CASTING OUT DEVILS:
TESTIMONY THAT EXORCISM HAS REASONS FOR EXISTENCE.
Signs Through Which One Who Is Possessed Is Recognized—The Conjuration and Other Strange Formulas Employed by the Good Monks.
The possessed woman of Gif is cured now not by the doctors, who were unable to do anything for her, but by the theological science of the cure of the parish and the firmness of Mgr. Goux, bishop of Versailles, which shows that exorcism has its reasons for existence and that "possession" is as real as hysteria. As a matter of fact, the church has never laid down her arms in the presence of the devils.
There are four principal signs through which the possessed one is recognized: 1. No known remedy relieves him. 2. He speaks of incidents and facts beyond his natural reach and which nobody has revealed to him. 3. He foretells events and speaks several languages unknown to him before his affliction. 4. In the presence of a priest and at sacred ceremonies he trembles, suffers pain, writhes and blasphemes.
The Catholic priests, and especially the Dominicans, have from away back practiced exorcism. According to the canons, the exorcist belongs to one of the minor orders which precede the priesthood. He must be humble of heart in his ministry, and if he operates with any thought of display he risks for himself the contagion of the evil spirits that still remain to be cast out.
Ordinarily the ceremony takes place in the church in the presence of the faithful assembled at prayer, particularly at the feasts of the Nativity, of the Resurrection, of the Ascension, of Pentecost, of the Virgin Mary and of the Apostles. After the morning mass, to which the possessed one assists, the exorcist puts on the surplice and assists the priest who puts on the violet colored cope, the symbol of the pains of purgatory. The patient who has confessed then approaches. A stole is passed around his neck to tie the devils that have become the masters of his body. Then the sign of the cross is made upon him, and he is sprinkled with holy water. In Latin the devil is commended to tell his name, to say whether or not he is alone and why he is there. Finally he is ordered to depart. The conjuration in any other language and especially in Hebrew is useless. Hebrew is reserved for satan himself.
The Flagellum demonium contains the most complete formula of exorcism, consisting of well known prayers mingled with the most ancient and strangest with unset gems, which so tenderly swallowed one by one, passing away a few moments after she had got the last one down. The family now wish to disinter her body and to open it for the recovery of the diamonds, but her own people, not crediting them's story, refuse to allow what they consider a description of the dead.—Lincoln (Neb.) Letter.
Peffer's Currency Scheme.
Brief mention has been made of Mr. Peffer's latest bill, but brief mention can hardly do justice to it.
Its title is "A bill to advance learning, the arts and sciences and promote the general welfare by founding a college of scientific learning in the District of Columbia." The bill consists of 10 sections.
The first provides for a department of education under the control of a secretary of education. The second provides for the construction within three years in the District of Columbia of a college of scientific learning, in which shall be taught all the classical and professional studies and arts and sciences necessary to give students a knowledge of the highest courses appertaining to such education and learning.
Another section appropriates $20,000,-000 for the cost of constructing the college and providing it with the necessary appliances. The eighth section appropriates $800,000,000 to be carried to the credit of the fund, the interest thereof to be applied monthly. The fourthteenth section provides for the purchase of aluminium for coinage of the currency to the amount of the appropriation. The coins are to be 1,5,10,25 and 50 cents, and $1,$5,$10,$20 (and multiples of $20). This currency is to be the legal tender for all debts, public and private.

Longest Track Laying This Year.
The longest stretch of track laying gone thus far this year has just been completed by the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie company in the extension of its line from Cathay, N.D., to Sterling, on the international boundary, a distance of 183.4 miles, all ironed since last spring. At the boundary line connection is made with a branch of the Canadian Pacific, now building from a point west of Regina, about 160 miles long, which will be completed in September, thus making the Soo line an important part of a new route from St. Paul and Minneapolis to the Pacific coast, and inaugurating a competing line which may greatly disturb existing conditions. No work of railway building in 1893 is likely to be more far-reaching in its effects than that which virtually extends the Canadian Pacific system to the Mississippi river.

The flagellum demonium contains the most complete formula of exorcism, consisting of well known prayers mingled with the most ancient and strangest appellations of God, such as "Oh, Adonai Tetragraptom" and others, which come in part from Chaldea, from Phoenicia and from Greece. The words are supposed to possess in themselves a certain power of evocation of celestial virtues which terrify the infernal legions. Certain words of Christ, according to St. Matthew, are used to drive out evil spirits.
If the demon does not retire immediately, the exorcist takes a painted image representing him and throws it into the consecrated fire along with incense, rue and sulphur, with strong mystic odors, intending to prove by this act that he will send the evil spirit back into his natural element—hell. This done, he places upon the head of the possessed one the book, the relics, the crucifix and sometimes even the host—the last and invincible remedy. According to the authority of certain demonographers, the devil then comes out through the nose of the patient.
In the ancient monasteries they made the exorcist carry upon his person certain amulets containing protective formulas. Sometimes these formulas, written upon pieces of parchment, were swallowed. In the process of digestion the exorcism was accomplished without fatigue.
In our days exorcism has taken refuge in La Trappe. The clergy are somewhat averse to it, while at the same time they do not refuse to admit it. The man who breaks the spells is very old. But the devils cast out by the good monks are reduced to the tormenting of animals. Pigs are their favorites. Then the old spell smashes them with beads and sprinkles them with holy water, and the pigs recover and become happy, because the devils go away.
Mr. J. K. Huysmans has been able to speak visu de the power of demons and the efficacy of exorcisms. Moreover, the eminent writer was well acquainted with one of the most learned demonstrators of his time, the Abbe Boullan, who ran through hell in his bare feet, holding the host in his hands.
Either at the church of Sanetot or the church of Senneville, I received this curious document from M. Gilbert Augustin Thierry, the author of "Une Ame en Peine." The cure of Petites-Dalles in curing the possessed says a special mass called the "red mass," or "mass of the murtyrs." Red flowers are placed upon the altar, and the priest wears a red stole. The church is draped in purple.
But, stranger still, a few years ago the wife of the editor of a leading Catholic journal in Paris, being troubled by evil spirits, witnessed the death of the Dominican priest who was endeavoring to exorcise her, and who was unable to then approach his neck to tie the devils that have become the masters of his body.

Either at the church of Sanetville or the church of Senneville, I received this curious document from M. Gilbert Augustin Thierry, the author of "Une Ame en Peine." The cure of Petites-Dalles in curing the possessed says a special mass called the "red mass," or "mass of the martyrs." Red flowers are placed upon the altar, and the priest wears a red stole. The church is draped in purple.
But, stranger still, a few years ago the wife of the editor of a leading Catholic journal in Paris, being troubled by evil spirits, witnessed the death of the Dominican priest who was endeavoring to exorcise her, and who was unable to guard himself against the forces with which he was contending.—Paris Figaro.
The Perfect Foot.
The Greek statuary, much of it dated centuries before Christ, seems to prove that the Greeks had feet much like those of modern Americans. The most beautiful of the Greek feet are hollowed out well both inside and out. They have short heels, high insteps and long, straight toes, slightly spatulate at the ends. That is the type of the most beautiful modern foot. It is, on the whole, a foot not frequently seen in its perfection, for often one or the other element of beauty is wanting.—San Francisco Argonaut.
A Novel Law Suit.
A novel suit is to be entered in the courts, at its next sitting, in which one party claims the right to have a post-mortem examination of a body made, while the other opposes it and defies the first to proceed with the affair. It seems that a few years ago a Mr. Warrington, a well to do cattleman of that county, married a second wife, to whom he presented the jewels, consisting of valuable diamonds belonging to the first Mrs. Warrington, and which she had received as part of her marriage portion from her father, a wealthy merchant in jewelry in San Francisco.
Warrington dying shortly after his second venture into matrimony, Mrs. Warrington kept the diamonds in defiance of the family of her predecessor, who claimed them as the deceased woman's heirs. Suit was brought against her, but she declared that her husband high sold them shortly after they were married and that she had no property to make good the loss even if she were liable for the act of Mr. Warrington.
This story was not believed by the first Mrs. Warrington's family, who maintained that the woman still had them in her possession, and soon after her death, which took place some weeks ago, the nurse who attended her in her last illness testified that the day she had died she had her bring her a box filled

A report from Selona says that society there is much exercised over the marriage of J. E. Crowder of that town and Miss Laura Smith of Santa Cruz. Miss Smith and her father went to Selma one day last week, and benging Crowder up forced him to sign a marriage contract. They then took the next train for home, leaving the disusted groom in Selma. He has employed a lawyer to secure a divorce on the ground that he was forced to sign the contract. Miss Smith was in Frereso last July as a delegate from Santa Cruz to the Young People's Christian Endeaver Convention. She met Crowder and afterward concluded it was best to marry him. He is furious.

KENDALL'S SPAVIN CURE.
STAR, LANE CO., ORGUN, Feb. 5th, 1892.
Dr. B. J. KENDALL Co.,
Dear Sir—I have used your KENDALL'S SPAVIN CURE for the last twelve years never being without it but a few weeks in that time and I have made several wonderful use with it. I cared for curb of large standing. Then I had a four year old colt badly sweened; tried everything without any benefit, so I tired your injunction, and in a few weeks dewashed and bleached diled up all field, and the other, a four year old that had a Thoroughpin and Blood Spavin on the same joint, and to-day no one can tell which leg it was on. These statements can for proven, if they cared for curb of large now and can leased any day at Kotage Grove, Or.
