We are indebted to B. M. Lelong, Secretary of the State Board of Horticultural Commissioners, for a copy of the report of the board for 1892. The report is voluminous, and treats exhaustively of the horticultural condition of some of the northern counties. The report upon Orange county, however, and especially that part of it which relates to Anaheim, is inaccurate and misleading; and might as well have been omitted. A few figures taken from the table of acres given as planted to trees in this county will suffice. Of bearing trees of all kinds the report gives us 12,206 acres; non-bearing 2,434; planted during the year, 2,558 acres. We have 5,285 acres in bearing oranges, according to the report, and 126 non-bearing walnuts, 1,467 acres in bearing, 1,125 non-bearing lemons, 251 acres in bearing, 230 non-bearing, and so on. These figures are simply proposterous. To give the county only 126 acres of non-bearing orange trees will cause a smile among those who have seen the hundreds upon hundreds of acres of new orchard set out in this immediate vicinity, to say nothing of the trees planted in the other sections of the county. As to walnuts, we have a total acreage of non-bearing trees around Anaheim equal to twice the amount given the county by the report. The same ratio will come near applying to the entire tabulated statement. The report erudits us with having planted 2,558 acres of fruit trees during the year. How do our horticultural friends like this? Five times this amount would come nearer the actual figures. The report of the condition of Orange county is if possible the worst of all. The accredited reporter of the board who, according to a note from Mr. Lelong, "visited this section," must have become infatuated with the "vine disease," for he gives about one-half of his space to a reference to the blight, which has long since passed out of date, and which comes near being forgotten in the many improvements that have blessed this section. Bonds is the irrigation district, amounting to $600. A HAPPY REUNION. THE FAMILY OF W. J. SMITH AND WIFE GATHER AT THE OLD HOME-STEAD CHRISTMAS DAY. All who are personally acquainted with our genial townman Wm. J. Smith cannot but read with interest and satisfaction an account of the happy event which marked for him this Christmastide, and made it to each member of his family one ever to be remembered as an ideal day, perfect in every respect. It is not always an easy matter, especially considering the numerous "twigs and branches" connected therewith, to bring together, without one breach, every member of a scattered household, in a general family reunion, as was held at this gentleman's spacious and comfortable home last Saturday and Sunday. For twenty-four years the large white house on Orangethorpe avenue has stood a veritable landmark in its place, and silently o'erlooked the progress and developments of time on its once lonely and neighborless surroundings; now, even its generous dimensions almost hidden by stately trees and orange groves, it still stands with wide open doors, welcoming to the most fitting gathering place the children born and reared beneath its sheltering eaves, who, though they have 'dispersed and wandered far away,' where other duties and family ties have bound them, still look and refer to the one common center as "home." As early as Saturday morning they began coming, and before nightfall all were there under the loved old roof; the twelve sons and daughters of one father, with nearly that number of grandechildren, and all such a boundless, unlimited amount of good cheer and happiness. For the first time in many years the spacious rooms enclosed the rightful flock of the homefold. Clustering now around the cheerful fireplace were the matronly and manly faces of those who, as girls and boys had so long since elumored there in eager inspection of the bounties of dear old Santa Claus. Who could reallily but with a sigh of regret the numerous little stockings so often hung in impatient anticipation before that very fire-place? Who could in fancy see again the fairy-like Christmas tree, by mysterious fingers arranged in some dark corner, to the delight of their childish hearts, on many a by-gone Christmas night, without a tinge of sadness in the thought that it was by-gone in all reality? Many were the reminiscences told that brought forth peals of laughter, or perchance a hastily concealed tear; but regrets or sadness could not long prevail where was such universal joy and thanksgiving, and almost without cessation there was an exhilarating flow of mirth and hilarity. Once again from the old walls resounded the simple little songs of the early school part represented a Sunday visited by Long Ago (dress Arab), who reproduces these singles so crowned event when the certain went up regular Dutch windmill miller inside. The accredited reporter of the board who, according to a note from Mr. Lolong, "visited this section," must have become infatuated with the "vine disease," for he gives about one-half of his space to a reference to the blight, which has long since passed out of date, and which comes near being forgotten in the many improvements that have blessed this section. Bonds is the irrigation district, amounting to $600,000, according to this precious document, are "not yet sold." And so on to the end. It is dollars to doughnuts that this "accredited agent" was never in the county—at least, judging from his preposterous report, in this section. The report, the note from Mr. Lolong informs us, is the first work of the kind ever issued by the board, and we shall hope for the good of the country that it will be the last. A tax-ridden people, rather than stand another such outrage, will rise in their might and demand the abolishment of the board, its accredited agent and the Secretary. The ghost of the Teachers' Pension Bill will stalk through the halls of the Legislature again this winter. Twice has it appeared in the council halls of the State, demanding recognition and that it be framed into a law; and twice has it been relegated back to the limbo whence it came. Why the teachers should deserve a pension—which the bill provides they shall have after twenty-five years of service in the school room—is one of the things that is past finding out. The trouble with many of the teachers is that they are too much of politicians, and not enough of educators. No Teachers' Pension Bill! A TELEGRAM from Mr. F. G. Ryan, dated Los Angeles yesterday afternoon, says that the report printed in the Journal last Saturday, to the effect that he had apologized to Mr. B. F. Porter in an altercation at the meeting of the Directors of the irrigation district held last Thursday, is an atrocious falshood, so far as the reported apology is concerned. The official vote of the State has been announced, and shows that California elects eight Cleveland electors and one for Harrison, the vote standing as follows: Republicans—L. Hausoom, 117,605; J. R. Willoughby, 117,605; H. V. Morehouse, 117,711; Ilae Hecht, 117,613; J. A. Waymiro, 117,717; M. L. Merry, 117,670; William Carson, 117,747; J. C. Campbell, 117,743; Thomas R. Bard, 118,027; Democratic—J. A. Fichler, 118,151; William Graves, 118,109; R. P. Hammond, 118,112; Jackson Hatch, 118,096; R. A. Long, 118,-174; J. D. Lynch, 118,092; M. Rosenthal, 118,008; W. L. Silman, 117,962; J. F. Thompson, 117,840. This electa Thomas R. Bard over J. F. Thompson, and is the second time in the stockings so often hung in impatient anticipation before that very fire-place? Who could in fancy see again the fairy-like Christmas tree, by mysterious fingers arranged in some dark corner, to the delight of their childish hearts, on many a by-gone Christmas night, without a tinge of sadness in the thought that it was by-gone in all reality? Many were the reminiscences told that brought forth peals of laughter; or perchance a hastily concealed tear; but regrets or sadness could not long prevail where was universal joy and thanksgiving, and almost without cessation there was an exhilarating flow of mirth and bilarity. Once again from the old walls resounded the simple little songs of the early school days, once again all joined in the old familiar games, father and mother entering in the tumultuous romp with renewed youth and as much zeal and enthusiasm as any of the rest. Through the halls was now heard ringing in sweet childhood voices the call of "grandpa" where formerly was echoed back the cry "papa;" and grandpa responded with such boyish merry promptness as to make the application seem a misnerom. The most interesting and heartily enjoyed feature of Saturday evening's programme was when the father, responding to the entreaties of his children and grandchildren, went to the center of the floor and danced a jig, keeping perfect time to the tune "Yankee Doodle," in a litle quickstep, which very few men of half his age would venture to imitate. The applause and roar of laughter was almost deafening, and at the finish he seemed in danger of being smothered with hugs and kisses. Of no small consequence in this very important affair was the sumptuous dinner served at six o'clock Christmas day. The two young ladies still remaining in the old home had spared me effort or expense in the preparation of a spread to do justice to the occasion. The table, eighteen feet long, was a perfect dream of tempting lovely delicacies and beautiful decorations fit to delight the eyes and appetite of the most fastidious epicureo. Covers were laid for thirty-three. Following is the menu: Roast Turkey (oyster dressing). Roast pig (olive dressing). Cranberry Sauce. Green Peas. Green Corn. Sweet Potatoes. Salads. Lobster. Potato. Sardine. Celery. Pickles—Olive. Eggs. Peach. Entrees. French Eggs. Macaroni. Cakes—Fruit. Variety. Chocolate. Banana. Mince Pie (cheese.) Bananas. Oranges. Apples. Pearls. Grapes. Nuts. Raisins.Candles. Coffee. All present made very practical demonstrations of their appreciation of the "goodics" sat before them, and their appetites being appeased, they did not fail to remember absent friends, and many daintily laden little boxes burdened the mails the following day. It was indeed a matchless merry Christmas, without one incident to mar her perfect enjoyment and harmony, and near the midnight hour the festivities were appropriately brought to a close by the assembled voices raised in singing "Praise God from Whom All Blossoms Flow." The members of the family circle present were Mr. and Mrs.W.J Smith of Orangethorpe, Mr. and Mrs.D.S Kearney and family of San Diego, Mr. and Mrs.J.B Moore and family of Ontario, Mr. and Mrs.Edwin Clark and family of Capistrano, Mr. and Mrs.Lyn Lyman and family of Moreno, Clarence Smith of Orangethorpe, Albert V.Smith of Fullerton,Misses H.F. and Lauretta Smith of Orangethorpe, Will J.Smith Jr.,of Los Angeles,Morris, Finish chorus and prayer quaint and Chorus.Thupu Who Still St. St.Nicholas.List of Queen Winter Long Age Storm King Jack Frost Shepherd H.C.House Winter's Attendants Autumn North Wind East Wind South Wind Aurora Borealis Snow Ice President Daisy Charm Lena Grace Harry Charley Card of T To friends and neighbors in his orange brickyard below the S. law will be prosecuted to this parties trespassing upon Mr.And Mrs. Take Note The undersigned hereby trespassers in his orange brickyard below the S. law will be prosecuted to this parties trespassing upon Mr.And Mrs. LOST.-Saturday noon Cape, between Ernest P on Palm,Sycamore.P Adele streets to Episcopi will please return to Er receive reward. The People's party vote ranged from 25,170 to 25,311, and the Prohibition vote from 7,921 to 8,096. Four of the Constitutional amendments submitted to the people were defeated by decisive majorities, as follows: To prolong the session of the Legislature to 100 days, 153,831 against, 36,442 for; in reference to the incurring of indebtedness by county, city or township Boards of Education, 59,-548 against, 18,942 for; increasing the salary of the Lieutenant-Governor, 128,743 against, 43,456 for; permitting the Governor to approve certain appropriations in a bill, while rejecting others, 87,708 against, 69,286 for. The only amendment carried is that relating to the formation of charters by cities of 3,000, which received 114,617 votes in favor, to 42,078 against. Of the other propositions submitted to the people, the most odious of all, the San Francisco Depot Act, is carried by a vote of 91,296 for, to 90,430 against, a bare majority of 866. It is not too much to say that the returns in San Francisco were jugged to defeat the will of the people. The proposition to elect United States Senators by direct vote of the people is carried by 187,-758 for, to 13,342 against. The educational qualification is also carried by 151,320 for, to 41,059 against. The scheme to refund the State debt is defeated by 85,604 against, to 79,900 in favor of it. The State elects three Republican Congressmen and four Democratic, the vote in this district being: Bowers, 15,856; Wellborn, 14,869. LORING PICKERING; editor of the San Francisco Call; is dead. CHRISTMAS CANTATA. THREE HUNDRED PEOPLE GATHER AT THE PLACENTIA SCHOOL HOUSE TO WITNESS IT. PLACENTIA, Cal., Dec. 27, 1892. The Christmas Cantata given by the Placentia Choral Society was postponed until Monday evening on account of the rain. The Fullerton band rendered some fine music while the people were being seated. The house was packed, also door, hallway and windows. Three hundred people had assembled in anticipation of a good time, and they were not disappointed. The curtain went up at eight o'clock. The play was entitled "St. Nicholas." The opening address was well delivered. The orchestra accompaniment was very pleasant; the musicians were Miss Sarah Crowther, Messrs. Walter and Eddie Crowther and Mr. Alms. The costumes were very pretty and appropriate. Queen Winter was robed in black and covered with snow-flakes. Storm King in a costume of gray and black, covered with gilt stripe; Jack Frost was in white, sparkling with frost; Autumn was in a dark red robe strewn with grasses and leaves, while in her hand she carried a basket of fruit; North Wind was dressed in blue tarlatan; East Wind in white tarlatan; South Wind, pink; West Wind, blue; Anura Berealis, pink, white, red and blue tarlatan; Ice, in green; Snow, in white. The first part represented Queen Winter holding her court during which she is very prettily crowned by Clara and Daisy. The second merry Christmas without one incident to mar the perfect enjoyment and harmony, and near the midnight hour the festivities were appropriately brought to a close by the assembled voices raised in singing "Praise God from Whom all Blossings Flow." During the solo "Weary not, Angels are Near," there appeared two angels in an arch-way in the back ground. The sule in this part were well sung. St. Nicholas's part could not have been acted better and called forth many a laugh. But the third part was the crowning event of the evening. When the curtain went up we discovered a regular Dutch windmill with a real Dutch miller inside. There being no wind blowing, St. Nicholas proposes calling on the Brownies to get up a breeze, whereupon thore barrats out of barrels and the mill four full-fledged Brownies, who, with their belows, soon blow up a strong breeze, and the wheel begins to revolve and the presents to be ground out. There were the usual jokes ground out. There were tin shaving cups, wooden mustache cups, a wooden pen for the clerk of the district, a cactus with a wooden crank for the cactus crank, and hollow oranges for the president of the Farmers' Union, besides other jokes. The Brownies were Hartwell Bradford, the dude; Louis Edwardson, the Chinanau; George Jonsson, the Indian; Peroy Bradford, a common Brownie. Many thanks are due our worthy conductor, Win Crowther, and his estimable daughter, for a very pleasant evening's entertainment, and we all hope that there will be many more in store for us. "I am a pioneer in this county, having been here 20 years. Four years ago my little son Ellery became blood-polished by impure virus in vaccination. His arm swelled terribly, causing great agony; physicians said the arm must be amputated, and even then his recovery would be doubtful. One day I read about a blood purifier, now to me, and was surprised to learn that it was prepared by C. L. Hood, with whom I used to go to school in Chelsea, Vt. I decided to have my boy try Hood's Sarsparilla, and was much gratified when it seemed to help him. He continued to grow better as we gave him the Sarsparilla, and having used 8 bottles is now entirely cured. As Hood's Sarsparilla has accomplished such wonderful results, I recommend all I possibly can." JENNIE M. SLEEGER, Upper Lake, Lake Co., Cal. The City Treasurer Of Lowell Mass., says: "The above is from my brother Ernest I recognized. I also glad to testify to the excellence of Hood's Sarsparilla, and to say that C. I. Hood & Co. are considered one of the most reliable firms in New England." LOAN. FROM $4,000 down to $500 Apply to L. A. MENDELSON. First National Bank Building. Santa Ana. TOYS! Toys! To toys! AT.
