THE OSTRICH FARM. ED ATHERTON WRITES ABOUT THE BIRDS AT THE PLACENTIA FARM. Edward Atherton writes as follows in the San Francisco Bulletin regarding the ostrich farm at Placentia; California may truly be called the land of diversified business, and ostrich raising is destined to become one of the many lucrative industries. In 1883 the California Ostrich Farming Company was formed. They purchased twenty-two birds for $21,000. In 1891 they sold out having found the business decidedly unprofitable. The y must have put in at least $50,000. With the comparatively small increase in the flock of birds they could not begin to pay interest on the amount of capital invested. Had teey increased their flock 100 per cent yearly, which in any judgment could easily have been done, the returns would no doubt have met the accumulating interest. The birds are now in the hands of the company's superintendent and a native South African. The flock now numbers 105. THE OSTRICH'S MENU. The ostrich will eat and thrive on a great many plants. Their principal food is alfalfa. They will do well on the natural grasses, such as alfalfa, burr clover and salt grass; also green barley and green cornstalks (cut half-inch in length), red or white clover, castue, with the thorns scorched off, grape pumice, beet pulp, calla lilies, banana trunks and sweet potato vines. Alfalfa hay and clover cut up and moistened is a good substitute when green feed is scarce, although green feed is indespensable at all times of the year. Grain is only necessary during the winter months. Potatoes, cabbage and most kinds of vegetables rank as luxuries. THE PLUME HARVEST. At fifteen months old a bird will yield its second crop of feathers, consisting of from forty to fifty plumes, and other short feathers, amounting to over a half pound in weight. The first crop of feathers, when the bird is only seven months old, is not of much value—from $2 to $5 a bird. At the present London prices a bird will yield from $20 to $40 worth of feathers at a plucking, the amount depending on the sex and condition of the bird. The egg shell may be another item of profit. A hen will lay as many as sixty eggs a year, if well fed. They commence laying at three and one-half years old. The feathers are equal, if not superior, to the African product. The larger the enclosures the better, for their habits are naturally roaming. Sandy or gravelly soil is preferable. An acre of their habitats can be ten feet if the food is ent MISCELLANEOUS! AYER'S Sarsaparilla Is superior to all other preparations claiming to be blood-purifiers. First of all, because the principal ingredient used in it is the extract of genuine Honduras sarsaparilla root, the variety richest in medicinal properties. Also, being raised expressly for the Company, is always fresh and of the very best kind. With equal discrimination and care, each of the other ingredients are selected and compounded. It is THE Superior Medicine because it is always the same in appearance, flavor, and effect, and being highly concentrated, only small doses are needed. It is therefore, the most economical blood-purifier in existence. It makes food nourishing, work pleasant, sleep refreshing, and life enjoyable. It searches out all impurities in the system and expels them harmlessly by the natural channels. AYER'S Sarsaparilla gives elasticity to the step, and imparts to the aged and infirm, renewed health, strength, and vitality. AYER'S Sarsaparilla Prepared by Dr.J.C.Ayer & Co., Lowell, Mass. The first crop of feathers, when the bird is only seven months old, is not of much value—from $2 to $5 a bird. The larger the enclosures the better, for their habits are naturally roaming. Sandy or gravelly soil is preferable. An acre of alfalfa will keep ten birds, if the feed is cut and given them; if pastured, only half this number will thrive. OUR FEATHERS GO TO LONDON AND BACK. The only one showing for profit at present is in the disposal of the feathers. Paradoxical as it may appear a parcel of feathers will bring a higher price in the London market than can be obtained here. The reason for this is that each buyer here requires a certain kind of feather, there being many varieties and colors. If the present product of the State were so divided there would not be enough of each kind to satisfy our buyers to bother about, so they go to the London sales and pick what they need in any quantity. When once the production is sufficiently large to hold a quarter or half-yearly sale, this obstacle will no doubt be obviated. The California feathers are sold in London, bought by American buyers and sent back here with a duty of 25 per cent ad valorem added to their value and selling price. No diseases have yet appeared among California ostrichs. In hatching 100 per cent of the eggs often turn out successful. Eggs require six weeks to hatch. The male assists in setting, filling the nest in the sun fully two-thirds of the time. The eggs are first-class eating, of rich flavor. EDWARD ATHERTON. The Funded Debt Question. Governor Markham, in his biennial message, expresses surprise that the people should have defeated the proposition to refund the State debt. The Governor is evidently impressed with the thought that it would have been wise to have adopted the proposition. However, when he comes to consider the debt disposal question he unconsciously hits upon precisely the reason for the action of the people. He says, and truly, that it is within the power of the Legislature to extend the debt, since do so is not "creating" a debt. The people did not desire the debt repudiated, nor did they contemplate a tax to secure its repayment. As the Legislature has the power to pay, it follows that it may extend the debt or provide for its payment in a series of years. The Governor says, except $251,000, the bonds representing the debt are held by the State for the benefit of its school and university funds, and inasmuch as the item of interest which the State pays upon the bonds is simply in lieu of a like amount which would have to be raised by taxation, did not the bonds exist, there can be no substantial objection to refunding them upon that ground. It is, in fact, a debt created by ourselves and due to ourselves." That is it exactly. The people knew the debt could be continued indefinitely, as it should be, and that to do so at six per cent interest would be a more comfortable method of contributing to the educational funds than to issue new bonds as proposed by the Refunding Act, at four per cent, to be followed by an annual tax levy of two cents to AYER'S Sarsaparilla Prepared by Dr.J.C.Ayer & Co., Lowell, Mass. In short, the people defeated the Act because they did not wish to drag the schools into the tax levy for two cents, when continuing the debt owed to themselves by themselves is a safer and less complicated method of raising the money, besides putting the question of the school tax outside of the political pale. It was because the people know from the debate had in the press upon the question, that to refund as proposed would cost a very considerable sum, and open the door for the enemies of free schools to assail their support, under a system of direct taxation, that the Act was defeated.
