The High School Matter. Editor Gazette:—This high school business, about which there has been considerable cackling of late, was not set in motion from any necessity for its establishment either by the people or the press. It is needless to mention whence it originated. To this assertion it may be advanced that the people generally signed a petition in its favor. That is the argumentum ad captandum hominem, which may suffice for surface scratchs, but does not pan out satisfactorily to those who want bottom facts and figures. People generally sign petitions which are carried around to them without investigating whether the ends sought justify the means, and generally afterward, when they find themselves bound hand and foot, they feel like vigorously kicking themselves for their oedulity. There was a maxim among the Romans "that the people want to be deceived." The populace have not materially changed in this respect since their time. We have just been congratulating ourselves that the debt on the present school building, which was hanging ever us with its ten per cent interest for years, has been paid, and it was hoped for a time we might have a breathing spell. It seems we are doomed to disappointment, for before a year has rolled around another project comes to the front, which, if successful in its fulfilment, will place another burden upon our already overburdened shoulders, with grave doubts on the part of those at least who have had the largest experience here in school work as to whether the benefits to be derived from the establishment of the said high school will be commensurate to the outlay. If there can be raked together ten ambitious youth of either or both sexes who desire to prepare themselves for admission to the freshman class of the University, it would be cheaper for the district and more advantageous for the scholars to tax the district for preparation at a gymnasium or prepatory school, than go to the expense of thousands of dollars in the erection and equipment of a high school building, to say nothing of the extra expense in running the department. What is needed and has been for years past is more accommodation for the infant classes. When Miss Clothier took charge of the first primary room it was found necessary, in consequence of the number of children registered, to divide the school, one-half the number attending from 9 o'clock to 12 m., the other half from 1 to 4 p.m., the children thus losing one hour of tuition daily. The same state of things existed the first year Miss Jones had charge of the school, and it was in contemplation then to build a two-room house on the present school lot to obviate this difficulty, but upon merging the Fairview district into day, however, while working in a barn he observed a big rattler on the floor, which he immediately killed. The sight of the dead reptile threw him into convulsions, and since then he has acted in a peculiar manner, imitating a snake by dragging himself over the floor and protruding his tongue. He a under medical care, and it is thought by the doctors that it will be several months before he can recover. The Glass Sponges. Did you ever carefully examine one of the so called "glass sponges?" The most delicate and beautiful of these perhaps is the Venus flower basket, which is found only in the deep sea near the Philippine islands. It looks for all the world like spun glass woven into an intricate pattern, and is so delicate and exquisite that one can hardly believe it to be nothing but the skeleton of a sponge. This particular species of sponge is composed of bands of spicules running lengthwise from end to end, with cross-bands intersecting at right angles. Before they are thoroughly skeletonized the corners of the squares formed by the crossbands are filled with a brown jelly-like substance, which reduces the spaces to little tubelike holes. The edges of these little holes project slightly above the general surface of the sponge and give it the appearance of being dotted with miniature volcanic craters. The ridges, instead of having their surfaces made up of a continuous glassy skeleton, have their soft substances supported by whole multitudes of delicate microscopic, six rayed spicules. In some instances these fragile spicules seem to be supported, or at least held in place, by little hooked stars and rosettes. In its natural state the whole of the Venus flower basket is covered with fine hairs, the mouth being kept closed by a net of fine glasslike needles. Captain Simmons' men found the flower basket fastened to a rock by a handle carefully attached to the basket in four different places, and the divers of the Exile brought up one specimen that rested on the top of a marble pedestal which at some time had been lost in the harbor at Najaja.-St. Louis Republic. The same state of things existed the first year Miss Jones had charge of the school, and it was in contemplation then to build a two-room house on the present school lot to obviate this difficulty, but upon merging the Fairview district into the Anaheim School District it was thought enough scholars would attend what is now called the West Anaheim school to relieve the pressure on their, and the project was abandoned. At present it has been found necessary to again divide the school, there being more infants in attendance in the first primary room than seats can be found for or one teacher manage. It is more important that this herd of little ones (the foundation of whose educational, mental and moral career is being laid) should be provided for first; wherefore the suggestion is pertinent, that a two-room building be erected on the present lot for their better accommodation. There being now six hundred dollars in the county treasury to the credit of the district, the surplus found to be on hand after the debt on the present school building was extinguished, a similar amount, more or less, might be raised by direct taxation, and a building erected therewith ready for occupancy, when the schools open next September. Three of these are in California, two in Nebraska and one in Utah. The product for these in pounds for 1892 was as follows: Watsonville, 11,390,921; Chino, 7,903,541; Alameda, 2,506,860; Lebeh, Utah, 1,473,500; Grand Island, Neb., 2,110,100; Norfolk, Neb., 1,698,400; total 27,083,322; product for 1891, 12,004,-838; increase for 1892, 15,078,484. It will be noticed that the product in this State last year was 21,801,322 pounds. This industry has been established longer in this State than elsewhere in this country. The bounty of two cents per pound authorized by Congress in 1890 has been a great stimulus in the production of beet sugar. The product this year is likely to show a further increase. Peter Cooper's Cherry Table. There is in the city of Brooklyn at the house of Mrs. A.A. Golden a table, the history of which, without doubt, will interest many an old New Yorker. It was made by Peter Cooper, which lends it the more interest. It was at this table that he and his wife ate their first dinner after they were married. In appearance it is much smaller than the modern dining table. It has two leaves and two end pieces that are attached to the leaves by hinges. In all it is about four feet square. The legs are long and slender. The wood is of cherry, and, old as the table is, so carefully has it been kept by Mrs. Golden there is no sign of scratch or mar on it. In his early ventures Peter Cooper was often unsuccessful. It was in 1816, when he was living at Hempstead, Long Island, that he failed in business. A few days after his failure he held an auction sale of his household goods, among them being this table. Mrs. Mary Golden, a mother-in-law of Mrs. A.A. Golden, bought it for a few dollars. She afterward used it as a dinner table. At her death, in 1853, she willed it to the present owner, Mrs. A.A. Golden. It is THE Superior Medicine because it is always the same in appearance, flavor, and effect, and, being highly concentrated, only small doses are needed. It is, therefore, the most economical blood-purifier in existence. It makes food nourishing, work pleasant, sleep refreshing, and life enjoyable. It searches out all impurities in the system and expels them harmlessly by the natural channels.
