A Fortunate Greenhorn. "When I came to this country," said a merchant recently, "I was a lad fresh from old Ireland. My first home was with friends in Cambridge. In one of my walks, before I had been here a week, I came across a queer, old fashioned house that interested me immensely. I described it to my friends, and learned that it was the home of the poet Longfellow. That increased my interest. "The next day I went again to the queer house and stood gawkily looking at it and at an old gentleman sitting in the yard. I stared so long that the old gentleman noticed it, and coming to the fence asked me what I was looking at. I told him that I wanted to see the man who lived there, because I had read his works in the schools of Ireland. "The old gentleman asked me what I knew about Longfellow's writings, and I told him I know enough about one poem to repeat every word of it. "When he heard that he asked me to come into the house and recite the poem to him. I went in and repeated 'The Village Blacksmith' without making a mistake. That pleased my listener, and putting on his hat he asked me to walk with him. He said that I should have something that many people had asked for and tried in vain to get. "He stopped under a big tree and said: 'This is the tree under which that poem you recited was written. The village smithy was under this tree.'" "Then the aged poet marched up and with his own hand broke off a branch of that famous tree and gave it to me."—Boston Herald. Cups Used by Tea Tasters. The teacups used by tea merchants in tasting tea are made especially for the purpose of the finest French china and have no handles or saucers. The teas are carefully weighed out and placed in the cups, when boiling water is poured on them. Tea tasters nowadays depend more upon the odor than the taste of teas and some of the most expert do not taste them at all, but rely entirely upon smelling them. — Philadelphia Ledger. Within a year past the recruiting flag has been hung out in many of our New England towns and villages by officers of the regular army detailed for the purpose of gathering volunteers to fill up the ranks of Uncle Sam's forty regiments of infantry, cavalry and artillery. Once recruiting stations were maintained only in big cities like New York and Boston, but the material secured there was not of the best. Secretary Proctor had an idea that the country youth were better qualified, morally, mentally and physically, for a soldier's life than the dregs of our floating urban population, and under his direction recruiting parties, each headed by a commissioned officer, were sent into rural New England, New York and some portions of the west. The experiment is said to be working admirably so far as the welfare of the army is concerned, though the officers do not enjoy the necessity of moving from one town to another, drumming up recruits as a crommercial traveler drums up trade. The new system of enlistment and the various minor reforms have had a marked and instantaneous effect upon the character of the army. The soldiers are happier and more contented, and desertions are fewer than they have been for many years.—Boston Journal. Some Population Statistics. In 1850 the states and territories west of the Mississippi river had an aggregate population of 1,720,344, and the country west of the Missouri, excluding Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Missouri, had a population of only 133,597; in other words the population of the vast region west of the Missouri in 1850 was not as large as the population of Omaha is today.—Edward Rosswater's Omaha Address. A Deposit of Cold Lead. Cashier (to tough looking customer)—Do you wish to make a deposit? Tough Looking Customer (presenting pistol)—If necessary. Out wid do booddle!—Kate Field's Washington. Deadhead Fiends. The condition of mind which follows the receipt of a free pass has always formed a most mysterious study to me. A perfectly normal and well balanced brain has been turned topsy turvy in a minute by the receipt of a free pass and never seemed to regain its equilibrium. THE FACT That AYER'S Sarsaparilla cures others of Scrofulous Diseases, Eruptions, Boils, Eczema, Liver and Kidney Diseases, Dyspepsia, Rheumatism, and Catarrh should be convincing that the same course of treatment will cure you. All that has been said of the wonderful cures effected by the use of AYER'S Sarsaparilla during the past 50 years, truthfully applies to day. It is, in every sense, The Superior Medicine. Its curative properties, strength, effect, and flavor are always the same; and for whatever blood diseases AYER'S Sarsaparilla is taken, they yield to this treatment. When you ask for AYER'S Sarsaparilla don't be induced to purchase any of the worthless substitutes, which are mostly mixtures of the cheapest ingredients, contain no sarsaparilla, have no uniform standard of appearance, flavor, or effect, are blood-purifiers in name only, and are offered to you because there is more profit in selling them. Take AYER'S Sarsaparilla Prepared by Dr. J. C. Ayer & Co., Lowell, Mass. Sold by all Druggists; Price $1; six bottles; $5. Cures others, will cure you Castoria For Infants and Children. Castoria contains no Morphine or other narcotic property. Notice to W Office of the County Orange County, Sta PURSUANT TO AN ORDER OF Supervisors of Orange county on the 25th day of June Deadhead Flends. The condition of mind which follows the receipt of a free pass has always formed a most mysterious study to me. A perfectly normal and well balanced brain has been turned toop turvy in a minute by the receipt of a free pass and never seemed to regain its equilibrium. There is no spectacle in the world more common than that of the man who takes the manager out to dinner, treats him to the most elaborate affair that he can buy and then falls into a condition of infantile delight when he receives the pass for which he has been working. Ordinary persons will buy no end of champagne for a theatrical man if they think there is such a thing as a pass in sight. They struggle and scheme and work for it, apparently the monetary side of it never forces itself upon their judgment. Why a man will spend ten dollars in treating another in order to procure for nothing seats which he could have bought for three dollars is a mystery. It is said that after a man has once seen a play from a deadhead seat, he can never witness a performance afterward from a seat which he has purchased. After the habit is once formed the victim is forever afterward irresponsible. Blakely Hall in Brooklyn Eagle. Salvation Army Women Go Alone. In the course of a talk by Mrs. Ballington Booth somebody asked her if the Salvation women did not need escorts in going about the city's notorious quarters as they do, and she told him, "No; it would take too much time to protect the escorts." The women are fearless and are almost never molested.—New York Times. Photographs at Any Time.
