Woman's Wicked Ways: Ethel Leroy, a dissolute woman, was murdered in a shocking manner in San Francisco Tuesday afternoon in a lodging-house on O'Farrell street. After a desperate struggle with Frank Larrabee, whose mistress she had been, he overpowered her and with a razor cut her throat. In the terrible struggle the woman's cheeks, neck and breast were frightfully slashed. Pushing the dying woman from him, Larrabee then drew the razor across his own throat in an attempt to end his own life. The woman very soon bled to death but Larrabee will live. The murder resulted from the woman's threat to leave him. Larrabee is an electrician who came from Chicago at the beginning of the Midwinter Fair. Henry Russel, colored, murdered his wife, Carrie, at Chicago by cutting her throat with a razor. He then ended his own life by slashing his own throat. The scene of the tragedy was in a building in the rear of No. 6 South Sheldon street. The couple lived on the second floor. About 2 p.m. Russel returned to the house and commenced quarrelling with his wife. In a short time the woman was heard screaming, and several men who went to her assistance were driven out by Russel, who threatened agger of the drugstore where he worked, on on his return to San Francisco. "What? Married on a salary of $5 a week?" "That's the exact truth." "Than you must quit your job. We thought you wore only a boy, and we can't afford to have a married man around the store at starvation wages." That was young Cook's first stroke of bad luck. His next was the loss of the friendship of his foster mother, who is greatly grieved because the young man married without her knowledge. Speaking of the romance she said: "The boy is not 18. Nearly eighteen years ago I heard my door bell ring, and when I went there I found him in a basket, and now he says he never had any parents, when I have been a mother to him all these years. He has broken my heart. He says he was raised in an orphan asylum. I did put him in the asylum for nearly two years, after the death of my husband, but for six years I toiled and worked for him and hired teachers and tutors. Two years ago he took to foolish ways and drinking, and now he runs away and does this foolish thing. He has no money, and his wife has none. They can't live on love." A Wife's Shocking Crime: St. Louis, Aug. 8.—Pred Kane, a farmer living just outside of the cast limits of East Corondellet, Ill., was murdered last night about 2 o'clock by his wife, Annie, and her paramour, George Centre, who worked for the murdered man. Just before 10 o'clock several persons heard cries and several pistol-shots. At a turn of the road, about three hundred yards from his home, they found Kane in a pool of blood and evidence that a terrible struggle had occurred. Across a corn field the struggle had been carried on, till the final blow, with a twenty-six-pound blacksmith hammer, had been dealt. It carried away the entire left part of the head as far down at the chuck bone. The bullet-wounds were enough to kill the man. The guilty pair's clothing were found hidden near the house, while the woman and her paramour were caught within a short time. done easily enough. It must be done easily enough. We have not money to buy a bushel of coal. We have not money to buy a bushel of coal. We have not money to buy a bushel of coal. We have not money to buy a bushel of coal. But that is undoubtedly what done, for it is necessary that the present population of the model town full of cheer. In fact, it is desperate. George M. Pullman is back from Rest and Newport, but he declines to view on the events which have taken place in the public mind, from which he hid away last June. His home is still by private watchmen, who lounges in the lawn and keep watch on anyone stops to glance at the abiding place president of the $36,600,000 corporation. Vice-President Wicks, the trusted ant of the "Marquis," and General Brown of the Pullman works, called Prairie Avenue mansion. They were woken by the watchmen and were so scared in conference with their chief for hours discussing the situation at the presumed that action will be determined evicting the strikers from the co- houses. The Referendum With Us We are availing ourselves of known as the referendum more liberal this State than any other State in this Method is not only applied to national amendment, where it is important but to subjects of general legislation as the refunding of the State debt building of a ferry-house in San Francisco at the last election. Nine amendments Constitution are to be submitted in number. One of them, and perhaps the most important provides an educational orientation for voters. In had been formed obedience to a strong vote cast at election in favor of such a rule. The amendment is designed to do away with recalcats growing out of the division ties. It provides for the passage of Making New Citizens The biennial rush of aliens to become citizens has just ended. The San Francisco Superior Judges have been devoting a good many hours daily for the past week asking the candidates pertinent questions. Most of the foreigners were divided into bands; each band in charge of one of its laws versed compatriots. Applicants thus in town usually attempted gib answers to the stereotyped questions propounded by the Court. The applicants who steered their own cause to citizenship were not so well drilled, as the following answers will show. "Suppose the United States should go to war with some nation," one of them was asked, "for whom would you fight?" "Garibaldi," almost shouted the applicant, his eyes blazing. "Naw, naw," hissed his sponsor, fiercely digging him in the ribs, "for zees countrie, for zees countrie." Notta for Garbaldi, you fool. "Well?" said the Court, pretending not to hear the fierce whisper, "for whom would you fight?" "Not—nota for Garbaldi." "Who is our president?" a grizzled, grimy, brown skinned fellow was asked. He pursued his brows laboriously and broke into a cold sweat. A brown-haired man plucked his sleeve and somebody whispered near his ear. His face brightened. "Pedro Scandini," he replied. "Who?" demanded the puzzled Court. Then came a buzz of explanations, out of which the information gradually developed that Scardini was president of the candidates' political club in the forty-seventh district. "Have you read the constitution?" another applicant was asked. "No speaka Kuglish," was the reply. "Ask him if he has read the constitution of the United States!" the Court repeated to a by-stander. The question was translated, and the translated reply came: "He say if you will pooish in Italia he will sometime be pleased to read, if all right." He didn't get his papers. The big rush is over for two years, as the ninety-day limit previous to the election has expired. Russel returned to the house and commenced quarreling with his wife. In a short time the woman was heard screaming, and several men who went to her assistance were driven out by Russel, who threatened to kill them if they came back. The police were notified, and Sergt. Ellwood and Officer Connell were sent to the house. When they arrived Russel had out his wife's throat from ear to ear, and taking up the dying woman in his arms bore her to the window and hurled her into the yard. He then stood at the window with a bloody razor in his hand and looked down on the apparently dying form of his wife. The desperate man drew his razor across his own throat; the first gash seemed to have no effect on him, and he again brought the weapon into play and hacked at himself until he fell dying to the floor. He expired in a short time. The woman died while being taken to the hospital. Russel had frequently threatened to kill his wife if she did not cease quarreling with him. The question was translated, and the translated reply came: "He say if you will pooish in Italia he will sometime be plea to read, if all right." He didn’t get his papers. The big rush is over for two years, as the ninety-day limit previous to the election has expired. At a turn of the road, about three hundred yards from his home, they found Kane in a pool of blood and evidence that a terrible struggle had occurred. Aerospace a corn field the struggle had been carried on, till the final blow, with a twenty-six-pound black-smith hammer, had been dealt. It carried away the entire left part of the head as far down at the cheek bone. The bullet-wounds were enough to kill the man. The guilty pair’s clothing were found hidden near the house, while the woman and her paramour were caught within a short time. Mrs. Kane and her paramour made a confession. The latter was the first to break down. He stated that a man named George Johnson had not him and given him the pistol with which he was compelled to shoot Kane. Centre then detailed practically the story of the murder as already stated. Johnson, as far as can be learned from the evidence, is Mrs. Kane, who toggled up in a pair of her husband’s trousers, is said to have wielded the hammer which smashed in the head of the murdered man. Kane’s stepson, who is not more than 12 or 14 years old, says that when the old man went away from the house, his mother and George went out together and that his mother had the hammer and a bundle. The woman at first tried to tell the Johnson-sony story, but when she heard of Centro’s confession, she abandoned that entirely and said it had all been done by Centro and that no such person as Johnson had been mixed up with the affair in any way whatever. She stoutly denied all charges of criminal intimacy between herself and Centro until she learned that Centro had owned up to it. Lynching was freely talked of by the excited neighbors, but the prisoners were safely locked up in jail. Engene Suprer of Westfield, Mass., is his first wife’s son-in-law, his present wife’s stepfather, his own son-in-law, also his own father-in-law, his ex-stepchild, brother-in-law and grandfather of his own children. He is now suing his first wife for $20,000 for alienating the affections of his second wife, who is his own wife’s daughter and his own stepdaughter. Mrs. Catherine Suprer, the defendant, was deserted by her first husband, Philip Sonn, in 1886, who left her with three children and a heart yearning for love. She met Eugene Suprer, and they were married in 1876. Suprer’s heart was too big to be filled completely by love for Mrs. Suprer, and her daughter by her first marriage capitulated him. About this time it was a merry household rendered mere so by fact that Mrs. Suprer bore three children to Suprer. Then the latter discovered that her first husband was still living and brought suit to have the marriage annulled, but it never came to trial. Finally he ran away with his wife’s daughter by the first husband and went to Westfield, Mass. Mrs. Suprer followed and brought a criminal action against him for his relations with her daughter, but he defended it by claiming that he had never been really married to her as she had a husband living at the time. The suit was dismissed and he married the daughter. She bore him three children who are thus not only brothers and sisters, but also cousins of the children by Mrs. Suprer No. 1, besides being that unfortunate lady’s grandchildren. Last January Mrs. Suprer having tired of Suprer, largely because that gentleman combined his love with frequent chastening, returned to her mother, Mrs. Suprer No. 1, and now she suits follows. All is not sorene in Redlands colored society circles. In fact, ever since Mrs. Facing made an attempt to pump cold lead into the body of D. A. Hodge other day she has kept her evil upon him and he has This state than any other State in this state may not only applied to this State but also formalized amendment where it is important but to subjects of general legislation as the refunding of the State debt at building of a ferry-house in San Felipe at last election. Nine amendments Constitution are to be submitted in berber. One of them, and perhaps most important provides an educational option for voters. In had been formed objection to a strong vote cast at election in favor of such a rule. The amendment is designed to do away with encounters growing out of the divinities. It provides for passage of laws for regulation of all schemes kind. The third exempts fruit bearing trees from taxation for after planting and grapevines for three months. The third seems to be a scheme to ask existing Constitution, which forms acquisition of real estate by Chinese firms for possession to all property kind which may have been acquired during time of adoption of this amendment. The electors will be required to make short work of the job. Provides legislative machinery for solidification of city and county governors. The sixth revives the original scheme to that is say one member from each grassional district. The seventh expands creasing the pay of legislators to $15 cents mileage and $23 for continuing penses. At present these worthy lancers receive $8 per day for sixty days compensation proposed is at the rate per month. The reasons for that eighth electors will have to find out for selves. Perhaps there is a notion that salons are better paid their devotion will not be so persistent. But many people have strong doubts on this object. The Moulton Divorce Case A suit has been brought in San Felipe in Superior Court, which is fraught interest to one of wealthiest families Northern California. Mary Ethel Muese Lafayette F. TUE 16, 1894. SNAP SHOTS AT THE NEWS. The first carload of sugar was shipped out from Chino last Wednesday evening. From this time on for the next three months a trainload will be shipped out every day. Riverside county has brought suit against San Bernardino, claiming that the amount owing to it should have been found by the commissioners in partition to be $132,000, instead of $15,000, as they reported. The jury in the Nellie Horton murder case in San Francisco brought in a verdict of acquittal, as the result of the second trial of the defendant for the murder of Charles Hagons, a telegraph operator, who had led her satray under promise of marriage, but kept putting the ceremony off until the woman became desperate and killed him. There has been a great deal of speculation as to how much it costs the Gould boys to keep a crack sailing yacht and one of the largest steam yachts afloat. It is said that since the boys left for Europe a few months ago they have drawn on the estate for $400,-000. This will seem a large amount to spend in sport, but steam yachts like the Atalanta are expensive toys and when one reckons the complement of officers and men they require to sail, the number of artists employed to navigate the Vigilant and the princely salary of Hank Haff the amount is not considered high. W. H. Thomson, secretary of the Colorado Humane Society, writing under the name of Harper Thomson, has been corresponding with W. J. Cornell of El Cajon Valley, fifteen miles from San Diego, Cal., who pretends to conduct a home for children. After a number of letters had passed, Cornell wrote: "For $10,000 we will take care of your boy, and see that he never returns to you again. In short, so hide him away that he will be as one who is dead." El Cajon Valley is a small hamlet containing only a few houses. There is no institution of any kind located there. It is an infamous scheme to get hold of money, and in some manner make away with innocent children. Only the Vigilant appeared on the line at the gun-tire last Wednesday morning for the race for the Royal Yacht squadron prize of £100 for all yachts exceeding forty-one rating, belonging to a recognized yacht club. As three competitors were necessary, the children would have presence of mind enough to crouch down under the ties. When a short distance from the children he saw the little girl rise to the ties; a little hand was stretched down toward the small sister underneath, thinking to save her and not willing to leave her, as she thought, to die. Hardly had she raised her sister from the culvert when the engine was upon them. The pilot passed over the body of the girl, the iron wheels rolling over it. The other child was lifted high in the air and fell bleeding by the side of the track. Both were killed. A new secret political order has been organized with its headquarters in Los Angeles. The objects of the order are to assist in the dissemination of certain principles of government which are laid down in the organic law, and to consolidate the voters of the nation in support of these principles. The organization in many respects is unlike any other secret order. The name of the order is the United Sous of America. The members are obliged to support the laws of the State and Nation and sustain the authorities; to oppose the election of men to office who are nominated by fraud or corrupt political bosses; to secure to every legal voter a secret ballot, to be honest counted, and to elect to office those who are honest and capable. L. M. Holt, formerly of the Riverside Press, is the national president and also founder of the order. Four hundred Coxeyites camping at Rosslyn were driven from Virginia at daybreak Saturday morning by the militia, and their huts were burned. They crossed the bridge into the District of Columbia, all other avenues being closed. All moved without a word of protest except the California men, who said they wished to show force before they stirred. A company of mulitia was marched down to the river and Gen. Anderson said: "Here is your show of force; now you must go." Not a murmer or grumble was heard. Three men too sick to walk, were removed to the hospital. It was decided that the police should take charge of the Industrials and escort them to some suitable place, most probably in Georgetown, until arrangements can be made for shipping them West. Pending a decision where to temporarily corral them the unemployed remained on the aqueduct bridge. A romantic incident occurred in Galveston. The Moulton Divorce Case A suit has been brought in San Francisco to Superior Court, which is fraught with one of the wealthiest families of western California. Mary Ethel Moulton, Lafayette F. Moulton and Jane Moulton, wife, for $50,000 for inducing their heiwi to abandon her. She claims Levi husband. Outside of this complaint story of the suit, it will be presented in trial, bids fair to develop a most in-depth case of contract marriage. Bayette Moulton, the defendant, is a big grower of Colusa, well-known about the State. His son, Levi Everett, is the husband in the case whom he sought to recover. It appears that the man who arrived at his majority a time ago, became enamored of Mary, who is a viracious and piquant beauty, the soubrette type, who has seen but been summers of Colusa. The couple together as man and wife for some years, and on January 26 last, went to a big lawyer of Colusa and had him draw a marriage contract, which they signed. He decided to make the marriage public, they contract recorded. In the loving young couple waited to from papa Moulton. They heard from and the thrillty and practical grainier declined to accept into the bosom of family as a daughter-in-law Mary Ethel, contract bride. With still less ceremony Familias Moulton took Levi, his son iriver to his wawing grain-fields, by the ten miles from San Diego, Cal., who pretends to conduct a home for children. Only the Vigilant appeared on the line at the gen-tire last Wednesday morning for the race for the Royal Yacht squadron prize of £100 for all yachts exceeding forty-one rating, belonging to a recognized yacht club. As three competitors were necessary, the event was declared off. The Britannia had been docked as the result of damage sustained by scraping the shore in the luffing match off Ventnor Monday week. As D. Clark, owner of the Satanita, has been black-balled by the Royal Yacht Squadron for refusing to sail his yacht. The club members offered to swap the rules requiring that three yachts should compete, and the Sailing Committee asked Gould to send the Vigilant over the course for half the prize. Gould declined, saying that he did not consider that to be sport. Among the United States prisoners who have just arrived at the Kings county prison in Brooklyn is John Maney, one of the most notorious train robbers in the Southwest. His sentence is fifteen years. Maney's wife has commenced suit for a divorce. Her maiden name was Serene, and when she went to Toxarkana several years ago, to claim a fortune left by her father, she met Maney, a Yale graduate, and they were married. Maney turned out a gambler and spendthrift, and separated from her some time ago, after having spent most of her fortune. She then returned to Brooklyn. After many adventures in Texas and Indian Territory, a gang held up a train and killed a man on the Southern Pacific road near Paris, Texas. They failed in securing any booty, and were recognized by the train hands. Maney was tried and convicted two months ago in Paris for participation in the crime and sentenced to fifteen years. At Ottumwa, Iowa, W. S. Jenkins, bagageman for the Barlington at the depot at Chariton, Iowa, shot his sweetheart, Julia Murphy, his sister Josie, their mother and himself. Jenkins and Josie are dead, while the mother and young sister are fatally injured. Jenkins has been devoted to Julia for five years, and Jenkins boarded there. Becoming more and more enamored each day with Miss Murphy, he became more bold in speaking out against the attentions of other men. Mrs. Murphy requested him to find another boarding house. This he did, and did not seem to feel at all hurt, but kept calling on the Murphy. No one knows why he became particularly excited the day of the killing, but he went over to the house in a bad mood. He had some words with Julia about the attentions of another man. He then drew a pistol and shot her. Turning to the mother, who rushed into the room, he shot her twice without a word, after which he stepped into the hall, where the sister stood, and shot her, killing her instantly. Jenkins bore an excellent reputation, and the general belief is that he was insane. Farmer Sunderland, residing in Henderson county, over in Hoosierdom, had an exciting experience while experimenting on the result of exploding dynamite in his@sbond in an effort to capture some of the big carp. He took a stick of the explosive, lighted a match to the fuse and pitched it into the water. He had not before discovered the presence of his faithful dog that stood by his side, eagerly watching each movement of his master. The instant Sunderland pitched the explosive into the water the dog dashed in after it, and by going under the water a ten miles from San Diego, Cal., who pretends to conduct a home for children. Farmer Sunderland, residing in Henderson county, over in Hoosierdom, had an exciting experience while experimenting on the result of exploding dynamite in his baspond in an effort to capture some of the big carp. He took a stick of the explosive, lighted a match to the fuse and pitched it into the water. He had not before discovered the presence of his faithful dog that stood by his side, eagerly watching each movement of his master. The instant Sunderland pitched the explosive into the water the dog dashed in after it, and by going under the water a short distance he seized the dynamite stick in his mouth and swam ashore. He considered it a repetition of the same sport he had often before enjoyed, and his idea was to return the object to his master. Sunderland quickly discovered that this would never do, and he ran to a fence near by, with the dog close onto him with the dangerous stuff in his mouth. John succeeded in getting on the fence, and would likely have been blown to atoms had not the explosion occurred before the dog got dangerously close. As it was a big hole was torn in the earth and the tence blown down for rods near by, but the man was not seriously injured. The dog needed no funeral, as not enough of him could be found to make a decent grease-spot. Sunderland will satisfy himself with hook and line in the future. It was nearly dark Friday evening before the frightful mass of debris occupying the ravine near Lincoln, Neb., where the Rock Island express was wrecked and burned the night before had cooled sufficiently to enable the large crowd gathered at that place in the hope of learning something of the fate of friends or relatives, to inspect the charred mass in detail, but any hope that might have been entertained of securing from the great ashpit information as to the identity of those who lost their lives, was soon blasted. The tons of water thrown on the twisted reks of the train, and the heaps of embers had been insufficient to prevent every vestige of combustible matter being destroyed. Occasionally a charred skull or a partially burned human bone was raked from the bed of the furnace, but nothing more remained to tell the tale of those who went down with the ill-fated train, and time will be required to determine just how many persons were lost in the wreck. The list of killed and injured is furnished by the Coroner swells the number of fatalities to twenty four. The facts in a most heart-rending accident, in which two children were mangled by a train on the Queen and Crescent road, have been received from Atlanta, Ga. Tilly and Lily Burgess, aged 6 and 3 years, were sent by their mother to a neighboring farmhouse on an errand. The children were on their way back. At length they came to a culvert and got down in it. Hardly had they done so when a train dashed around a curve at the rate of forty miles an hour. Engineer Elliott saw the head of one of the little girls raised above the ties, looking with helpless terror at the approaching engine. In an instant the engineer threw his lever back and did all he could to stop the engine. The distance, however, was too short and the train thundered toward the culvert. The only hope of the engineer was that she still steps without a word, altering which he stepped into the hall, where the sister stood, and shot her, killing her instantly. Jenkins bore an excellent reputation, and the general belief is that he was insane. Cobler, a well known young man of Los Angeles, was sentenced to five years in San Quentin for converting money to his own use while acting as a deputy county assessor. The sentence is a terrible blow to Cobler, who has her heretofore considered his associations too good and his friends too powerful to admit of such a fall. The end of his career shows, however, how easy it is for a man to be deceived in claiming immunity from the usual penalties for crime. Cobler was what is called a good fellow, free with his money and too free in his libations, who doubtless thought that any little peacockloes and peculiations while holding an office of trust would be condoned if ever found out. It is hard on the victim, but healthful for society for such an illusion to be dispelled by the dull thud of the hand of justice upon the criminal. A forty years romance has culminated in the marriage of Mrs. Emily Graham and O.S.Ward at Englewood; Illinois. The groom has seen seventy-five winteres and the bride forty-seven. Ward is a wealthy merchant of Lawndale and Mrs.Graham during her visits among the people of Englewood in the capacity of a trained nurse, has made a wide circle of friends. The story of the three of them is full of interest. Years ago, when he was a young man, Ward was engaged in business at Seneca, Kans. One day he made the acquaintance of a little girl in short frocks. He was of a genial disposition and the friendship became fast and firm. Many times he took child upon his knee and told her stories; little thinking that she would one day, nearly a half century later, be his wife. Mr.Ward married and went to Chicago, and went into business and rapidly accumulated a considerable amount of property. Emily grew up and married, and in the course of a few years she, too, made Chicago her home. While she was yet in prime of life her husband died, and being thrown upon her own resources she became a nurse. During all of their residence in Chicago the acquaintanceship of Mrs.Graham and Ward was continued. Seven years ago Ward fell ill and Mrs.Graham was immediately sent for. Nursed Mrs.Ward for many weeks and was at her bedside when she passed away. Since that time she have had many pleasant meetings, and finally moved to the surprise of their friends, they announced that they would soon be married.
