CHRONICLES:
PAPER READ BY B. V. GARWOOD BEFORE THE CHRISTIAN ENDEAVORERS.
At the celebration of the second anniversary of the Y. P. S. C. E. in this city last Friday evening, the following paper was read by B. V. Garwood:
Ye have all heard how it has been written in the Chronicles of Sara, the Sorrise, how it came to pass in the reign of Hiram, the Priest, that Stephen, of the tribe of the Kieferites, called together all the young men and maidens who were wont to assemble in the temple; and how, when all the young men and maidens were gathered together in companies, of whom Edgar, the Chief Ruler, had made Lura, of the tribe of Jones, Chief Guide, made ready a great feast, in the Inn, called Del Campo, and gathered upon the tables of the Inn, many things good to eat, the names of which were not known unto the people. And they gathered a great company of singers, and players upon instruments. And they said: "Let all the people come;" and there was gathered together in the Inn, in the fourth month, and the two and twentieth day of the mouth, a very great company. And the singers sang, and the players played, and the estates sitte, and all for a long time remembered the gathering of the Endeavorites as the Inn.
And it came to pass about the first of the sixth month that Hattie, whose surname was Parker, who was one of the teachers of the youth, said unto the chief rulers of the schools: "It is very meet that Iarry not here until the school shall close, but that I journey far off to the north land. Grant, I beseech you, that I be released from my bond and my bishopric let another take." Add when they saw that it was very good, they said: "It is well; go in peace." And one Arthur, whose surname was Hubbs, took her unto himself in marriage, and they journeyed into the land of the Sonomas, and dwelt there. And this same Hattie, whose surname now is Hubbs, has called together the youths and maidons in that land of the Sonomas and has formed there a band of Endeavorites, and that band of Endeavorites is still standing where she placed it, a memorial of her identity and zeal, even unto this day.
And it came to pass that Sara, who had been the scribe, and Lura, of the tribe of Jones, and others who had been long with the Endeavorites said: "It is not meet that we tarry longer in this place. Let us go and seek out a more goodly land and dwell there. And they went even as they spake; and the Endeavorites yearned for the presence and help and counsel of those who sought a more goodly land, yeaven for many days."
And it came to pass that Edgar, the chief ruler, had many cares and was often absent from the temple, and was often seen driving in great haste toward the seashore. And

PAPER READ BY B. V. GARWOOD BEFORE THE CHRISTIAN ENDEAVORERS.
At the celebration of the second anniversary of the Y. P. S. C. E. in this city last Friday evening, the following paper was read by B. V. Garwood:
Ye have all heard how it has been written in the Chronicles of Sara, the Scribe, how it came to pass in the reign of Hiram, the Priest, that Stephen, of the tribe of the Kiefferites, called together all the young men and maidens who were wont to assemble in the temple; and bow, when all the young men and maidens gathered together in the temple, in the second year of the reign of Benjamin, the great King, and in the first year of Hiram, the Priest, in the twelfth month and the seventh day of the month, that Stephen, of the tribe of the Kiefferites, stood up in the temple before all the people, and said, "Go to now let us join unto this temple a band of young men and maidens, who shall be called Endeavorites." And all these young men and maidens stood upon their feet and said with a loud voice, "It is well; it is very well." And all these who stood upon their feet and took on themselves the rows of the Endeavorites, were two young men and three and ten in a deus, and ten young men and maidens who said, "We will be helpers to you in this work." And Stephen, the Kiefferite, was made Chief Ruler of the Endeavorites. Now the other rules of the band, and all the acts of the bad, from the time when Stephen called the people together in the temple, even untothe time the band gathered together in the house of Hiram, the Priest, in memoryof that day, are they not all written in the Chronicles of Sara, the Scribe? And did not Sara, the Scribe, read them all before all the people who were gathered together that day in the house of Hiram to Priest?
Now it came to pass that as Stephen, the Chief Ruler of the Endeavorites, and they who had been appointed as helpers to the Chief Ruler, were looking about to see what they might do to make the Endeavorites more use in the land, that they saw that many of the young men and maidens were very young, and hey said, "It is well that we set aside these younger members of the band, and such older young men and maidens as will join with them into a Junior band of Endeavorites. And the younger members of the band saw that it was very good, and it can to pass in the eleventh month and two twentieth day of the month, that the junior band of Endeavorites was formed. And Maud, whose surname was toberee, and Lura, of the tribe of Jones, were appointed to look after the going out adthe comings in of the Junior band of Endeavorites. And the members of thiband did hold their meetings on the firstday of the week, which is commonly called Sabbath day, at about the middle of eighth hour of the day, and did spend theirtime in singing hymns and reading out ofhe Scriptures and in prayer. And much prob was gained unto them in this thing. And its Junior band of Endeavorites is continued unto this day; and Adele, of the household of Mossman, is the Chief Ruler thereof, and Addie, whose surname is Wallop, is the Chief Scribe. And Perl, whose surname is Roberts, was sent to the great gathering of Endeavorites, which met in the southland, in the city of Bay-nClimate. All they formed among the Junior Endeavorites a band of sweet singers, who sing very nice at the gatherings of the Junior Endeavorites, in the temple and at the social gatherings of the Endeavorites, as they meet from time to time, and the band is still standing where she placed it,a memorial of her fidelity and zeal, even unto this day.
And it came to pass that Sara, who had been the scribe, and Lura, the tribe of Jones, and others who had been long with the Endeavoritsaid: "It is not meet that we tarry longer in this place.Let us go and seek out a more goodly land and dwell there. And they went even as they spake;and the Endeavoritesyearned forthe presence and help and counselof those who soughta more goodly land, yeaavenfor many days.

thing. And its Junior band of Endeavorites is continue unto this day; and Adele, of

whose surnames Roberts, was sent to the great gathering of Endeavorites, which met in the southland, in the city of Bay-In-Climate. And they formed among the Junior Endeavorites a band of sweet singers, who sing very nice at the gatherings of the Junior Endeavorites, in the temple and at the social gatherings of the Endeavorites, as they meet from time to time, and the band of singers add much enjoyment to all who gather there.
And the banl of Endeavorites grew and waxed strong and prospered. And it came to pass in the last week of the twelfth month, in the second year of the reign of Hiram; the Priest, that Stephen, the Chief Ruler, called all the Endeavorites together in the temple and said unto them, "It is meet that you choose for yourselves new rulers, who shall go forth to lead you in whatsoever ye shall attempt to do during the months, yea the six months that shall come after." And Benjamin the son of Jesse, who had been teacher in the land, stood up and said, "It is well that Stephen, the Kiefferite, should again to be chosen Chief Ruler. He has led the Endeavorites safely those many days, and the honor and the glory and the renown of Chief Ruler belongeth unto him and should be given unto him, because of the many good deeds done unto the Endeavorites."
But Stephen said, "Nay, it is not well. My honor and renown and labors as Chief Ruler of all the tribes of Endeavorites in the southland are even now greater than I can bear. Give, O worthy Endeavorites, this honor and renown unto another." And the people heard what Stephen, the Chief Ruler, said and it was very good. And they chose Edgar, of the tabel of the Mercaenaus, to be Chief Ruler in the room of Stephen, the Kiefferite. And Iura, of the tribe of Jones, was made second ruler, and Guy, whose surname is Holman, was chosen to write the acts of the Endeavorites, and Maud, whose surname was Roberts, was made Keeper of the Treasury.
And Edgar, the Chief Ruler, divided up his people into five companies. To one company he said, "Go forth, and search among the people; look out and find out who there is among them that will join with us and help us." To another he said, "Look ye, to the gatherings of the people in the temple, and choose ye from time to time one to be the leaker of the people as they gather together in the temple." And to the other companies he gave their several duties. And one of the household of Boyd! And has he not already read it before all the people? And all the other acts of the Endeavorites have they not all been recorded in the books of the Endeavorites by Mary, of the tribe of the Krasomers, who is now the chief scribe of the Endeavorites? And all the sets of each Endeavorites, and the thoughts and motives of each one, are these not already recorded in that book kept by the great Chief Ruler and Scribe of all Endeavorites, is which book no omissions are ever ever found and no mistakes ever occur?

About Wild Goose.
Colusa county, in California, is famous for its wheat fields. The harvest is abundant and the farmer's labor is generously rewarded by nature in a genial clime. Many other countries are not less favorably circumnanced. But there appears to be one drawback. A plague of wild goose settles on the land when what we call winter sots in. Ducks and quail are not serious disturbers of a farmer's tranquility. They may even be made profitable adjuncts of his business. But goose are heavy and hearty consumers of grasses and the tender shoots of growing

And one surname was Hubbs, took itself in marriage, and they the land of the Sonomas, and this same Hattie, whose Hubbs, has called together maidens in that land of the formed there a band of Enthavar that band of Endeavorites where she placed it, a meadality and zeal, even unto pass, that Sara, who had and Lura, of the tribe of who had been long with said: "It is not meet that in this place. pass that Edgar, the chief cares and was often absent and was often seen driving toward the seashore. And grain, and a farmer who beholds clouds of wild goose settling on his land, a thousand to the acre, is seriously agitated to know how to get rid of them. There is nothing for it but rifle practice. A few good Winchester will thin the swarm settled upon the acres and alarm the survivors, but then they only take a short flight to some other cultivator's land, and begin anew their eackle as they gobble grass. The number of goose that invade the wheat fields are well nigh incredible. A Colusa county girl is credited with having killed 9,835 goose last year. With sixteen shots from her Winchester she laid low sixty-seven birds. With 5,000,000 birds spread over 5,000 acres the feast is not surprising. The fact that there is a small bounty on goose heads, indicates how serious the nuisance is becoming. The farmer requires the aid of the taxpayer to protect himself.
There is one remedy for this goose invasion. A new industry should be started. The wild goose, according to a San Francisco contemporary, should be canned and exported. Cooked into a gelatine, or simply boiled or roasted, it would find a market in the East and in Europe. The Australians are returning their peat, the rabbit, to Europe in cooked form. California can just as well export this good food supply which we cannot consume locally. A farmer can lease his acres to sportmen, the sportman can sell big daily bag to the canner and the canner will have no trouble in finding a market. Only in this fashion can the depredations of the wild goose be put down. In this way the farmer will have his profit both in winter and summer, and many of the California farmers need double profits. Game canning is an enterprise that capitalists may venture on with confidence. We have numerous kinds of canning in fish and meat. Why not in this wild game, especially on this coast where the population is sparse and the territory vast?
Odd Mist of Information.
The healthiest spot in the world seems to be a little hamlet in France named Aumone. There are only forty inhabitants, twenty-three of whom are over 80 years of age.
pated that upon her trials, when loaded to a displacement of something over 14,000 tons, she will attain a speed of twenty-six and nearly land miles per hour; and she will, not improbably, exceed even this.
Upon her voyage she is to make a continuous speed from port to port of twenty-one knots, or twenty-four and one-tenth land miles; and this speed is tolerably certain to be improved upon after she has made a few trips. It is understood that her weight upon the day of the launch will be 9,000 tons. Her engines are ready for her, but no part of them will be put on board until she is in the water. The machinery consists of phosphor bronze screws, driven by two pairs of triple expansion engines, each capable of indicating up to 15,000 horse power.
Each engine has two cranks and five cylinders. There will be twelve double-ended boilers each with eight furnaces, and there will be six stokholds. The funnels, two in number, will be the largest ever made. The launching of so huge a vessel will present considerable difficulties as the river at Govan is narrow. The Campania will be sent into the water obliquely, with her stern down stream, will then be towed up the river to a basin in which, with care, she can be turned around, and will finally be taken to a specially prepared jetty close to the launching ways, and will there be completed for sea. Excepting her rudder, she is entirely of British construction. The rudder, formed of a single steel plate, is so wide that no British firmer possessed the necessary machinery for rolling it, and the work in consequence had to be entrusted to Krupp of Essen.

The healthiest spot in the world seems to be a little hamlet in France named Aumone. There are only forty inhabitants, twenty-three of whom are over 80 years of age, and one is over 100.
Dentists say that the greatest difficulty they meet with in their work is the matching of false teeth with the natural teeth of their customers. The tooth factories supply dentists with rings upon which are strung thin metal bars, each carrying a tooth at its extremity. There are twenty-five of these sample teeth that run all the way from nearly white to a shade that is almost olive. Some of the twenty-five usually match the patient's teeth, and at any rate, enable the dentist to match the teeth by application at the factory.

Of unprofessional strong men the Czar is a splendid example. His fingers possess extraordinary strength. He can twist a nail with them until it resembles a sock-screw and then double up a silver coin in his palm.
During the times of George I and II, the wedding ring, though placed upon the usual finger at the time of the marriage, was sometimes worn on the thumb, in which position it is often seen in the portraits of the titled ladies of those days. It is now absolutely necessary to use a ring at the English marriage service. The placing of the ring on the book is a remnant of the ancient custom of blessing the ring by sprinkling holy water in the form of a cross. This is all done by the Roman Catholic priests. The Paritans attempted the abolition of the ring. The Quakers don't use a ring at the service because of its heatenish origin, but many wear them afterward. The Swiss Protestants do not use a ring either at the service or afterwards.

The Giant Cunarder.
The largest vessel, save the Great Eastern, that has ever been built will be launched on the Clyde, from the yards of the Fairfield Company. She is one of the two new liners that have been ordered for the service of the Cunard Company, and she is to be called the Campania. It is expected that she will be completed in time to make her first trip to New York in April next, immediately prior to the opening of the Chicago exhibition. The Great Eastern was 692 feet long by 83 feet broad.

Saved From Death by Onions.
There has no doubt been more lives of children saved from death in croup or whooping cough by the use of onions than any other known remedy; our mothers used to make poultices of them, or a syrup, which was always effectual in breaking up a cough or cold. Dr. Gunn's Omnion Syrup is made by combining a few simple remedies with it which make it more effective as a medicine and destroys the taste and odor of the onion. Fifty cents. Sold at Leeds' drug store.
