LATE NEWS OF THE WEEK. Water Board Discuss an Assessment. Will Probably be Levied at a Meeting to be Held on Saturday Next—The Baron Steinmetz Put to Scrubbing Jail Floors in the Los Angeles Bastile—The Report Yesterday Afternoon That He Escaped from the Chain Gang was an Error—Interesting Matter to be Voted upon in the Anaheim School District—Bids for the New Schoolhouse at Cypress-Zanjero's Break the Record in Delivering Water. The water board met in regular session on Saturday, Mr. Crowther in the chair, and Directors Key, Spencer, Nebelung, Browning and Amerige present. Mr. Spencer reported progress on securing the franchise from the city council for running the company's ditches through the streets of the city. Mr. Browning reported progress on viewing the pipe line near his place. A test had been made, and two breaks in the pipe discovered. These had been remedied, and another test will be had in the near future. Opinion of Attorney Melrose on right of way for the North Branch ditch, holding that the company have a perfect legal right of way. Ordered spread upon the minutes. Communication from C. E. Raemella, asking that a bridge be constructed over the ditch on Santa Ana street, at the junction of Philadelphia. Mr. Spencer made the point that the request for bridges should come from the city council officially. After discussion, the communication was laid on the table pending the securing of the ditch franchise. Under the head of reports, Supt. Shepard reported more water in the river and ditches than last month. Baron Woerms of Los Angeles appeared before the board and asked for the placing of a gate in the Southside ditch at his ranch south of town. To the Superintendent. The salaries of Zanjeros Littlefield and Stone were raised from $65 to $80 during May, their wages during the months of June, July and August being fixed by their contract at the latter figure. The raise during the present month is occasioned by the extra amount of work now being performed. The board adjourned, and subsequently having gone downstairs and been called back on account of the failure to levy an assessment, were again called to order for that purpose. TO A DUNGEON CELL. OUR OLD FRIEND STEINMETZ, THE BARON, SENTENCED TO THE CHAIN GANG BY AN UNFEELING LOS ANGELES MAGISTRATE. Our friend the Baron von Snigglefritz has fallen into evil ways. He has run across hard lines. He is in the chain gang—or was when last we heard of him. His arrest for carrying a concealed weapon, for which he was taken in, in the Angelic town last week, was in all probability the pretex for holding him on some graver charge, but so far this charge against him has not appeared. That the Baron swindled the Mitchels at Pasadena out of two hundred dollars if not more is now pretty well understood, and that he negotiated a loan of some sixty odd dollars from Mrs. Cadman, of this city, with which to bring a libel suit against this paper, is also tacitly admitted. A Los Angeles police officer was in town on Friday last interviewing the lady, and had in his possession damaging evidence against the Baron; but the lady announced that she would not prosecute the chap, preferring to let the matter go as it is. The Baron, on the occasion of his visit to Judge Ballard, the District Attorney, announced that it was his wish to have the proprietors of this paper "ground down in the dust" for the perpetration of its unseemly libel upon him; but when the Judge got through talking to him, the Baron was taken with a violent attack of cold feet. On Thursday last, when his trial was called for carrying concealed weapons, consisting of a revolver and bogues detective's star (both of which are said to be dangerous), a continuance was granted until Monday, to give the Baron von Snigglefritz a chance to get some money from San Francisco with which to pay his fine. On Saturday the money had not appeared, and another continuance was granted until Monday, when the unfeeling Judge sentenced the Baron to pay a fine of $30 or go to the chain gang for thirty days. The Baron is now reducing his avoirdupois cleaning the gutters in the Angelic town, and his friends of the Jonathan Club, whose legs he pulled in great shape on the occasion of a former visit to Los Angeles, are thinking of marching out to meet him and giving him a cheer for old acquaintance's sake. THE BARON ESCAPES! A dispatch from Los Angeles yesterday afternoon brings the starling information that the Baron Snigglefritz escaped from the chain gang, while at work in front of the Jonathan Club, and was making his way to the mountains, with fifteen police officers and forty-five members of the Jonathan Club after him. THE REPORT DENIED. As we go to press, a report reaches us from Los Angeles that the Baron's name was Kleinigkeiten. This week will probably close up the orange shipping season in Anaheim. The next musicale of the Aeolian society will be held Monday evening, May 27th, at Hotel del Campo. The ladies' euchre club meet with Mrs. Rogers of East Anaheim on Friday afternoon of next week. The junior C. E. society of the Presbyterian Church picnicked at Curtis's grove on Saturday afternoon last. The Pastime club entertained their friends at progressive euchre at the Del Campo last evening. Now that the Baron is in jail, what's the matter with talking up a glorious old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration? The notice for the sale of a franchise by the city council for the maintenance of a system of ditches in town appears in another column. The residence of N. Hart on Claudina street is vastly improved in appearance since its decoration with a new coat of paint, and the addition of a glass-covered porch at the rear. The general postoffice has advertised for bids for the carriage of the mail between Anaheim and Clair post offices. The service will be tri-weekly and the contract is to be for two years. Blacksmith Connolly having returned to his place at the forge and anvil, Lee Scott is again at leisure, and was yesterday afternoon considering whether to accept of a lucrative position in town, or to hie himself to his old home in San Francisco—with the chance in favor of the former. Slugger McCullom of the bicycle agency informs us he knows nothing about the bicycle road race which a Santa Ana correspondent talks about. He however is considering the proposition of landing his terrible right on the Baron's right ear, in the event of our bailing him (the Baron) out. The Magnolia club is taking steps to erect a platform for dancing purposes, opposite the Clair postoffice. It will be covered with a handsome awning until the funds of the club mature sufficiently to enclose it hall fashion. The site has been granted rent free by W. H. Kennedy of Alamitos. The Santa Ana Herald appeared as a daily evening paper on Monday. The paper is a six column quarto, and announces that it has come to stay. Santa Ana has two evening papers now, and its wants in that line ought to be pretty well supplied. Charley Norman has entered the ranks of the benedicks again, and has taken to wife Miss Fay Stevens, one of the handsomest young ladies of West Anaheim. The weddiness was performed at the rei Under the head of reports, Sapt. Shepard reported more water in the river and ditches last month. Baron Worms of Los Angeles appeared before the board and asked for the placing of a gate in the Southside ditch at his ranch south of town. Mr. Browning raised the point that the board having adjourned, they could not come together again unless in special session, and as that required five days' notice, according to the by-laws, no legal assessment could be levied. The point was supported by Attorney Melrose, and the board adjourned until next Saturday, at which time the assessment will probably be levied. HENRY GARFIAS’ BRAVERY A FORMER ANAHEIMER WHO MADE IT INTERESTING FOR ARIZONA OUT-LAWS—HE WAS MANY TIMES SHOT AT, BUT HE ALWAYS CAME BACK WITH HIS MAN. Henry Garfias who died at Phoenix, Ariz., on the 9th inst., was an old-time Anaheimer, and is recalled by many of our residents, he having lived here in the early days. He went to Arizona, and became an officer of the law, and his record for daring in the pursuit and capture of criminals was probably never excelled. In the Phoenix Republican of the 9th appears a lengthy obituary notice of the deceased, from which we take an extract as showing the quality of his bravery: One of the famous episodes of Phoenix history was participated in by Garfias. A Mexican who has descended to history as "The Saber Slasher," rode an attack down the main street one Sunday, slashing with a great cavalry saber every American he could reach. One man died of his wounds and others were seriously injured. The man, being well mounted, escaped, but was trailed by Garfias far down into Sonora, and was found in a den of cut-throats. Garfias, nothing daunted, marched boldly in, captured his man, brought him back across the border without any such formality as extradition, and deposited him safely in the Phoenix jail, where he was later killed by Hi McDonald and a lawyer named Stevenson in an attempt to escape. Later a desperado named Oviedo was to be arrested. As he and Garfias were personal enemies, the latter was unwilling to undertake the arrest, but finally, on the refusal of of the rant of the police force to do the work, went out to do his duty. Oviedo was a carpenter at work at the school house with a loaded shotgun on his work bench. He had threatened to kill Garfias on sight, but the officer walked up toward him, his hands open and with pacific words. Oviedo, however, snatched up his gun and fired point plank at his enemy. Garfias was one of the quickest of men with a revolver and probably beat the record on this occasion, for when the load of buckshot whistled over his head he got two bulllets into the body of the carpenter, and the latter had hied away to the distant land. Several years later, while Garfias was city marshal, several Texas cowboys fresh from their native heath, mistook the character of Phoenix and started to shoot it up. They were plainly not acquainted with the reputation of the marshal. As the first joyful yell came to his ear and the sound of pistol shots opened the ball after the fashion of the Panhandle, Henry was on his horse. The tour under the head of reports, Sapt. Barron Worms of Los Angeles yesterday brings us to Los Angeles that the Baron's name was used unjustifiably in the rumored escape from the chain gang. The report adds that positions on the chain gang are so crowded just now that the Baron has not been able to be accommodated, and is giving his attention to scrubbing floors inside the jail. He will probably be put on the chain gang later on. THE LATEST CONCERNING THE BARON. We stop the press to say that a dispatch from Los Angeles received last evening, at 6:45 o'clock, brings the intelligence that the Baron did a particularly neat job scrubbing the jail floor, and his success in that line is so great that he will probably be given an opportunity of doing some more of it. The Baron's haughty spirit rebelled at first scrubbing, as might have been expected, but he was brought about very nicely by a threat to put him on bread and water in and in solitary cell. The Baron will probably issue a challenge on his release from jail to scrub floors with any counterfeit Baron and adventurer this side of Carlsruhe. REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS. EDITOR GAZETTE—Sir: I enclose a cutting from the Los Angeles Times of May 14th supplied that paper by its Santa Ana correspondent, which runs: It is proposed to have a grand reunion of the old veterans occasionally in the vicinity of the new postoffice at Claire, this county. J. M. Gilbert is the new postmaster at that place. Will you allow me to say that no such reunions have ever been suggested in this vicinity? As to the fact of J. M. Gilbert being postmaster of Clair, he has occupied that position for eight months, and at the time of his appointment due notice was given of it in THE GAZETTE, so the news in the Times is just eight months old. Should not the stupid quill driver at Santa Ana look up fresher and more truthful items for his paper? What with its mendacity and utter incapacity, the Times is getting fast played out.
