The Weekly Gazette. ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY. Henry Kuchel, Charles Kuchel, Editors and Proprietors. THURSDAY... FEBRUARY 21, 1893. The sad case of accidental shooting reported from Placontia should be a warning to parents not to allow firearms in the hands of the young. The unfortunate occurrence is another illustration of the fact that one cannot be too careful in the handling of these weapons, not even those most familiar with their use. Two boys, each having some experience in the handling of firearms, were out hunting, and were creeping upon a meadow lark to shoot at it, when the rifle, carried by the rear youth alongside of him, was discharged, inflicting a fatal wound. Familiarity with the danger attending the use of the weapon had led to carelessness, with the usual awful result. It should be a warning, not only to parents, but to those out hunting as well. Recently some discussion has been occasioned by the practice of youngsters in town carrying concealed weapons, and displaying them upon the streets at will. The Trustees should pass an ordinance covering this class of petty offenders, if not for the boys' sake or that of their parents, at least for the protection of the public. District Attorney Scarborough has been to Sacramento for the purpose of procuring legislation for the amelioration of the present overworked condition of the county officers. He has prepared a bill which provides for the creation of new county offices, including a County Clerk, Clerk of the Superior Court, Recorder, Register of Deeds, etc. The bill is calculated to afford relief to the present hampered condition of several of the county officers. It is timely, and fits the necessities of the case to a nicoty, but we fear the legislative session is drawing too rapidly to a close to warrant any degree of hope for its passage. However, it might be called up and passed as a matter of urgency. The Supreme Court has decided in favor of Orange county in the suit against been explored for coyotes and the scalps brought across the State line to be paid for by California taxpayers. In fact there was some talk at one time of establishing coyote-breeding farms, but that was probably an effort of the imagination on the part of some one unfriendly to the act. At all events when it was seen that the coyote bounties were looting the treasury, and that there would be coyote scalps enough presented within the next two years to bankrupt the State, an attempt was made at the present session of the Legislature, to repeal the bounty law, when, strange to say, members from San Francisco and Los Angeles and other cities, whose flocks of sheep were certainly in no danger from coyotes, opposed the bill. It is quite time to put an end to nonsense on this matter and repeal the bill. The report of the Controller shows that it is costing the State nearly or quite $200,000 a year for the bounties, which would pay a dozen times over for all the sheep devoured by coyotes. Repeal the bill. PLACENTIA POINTERS. THE ORANGE CROP ESTIMATED AT EIGHTY-EIGHT CARLOADS—SEASONABLE RAINS AND FINE GROPS. EDITOR GAZETTE:—The very air is full of hopefulness, the season is so propitious. The rains have been seasonable and abundant. The crops are as fine as any one could wish. The native grasses now make excellent pasturage. The cabbage crop is being moved; it is thought that at least fifty carloads will leave Placentia. Ten tons to a car, and $18 a ton, will make quite a little money for the growers. The grain crop is the largest ever sown and looks fine. From the old Shanklin ranch to the Brea hills is one vast grain field. Acres of potatoes will be planted; many are already planted. Some new potatoes are as large as walnuts. Then the orange crop is about ready to move. The crop is estimated at something about as follows: The French orchard ... 2400 boxes John Wagner ... 600 Wm. Klockke ... 1500 W.M. McFaulden ... 400 T.P. Linde ... 800 M.Nino ... 150 Thos. Strain ... 200 A.T. Pendleton ... 200 T. Staley ... 400 J.B. Tombes ... 200 F.B. Sandilands ... 250 R.H. Gilman ... 10,000 hogs, has purchased them property of 2,700 acres, Angeles, for nearly $20 Stimson, a Chicago mover erecting the largest block corner of Third and bought the opposite corner. The German-American Saints have bought the Main and First street which it will erect a large $100,000 has been offered property, on which the warehouse will be erected other important transactions and a number of others. The money was used for the construction of the Olive bridge and for other purposes. The Supervisors of Orange county refused to return it, and the Los Angeles authorities sued for it, but were beaten in the lower court. The decision of the Supreme Court plainly says that the Legislature has the power to divide a county and fairly apportion its public funds. This was the case in the division of Los Angeles county, and Orange county was clearly entitled to the money awarded it. The Court holds that the items or which the action is brought were expenditures between the date of the creation and organization of the new county, but during all of the time the territory within which it was made was a portion of Los Angeles county, and it must be assumed that they were made in the wise exercise of its control over that territory. The fact that the Legislature made no provision for the reimbursement of monies expended by Los Angeles county for municipal purposes within this territory is indicative that it was not its intention that it should be reimbursed therefor. Edmund L. Peebles, for many years a resident of San Diego county, and for a time editor of the Perria New Era, died at Colorado Springs, Colo., of consumption two weeks ago. Mr. Peebles was a writer of clearness, strength and grace of style, and during his editorship the New Era was one of the most interesting papers that found its way to our editorial table. His death is a misfortune. The editor of the Bradshaw (Nebraska) Express has the nerve to say: A letter from California states that Press Brewer has purchased a twenty-acre stock and grain farm near Anaheim. Every vacant piece of land is examined almost daily by home seekers. And visitors are heard to exclaim that they did not know of such a paradise as this. Those who have secured a foothold here are congratulating themselves that their lines are cast in such a pleasant place. The mother, sister and cousin of our fellow citizen, F.B. Sandilands, are now on a visit to him from England. Dr.M.A.Menges, Prof.Newton B.Percee and ladies of Santa Ana made a visit to Placentia last Sunday, and were delighted with their ride and the country. A number of old friends and neighbors of W.M.McFadden called on him last Sunday to pay their respects and congratulate him upon having reached another mile stone in the journey of life, and with many wishes that he might live to see as many more anniversaries before he would be called an "old man." The school is in a flourishing condition and is fall to running over. It looks very much as if the addition of another room by the next school year would be a necessity. Col.Rohrer is removing the temptation to puffer his fine Washington Navels and beautiful late Valencias by putting a good strong and substantial barbed fence around his grove. More anon. Placentia, Feb. 21. OTHER PLACENTIA ITEMS: We are to have some more of our roads graded up. Mr.Schorn was up Saturday and made the necessary arrangements. B.F.Porter has charge of the work. He will grade the road from Ben Kraemer's north to Dickson & Forbes; thence from the McFarland place north to John Wagner's land, and to the northeast corner of J.K.Tuffree's ranch, being the Soquel Canyon road. Good roads are what we want. Everybody is busy, and more than busy. The wind dried the top of the ground badly and makes a thick crust on it. Spuds are going in fast with Mr.Vale's new planter. Pres is all right, and would not swap his twenty-acre ranch below town for all the ranches around Bradshaw, whose distinguishing characteristic seems to be the severity of its cyclones, with blizzards on the side. A number of important bills will probably come up for consideration in the Legislature during the coming week. Efforts were made in the Assembly last week to bring up the Riverside Bill out of order, but proved futile, but according to the rule that on one day in each week each Assemblyman can have the privilege of bringing up one bill out of order, the Riverside and Madera bills will probably come up before the house. Both bills have already passed the Senate. The concurrent resolution to oust the Railroad Commissioners was made a special order in the Senate for Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. The Reassessment Bill is also a special order for Friday. Last Saturday was the last day for the introduction of bills, and there being now about eight hundred bills on file, the reports of the committees will be regarded with some little interest. That the session will be prolonged beyond the statutory sixty days seems almost inevitable. UNDER the fostering influence of the Coyote Bounty bill dozens of coyotes have grown where none grew before. a "New England Supper" at the school-house. The supper will be served at seven o'clock, so everybody can be there to enjoy this social reunion, and chat happily one with another over their cups, which cheer but do not inebriate. It is to be hoped a large number will be present. Mrs. Claudia of Los Angeles is visiting Mrs. Jas. A. Whittaker. Mrs. L. A. Foster goes to Redondo to-day (Thursday) for a few days visit. Dr. Johnson and sister of New York are occupying the cottage on Canadian avenue, formerly the home of R.C. Archibald. Mr. Pitblado is having his home enlarged previously to coming here to live. Will Potter of Centralia is building a fine house. One of the bills now engaging the attention of the Legislature will be a hard blow to the license people if it passes, but the saloon-keepers will rejoice. It provides that any county, city, township, town or public or municipal corporation shall have the power within its limits to license for the purpose of regulation and revenue the sale of wine and liquors and the maintenance of saloons or places where wines and liquors are sold, and to fix the rates of license tax thereon at an amount not to exceed $50 for each one-quarter of a year. No county, city, township or public or municipal corporation shall impose any tax upon the sale of wines or liquors, or the business of maintaining a saloon or place where wines and liquors are sold, the amount of which tax shall not exceed the sum of $50 for each one-quarter of a year. All Acts and parts of Acts inconsistent or in conflict with this Act are repealed, and the Act is to take effect immediately after its passage. An agreement for the sale of the Turn Verein Hall property in Los Angeles on Spring street, between Second and Third streets, was made the other day, between the Turn Verein Society and W. H. Perry. Mr. Perry is to give $100,000 net cash for the property when the sale is consummated. Some time ago Perry offered $80,000, but President Kuhats persisted in holding out for $100,000. The agreement gives the Turn Verein Society the right to occupy the ball for nearly a year. The society purchased a lot on Main street for $27,000 and proposes to build a Turn Verein Hall building that will surpass the present structure.
