HAPPENINGS OF THE WEEK James Haley, Miner and Bunco Steerer. He Skips from Nogales, Leaving Fred Smythe in the Lurch, After Digging Up $375 in Anaheim to Open Up a Fabulously Rich Mine Somewhere in Mexico—Proposition to Move the Postoffice to the Deutsch Block—Meeting of the Water Board—Sample Ballots—Easter Services—Agent Darling Going to Make a Trip Home—The Pen Is Not Mightier than the Sword—Republican Primaries—Score of the Bicycle Road Race—Leo Stephan Liberated from His Prison Cell. A telegram was received by John Smythe from his brother Fred at half-past 9 o'clock on Sunday morning, the significance of which made John's hair curl: "Haley skipped for parts unknown." The fellow referred to was one James Haley, who arrived in town two weeks ago, with stories of a fabulously rich mine situate somewhere in Mexico, which he had recently discovered, and for the development of which his means were unfortunately not sufficiently large. He brought with him samples of silver ore which he said assayed $5,000 per ton, and he had twelve tons of the ore on the dump. He spent several days in town in the attempt to interest capital in the enterprise, representing that it was necessary to raise $500 to locate the mine, according to the Mexican laws, before extensive operations could be made upon it. He succeeded in raising $375, and on Thursday last, in company of Fred Smythe, he set out for the mine. Much speculation had existed as to the outcome of the investment, as well as to the legitimacy of the undertaking. Sunday morning's telegram divests the transaction of much of its romance. For several days reports had been quietly circulated about town to the effect that a miner from Mexico was in town with samples of ore assaying up in the thousands, and on which he was prepared to let a limited number in on the ground floor for a stated sum. In other words, if $500 could be raised he would return to Mexico and locate the claim, according to the Mexican statutes, when operations on taking out the ore on a large scale would begin, and the contributors would share in the wealth. After hearing these reports for a day or two, a GAZETTE reporter succesced in running the Monte Cristo to earth, so to speak, and had the pleasure of an introduction to him at the hands of one of our prominent citizens, into whose con- were trimmed in cypress and geraniums. Rev. Campbell of Los Angeles presached the sermon. Mr. Grimshaw, L. E Miller and Bert Boyd composed the choir. Rev. Reiser of the German Methodist church preached interesting sermons both morning and evening to appreciative audiences. The decorations were numerous and beautiful. At the Catholic church Father Smith preached upon the "Resurrection" to a congregation that filled the church. A quartet composed of Mesdames Rogers and Hiltscher and Messrs. Dickel and Rogers, sang the "Mass by Roswig," accompanied upon the organ by Miss Mabel Langenberger. The church was beautifully decorated. WILL IT BE MOVED? A PROPOSITION TO MOVE THE POST-OFFICE TO THE NEW DEUTSCH BLOCK—PETITIONS OUT. For a day or two past reports have been current that an effort was being made to change the location of the Postoffice from its present place in the Federman block to the new Deutsch block. It was learned yesterday that Inspector Flint had been approached by those favoring the change in the location, and on his visit here on Saturday last he gave petitions to both sides, for and against moving. These are now out and are being presented to the citizens for signatures. Mr. Flint will be in town again on Saturday, when it is said the matter of the removal of the Postoffice will be settled, so far as his recommendation to the Department at Washington is concerned. THE WATER BOARD. SOUTH BRANCH DITCH FOUND TO BE 150 FEET OFF THE RIGHT OF WAY THROUGH THE MILES TRACT —DEED FOR NEW RIGHT OF WAY TO BE SWAPPED FOR THE OLD ONE. The water board met in regular session on Saturday last, Mr. Crowther in the chair. Secretary Blennnerhassett read the report of the committee which had been appointed to inspect the Southside ditch, which was found to have been done in workmanlike manner. The grade was reported to be high, necessitating extra expense in backfilling. Filed. Mr. Browning reported progress on procuring right of way for pipe line, as did Mr. Key on securing right of way for a new ditch on south line of the Semi-tropic orchard. Mr. Spencer brought up the matter of the ditch running through Miss Burton's land, through which it was necessary to carry water to Mr. Nutt's place. Engineer Rogers reported that he had run levels over a contemplated new route for the ditch, and had found that water would not run north on the line of the projected canal. Kleinigkeiten. Mr. Meyer reports that the apricot crop will be unusually large this year. This is the beet thinning season, and boys are in demand to do the thinning. Did you see the ring around the sun on Saturday? What did it mean? War? The city election occurs on Monday. Our advice to voters to vote early does not necessarily carry with it the advice to vote often. Prof. Frantz is negotiating with the managers of La Fiesta looking to the exhibition of his pair of trained ostriches in the floral parade. The Supervisors on Tuesday let the contract for putting up the new county jail at Santa Ana to Hulteen & Bergston of Los Angeles for $19,802. A marriage license was issued in Los Angeles on Saturday to J. W. Patterson and Mrs. Medora Browning, both formerly well-known residents here. Walnut buyers are said to be around looking at the prospects for a crop. The yield promises to be large, although it is rather early to estimate the size. August Menzel, driver of the street car tells us he is thinking of fixing up a general tor on the car, one of these days, and attaching an incandescent electric light to its front and sailing through town in real electric-car fashion. August is a great boy. The editorials in the Los Angeles Express relative to the harbor appropriation have been positively the worst bit of unlittelligent travail appearing in any California paper for a year—bar none; yes, two years. Owing to sickness in the orphanage, St Catherine's school has been closed for the past and the present week, but as most of the children have recovered the scholars will resume their studies on Tuesday, April 14. A telegram from Sheriff Nichols yesterday announces that Leo Stephan would be released from the county jail at noon yesterday, the order from the Supreme Court having just arrived ordering his release on habeas corpus. The report of the viewers of the road running by Miraflores, which it is proposed to straighten to its old course, to obviate the necessity for turning too many corners, was filed with the Supervisors on Monday, and the matter was set for final hearing on the 20th. A. M. Williams is circulating a petition for signatures calling for the formation of a Republican club. A hall will be rented and regular meetings held during the campaign. Every good Republican should be come a member. Two of the upright iron pillars at the Ruhrman building lost their balance and For several days reports had been quietly circulated about town to the effect that a miner from Mexico was in town with samples of ore assaying up in the thousands, and on which he was prepared to lot a limited number in on the ground floor for a stated sum. In other words, if $500 could be raised he would return to Mexico and locate the claim, according to the Mexican statutes, when operations on taking out the ore on a large scale would begin, and the contributors would share in the wealth. After hearing these reports for a day or two, a GAZETE reporter succeeded in running the Monte Cristo to earth, so to speak, and had the pleasure of an introduction to him at the hands of one of our prominent citizens, into whose confidence the fellow had ingratified himself. Mr. Haley said he was just in from Mexico, where he had been prospecting for many years, and had recently come upon a mine richness of which was beyond all comparison. He exhibited a piece of ore just elisting with indications of silver. This was the ore that assayed upwards of $5,000 per ton, and there were something like twelve tons on the dump—$60,000 worth of ore already taken out, and millions in sight. Mr. Haley was temporarily in reduced circumstances, although he was not always so. His chin was covered with the matted whisker that comes to the lowest miner in his toil. He was cheaply, but not badly dressed, and a nervous eye that glanced hither and yon suspiciously tended to the conviction that the man was flighty in his attic. He met some of the party of prospectors, that had set out from this city a year and a half ago, at Tucson, where he seemed to be in rather affluent circumstances. He came to town looking for some of them, and was presented to a number of our people. He informed us he had a bonanza in sight, and was on his way to San Francisco—that is, if the $500 could be raised—to consult with manufacturers of mining machinery to be shipped to the mine. "What business are you in?" inquired Mr. Haley, after we had examined his piece of ore critically, eyeing us suspiciously with his crockery eye. "Only running a newspaper here," answered we. Mr. Haley's jaw seemed to drop therest. He observed that if he had known he was addressing a reporter, he should not have mentioned the mine at all. The mine was so rich that the least mention of it would result in swarming the country with people in search of it. He begged us not to say anything about the richness of the mine, but a request for permission to refer to his presence in town, was granted, and the personal mention referring to him in our last issue was the result. Some of the moneyed men in town whom he approached offered to put the required amount of money in bank, agreeing to turn it over to him whenever his statements could be verified. However this did not prove to be satisfactory, and finally he succeeded in getting $375 from a number of young men, who were to be his partners in the rich mine, and he set out for the mine on Thursday. Sunday morning the dispatch came that he had vamoused the ranch, taking what remained of the "dough" with him. It is thought that he skipped into Mexico, with Guaymas as his objective point, whence he may ship to San Francisco on a trading vessel. Nogales is on the line between Arizona and Sonora. A street divides the town half into the United States and half into Mexico. The town is on a line of railroad diverging south from the Southern Pacific at Benson, some sixty or seventy miles east of Tucson, and extending through Nogales into Mexico and on through Hermosillo to Guaymas on the Gulf of California. Versaola touch here from San Francisco, and freight has been shipped into Mexico from San Francisco by water by way of this port. If Haley's flight was timed to catch an outgoing vessel, probably he is now upon the water for some seaport town. He can found to have been done in workmanlike manner. The grade was reported to be high, necessitating extra expense in backfilling. Filed. Mr. Browning reported progress on procuring right of way for pipe line, as did Mr. Key. On securing right of way for a new ditch on south line of the Semi-tropic orchard. Mr. Spencer brought up the matter of the ditch running through Miss Burton's land, through which it was necessary to carry water to Mr. Nutt's place. Engineer Rogers reported that he had run levels over a contemplated new route for the ditch, and had found that water would not run north on the line of the projected canal. The matter was deferred, and given into the hands of Mr. Spencer to arrange for a satisfactory conclusion of the matters at issue. The Secretary read the following report: Cash on hand March 1st... $15 02 Water sales—Annaheim... 182 05 North Anaheim... 297 16 Bills payable... 600 00 Assessment, Nov. 2,'95... 10 25 Total... $1,054 48 Pald Treasurer... $1,084 48 On hand... $50 00 Treasurer Goldwater reported a balance of $3,235 18 on hand. Supt. Sheppard read his report covering operations for March, showing the expense account to have been $471 30; construction account... $594 34; total... $1,065 64. Recommended backfilling the ditch west of Ernest Brown's and the South Branch ditch in the Miles tract. Mr. Nebelung reported that bills aggregating $2,757 37 had been audited, including $1,440 50 for quarterly interest. In treasury... $3,225 18. Warrants were ordered drawn in payment of the bills. Hugh May, agent for the Wilshire tract at Placentia, wrote saying that the cement ditch through the place had been completed, at a cost of $272 29, and requesting that credit to the extent of half the price ($136 14) be booked on his account, according to contract. Mr. May's communication was filed, and credit given him on his water account as requested to the amount stated. Communication of C. E. Miles, stating that the line of the South Branch ditch running through his place north of town had been constructed 150 feet off the right of way. Mr. Miles asked that the company deim back the old right of way, he deed the company therefor right of way for the ditch as at present located. The ditch having been found to be off the right of way as stated, the President and Secretary were authorized to swap deeds as suggested by Mr. Miles. Petition of W. F. Foos, J. Lemke, Davenhire and Anderson asking that a private ditch on the Kraemer tract which they had kept in repair for a number of years be accepted as a company ditch. Referred to Mr. Key to get the right of way. B.J.Snodgrass wrote saying that a certificate assigning to him five shares of water stock standing in the name of Leonard Parker had been lost, and asking for a duplicate. Mr.Snodgrass' application not having been drawn up properly, the same was denied. Mr. Spencer brought up the matter of the gate to be put in in main Anaheim ditch for Mr.Meyer, who had hauled gravel to that point, and would like to have the same constructed. INTERESTING EXERCISES AT THE METHODIST CHURCH — APPROPRIATE SERMONS AT THE OTHER CHURCHES—BEAUTIFUL DECORATIONS. Easter services were celebrated at all the churches on Sunday last. The Methodist church was crowded at both morning and evening services. In the morning an Easter concert was given by the Sunday school. The choir, consisting of Miss Johnson, Miss Bourland, Miss Owens, Miss Warner, Miss Bailey, Mrs. Wilcox, Mr. Clabaugh, Mr. Hemphill, Mr. Berry, Mr. Bailey and Mr. Wilcox, with Mrs. Fletcher as organist, gave some good music, and a number of recitations and readings by the children were enjoyed by the congregation. In the evening Rev. Wood preached a sermon on the text, "The Risen Lord." The church was beautifully decorated. Over each window were palm leaves, and conspicuous on the wall back of the pulpit was the motto "Christ is risen" in letters of green. The chancel was almost hidden from view by the roses and lilies that hung over it. The services at St. Michael's at two o'clock in the afternoon by Rev. Spencer of Orange were well attended. The decorations of roses and lilies were very beautiful. The regular Easter services will, however, be held on Sunday next at eleven o'clock in the morning. The choir, composed of Mrs. Polhems, Mrs. Ross, Mrs. Rust, Miss Heimann, Miss Fay, Miss St. Clair, with Mrs. Hunter as organist, will render some good music. The Freshwater church was exquisitely decorated. On one side of the pulpit was a beautiful cross of white roses, on the other a lyre. The railing in front was wreathed in white roses and cypress, and the windows gate to be put in in the main Anaheim diton for Mr. Meyer, who had hauled gravel to that point, and would like to have the same constructed. City Clerk Nebelung has sent sample ballots through the mails to all voters in the municipality, for the election which occurs on Monday next. The sample ballots are as follows: MUNICIPAL TICKET. To vote for a person stamp a cross [X] in the square at the right of his name. TRUSTEES. Vote for Two. 1 C.E. Groat 2 C.O.Rust. 3 4 CLERK. Vote for One. 5 Max Nebelung. 6 TREASURER. Vote for One. 7 H.Cahen. 8 MARSHAL. Vote for One. 9 N.F.Steadman. 10 Each ballot contains under each separate nomination as many blank lines as there are offices to be filled under that nomination. Thus, under the heading of Trustees, two of whom are to be elected, two blank lines appear, following the names of the candidates; and one blank line appears after the nomination each for City Clerk, Treasurer and Marshal. If the printed names are not satisfactory to the average voter, he may write the name of his favorite in the blank lines provided for that purpose. To vote for one of the regularly nominated candidates whose name appears upon the ballot, stamp a cross in the square placed opposite his name. If you write a name upon the blank line, it is not necessary to stamp the cross. Three youngsters were ushered into the presence of Justice Landell on Tuesday accused of stealing eggs. No charge having been preferred against them, the youngsters were talked to in a fatherly way, and the impression sought to be made on them that they were on a fair road to perdition they did not pause in their criminal careers. A word of warning to the parents or guardians of these boys is in order, as the Justice says that on their next presentation to him, the sentence will be either the reform school or the prison, as their age may warrant. — In Derge's drug store window yesterday was quite an interesting card display, après pos de the opening of the progressive euchre season. A quartet of beautiful "hands" are peared, with faces up, at the four corners of a table, one of them a jack full on aces; another a typewriter full on aces; and the others particularly if not equally good hands. Stacks of checks lay around as though a lie game of draw had just been broken up. Of course, those were not euchre hands, but they were beauties just the same, and the display was quite an artistic one. — Recently the Rev. Dr. Leffingwell wrote for the past eight or ten years has owned three 500-acre ranch at East Whittier (some times called the Fay ranch, though Dr. Fay never owned an acre there), has sold some 300 acres of it to a number of influential men who, under the name of the California Free Ranch Colony, are already at work improving the property. About 200 acres are being set out to lemons, and other fruit trees will be put in as soon as possible. Homes will be built there, and ere long what has faded so many years been only an immense barley field will be made to blossom as the rose. — Mrs. Ursula Meyerleitner, the indigent wife of John Meyerleitner, who is himself upon the indigent list, died at her home North street at 8 o'clock Tuesday morning She was a native of Austria, and was aged 75 years. A month ago she suffered a stroke of paralysis and succumbed to that and advancing age. The deceased had lived hard with her husband for many years, and he been for a long time upon the list of those in receipt of alms from the county. The mains were interred in the potter's field yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. — The two-year-old son of W.J.Jone living between here and Garden Grove found a match one day last week, and having heard of celebrations and fireworks that sort of thing, set about to have a play on his own account. He went off to the barnyard where a number of settlers were doing their duty by the countryside Heinigkeiten. Frayer reports that the apricot crop usually large this year. The upright iron pillars at the building lost their balance and and igniting the match touched off first one hen and then another until he had quite a row of them going, to the unspeakable mortification of the barnyard fowl. The unusual cackling and noise soon brought out the household, and the fire was extinguished, not, however, before a number of the hens were entirely roasted with their feathers on. The Los Angeles Herald has installed a number of linotype machines in its composing room, and presents an improved appearance typographically. The Herald maintains editorially its high standard of excellence, handling local topics with vigor and discursive excellence, and locally it is bright, crisp and neway. Good luck to the Herald. E. E. Chilson has several notices of mining claim forfeiture in the Hemet News, addressed to R. Dunbar, F. C. Smythe and others, conveying the notification that he has expended his share of $100 upon the claims, which are situated in Riverside county, and that the same will become his property if within ninety days the others fail to contribute their proportion of the necessary expenditures. Agent Darling informs us that he contemplates making a trip back to his old home in Iowa, to visit his father and mother, who still reside at the old homestead, and whom he has not seen in twenty-six years. Mr. Darling has been agent of the Southern Pacific at this point for twenty years—it will be twenty-one next October—and he thinks he is entitled to a vacation to visit the old folks at home. He thinks of starting East some time next month. To-morrow evening at the Opera-house occurs the laughable society farce, "Too Much of a Good Thing," rendered by a number of our amateurs, under the auspices of the Legion of Honor. The play will be followed by a grand ball, and seats for the entertainment are being sold off rapidly. A large audience will no doubt be in attendance, and as the dance is the first to follow the close of the Lenten season those terpsichoreally inclined will no doubt be out in force, especially as an orchestra from Los Angeles will furnish the music, and the price for reserved seats is only fifty cents. Both Senator Perkins and Congressman Bowers have our thanks for copies of public documents from Washington. This reminds us, relative to the latter gentleman, that he should not, and doubless will not, have any opposition in the Modesto convention for the nomination as Congressman from this district. Mr. Bowers has been an efficient public servant and is entitled to renomination. Many thanks for the documents, gentlemen. Fred Mickle has been making some extensive improvements on his property on West Center street, and has put down a sidewalk and set out palms, which improves the appearance of the same immensely. Charles Federman & Co. have a new broadside advertisement in our columns this morning, detailing the bargains to be secured at their establishment in the stock of new goods they are now receiving. The advertisement makes good reading, and the establishment will be found a reliable house to deal with. Read what they have to say and then go and see Charley for the biggest bargains his store has ever offered. While the city of Anaheim is getting along swimmingly with its municipal electric lighting system, and is thinking of trebling the capacity of the power house, Santa Ana seems to be all out up over the present mode of private ownership of its electric lights as contrasted with municipal control. Petitions have been circulated throughout the town for and against municipal ownership, the number endorsing the former plan far exceeding those against it. These petitions were presented at the meeting of the Trustees on Monday evening, and on a vote to decide the question, only three Trustees voted for city control—not the necessary four-fifths—and the matter was defeated. Trustees Whitney, Lutz and Hunt voted for municipal ownership, W. B. Hervey voted no, and our old friend Doc Garner, the well-known veterinary surgeon and poet, abstained from voting—why, the reports do not say. The petitions were thereupon ordered to be circulated further, and another effort will be made to get a full vote on the proposition. There are two factions at the county seat, one for and the other against municipal ownership. What the conditions are, it is hard to say; but it is certain that not one consumer out of a hundred in this city would be satisfied with anything but the town owning its works. The engineer at the electrical power house reports that 579 electric lights are now in use, and when we consider that the capacity of the works is based upon a 500 light machine we come at once to a realization of the fact that the works are running beyond their indicated capacity. It is estimated that 500 light machine will stand 600 lights, if absolutely necessary, but the number already in use, while approaching closely this outside limit, is just about as far as the city authorities feel they can with safety go. Inasmuch as applications for some two hundred lights and upwards have already been tacitly made, there is nothing to do but to vote for an increase in the power of the lighting plant. An increase by the installation of a thousand light machine is what the Trustees will probably ask the citizens to endorse, and this will probably come in connection with the PERSONAL MENTION: Jake and Herman Stern went to No on Tuesday on a short business visit.
