Thackeray and the Men of Today.
"A gentleman by the name of Thackray, who once wrote some books," defines a gentleman as "one having high aims." Judged by this standard, my happy friend, "where are we?" Most of us are absorbed in a desire to wear good clothes, to own horses or boats, to go to races and bet, to drink all the new combinations of abominable stiffs, to go to comic opera and get up an affair with a chorus girl. These are our "high aims." Heaven save the mark! I know of a man who the other night robed himself in a flowing silk and did a serpentine dance. Fancy it—a man! Truly this is the day of vaudeville. We find the boneless man more interesting than Hamlet, and we prefer "Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ay" ladies to the tragedienne. Our pianos are loaded with concert hall classics of the Daddy Wouldn't Buy Me Bow Wow" order. To have the honor of the acquaintance of one of the painted ladies of the ballet is to occupy a position of enviable distinction, and to be a real stage door Johnny" is better than to be the writer of many books.
Dear Mr. Thackeray, you really must have been mistaken about those "high aims." We are quite sure we are all gentlemen, and you know you really couldn't call our aspirations and longings "high aims." Let me place you right. The true gentleman is he who wears the most swagger clothes, who talks in the most exaggerated way, who can drink and bet and swear, who can most recklessly squander his (or somebody else's) money, and whose intimate associates are the ladies of the chorus and the gentlemen of the turf. Oh, yes, Mr. Thackeray, you were quite wrong, or else—we are. Which?—Harper's Bazar.
The Peanut Industry.
The "goober" industry of Norfolk is unique. Here is a little city in Virginia that has become the greatest distributing center of peanuts in the world. A peanut is a pretty small item, but an annual crop of something like 5,000,000 bushels, worth millions of dollars, makes a pretty big item.
The demand for goobers has doubled within the last five years, and the supply does not yet fill the growing demand. New people know the curious uses to which the goober has been put in trade quite of late years. No other single plant raised in this country is used in so many different ways. The Chinese say the coconut palm has as many useful properties as there are days in the year. The goober is not so universal as that, but it has as many valuable qualities as there are days in the week. The solid part of the nut is peculiarly nutritive and supplies fruit and food for many families. The vines make fine fodder, some say as good as clover hay, while hogs fatten on what is left in the fields.
Dakota's Great Wheatfields.
A large party of foreign agricultural commissioners to—the World's fair, under the escort of Governor Shortridge of North Dakota, saw some harvesting operations in that great wheat country a few days ago which must have opened their eyes, accustomed as they are to the small acreages of Europe. Driving through a vast wheatfield bounded only by the horizon, they beheld as many as 48 twine binders moving in a steady procession half a mile long and cutting great swaths of grain.
They were told by the owner of this farm that in harvesting time he cut a square mile of grain in a day and employed 80 men to shock it up. At noon the visitors sat down to a prairie chicken dinner on a mammoth scale, which excited their surprise almost as much as the prairie acres on which they gazed.
Afterward they visited the famous Dalrymple farm, covering 54,000 acres of ground, and saw numerous thrashing machines making their inroads into the stacks of wheat which it required 180 twine binders from two to three weeks to cut.—New York Post.
A Just but Lentent Judge.
An unusual incident occurred in the city court at Savannah a few days ago. Judge McDonnell was targly in putting in an appearance, for which he finned himself $10 and then promptly remitted the fine. His honor went to see his physician to have his arm, which he recently injured, dressed, and the doctor kept him a little longer than he had counted on. When he entered the courtroom, the hands on the clock above the judge's desk pointed to just 10 minutes past 10.
Judge McDonnell took note of the fact and said: "In accordance with the rules of this court every officer who comes in late is subject to a fine. The clerk will therefore enter a fine of $10 against the court for tardiness, to be paid into the registry of the court. Owing to the fact, however, that this is the first time this thing has happened, and also that the court had to be detained in order to have its arm dressed, the clerk will remit the fine."—Baltimore Sun.

Bullet Waves.
One of the interesting results of the recent experiments in England in photographing flying bullets has been to show that the disturbance in the air travels faster than the bullet itself.
The photographs exhibit air waves in advance of the bullets, even when the latter are moving faster than the velocity of sound.
In one case where the bullet was moving considerably faster than sound travels in the air it was preceded by an atmospheric disturbance which, at the moment the photograph was taken, was half an inch in advance of the point of the bullet. Even when the bullets were traveling four times as fast as sound the atmospheric disturbance kept ahead of them.—Youth's Companion.
A New Telephone.
Interesting experiments were made last week with a new telephone over 40 miles of ordinary telegraph wire between Saratoga and Albany. The new telephone is the invention of William Marshall of New York and is entirely novel in construction and principle. No magnet coil or diaphragm is used, the telephone being dependent for its working upon the acoustic interpretation of electric pulsations of sheets of ordinary tin foll and paper arranged as a condenser. By means of the system conversation can be carried on at a distance of 500 miles over a telegraph wire on which a telegraphic message is being sent at the same time.—Boston Transcript.
An Ascending Meteor.
Professor von Nisil has been investigating the path of the meteor that appeared July 7, 1892, and was seen both in Austria and Italy. The result of this computation has shown that undoubtedly the path of the meteor at the latter end of its course was directed upward. The length of its path measured 1,110 kilometers from its nearest approach to the earth surface (68 kilometers above the surface) to the point where it disappeared, which was at a height of 158 kilometers. This is about the first time that the path of a rising meteor has been so accurately investigated.—Nature.
A Silk Samaritan.
A landlord in Orchard street was ejecting a female tenant for nonpayment of rent when a passerby inquired the cause of the trouble, and being told said that he would not see a woman turned out of her home and that he would pay the rent. He handed $100 to the landlord, who took four months' rent out of it and gave the balance ($32) back to the good

In all the higher schools and training colleges the compulsory studies hitherto have included two modern languages, one of which must be German. This order is now annulled.
Two modern languages will be the rule as before, and one will remain at the option of the pupil, but as to the other he can choose between German and English. Moreover, the time given to the study of German is reduced by two hours, while that devoted to English is increased by the same length of time, and pupils will begin their English lessons one year earlier than hitherto.—London News.
A Phosphorescent Tree.
A large willow tree on the bank of Tan run in Frankford fell over recently and developed into a natural curiosity. The inside of the tree, which has been dead for several years, was found to be a mass of phosphorescent light known as fox fire. As darkness came on and the curious phenomenon was discovered, hundreds of people gathered, and as many as could get around the old trunk went to work with hatchets and knives to secure specimens. Soon the ground around was strewn with small chips, which glittered like so many little stars.—Philadelphia Record.
A Live Toad In A Hallstone.
A hailstorm visited Pawtucket about 10 o'clock Saturday evening, such as has not visited this vicinity for years, if within the memory of man. One woman picked up a large hallstone and allowed it to melt in her hand. She thought something was inside the little piece of frozen rain, but was surprised to find when all had melted a little live toad or frog in her hand. There is a quite general belief that a great many pebbles came down with the hail.—Providence Journal.
John and Margaret Bellamy of Fort Wayne were united in marriage six years ago by Squire France. Differences arose and a divorce followed. Recently they were again married by the same squire.
The Philadelphia zoo is in danger of losing its fine collection of animals and birds, according to a local newspaper, because of a lack of funds.
Far and Wide.
Not on this broad continental alone, but in material breeding tropical regions, in Guatemala, Mexico, South America, the Isthmus of Panama, and elsewhere, Hostetter's Stomach Bitters affords to inhabitants and souvenir protection against malaria. The miner, the freshly arrived immigrant, the tilter of the virgin soil newly robbed of its forests by the axe of the pioneer, find in the superb anti-febrite preserve against the poisonous ulma which in vast districts rich in natural resources, is yet fertile in disease. It annihilates disorders of the stomach, liver and bowels, fortifies those who use it against thematic breds and fostered by outdoor exposure; infuses genital sarum into a frame built by a rigorous temperature, and robs of their power to harm morning and evening mists and vaporizes laden with hurtfulness; strengthens the weak and conquers insistent kidney trouble.

A Silk Samaritan.
A landlord in Orchard street was ejecting a female tenant for nonpayment of rent when a passerby inquired the cause of the trouble, and being told that he would not see a woman turned out of her home and that he would pay the rent. He handed $100 to the landlord, who took four months' rent out of it and gave the balance ($52) back to the good Samaritan and a receipt to the woman. The man then went away, and the landlord a few minutes later discovered that he had been swindled, as the $100 bill was a counterfeit—New York Letter.
Fl-nance, Fee-nance and Fin-ance.
How ought it to be pronounced? All the experts on the subject, like Voorhees, Allison, Sherman and Bland, call it "fl-nance," with the accent on the first syllable. Most of the southerners make it "fee-nance," with a lingering drawl. Nobody yet has caught the classical touch, "fin-ance," except Pasco and Peffer. But they are right.—Cor. New York Recorder.
New York's New Diana.
The new Diana for the tower of the Madison Square Garden will be of aluminium. Copper was the material of the original chaste goddess, who pointed with her bow to the wind's eye from that lofty pinnacle awhile ago. The white metal is far better for the purpose on account of its comparatively small weight for the bulk. It is only about as heavy as chalk. The wholesale price of it has been brought down by improved processes to $1.25 a pound. Perchance aluminium will, at some time in the future, be the material universally employed for making statues.
Inasmuch as there is plenty of it to be had, every clay bank being a mine of it, it may reasonably be expected that processes will eventually be discovered for separating it in unlimited quantities at a comparatively cheap rate from the materials with which it is found combined in nature. One important advantage that it has for statuary and monumental purposes is the fact that it does not corrode and is as untarnishable as gold.
The aluminium Diana is being put together by a New York firm. She will be 13 feet high, whereas her predecessor was 18 feet in height. The sculptor, St. Gaudens, and other experts were of the opinion that the original goddess was too big. So they took it down and ordered a new one, while the big copper
Not on this broad commuting alone, but in malarial breeding tropical regions, in Guatemala, Mexico, South America, the Isthmus of Panama, and elsewhere. Hostetter's Stomach Bitters affords to inhabitants and sojourners protection against malaria. The owner, the freshly arrived immigrant, the tiller of the virgin soil newly robbed of its forests by the axe of the pioneer, find in the superb anti-febrile specific a preserver against the poisonous ulmosa which in vast districts rich in natural resources is yet fertile in disease. It annihilates disorders of the stomach, liver and bowels, fortifies those who use it against traumatic ailments bred and fostered by outdoor exposure; infuses general warmth into a frame shaded by a rigorous temperature, and robs of their power to harm swelling and reeling mists and vapors laden with hurtfulness; strengthens the weak and conquers insolient kidney trouble.

Miss. Elias Rudiger of South Omaha confessed to her husband that she had been intimate with Henry Reiser. Rudiger asked Reiser to make a similar statement in order that a divorce might be procured quietly, but Reiser declined. Last Monday evening Mrs. Rudiger asked Reiser to help her out of her troubles, and he refused again. The wounded woman then tired twice at her seducer, one shot severing his spinal cord. She thus tried to shoot herself, but failed. All parties are prominent in local society.
