THE WAR IN CUBA.
NOTABLE VICTORIES GAINED BY THE INSURGENTS—A DECISIVE BATTLE IMMINENT.
HAVANA, December 17.—The insurgents, in spite of reports of their defeats, have crossed the military lines between the city of Santa Clara and Cienfuegos, the headquarters of General Campos, and their advance guards are now in sight of Las Lajas, well to the westward of Santa Clara, showing that the Spaniards have been utterly unable to cheek their progress since they crossed the frontier at Santa Clara from Puerto Principe at Iguira.
Everything shows the insurgents to be moving toward Matanzas, and Campos is on his way there to take command of the Spanish forces, which will meet those of Gomez and Macoo in a pitched battle.
HAVANA, Dec. 18.—Late this evening it was stated that the insurgents under Gomez and Maceo are in a critical situation in their advance upon the province of Matanzas, and that they are requesting the other insurgent leaders to send them assistance.
The insurgent army is now on the borders of the provinces of Matanzas and Santa Clara. It numbers about six thousand men, and is accompanied by about a hundred mules loaded with ammunition and dynamite. The insurgents also have two mountain guns with them. A force of 1,800 insurgents under Zayas and Linoperez has started to reinforce the Gomez-Maceo army.
The report that Gomez had his horse shot under him at the battle of Amptalie is not confirmed. The insurgents admit having lost 376 men in that engagement. Gen. Luque has defeated between Rodas and San Marcos, the insurgents under Cabreco, with heavy loss.
Detachments of Spanish troops are being posted at different strategic points along the border of the province of Matanzas and the province of Santa Clara, where it is expected a decisive engagement will be fought.
The combined columns of troops commanded by Gen. Canallas and Col. Boqueri, amounting to about five hundred and fifty men in each column, have fought and routed, successively at Palmarita Ramon, Tagus and Tortin, the insurgent forces commanded by Jose Maceo and Periquito Perez, amounting to 3000 well-armed men, though roughly supplied with ammunition. The fighting is said to have lasted seven hours and the Spanish troops are reported to have captured the insurgent position, which was believed to be impregnable.
The insurgents were entirely routed, leaving on the field forty-six dead and retiring with 200 more of their killed and wounded. On the side of the troops Capt. Juan Garcia Flourde Reederdel and Ferdinand del Acevedo, Dr. Polius and Veterinary Surgeon Castillo were wounded. Seventeen privateers were killed and forty-three wounded.
MADRID, Dec. 18.—El Horacio refutes the statement that Martinez de Campos will resign the governor-generalship of Cuba.
HAVANA, Dec. 18.—A great fire broke out in night in the market place at Matanzas. Hopes are entertained that part of the square will be saved. Two men have been arrested charged with starting the fire.
KEY WEST, Florida, Dec. 20.—Advices from Havana state that Campos will make desperate efforts at once to break the power of the was retained by the Rincon people, and some two months ago filed an amended answer in the case. It appears, however, that the names of defendants Pine, Payne, Pate and Cavanaugh brothers were omitted from the answer, and they feared that their rights had been forfeited by default. This will not probably occur, however. Mr. Cavanaugh went to San Bernardino on Wednesday to consult with Mr. Waters. The suit of the Santa Ana and Anaheim people seems like a short-sighted policy, insomuch as it doubtful if any water is lost to them by reason of its being used in Rincon. The work which the Rincon people have done in opening the channels and cutting ditches undoubtedly develops more water to find its way into the main channel of the Santa Ana river than is lost by reason of the little irrigation that is practiced at Rincon.
BUT THEY GET THERE, JUST THE SAME.
From the Santa Cruz Penny Press.
Did you ever, asked the Religious Editor of the Footprint last night, did you ever in your travels enjoy any snipe-shooting? Did I ever? answered the Footprint, with unwonted enthusiasm. I've shot thousands of 'em. I've seen fellows who dropped a handkerchief kind of careless like on the snipe and gathered 'em in with the handkerchief. You don't tell me, exclaimed the Religious Editor in mild surprise. But the boss way, continued the Footprint, is to have a pin in the end of your walking stick. You can shoot 'em right in the street and nobody get onto you. Dear me, said the Religious Editor, what an extraordinary way of hunting birds! But one time, went on the Footprint, I got a surprise. It was at Durham, and I was passing big tobacco works. There were a million snipes lying along side of the wall, and I said to myself, here's joy. So I moved over and just had my hand on one of the flock, when it seemed to me a thousand voices yelled; Bang! I looked up and there was every one of the 300 girls in that factory eating lunch in the open windows. Say, do you know, I strolled away so swiftly that I split a long crack in the air. Remarkable, murmured the Religious Editor, who does not know yet that some snipes wear no wings.
ALL EYES TURNED UPON CALIFORNIA.
From the New York World.
All eyes just now are turned upon California. It will be California's greatest year. Her orange crop in all likelihood will come to nearly three million boxes, or about nine thousand carloads, there being 300 boxes to a car. The fruit is packed carefully and sent out from the Pacific slope in refrigerator cars. Already, though the California groves have just started in to produce fine oranges to any extent, the slope fruit has absorbed nearly all the orange trade west of the Mississippi.
These oranges come from Southern California. The specialty raised is the Navel orange, which is a handsome fruit with a curious indentation at the top, and is juicy and rich without being either hard or pulpy. This is a budded orange, which the growers have been working for a number of years. With their "seedlings" (the oranges which grow direct from the seeds and are not grafted) the Californians have not had quite such good luck. But the quality even of these is steadily improving.
Every year about 2,025,000,000 oranges are eaten by Americans. Each box contains roughly speaking about 200 oranges. The

MADRID, Dec. 18.—El Heraldo refutes the statement that Martinez de Campos will resign the governor-generalship of Cuba.
HAVANA, Dec. 18.—A great fire broke out to-night in the market place at Matanzas. Hopes are entertained that part of the square will be saved. Two men have been arrested charged with starting the fire.
KEY WEST, Fla., Dec. 20.—Advices from Havana state that Campos will make desperate efforts at once to break the power of the insurgents. He has determined to force the fighting because of urgent orders from Madrid. The cabinet has informed Campos unless decisive victories are won over the insurgents immediately it will be impossible for Spain to procure money to maintain her army on the island. The Minister of Finance has said that the Spanish treasury is empty and the insurgents have made such a showing it is impossible to float another loan in a European capital. Campos is therefore told that unless the rebellion is immediately broken Spain may as well withdraw from the island. It is said Campos has instructed Spanish officers to give no quarter to Cubans in arms and to treat non-combatants as mercilessly as in the last revolution. Much excitement prevails in Havana over a report that a great battle would occur near Matanzas within twenty-four hours. It was stated that 4000 Spaniards under Gen. Pado were fighting 5000 Cubans under Macao and news of a collision is momentarily expected.
MADRID, Dec. 20.—A dispatch to El Liberal from Havana says that Maximo Gomez, Antonio Macoo, Laceretta, Suarez, Periquito and Perez, at the head of 10,000 insurgents, have forced the frontier of Matanzas and it is believed that an important battle is imminent.
COLON (Province of Matanzas, Cuba), Dec. 21.—As this dispatch is sent, the sound of heavy musketry firing is heard in the direction of Ajujua, six miles from the railroad between this city and La Macagua. It is believed that a serious engagement is taking place between the Spanish troops under Gen. Hernandez and the insurgent forces. The latter are understood to be commanded by Macoo and Gomez, and have been coming through Palama Sola, on the frontier of the province of Matanzas. Bugles are sounding the assembly summoning the troops of Gen. Navarro's brigade at once for Ajujua to reinforce Gen. Hernandez. Communication beyond La Macagua is interrupted.
HAVANA, Dec. 22.—Official advice from Colon of the engagement with the insurgents which was reported yesterday as taking place near Ajujua, as far as received, convey the impression that they were not of importance and that the insurgents got the worst of them.
Gen. Navarro, who was reported as leaving Colon for the relief of the Spanish forces, encountered the insurgents at the plantation of Antilla. He followed the insurgents upon their retreat and overtook them at the planta- tion Alava, the canefield of which was burning. Here a fierce battle occurred and the insurgents were dispersed with heavy loss. The number of soldiers killed was seventeen.
The official reports from the scene say the force now invading Matanzas numbers 9000, and that they have carried away many of their dead and wounded. The loss of the troops is stated to be insignificant. The canefields of Aguadita are burning.
HAVANA, Dec. 23.—Dispatches have been received here confirming the announcement that the famous Cuban insurgent leader Miraba has been killed. It appears that he led the attack upon the village of Vueltaas, which was held by a few Spanish soldiers, with the column of troops commanded by Major Tomas, which was sent to assist the garrison, and in the engagement which followed the insurgents lost heavily and Miraba was wounded. He died subsequently in the insurgent hospital at Sierra Cita.
TAMPA, Fla., Dec. 23.—A special courier from General Macoo's command arrived here.

THE ANAHEIM GAZETTE is much dissatisfied with the "shuffle" in the National Guard of California which leaves the Anaheim Company (Gompany G) out altogether. In gives company a first-class record and says it stood at the head of the companies in the 7th regiment. Had Company D been blotted out, we presume Pomona would have been disgruntled. He reports the Cuban army marching toward Matanzas in three columns, under Jose Lacrete and Suarez with 2,000 men, another in the north under Maceo with 3,000. The center column, under General Gomez, has 6,000 men. Each column has two field pieces of modern artillery, the extreme vanguard, 1,000 men, is commanded by Brigadier Francisco Perez, and the rear guard of 1,000, is under Quintin Bandera.
In General Gomez's first engagement at Maltioupo with Colonel Arigona, detached expressly to detain the former's march, the Spanish loss was 340 dead. Up to the time the steamer left Havana nothing had been heard of the two companies of the battalion of Canaraiss.
AN INSURGENT VICTORY.
NEW YORK, Dec. 24.—A dispatch to the Herald from Nassau, N. P., says:
Advices received here from Cuba state that a big battle has been fought in Palminto, district of Ramon de las Yagunas, between a force of 1200 Spaniards under General Camella and nearly 3000 Cubans, in which the rebels were victorious. The Cubans, it is stated, were poorly armed and equipped, but full of enthusiasm. During the battle the Cubans feigned retreat, and the government troops were led into a trap. The rebels then closed in on all sides and inflicted great slaughter upon the Spanish soldiers.

WATER DEVELOPMENT AND IRRIGATION AT RINCON.
From the Chino Champion.
Several of the residents of Rincon were in town on Tuesday, somewhat exercised over the jeopardized condition of their water rights. Some two years ago the Santa Ana and Anaheima water companies brought suit to enjoin the people along Chino creek and other streams tributary to the Santa Ana river, from diverting or using any of the water from those streams.
