LETTERS FROM THE PEOPLE.
Orange Growing and Freight Hates.
We find in the Los Angeles Herald of Monday the following very sensible and timely letter on orange growing and freight rates, from the pen of our fellow townman Mr. C. H. Gosch. Mr. Gosch is unusually well posted on what he writes about, and his letter is well worthy of personal. He says:
To your article headed, Is Orange Growing a Success (Financially), If Not, Why Not? signed by Grower, I wish to add a few points that I have never seen mentioned in any paper, regarding this delicious fruit, which if its size, beauty, exquisite taste, and hygienic properties are duly considered, rightfully ought to be named the Queen of all Fruits. To establish this fact a superficial study of the orange will convince anyone, although he may thoughtlessly have consumed them by the hundreds or even thousands.
In none of the numerous fruits known has Mother Nature taken such especial care to shield and protect the edible part as in the orange and the lemon. The rind or peel, consisting of a more or less thick felt-like covering, has evidently for its object the protection of the transparent fine tissue skin including the pulp from rough usage, sitting like a cushion. The thick, yellow peel is itself protected by the outer rind, consisting of a network of thousands of minute calls filled with an atherorious aromatic oil, impermeable to water and the air, imparting to the fruit its keeping qualities, thereby enabling it to be shipped on very great distances without losing any of its properties.
Most of our fruits also, from the time of their blooming to their ripening, take no more than from two to six months, while the orange to do that takes a full year, whereby nature itself designates it as one of its most perfect productions in the immense vegetable kingdom.
Besides its delicious taste and nutritional qualities, the orange, on account of its citric acid, has very lately been pronounced by some of the highest medical authorities in Europe and America as one of the most effective antidotes against infectious diseases, such as typhus fever and cholera.
And yet with all these eminent qualities, this noblest of fruits, considered as a luxury in nine-tenths of the world where it cannot be grown, is more and more debased in the land of its growth, being in fact degraded to a level with any other vegetable or cereal, with which cattle are fed and hogs fattened. A pound of the vulgar potato, cabbage, and most of the commonest kinds of vegetables, growing on cheap lands and with two or three crops of them during the year, is worth as much right here as the average price of a pound of oranges.

Sale Under For Mortgage
In the Superior Court of the gales State of California Christopher Gomber, plaintiff defensian Under and by virtue of a deal order of sale duly made and owed on the 24th day of April. AExecution for the enforcement sale of property under foreclosure out of the said Superior Co April. A.D. 1833,在the favor of Christopher Gomber,M.L.Wicks,Shelden Little,A. Goldwaltweil, defendants, crowned Superior Court at the 24th day 1833,and to mo delivered commanded to sell at public coin of the United States, the decree described real estate,
And yet with all these eminent qualities, this noblest of fruits, considered as a luxury in nine-tenths of the world where it cannot be grown, is more and more debased in the land of its growth, being in fact degraded to a level with any other vegetable or cereal, with which cattle are fed and hogs fattened. A pound of the vulgar potato, cabbage, and most of the commonest kinds of vegetables, growing on cheap lands and with two or three crops of them during the year, is worth as much right here as the average price of a pound of oranges.
While vegetable land giving a crop every six months is worth from $50 to $100 an acre, good orange land with trees from eight to ten years old, in good, healthy and bearing condition, represents an actual cost value of from $1,000 to $3,000 an acre, according to location and many other circumstances, or an average of about $2,000 per acre. An orange orchard, to do well, requires constant care and attention, in the shape of five to six cultivations, harrowings and irrigations during every year, which, if scale posts are to be fought and the proper remedies, such as fumigating, spraying, etc., are applied, causes an annual expense of from $50 to $75 per acre, which yearly outlay, added to the original cost of land and planting of trees, say $300 per acre, with interest at ten per cent added and accumulating for eight years, will show the fact that the price of $2,000 an acre as assumed above is not in any way exaggerated, but forms the actual cost value of orange orchards eight to ten years old and in full bearing and healthy condition.
The investment of capital in orange growing is therefore a business proposition like any other, being as such entitled to a moderate product or income of say ten to twelve per cent net on capital invested, wherefore if an orange orchard, on whatever capital invested in it, does not produce an income of at least ten per cent it is undoubtedly to be put down as a failure. That such failures occur most frequently, even in well attended and bearing orchards, is unfortunately a notorious fact.
The question "Grower" throws up for such cases he also answers in part—but not sufficiently to dilucidate the causes bearing on this most important question. He however hits on the cardinal cause of the existing evil, which is the exorbitant, unreasonable freight charges exacted by the railroad octopus, having two effects, namely: that on the grower who does not get a living price for his fruit, and the consumer who has to pay a fancy price, so that only the well-to-do class can afford to permit themselves the luxury.. If the railroad monopolies were not so utterly blind to their own best interests, they would make a reasonable reduction of rates, by which the grower and consumer of oranges would be benefited, the consumption would increase enormously, being made accessible to the poorer and most numerous classes, whereby the now laanguishing orange industry would be imparted with new life, by which the railroads would secure the greatest benefit. Their present execrable policy "to put on the trafie all it can bear" is a suicidal policy because they are putting on more than it can bear, and if persisted in, they will have to become losers, together with many ruined orange growers, simply because nobody can continue for any length of time in a business that does not pay. If this now most of all important industries in Southern California is forced to a halt, this will mean a march backwards, which it would be hard to stop. The critical moment has arrived, and if the only proper remedy of lower freight rates is

Dear Siras--I have used your KENDALL's SPAVIN CURE for the last five years never being without it but a few weeks in that time and I have made several wonderful curies with it. I cured a Curb of long standing. Then I had a four year old colt badly sweened a tinct every thing without any benefit; so I tried your liniment; and in five weeks he was well and his hound filled up all right, and the other, a four year old had a Thoroughpin and Blood Spavin on the same Joint; she to-day movements can be proved; if necessary; the four year olds are now seven and can be seen any day at Cottage Grove, Or.
Price $1.00 per bottle.
