SILVER REPEAL BILL PASSED
Silver purchases by the government ceased on Thursday last. The purpose for which Cleveland called Congress in extraordinary session was accomplished at 4:25 that afternoon, when he affixed his signature to the bill to repeal unconditionally the purchasing clause of the Sherman law. Only 27 men could be rallied for the last stand by the silver leaders. Their small following might have succeeded had they been led by experienced and skillful parliamentary tacticians. Neither Bryan nor Snodgrass, his lieutenant, is well versed in parliamentary procedure, and when thrown off their guard by a momentary distraction, they exposed their flank by failing to follow one filibustering motion with another, Speaker Crisp overwhelmed them by putting the pending motion to order the previous question. It carried with a roar. The filibusters had been caught napping, and nothing remained for them except to submit. For thirty minutes, under the rule, followed a rattle of oratory amid great confusion and excitement.
At its conclusion a vote was taken on pass, and such a delegation visited Los Angeles, and was given 100 pounds of bacon, sacks of potatoes, beans and coffee, all of which was conveyed to their camping ground in express wagons. The Southern Pacific officials permit them to ride on freight trains. Their appearance and orderly conduct enlist general sympathy, and their wants are being supplied. They made a stop to secure provisions to carry them across the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico.
CONGRESS ADJOURNS.
The Senate passed the House joint resolution for final adjournment at 3 p'clock Friday afternoon, and at that hour the extra session closed. The resolution was not passed without opposition. Coke, Dolph, Harris, Call, Berry, Mills, Allen and Peffer spoke against adjournment, as there was important business which ought to be transacted promptly. Allen declared the Populists were prepared for work. They were in Congress to assist in passing a proper tariff bill and enacting other needed legislation.
Cockrell said it was futile to attempt to keep a quorum in the Senate till opening the regular session. Gray agreed with him.
Cullom said he would vote for the resolution because he believed a majority desired to adjourn, and added if Congress would, before adjourning, announce to the country it did not intend to either repeal the election law or the tariff law it would be doing a very good piece of work.
Blackburn favored the resolution, which was then passed.
The House bill in aid of the World's Fair prize-winners exhibition to be held in New York city was then passed.
The clock was turned back six minutes in order to allow the Senate to complete its business, at the conclusion of which it also adjourned sine die. The adjournment defeated the deficiency bill and other pending measures.
The Senate adjourned without confirming the nomination of Hornblower to the U. S. Supreme Bench. This has the effect of rejection. The President, therefore, will be compelled to send in his name again or nominate a new man. The President this afternoon signed the New York World's Fair found near the body, from which the body had been burned, save a little in one o'clock which showed it to have been new burned. This key fitted the valise chased by the other man, and his key to the frame found near the body. The hinge on the frame had not been soiled from Potter, for he had left home but a wee fore the body was found. He stated ten days before the finding of the body heard a dog howling, and, going to theroyo, found that it had dug into a hole and imprisoned itself. Thinking it could dig out easily he left it. The day he heard the dog still howling and dug it out. It was in the hole made that Potter's body was placed, there found nine days later.
As Potter had purchased a ticket atton for the north (which ticket has been taken up by the railroad), the quarries: How came Potter to be in the horborof Arlington, where the body found? The following very plausible thing is advanced: Potter had a lot of goats; he wanted to sell. He was starting for north with about $2,500 in money with Some one knew these facts, and, when ter was about to board the train, told that he knew of a man who would purchase his goats and pay cash for them if he sold at once. The two then took them to Arlington, and started in the direction herders' camp, and, when part there, the murder was committed. There where the body was found lies between station and the herders' camp. The dence given together with what was sented before was considered by Mrs. Potter was made administratrix property of Charles Potter, deceased.

ARMIES AT CHICKAMAUGA.
The terrific nature of the great struggle at Chickamauga may be illustrated by the record of the Twenty-first Ohio. In the course experienced and skillful parliamentary tacticians. Neither Bryan nor Snodgrass, his lieutenant, is well versed in parliamentary procedure, and when, thrown off their guard by a momentary distraction, they exposed their flank by failing to follow one filibustering motion with another, Speaker Crisp overwhelmed them by putting the pending motion to order the previous question. It carried with a roar. The filibusters had been caught napping, and nothing remained for them except to submit. For thirty minutes, under the rule, followed a rattle of oratory amid great confusion and excitement. At its conclusion a vote was taken on Bland's free coinage substitute. The majority against it was 73.
Then came the final vote on concurring in the Senate amendments. The vote stood 183 for concurrence and 94 against.
When the original bill passed the House August 28th the vote stood 201 to 100, so although the total final vote was smaller, the proportion was practically the same.
The final vote was taken at 2:50 p.m. The bill was engrossed immediately, and 20 minutes later, at 3:10, the formal announcement was made to the Senate that its amendment had been agreed to by the House. The bill was hurriedly enrolled and at 3:30 presented to Speaker Crisp for his signature. A messenger carried it to the State where it was signed two minutes later by Vice-President Stevenson.
Chairman Pearson, of the committee on enrolled bills, with the measure under his arm, entered a carriage awaiting him and drove rapidly to the White House. The President had been kept duly advised of the progress of events. Indeed he manifested so much interest in the vote in the House that at his request a duplicate of the names who voted for and against its concurrence was made soon after the roll call was completed and this list was lying on his desk when Pearson arrived with the bill. Secretary Carlisle, Attorney-General Olney and Private Secretary Thurber were present. After felicitating each other for a few moments over the victory that had been achieved, the President took up the engrossed copy of the bill and read it aloud. Then picking up a quill pen he affixed his autograph at 4:25, and thus 85 days, 4 hours and 25 minutes after the extraordinary session was convened the remedy for the financial distress which Cleveland demanded was applied.
An analysis of the vote shows that 124 Democrats, 68 Republicans and one Populist (Cannon of California) voted for concurrence, and 70 Democrats, 15 Republicans and 9 Populists against the motion.
The following voted for the Bland free coinage substitute and also for concurrence: Alderson, Black (Ga.) Brookshire, Donovan, Edmunds (Va.) Geary, Holman, Richardson (Mich.) Swanson, Marshall, Turpin, Post and Tyler, while Neall, Weaver and Kyle, who voted for the free coinage substitute, did not vote on the final vote.

ARMIES AT CHICKAMAUGA.
The terrific nature of the great struggle at Chickamauga may be illustrated by the record of the Twenty-first Ohio. In the course of the battle that regiment fired 43,500 rounds of fixed ammunition and fought till its last shot was expended. It suffered a loss of one officer and fifty men killed, and three officers and ninety-eight men were wounded, yet even such magnificent bravery as its men exhibited could not suffice to give victory to the Union arms.
The losses of Rosecrans army in killed, wounded and missing were over 16,000 men. The losses of Bragg seem to have been at least as heavy, for there was terrific slaughter during his desperate attempts to drive Thomas from Horsehoe Ridge. We we consider as accurate the Federal estimate of the Confederate loss and the Confederate estimate of the Federal loss the figures would be very greatly increased.
Deserving Praise.
We desire to say to our citizens, that for years we have been selling Dr. King's New Discovery for consumption, Dr. King's New Life Pills, Bucklen's Arnica Salve and Electric Bitters, and have never handled medicines that sell as well, or that have given such universal satisfaction. We do not hesitate to guarantee them every time, and we stand ready to refund the purchase price if satisfactory results do not follow their use. These remedies have won their great popularity purely on their merits. W. M. Higgins, druggist.
Three hundred and fifty unemployed men arrived in Colton on Saturday on their way to New Orleans, where they expect to find work on the levees. They came from San Francisco and vicinity, their numbers being augmented by accessions along the route. They are well organized into companies, with captains and regular roll calls; those officers serve two meals each day, all shiring alike when they have anything to eat. They secure food by sending delegates to the authorities of the cities through which they employments, and assemble in our usual places of worship, where we may recall all that God has done for us, and where, from grateful hearts, our united tribute of praise and song may reach the throne of grace. Let the reunion of kindred and the social meeting of friends lend cheer and enjoyment to duty, and let the generous gifts of charity for the relief of the poor and needy prove the sincerity of our thanksgiving.
(Signed)
Grover Cleveland.

THE STRANGE CASE OF MR. POTTER OF RIVERSIDE.
The efforts of Mrs. Amanda Potter to establish judicially that the body of the murdered man found near Arlington station in Riverside county was the corpse of her husband, the missing San Jacinto rancher, have been successful. Judge Noyes last week handed down a decision stating that further proof must be made before he would grant Mrs. Potter letters of administration.
Potter, who disappeared mysteriously last March, left property worth about $5,000 and land in Coos county, Or., worth $20,000. Mrs. Potter's claim that the Arlington corpse was that of her husband has not been contested, but her proofs of identity were not of the strongest.
The matter of hearing further proof came up in the Superior Court last Thursday, and very strong circumstantial evidence was produced. The new evidence was such as to leave little doubt but that the corpse found near Arlington last April was that of Potter, and letters of administration were granted Mrs. Potter. The principal witness in the production of new testimony was D. W. Johnson of San Jacinto. He testified that in company with the Coroner and others he viewed the body when it was exhumed, and that he found the following distinguishing marks, having been first told by Mrs. Potter that they were possessed by her husband: The back teeth were gone but the front ones were good. The lower front teeth were much worn upon the left side from continually carrying a pipe there; the eye teeth were very sharp; the beard was of the peculiar reddish-brown color described; the end of the middle finger of the right hand was gone; and the first joint had ossified, because of injury received when the end was crushed, making necessary the amputation. The razor found near the body was identified as the one Potter used, or just like it. The pouch of plug-cut tobacco was such as he used, a package of which he purchased before leaving home. Before leaving he purchased a tan-colored valise, eighteen inches long, for $275, and another party purchased one like it from the same store at the same time. The valise key found in the pocket of the corpse fitted the frame of a valise

The financial interest of the government and commercial industrial industry of the people ought to be kept entirely by governmental reform will not be simply outrageous that business cannot enter into arrangements for development of needed industries on scale without incurring the danger that clique of amateur statesmen and their论家 at Washington will abound power of the government to turn this side down. NEWS IN BRIEF.
The President has signed the bill extending for six months the time in which Chinese may register under the Gaury law.
Three Los Angeles mashers received a wholesome lesson a few days ago. They were in the habit of annoying young women in the park, and Sunday they addressed some remarks to ladies whose escorts were near. A trio of battered and dejected dudes called at a drug store a little later.
The repeal of the Sherman act knocked silver to 31½d in London and depressed all Eastern exchanges. Rupee paper is 66¢. Har gold is a trifle less in demand. There were immense realizations in London on American shares, but the operators were inclined to buy again, seeing New York was taking stock freely.
The California State Fruit Growers' convention will hold its next annual session at Los Angeles on the 21st, 22d, 23d and 24th instants. Among the subjects to be discussed are co-operation among fruit growers, auction sales of fruit, transportation facilities and rates of freight, insect pests, tree diseases, and floral and forest culture.
Sells Bros., the circus men, have brought suit in Chicago against the province of New South Wales for $500,000 damages, and have attached all the property of that province at the World's Fair. The action grows out of an act of the New South Wales authorities three years ago in quarantining their outfit when they attempted to land there on the ground of glanders among the circus horses. Nearly half of the horses were killed.
Owing to the necessity of transporting a large amount of bullion from the assay office at New York to the mint at Philadelphia, and gold and silver bullion from the mint at Carson City to San Francisco, as well as the increased deposits of bullion at minor assay offices, it will be necessary to obtain an appropriation for defraying the expenses. Secretary Carlisle has sent to the Senate a request that $15,000 be appropriated immediately for the purpose.
The Bank of England has reduced the price for American double eagles to 76s. 9d. The meaning of this action is interpreted here as a move on its part to protect its supply of sovereigns in view of the threatened withdrawal of gold from the bank in the immediate future for shipment to the United States, which London seems to consider certain despite the fact that the current rate of exchange does not admit of a profit on such transactions.

The cruiser Boston, now in the dry dock at the Mare Island navy yard, was virtually put out of commission last Thursday afternoon, and in accordance with the instructions of Secretary of the Navy Herbert the crew of the cruiser were transferred to the receiving ship Independence. The work of removing the stores and furniture having been completed, the crew will remain quartered on board the receiving ship until the arrival of the new cruiser Olympia; when they will be placed on that ship for duty. According to the present programme mapped out by the commandant at the navy yard, the Boston was officially put out of commission last Friday, and all the officers how on the ship were detached and ordered to their homes on waiting orders. The hull of the cruiser will receive several coats of antifouling paint before leaving the dock. On completion of a few minor repairs in the engine-room of the Ranger she will be reported to Washington and authority asked to make a regular trial trip. From the brief trial had last week Chief Engineer Kutz feels confident that the existing difficulties have been overcome and that the Ranger will now attain a speed of over ten knots. The Ranger's shaft has been taken out and strengthened. It is understood at the navy yard that the trial of the Ranger will take in a few days.
The commissioners appointed to settle the financial balance between San Bernardino and Riverside counties have been unable to do anything, pending the adjustment of the dispute arising over the boundary line between the two counties. Riverside Commissioners Wise and North employed the County Surveyor of Riverside county to run a line, which he did. Thereupon Wise and North called upon the other commissioners, in writing, to hold a meeting, and proceed at once to award Riverside county her pro rata of county money, and of the cost of county buildings. The other commissioners at once employed Col. Fred Perria to run a county line, and he found that the Riverside surveyor had placed the initial point out of the true position, thereby giving at the other end a large territory of valuable land to Riverside county, together with one mile of railroad. The Riverside County Surveyor now acknowledges his error. When the boundary line is completed and agreed upon, the commissioners say they will proceed to act, and not before, as without it no balance can be made, except approximately.
Many Congressmen at Washington have received a card from the American Protective Association, whose methods in elections in Michigan and elsewhere were so severely attacked in Congress a few days ago, setting forth its objects. The card declares it is non-sectarian and non-partisan, composed only of true Americans, regardless of nationality, for the purpose of purifying politics; attacking no man's religion, as long as he does not make it an element in politics; that its aim is to preserve in the government the principles of the Declaration of Independence against the encroachments of all foreign influences; that it regals all religio political organizations as enemies to civil and religious liberty; that it is unwise to give political or military power to men who owe support or allegiance to any foreign power political or ecclesiastical; that it favors one general, unsectarian free school system, and opposes the use of public funds for sectarian purposes; favors the enactment of laws to protect American laborers from influences of pauper and criminal labor sent here by European societies, but is not opposed to honest, educated immigrants who are ready to become genuine American citizens.
The article discusses Van Doren's involvement in a legal case where he was arrested for his arrest and later tried in a court case. It mentions that he was denied bail after being held there during Heath's trial.

The new Cunard steamer Campania made its last trip over in 5 days, 12 hours and 7 minutes, beating the best previous eastward record, that of her sister ship Lucania by an hour and twenty-three minutes. The Campania is now queen of the seas, holding both the eastward and westward records, the latter being 5 days, 13 hours and 30 minutes. A remarkable feature of the last passage is the fact that the Campania beat the westward record which had heretofore been the shortest. It is believed she will soon lower the westward record still further.
Senator Stewart has come to the front with a bill for the free coinage of silver, thus confirming his statement made in the Senate, that the light for silver is to be continued. The bill prescribes the weight of silver coins which are to be issued upon the basis of a ratio of 16 to 1. Under provisions of the bill holders of silver bullion may deposit it at the mint and receive in exchange silver dollars or treasury notes. These treasury notes are to be redeemable in silver coin only, which is a change from the usual form, which requires their redemption in either silver or gold.
It is stated that a letter written by Henry Planz, the young brewer whose body was found hanging to a tree in San Jose about a year ago, has been brought to light, which clears up the mystery which has surrounded the young man's death. The letter was written to a young lady who rejected Planz and states that Planz was about to escape from his troubles. The letter implores the young lady to keep its contents a secret unless some one was finally convicted of Planz's murder. This letter confirms the theory of many who knew Planz, that he being crossed in love affair and about to lose his position in the brewery, committed suicide to escape from his troubles.
The Populists in Congress are elated over the prospective result of the fight for unconditional repeal. They claim that it will mass the advocates of free silver in the South and West under their banner, and they say they expect to capture the Presidency in 1896, and are already seriously discussing candidates. There is a strong sentiment in favor of Jerry Simpson, and Peffer has a following, but Allen of Nebraska, who held the Senate fifteen hours, seems to have charmed members of his party in the House to such an extent that he is now enjoying a Presidential boom. Watson of Georgia is spoken of for Vice-President.

The celebrated Montana-silver statue has been shipped from Chicago to New York. The news that Ada Rehan's counterfeit in silver was en route spread far and wide, and while passing through the Montezuma Swamp, near Rochester, the highwaymen boarded the train. The men jumped on the platform and attempted to force the car open where the statue lay.The messenger on the train was about to open the door of the express car when the engineer prevented him.The robbers thus baffled, sprang off the train and made no further attempt to steal the statuewhich was, tayethe least,a very heavy load.Withthe statue traveled Vice-President Higgins.ex-Gov.Hauser and W.A Clarke of the Montana Statue Committee.
