The weather for the past few days has been insufferably hot, but nobody in Magnolia has died that I know of. One man, I believe, cursed a little, and as a punishment he should have been deported back to the cool shades of Chicago, St. Louis or New York.
The contrast between Tom Robinson and the general postoffice about carrying the mails between Clair and Anaheim will explode the day after the whistle of the locomotive resounds through the palms of Magnolia, and we will have a daily service too, and we deserve it, too, for there are more educated people in Magnolia than in any other place of its size west of the Rockies, and what will we be if we contemplate night school materializes? Railroad enterprise and beet talk will simply be beneath us. We'll sit on our stoops discussing the nebular hypothesis and the differential calculus. We'll wrangle over the authorship of the "Letters of Junius," and open the question afresh, whether Lord Bacon or Shakespeare wrote "Romeo and Juliet."

A CITIZENS MEETING.
ONE SHOULD BE CALLED TO CONSIDER THE BUILDING OF THE RAILROAD SPUR TO THE ALAMITOS SUGAR FACTORY.
Let us call a meeting of the citizens of Anaheim and surrounding country to try and see if we cannot raise enough money to purchase the right of way from this city to the Alamitos sugar factory.
At 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon all hope of getting the right of way, for which at least $1000 is necessary, had been abandoned.
Telegrams were passing between Santa Ana parties and H.E.Huntington all day yesterday looking to the building of the spur from that city to the factory site.
Are we to be euchered out of this road after all? Are we to permit ourselves to be branded with the curse of Cain, and let this railroad project go because we cannot raise a paltry thousand dollars? Are we ever to amount to anything, or are we to remain a one-horse Sleepy Hollow town all the days of our lives?
Let us get together and see whether this paltry amount cannot be raised.Santa Ana was yesterday in a blaze of enthusiasm over its prospects of getting the road. Are we to lie supinely on our backs and let this road alip through our grasp?
For the love of our country, let us quit being pin-headed numbsculle, and get together and see whether we cannot get the right-of-way for this road.

A STRANGE ARCH IN THE HEAVENS.
OBSERVATIONS OF A REMARKABLE PHENOMENON WITNESSED IN CHIGAGO.
Chicago, August 14.—An auroral arch of remarkable beauty and brilliancy swept across the sky this morning. While an auroral arch is not an unprecedented phenomenon in this latitude, yesterday's celestial visitation was marked by conditions never before observed by local students of meteorology. The sky was clear, and there were none of the conditions which usually precede an auroral display. The stars shone with unusual brilliance and there was hardly a breath of air stirring. In the north there was no indication of the auroral lights. At 1:45 a.m., a nebulous disc of light appeared in the southern sky. It quickly assumed the form of an arch and mounted rapidly toward the zenith. In form it appeared as a vast rainbow of light, cloud or steam, and there is reached higher it became more and more luminous. The upper edge showed clearly defined, but its lower edges were ragged and broken.
There was something indescribably beautiful and majestic in the onward and upward sweep of this arch of light. It stretched, unbroken, from the eastern to the western horizon and preserved the perfect alignment of a well-drilled regiment of infantry. Above its approaching edge the stars showed clear and sharp for a moment and then were swallowed in the luminous arbor, which seemed to increase its velocity as it neared the zenith. The auroral arch passed the zenith at 1:47 o'clock, or about two and a half minutes from the time it first showed in the south. At this time it moved with wonderful rapidity, many times faster than the low scudding clouds which precede a storm.
At its zenith altitude the arch had a width of about 25 degrees. It appeared as an immense band of luminous steam or vapor—the celestial track of some immense search light. In a moment it was speeding to the north. The rear edges took on a ragged, broken appearance, and in the east a jagged spur of light reaching almost to the zenith shot out from the main body of the arch and swept in stately motion. In less than two and a half minutes after passing the zenith, the arch disappeared in the northern horizon. At its periphery the arch was so luminous as to perceptibly in lumine surroundings. During the entire time there was no movement of the air and no sound marked the progress of the mysterious arch of light. Neither before or after were any clouds visible in the sky.
As the aurora neared the northern horizon it took on a cumulous rolling shape and its lower edges continued to darken. It was an awesome visitation, and in many respects it was unprecedented in this latitude. "I am convinced that it was a meteorological and not an astronomical phenomenon," said Professor S. W. Burham, the famous astronomer. "It was of too vast an extent and moved with too high a rate of speed for any celestial body of which we have any knowledge."
Seemed at Death's Door.
"My little boy was taken with inflammatory rheumatism when he was two years old and several times he has been almost at death's door. We were obliged to be up nights with him for a number of years. We finally saw Hood's Saraparilla recommended very highly and concluded that we would try it, although the doctors said that the boy could not live. I procured a bottle of Hood's Saraparilla and to my surprise he
