THE WAR IN CUBA. IN SPITE OF MEAGER OFFICIAL REPORTS, THE SPANISH FORCES ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE AGAIN SUFFERED DEFEAT. HAVANA, Dec. 30.—In spite of the official reports the belief is entertained here that the Spanish forces have again sustained a serious reverse, and that instead of the insurgents being repulsed and routed, the Spanish are retiring before their advance. There are manifestations of a grave uneasiness in official circles, and the belief is prevalent that the insurgents intend another extensive incursion into Matanzas province and westward toward Havana. HAVANA, Dec. 28.—The news that Gomez and the insurgent army had turned the flank of the Spanish forces commanded by Captain-General Campos in person at Colon, and were well to the westward of that place, threatening a quick movement upon Havana, created the greatest consternation here. Since the killing of Marti, Gomez has been the military head of the insurgents in the field, and all of Campos' efforts have been devoted to an attempt to check his advance on Havana. The insurgent army is now drawing near Havana, and the Spanish authorities seem to have entirely lost their heads. At this rate the insurgents will be in front of Havana possibly to morrow, if they have obtained control of the railroads from here to Matanzas, which seems not impossible, as they were only a few miles from Matanzas when last heard from, and were moving rapidly westward. Gomez, by a beautifully executed counter-marsh, turned the flank of the famed Spanish commander, and, with his army of 12,000, made his appearance close to the town of Jovallano, well to the rear of Colon and commanding the railroads to Cardonae, Matanzas and Havana. The movement of the insurgents was an example of splendid generalship, accomplished under the most trying circumstances, and in the face of overwhelming numbers of Spanish troops, commanded by the best officers of Spain. The insurgents burned the railroad station of Quintina, East of Jovallano, and destroyed the railroads behind them to prevent the advance of the Spaniards upon their rear. The last news received was that they had passed Limonar, a small town only a few miles from Matanzas, and were pushing for the railroad which connects Matanzas with Havana. It seems that there is nothing likely to prevent them from besieging Havana, for the Spanish commanders appear to have entirely lost their heads and unless Campos has accomplished a miracle of daring strategy in allowing Gomez and his friends to slip by, in order that the Spanish troops may be hurried after them, and by a sortie from Havana, catch them between to fires and destroy them, the insurgents are masters of the situation. Further details from Matanzas of the rapid army, commanded by Gen. Packenham, consisted of 12,000 soldiers, and the American army, under command of Gen. Andrew Jackson, amounted to 6,000. In the month of November preceding the British force had landed below New Orleans for the purpose of attacking that city, and a battle on New Year's Day, 1815, having been indecisive, one week later Gen. Packenham's army rewired the attack and the British were routed, losing 2,000 men in killed, wounded and prisoners taken. On Jan. 27, the defeated British troops reembarked for home at the mouth of the Mississippi, and on the same day the Treaty of Ghent between the United States and Great Britain was ratified by the latter. On Feb. 17, it was ratified by the United States, and that was the formal close of hostilities between the two countries. By the official census of 1811, taken in the year preceding the beginning of hostilities with the United States, the population of England was 10,200,000, of Scotland 1,800,000, and of Ireland 6,000,000, a total of 18,000,000. The census of the United States taken in 1810 showed the total population of this country to be, States and Territories, 7,239,000. The last official census of Great Britain, taken in 1891, showed the population to have been 37,889,000, and the census of the United States, taken the year previous, showed the population of this country to be 62,622,000; and all the Americans weren't counted either. THIRTY CARLOADS OF "GREEN ORANGES" REJECTED. From the Riverside Press. The exchange officials are highly elated over the general satisfaction given by their first 40 carloads of holiday fruit; they are being complimented by all Eastern receivers and have plenty of offers for their fruit at $250 per box f. o. b., Riverside, but they have decided to give the new plan a thorough test and in future will make no f. o. b. sales at a point where they have representatives. The Co-operative Association sold their first and only car yesterday on this plan at a price equal to $275 per box for fancy Navels, and $240 for choice Navels, f. o. b., Riverside. A telegram was received from New York that a carload of exchange Navels sold in that city yesterday at prices which net $267 f. o. b. in Riverside. Word was also received by letter that on the 19th instant a carload of the Golden Orange brand of Navels in prime condition, good color, sold in Chicago at from $315 to $380 per box which net considerably less than $250 f. o. b., Riverside. The exchange have reliable information that at least thirty carloads of green fruit, shipped outside the exhange have been rejected at various points East, and there are probably as many more turned down on which they have no information. An employee of one of the heavy "green" orange shippers-stated in Los Angeles that it seemed as though they "had a kick on every car shipped and nearly all had been rejected;" he "did not see how they were going to get out of their holiday deal without a heavy army," commanded by Gen. Subscribed and sworn to before me this 28th day September A.D. 1895. JAS.W.LANDELL Justice of The Peace It seems that there is nothing likely to prevent them from besieging Havana, for the Spanish commanders appear to have entirely lost their heads and unless Campos has accomplished a miracle of daring strategy in allowing Gomez and his friends to slip by, in order that the Spanish troops may be hurried after them, and by a sortie from Havana, catch them between to fire and destroy them, the insurgents are masters of the situation. Further details from Matanzas of the rapid advance of the insurgent army through the provinces of Santa Clara and into the province of Matanzas, in spite of the efforts of General Campos and about 8,000 troops, show the insurgents' progress to have been of a particularly sanguinary nature. The reported important battle between the Spaniards under Campos and the insurgents at Coliseo Plantation, twelve miles from Cardenas, does not appear to have been a very severe engagement. The Spanish forces do not appear to have encountered the main body of the insurgents, as at first announced. The fight at the Coliseo Plantation was between a portion of the northern column of the insurgent columns, and instead of turning out to be a great victory for the Spaniards, the result of the engagement was virtually a defeat for Campos' forces, for the Cuban army pushed onward unchecked and is still advancing on this city. The fighting took place amid burning cane, underwosed, tall grass and trees, and was of the usual guerrilla nature. At times both the troops and insurgents were surrounded by walls of flames, and the smoke was so dense over certain portions of the ground contested that the Cubans and troops were unable to see each other, and kept banging away at open spaces, wasting good ammunition. This indiscriminate firing was more noticeable upon the part of the troops than on the side of the insurgents; but for one insurgent killed at least 2,000 shots must have been fired. The Cubans, following their customary tactics, seemed to melt away into the distance as soon as the troops got within fighting distance of them, and nearly all the firing was at long range, although the soldiers made several gallant charges through the burning territory. This style of fighting is termed a defeat of the insurgents; but as they succeeded in accomplishing their object, holding the Spaniards in check, while the Cubans pushed on southward, the result was really a Cuban victory. The Captain-General was as near the front as possible throughout the battle, encouraging the troops by words and action. One of the Captain-General's orderlies, who was sitting on his horse beside Campos, received a bullet in his breast, and fell to the ground badly wounded. The shot was no doubt intended for the Spanish commander. It becomes evident that the reports of Campos successful stand and rout of the insurgents was either unfounded or the forces he had met with were merely wings of the insurgent army, sent to make a diversion, while the main columns pushed on to the westward. All is confusion here, and the authorities are apparently at sea as to what will be the next step of the insurgents, whether Matanzas will be besieged or whether the advance on that point is merely a feint to hold the Spanish forces there, while the insurgents make a way once more in the west of Havana, which is less than fifty miles from Matanzas. The latter moving more rapidly than the Spanish troops, who are utterly unused to traveling in this thickly wooded country without regular roads and with heavy grasses and low bush wood to interfere with every movement, are not thought likely to be able to catch up with the quickly moving Cubans whose mocobites clear a road for their advance, and who are much more familiar with the country and accustomed to the climate, and can easily distance the Spanish soldiers only recently brought into the country. WE THOUGHT WE'D MISSED THIS IN THE MAILS. From the Santa Ana Blade. The following letter was picked up on the streets of a neighboring town one day re cently. The Blade committed a faut pas in quoting with apparent approval a paragraph from THE GAZETTE which made light of the intended breach of law in starting a saloon in West Orange. The license was refused, not because it was near Orange, but because it was in the residence portion of the county away from police protection. The same action would have been taken under similar circumstances in any other part of the county and we understand is frequently taken in Los Angeles county. The press—at least the portion friendly to the people—ought to uphold law and order instead of ridiculing scruples and principles that make for the peace, prosperity and ultimate happiness of mankind. Fred Mickle being sworn to before me this 28th day of September, JAS. W. LANDELL Justice ofthe Pa VOICE OF THE PRESS SOME HISTORICAL DATES OF PRESENT INTEREST TO PATRIOTIC AMERICANS. From the New York Sun. On Jan. 14, 1812, an increase of the United States army was authorized by the Congress. On April 10, 1812, the President was authorized by the Congress to call for 100,000 American volunteers. On June 1, 1812, the President, James Madison, sent to the Congress his war message, and on June 19 war was declared by the United States against Great Britain. On July 12, 1812, Canada was invaded by an American army, and on Aug. 13 the United States frigate Essex captured the Alert near Newfoundland. Six days later the American frigate Constitution captured the British frigate Guerrriere, and on Oct. 4, 1812, there was a land battle at Ogdenburg, where the Americans, under Gen. Brown, repulsed the British. On June 13, 1813, the British invaders of American territory were repulsed at Hampton, Va., and on July 11, on the north border, the British were repulsed in the battle of Black Rock, N.Y. On Sept. 10, 1813, the notable battle of Lake Erie between the naval forces of Great Britain and the United States took place, the American squadron consisting of nine vessels with fifty-four guns and the British squadron of six vessels with sixty-three guns. Commodore Perry commanded the American naval forces and they won a substantial victory, the entire British fleet being captured. On September 11, 1814, there was another important and decisive naval battle on Lake Champlain. Capt. MacDonough, with fourteen American vessels, having eighty-six guns, engaged the British fleet of seventeen vessels, with ninety-five guns, in a battle of nearly three hours' duration, during which all the British ships were either sunk or captured, and 900 English prisoners were taken by the Americans. On the 8th of January, 1815, the desultory fighting which had been going on in the Southwest between the American and the British forces, culminated in the memorable battle of New Orleans, a triumph so decisive for American arms that the anniversary, Jan. 8, has been perpetuated by patriotic Americans in celebration ever since.
