ANTICIPATION. One time we stood upon the water's edge That flowed far out into its parent sea. And there while summer blushed on field and hedge. We vowed to love throughout eternity. And thou, fond heart, hast kept that vow full well Through every change that protean fortune brought. But I am sunk in the waves that swell O'er Soylla's hidden rocks—and am forgot. What stern mischance hath snapped the golden thread That bound thy heart in unison with mine? Unless her soul be Nlobe's instead, Whose tears may flow as feelingly as thine? From whom may pardon come if not from thee? And yet I dare not ask so great a be Whose life is wrecked like thine? And who is she? Hath warranty to sing so sad a tune? Yet cease those mournful sighs, as deep perchance As over Dido for Eneas heaved; The future lies beyond; the recompense Of time is most, for her who most hath grieved. One hope I have that absence cannot take. One longing that the world can never steal: When life is done, in other spheres to wake. And at thy feet a worshiper to kneel. -St George Best in Good Housekeeping. London's Theater Curtain. One of the finest curtains in this country is at the Lyceum theater. On it all that art can do has been lavished. Made of a rich, beautiful plush of dragon's blood hue, it hangs from the proscenium arch in artistic folds. The curtain was presented to Mr. Irving by the Baroness Burdott Coutts, its cost being 1,000 guineas. One thousand yards of plush were used in its manufacture, and it achieved the fame of once being parodied in a Gallety burlesque. Mr. Wyndham's curtain at the Criterion is a creation of Maple & Co. and cost about £120. At the Gaiety the present act drop is the work of Mr. George Banks. The artist's conception takes the form of a great white satin cloth, with a solitary figure opening two curtains. The Savoy curtain is noted both for its beauty and the artistic manner in which it rises and reveals the stage. The act drop at the Adelphi, the home of "creepy" melodrama, is a curtain which has marked the resting places of countless pieces of the transpontine type. It represents a scene in Sherwood forest in the days of Robin Hood and his merry, merry men—London Million. CINCHING UP FOR TROUBLE. A Curious Impulse That Soldiers Feel In Moments of Danger. There were two men lowering a heavy cask of wine into a collar the other day, and one of them asked his comrade to stand by a moment. The man stood by and the first speaker took an extra hitch in the belt of his overalls. "That's queer," said Perry Ingram, who was passing at the time. "I saw 10 men do that in the face of certain death, and of the other 250 who were with us I guess nine in every 10 did the same. I know I did anyhow. Can't tell why, because I never thought the matter over, but I'll swear that if I ever get into another fix like that again I'll do the same thing over. "It was during the Basutu war of 1880. I was a trooper there, and was one of the 500 and odd that composed the Kimberley Horse. If there ever was a set of not-care-a-continental scalawags in Queen Victoria's uniform, it was that same gang of rough riders. "We fought all right, of course but that all we were good for. Honestly, I think half the troop was made up of exconvicts and the balance of that class of adventurers who had pioneered the road to the South African diamond fields. "We were in fort on Thlotse heights. The Basutus, about 5,000 strong, were amusing themselves plotting at us from the other side of the Thlotse river and one day they took it into their heads to send 1,200 warriors across the stream, over fords above and below us, to do us up. "As it happened that morning about 250 of us were detailed to escort a couple of 6-pounders up the hill to the fort from below, and on our return trip the Basutus got between us and the encampment. "We threw out in open file while they rode down on us—they were well mounted, were those Basutus—and we had orders to hold fire until they were about 100 yards away. "Well, when they came within the given distance we fired, but instead of scaring them by killing off a hundred or so the beggars still came on. Dismounting from their horses, they seized their assegals. The hill was black with them, and they rushed on us like the hours of hell." "It's all up now, boys,' thought I, for when those chaps take it into their heads to go to the whole hog and charge they..." At the Gaiety the present act drop is the work of Mr. George Banks. He is a wise man who leaves behind him no letters or personal papers of any sort that mean much in the private history of his life, particularly if he is a literary man, for more than all other hearts, the daws like to peck at those of men who are favored of fame. The most elusive flavor of the most retiring souls is irresistibly tempting to their taste when the famous man is dead and gone where he can no longer say that this letter or that, this poem or the other, meant only a mood, not an abiding part of his life.—Boston Transcript. In a Hospital. Doctor (to patient)—Young man, you do not seem to pick up as fast as I expected you would. Patient—That's so, doctor. I don't feel as if I would be able to leave the hospital for some time yet. I believe that the nurse is to blame for it. "Why, how is that?" Well, she is only 18 years old and very good looking." "I think I'll have to prescribe another nurse."—Texas Siftings. Superstition That Is Ancient. In many parts of Great Britain the superstition still survives that it is folly or madness to save a drowning man, as he will sooner or later do an injury to the resouer. The superstition comes down from our ancestors, yet traces of it exist among the Sioux and other Indians, who seem to have inherited it from aboriginal sources. This belief is most prevalent in Cornw and various parts of Scotland.—Chicago Herald. The Face of a Silver Dollar. Some numismatist, who delights in studying the face of the American dollar, announces that it "presents upon the obverse side not only a very good likeness of George II, but also a clearly delineated representation of the head of the British lion." It is said that these unpatriotic emblems were surreptitiously introduced by a perfidious Englishman who was employed in the Philadelphia mint.—Exchange. Explaining a Habit. An observant statistician makes the amazing assertion that girls with retrousse noses marry sooner and are more fortunate in catching good husbands than young ladies whose features are of the Greek or Roman type. Then there may be method in the habit of some "We throw out in open the white they rode down on us—they were well mounted, were those Basutus—and we had orders to hold fire until they were about 100 yards away. "Well, when they came within the given distance we fired, but instead of scaring them by killing off a hundred or so the beggars still came on. Dismounting from their horses, they seized their assegals. The hill was black with them, and they rushed on us like the hounds of hell. "It’s all up now, boys," thought I, for when those chaps take it into their heads to go the whole hog and charge they do it. "While I was thrusting another cartridge into my rifle I felt a bit queer about the throat, and somehow, I can't tell how, it seemed as though my stomach was empty. "Now, I know what it is to be scared, but I was not frightened then. There was no time to get frightened. It was just stand and fight till you dropped dead full of spear holes. "I laid down my rifle for a second to loosen my revolver in its case, and then from some involuntary instinct that I cannot explain I drew in my belt a couple of inches around my waist. As I did so I looked at the fellows nearest me. Every one of them was cinching up just the same as myself. "Just for a moment everything on our side was silence, and the Basutus were not 70 yards away. Then we all began blazing away again and yelling as men do in battle. "The fire frightened the blacks. They came within 50 yards of us, then turned tail and fled. We kept blazing away at the beggars as long as they were in range, and then suddenly ceased. "The strain was gone, the peril of death over. Only a moment before it had seemed as though our little band was to be wiped off the earth. It was a suffocating day, so I laid down my gun to wipe the sweat and powder from my forehead. "Then I set about loosening my belt. As I did so I turned to the 10 fellows nearest me. Every one of them was doing the same. "Queer, isn't it that a fellow wants to cinch himself up in the face of certain death?"—San Francisco Examiner. To Preserve The richness, color, and beauty of the hair, the greatest care is necessary, much harm being done by the use of worthless dressings. To be sure of having a first-class article, ask your drugist or perfumer for Ayer's Hair Vigor. It is absolutely superior to any other preparation of the kind. It restores the original color and fullness to hair which has become thin, faded, or gray. It keeps the scalp cool, moist, and free from dandruff. It heals itching humors, prevents baldness, and imparts to THE HAIR of George II, but also a clearly delineated representation of the head of the British lion.” It is said that these unpatriotic emblems were surreptitiously introduced by a perfidious Englishman who was employed in the Philadelphia mint.—Exchange. Then there may be method in the habit of some young ladies of turning up their noses at every man that approaches them.—Boston Transcript. No Kissing In Japan. There is in Japan no kissing, not even in the nursery. All the dangers which have been so eloquently described in newspapers rising from the touch of lips in human love directly and at the communion table indirectly are avoided by the national aversion for labial contact.—Albert S. Ashmead, M. D., in Science. A prominent physician says that half the cases of nervous prostration, dyspepsia and insomnia that come to him for treatment are to be directly traced to an inactive liver. When she loses a child the Japanese mother does not wring her hands and look up to heaven. She sits with folded hands, sunken head, her eyes looking into her lap. “Fairlop oak,” the Titan of the Hainault forest, which was uprooted by a great windstorm in the year 1830, was 100 feet high and 36 feet in circumference. I tried various remedies, but without success, till at last I began to USE Ayer's Hair Vigor, and now my hair is growing rapidly and is restored to its original color.”—Mrs. Annie Collins, Dighton, Mass. “I have used Ayer's Hair Vigor for nearly five years, and my hair is moist, glossy, and in an excellent state of preservation.
