ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY.

Editors and Proprietors.
THURSDAY... JUNE 1, 1893
Stockholders in the co-operative sugar refinery should subscribe for the Gazette to keep posted on the matters connected with the refinery. It is the only paper that publishes complete accounts of the transactions of the stockholders' meetings, and is likewise filled with the latest news of interest carefully prepared and presented from all parts of the world. A selected story appears each week upon the fourth page, and there is reading for the home and family circle. Local events of interest are printed and commented upon editorially, and each issue is a compendium of the happenings of the week in this section of the country. All notices of meetings and other public communications from the Board of Directors to the stockholders, as well as the noting of the progress of the beet fields and the other matters connected in an interesting way with the consumption of this great enterprise, which we have been working so hard to obtain during the past two years, are published in our columns, and we bring you the earliest tidings of events of interest that are scheduled to occur. These items are of such importance that they should be alone worth the price of subscription, which remains at the reasonable figure of $2 per year. We present also each week a budget of carefully prepared correspondence from the different sections of the valley, and we invite discussions from all beet raisers upon topics not only concerning them, but likely also to engage the interest of the reading public.
Don't borrow your neighbor's paper, and then go home cussing the editor because his views do not coincide with your own, if you happen to have any; and don't thrash your wife if you see something in the paper with which you do not agree; be good to her, and stop up to the office like a man and subscribe for the paper like a money-making beet raiser and gentleman, or send in your subscription through the mail—we'll take on the Coast. Both the Call and Bulletin are well conducted metropolitan newspapers, and stand well up in front among the leading papers of the country.
A BAD CAVE-IN.
SINKING OF A SECTION OF SANTA FE TRACK AT HORSESHOE BEND—ONLY HALF A DITCH OF WATER COMING DOWN.
A section of over 200 feet of the Santa Fe track caved in at Horseshoe Bend about 7 o'clock Tuesday evening, making a very bad break, and causing the suspension of travel over the route. The cave was caused by seepage from the upper ditch, which runs along the hill twenty feet inside of the track, and at 11 o'clock the bank of the ditch was washed out. The track walker came upon the break shortly after nightfall and thus prevented what might have been a very bad railroad accident, the embankment being fifty feet high, and leading down to a precipitous declivity.
The wrecking train in charge of Roadmaster McNeil and about 100 men were at work at the break all day yesterday, and it will take them this week before the damage is repaired.
Superintendent Groat went up to the break yesterday and repaired the bank, the water having been turned out at the upper gate. Only half the usual quantity of water is coming down the ditch, it being unsafe to bring down a larger quantity.
The break will be filled in with gravel and substantially repaired, and trains will be running over the line again by the end of the week. This is the second cave-in in the railroad has sustained while coming through the canyon, and once the track was buried under a small land slide above the head of the ditch, but although the road is tortuous in the canyon, no accident has resulted.
Engineer Gamble, who pulls the train from Santa Ana around the kite-shaped track, via Orange, had to come this way yesterday, and made a trip to the break and back again. He will be with us during the week, as travel through the canyon has been temporarily suspended.

One of our Republican subscribers sent us the following very interesting dissertation upon the causes of the current disruption of the finances:
Why is it, with the advent or incoming of a Democratic administration, where so much had been promised by the administration, as to the adjusting of finances, we are having so many bank failures, and a general disruption of finances, as is now appearing all the way from Wall street to the wild west? Is it lack of confidence as to the Democratic administration, or is it one of the solutions of the tariff question, which I, as a Republican, have always predicted must cause from a pledge to alter the tariff? Capital is timid, and in the absence of any certain course to be pursued in the furtherance of this issue will certainly be wary. The Democrats before election promised the country one certain thing, and that was a great reduction of the tariff. They have since election day very sections of the valley, and we invite discussions from all but raisers upon topics not only concerning them, but likely also to engage the interest of the reading public.
Don't borrow your neighbor's paper, and then home cussing the editor because his views do not coincide with your own, if you happen to have any; and don't thrash your wife if you see something in the paper with which you do not agree; be good to her, and stop up to the office like a man and subscribe for the paper like a money-making beet raiser and gentleman, or send in your subscription through the mail—we'll take the chances of getting it. That's the way of supporting a paper that's doing the right thing by you, and trying to make the refinery go—that has been working to that end for the past two years. If you are hard up, we'll take your subscriptions anyway and wait for our pay till you get the money for your beets, or we'll take bonds of the corporation. We are not hard up, and have probably more money than any newspaper man in the county. We'll trust a beet raiser every time. We want them all to be subscribers to this paper. We have a number of subscribers on our books who have been taking this paper for years and years—over since we've been in the country—and who haven't paid us a cent since we've been here. They spend more money for whisky and general cussiness in one day than would pay their back dues and a couple of years' subscription in advance. But they never pay the printer—they aren't built that way. These are the follows we are after. We want each mother's son of them to be replaced on our books by a beet raiser, either from Anaheim, or Fullerton, or Buena Park, or Centralia, or down in the Garden Grove and Westminster country—it makes no difference to us which. Then we'll publish all these delinquents' names, in red ink, with the amounts due us, and make them a present of it all, and stop their subscriptions. But we want to get the beet raiser' names on our books in the mean time, so that we may listen with greater satisfaction to the wail of the other fellows and the gnashing of their teeth.

An Eloquent Sermon.
Rev. J. W. Campbell preached an eloquent sermon in the First Methodist Church of Los Angeles on Sunday, when special memorial services were held. From his sermon we take the following extract:
"Each Memorial day carries us further from the scenes of carnage and war, when scars were unhealed and wounds yet ached. There grows more love and gentleness in the acts of devotion with which the memories of the dead are honored. No one can afford to harbor angry or selfish violence without showing an ignoble soul and withholding allegiance to that which is forgiving and Christian. Yet the golden age has not fully come. Shoolhouse and church do not everywhere reign supreme, but we follow on under the blessing of God toward peace and order until, wherever our flag floats, the influence of the Bible and spelling-book shall be a wonderful leaven to enlighten and civilize those who come from foreign shores to our land which has cost great a price. Showers of spring flowers will fall all over our land next Tuesday. Vast cemeteries, where the great general, Death, has mustered in his ranks, will be made gorgous with bloom. Such a memorial of war only a Christian land could know. The glory of this day comes not with the roar of cannon, but with the music of birds; not with the ringing of bells, but with the waving of olive branches; not with the display of captured colors, but with the red of the rose, the white of the lily and the blue of the forget-me-not. Let this day of flowers be ever to us a national holiday, when men who have stood face to face, braving death, shall again stand face to face and shake hands in fellowship and love above the graves they honor and adore."

United States Treasurer Nebeker paid into the United States Treasury at Washington on Friday $1,055, that amount having been stolen or lost from the treasury cash. The money was all lost in the redemption division of the Treasurer's office at three different times, and all since the 4th of last March. At the time of the occurrence the losses were reported to Chief Drummond, of the secret service of the Treasury Department, but he has been unable to discover how the money disappeared, whether by theft or by getting into waste paper.
Why will you continue to pay enormous profits to trusts when you can do better elsewhere? Malaria
Is believed to be caused by poisonous mixtures arising from low, marshy land or decaying vegetable matter, and which breathed into the lungs, enter and poison the blood. If a healthy condition of the blood is maintained by taking Hood's Sarsaparilla, one is much less liable to malaria, and Hood's Sarsaparilla has cured many severe cases of this distressing affection.
A Wonderful Medicine.
"For malaria I think Hood's Sarsaparilla has no equal. It has kept my children well right through the summer, and we live in one of the worst places for malaria in Marysville. I take Hood's Sarsaparilla for that all gone feeling, with great benefit." Miss D. P. Davis, Marysville, Cal.
Break-Bone Fever.
"My daughter Pearl was taken with dengue (or break-bone) fever 2 years ago, and my friends thought I would lose her. I had almost given up hope until she began to take Hood's Sarsaparilla. She took four bottles in four months, and gained 15 pounds. I thank Hood's Sarsaparilla for giving her back to me restored to health and strength."
Hood's Sarsaparilla
Sold by Juggists. $1; six for $5. Prepared only by C. I HOOD & CO., Apothecaries, Lowell, Mass.
