TRAPS AND SNARES. CONTRIVANCES THAT SHOW WHAT A GENIUS THE YANKEE IS. You Would Call Most of the Inventions Absurdities, and Yet They Are Useful—Devices For Poisoning Pests—Rattraps of Many Kinds. American invention has given birth to no end of freaks, which have been embalmed at the patent office in order that they may not perish. Some of the queerest of them are devices for entrapping beasts, bugs, fishes and even human beings. What, for example, could be funnier that the notion of using imitation flowers with poisoned honey to attract noxious insects? The artificial blossoms, each containing a small quantity of sugary liquid properly prepared, are to be fastened to twigs. Months of destructive species sip the deadly nectar and die. A more elaborate device of a similar description is intended for the protection of apple trees. It is a tin can covered as to its upper half with luminous paint. On the outside of the lower half apple blossoms are represented with the same sort of paint. Inside of the receptacle is a small quantity of cider. The can is to be hung on a branch of an apple tree at night. Insects, attracted by the pictured flowers, light upon the can. The smell of the cider induces them to enter through holes provided for that purpose. They then drop down into the cider and are drowned. Yet it is not always easy to distinguish between a crank idea and a useful discovery. The poisoned counterfeits of flowers above described are said to work very well. Many years ago a man got a patent for a method of killing bugs on trees by inclosing the whole tree in a sort of balloon of canvas, into which an asphyxiating gas was to be poured for the purpose of suffocating the insects. Everybody thought he was a lunatic. But now that his patent has run out the merits of the plan have suddenly obtained appreciation, and its adoption is alleged to have saved the orange growing industry in California. Several kinds of luminous baits for fish have been patented. One of these is a minnow of hollow glass coated on the inside partly with a solution of gold or silver, and partly with luminous paint. The result is a very brilliant object in the water, calculated to attract any predacious creature with fins. Another interesting contrivance is for making frog bait more seductive. The jerkling of the line equipped with this device causes the frog's legs to move as if he were small bullet wounds. The Deadly Effects of Modern Projectiles Upon the Human Body. The celebrated English surgeon, Professor Victor Horsley, read a very interesting paper before the Royal institution on the effect of modern small projectiles. In the course of his remarks he said: "Some people seem to think that a small bullet at a very high speed will pierce the tissues of the body without doing much general damage. This, however, is erroneous. The bullet hurries forward with it particles of the substance through which it is passing, and thus practically becomes a larger projectile. If a bullet be fired through a book, it cuts out disks of increasing diameter as it traverses the pages. Hence, too, it is plain that the greater section area the greater the damage. As to the heating of the bullet, it has certainly been much exaggerated, and its effects, if indeed it has any, may be safely neglected. "The physical constitution of a body has a most important bearing upon the behavior of a bullet entering it. Why does a bullet of certain size and traveling at a certain rate simply perforate some substances, such as wood or iron, while in others, such as clay, brain, etc., it exercises a bursting and disruptive action? The answer is quite simple; the destructive effects vary directly as the viscosity of the body. "This was established by some remarkable researches on the effects of bullets on soft tissues made by Huguer after he had observed the results of the wounds inflicted in the fighting in Paris in 1848. He suggested, from observations made on certain dead organs, such as lungs, that the reason of the great lateral disturbance was that the tissues contained water in large quantity, and that the energy of the moving projectile being imparted to the particles of water caused the dispersion of these in a hydrodynamic fashion. "This suggestion was shown to be correct by Kocher in 1874-6. If a shot be fired through two tin canisters of equal size, one full of dry lint and the other of wet, it will simply perforate the former, but cause the latter to burst explosively. In the same way shots fired into dough have more or less disruptive effect, according to the percentage of water in the dough, and in general the more fluid the substance the greater the destruction. "Now, in life the brain is a more or less fluid body, though in a state of rigor mortis it is practically a solid, owing to coagulation of the blood and protoplasm. Hence a shot fired into the skull must have a disruptive effect and tend to burst it." Notice is hereby given that pursuant to legislation duly adopted by the Board of Directors, the Anachel Irigation District at its unheld on the 10th day of July, 1894, a specification will be held on the 9th day of August, 1894. Commencing at one hour after sunrise and timing through said day until sunset at day, for the purpose of submitting and attaching there shall be submitted to the qualification shall be levied for the purpose of raising thousand dollars to be applied to the payee—the existing obligations of said district—the purpose of paying the expenses of payments for the disorganization of said district to petition heretofore made by me of the hapless doctor or so called individual which he calls shall contain words," Assessment—Yes," or "Assessment No." That said election will be held in five several precincts in this district—the places respectively as follows: to wit: In Precinct No. 1.-At D. J. Yorba's D. J. Yorba, Inspector; Frank Buther and Herlin, Judges. In Precinct No. 2.-At the Placement house; A. T. Pendleton, Inspector; Ben K. and A. S. Bradford, Judges. The jerking of the line equipped with this device causes the frog's legs to move as if he were swimming. Contrivances for catching insects are more numerous than any others. One of them is a furnace for slaughtering potato bugs. To begin with, a deep and wide furrow is to be plowed all around an infested field. Through this trench a smooth log is dragged to make the surface hard and smooth. The bugs in migrating to other grounds are unable to scale the trench, and the furnace, which is a cylinder of iron filled with fuel, is drawn along the furrow and destroys them. Other old devices are cartridges intended to be inserted in the mouths of ant holes and to be fired, thus communicating stifling vapors to the subterranean chambers, also many kinds of lamps for attracting and burning up the moths of various worms in cotton fields. There is a toy pistol for insects, which sucks them in when he trigger is pulled. An ingenious westerner has invented a trap for catching the hornfly which is such an enemy to cattle in some parts of the country. It consists most importantly of a great frame to which brush is attached in such a manner that when the beasts walk through, eager as they always are to scratch themselves, the flies will be scraped from their bodies by the branches. Finally the frame is closed up by means of doors, and the captured insects are destroyed. Nearly everybody has heard of the gold tapeworm trap, which the patient swallows. Bedbug traps are of several varieties, all of them being intended to afford attractive hiding places for these blood suckers and to be burned or scaled out afterward. Much ingenuity has been expended in rattrapa. Some of them are so elaborate that no full witted rodent would go near them. One requires Mr. Rat to come in through a door, which drops behind and makes him a prisoner. Seeing a bright light above, he ascends a flight of little steps and trots across a small plank that is so nicely adjusted as to balance that his weight causes it to tip and throw him into a tank of water. Another contrivance consists of a double chamber. One chamber has a glass end, through which Mr. Rat sees two or three imitation rats having a nice time with a bit of cheese. Wishing to join them, he runs around the box, gets into the other chamber and is caught. There are a number of devices which employ mirrors for the purpose of luring the rat to his fate. He mounts on top of a barrel and sees a toothsome piece of cheese. As he approaches it he beholds another rodent—in reality his own reflection in a piece of looking glass comes for the choice from the size, one full of dry lint and the other of wet, it will simply perforate the former, but cause the latter to burst explosively. In the same way shots fired into dough have more or less disruptive effect, according to the percentage of water in the dough, and in general the more fluid the substance the greater the destruction. Now, in life the brain is a more or less fluid body, though in a state of rigor mortis it is practically a solid, owing to coagulation of the blood and protoplasm. Hence a shot fired into the skull must have a disruptive effect and tend to burst it. The Rough Hark of Trees. The practical cultivator understands that nature makes provision for getting rid of the bark of trees as the trunk increases in size. On the growth of the past season may be seen small olive spots. These are formations of cork. From year to year, in subsequent development, these little patches spread, really eating their way through the bark. This is the provision which nature makes for finally rifting the bark in each species of plant. These cork cells have their own special lines of development, and this is the reason why each kind of tree has its own particular bark. The characteristics are so prominent that clever observers can select different kinds of trees by their bark even at midnight. As it is the evident intention of nature to get rid of old bark, it is a great help to the tree to assist nature in this respect, and any washes or treatment which aids the plant in getting rid of it is a practical advantage. Soapy water washes or lye water is useful, and even scraping has been found of great advantage. In a rough sort of way, lime wash is frequently used, the only objection being the white and glaring color. It is, however, the cheapest and the best of all bark treatment. Meehan’s Monthly. All In One Breath. The Rev. Andrew Jackson Potter, the gentleman who arose from behind a pulpit in Uvalde, Tex., several years ago, with two big six shooters in his hands, and informed the audience, mostly composed of the toughest of toughs, who had been in the habit of running every minister of the gospel who came there out of town with rotten eggs, or escorting him out to the suburbs on a three cornered pole, that if there was any flop cared, swallow mouthed galot in that audience who had the audacity to presume that he wore a big enough shirt to put him out of a pulpit to step forth and take the hot medicine, or, on the other hand, to keep his bazoo closed, and also wound up that with the help of God and those two forty-five he held in his hands he proposed to preach to that people that day, has announced himself a candidate for sheriff and tax collector of Tom Green county.—Ozona Courier. Unsuspected Sources of Disease. Recent investigations have brought out the fact that there are many cases of severe neuralgia caused by abnormal conditions of the nasal passages. In several instances there have been found enlargements of the bony structure or hard lumps of diseased tissue pressing size. L. H. Another contrivance for the purpose of luring the rat to his fate. He mounts on top of a barrel and sees a toothsome piece of cheese. As he approaches it he beholds another rodent—in reality his own reflection in a piece of looking glass—coming for the cheese from the opposite direction. He makes a dash to get there first, and a pivoted board drops him into the cask, which is half full of water. Rats will swim for a long time, so one humanitarian has patented a water trap with little shelves around the edge and just above the surface. On the shelves are placed small lead weights, with fishhooks hanging from them. The captured rat in trying to escape grasps one of the hooks, gets it fastened in his mouth, dislodges the piece of lead and is carried to the bottom by the latter. Sparrow trape are of many different kinds. Most of them invite the birds to walk in through a door which drops behind them, making them prisoners. When next seen in the restaurants, they are reedbirds on toast. —Philadelphia Times. Lightning Dissipators. A good many years ago some one advanced the idea that a wire netting spread over the roof of a house and properly anchored in good conducting soil is an effectual bar to injury by lightning. The claim is that there is what is called a state of electrical stress. This is broken by the flash that desconds through an electric air column that extends from the clouds to the earth. By the use of copper latticework, with upright points placed upon roofs, the electric current is attracted, carried through the metal conductors and safely conveyed into the earth without doing any injury whatever. It is, however, of the utmost importance that the anchorage be of the proper sort, as upon this depends the safety of the dwelling. —New York Ledger. Selfish Opposition. Especially in those women who are always at work upon public opinion by letters, speeches and writings does opposition to woman suffrage seem selfish and narrow. They exercise the largest liberty of affecting the public for themselves, but they would deny to the masses of women even the secret ballot. Unsuspected Sources of Disease. Recent investigations have brought out the fact that there are many cases of severe neuralgia caused by abnormal conditions of the nasal passages. In several instances there have been found enlargements of the bony structure or hard lumps of diseased tissue pressing against certain nerves and causing the most exacerbating pain. Removal of these has resulted in complete cure, although there have been returns of the growths after the first operation. Persons who habitually suffer from pains in the head should have their conditions carefully diagnosed. Long continued suffering not infrequently brings about protracted and incurable mental and nervous disorders. —New York Ledger. "Mrs. Tipps." Chicago has a federation of women's clubs numbering 23 organizations. One of these is called the Ohio club and is interested in almost everything under the sun. It has a peculiar rule to the effect that the president may address any member whose name she forgets as "Mrs. Tipps." —Chicago Correspondent. SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAILWAY TIME TABLE.
