LETTERS FROM THE PEOPLE.
The Question of the Overflow of the River.
Editor Gazette.—For the last three years spasmodic efforts have been made to improve the borders of the Santa Ana river about two miles above Anaheim for the purpose of preventing an overflow. Engineer Kellogg has taken a good deal of interest in this matter, as he knows how important it is not to allow the river to make a new bed at that particular place, on account of the bend it makes at that point. When the Santa Fe railroad, several years ago, built its road above Anaheim towards Orange, a bridge was made over the Santa Ana river with the opening for the river on the left or Orange side, while in the Anaheim side of the riverbed was made a strong dam for the road bed. This, it was thought, would protect the north side of the riverbed very effectually, but it was just the reverse, as it turned out. A little below this open ing a little island was formed, which throws the stream to the north or Anaheim side of the river. The consequence is that the stream has eaten away several hundred acres of land, and is continually washing out, year after year, and taking a weathely course, which if not stopped soon, will be the cause of bringing the river direct to Anaheim. The riverbed below the Santa Fe bridge is now so wide that all the sand, of which the river brings down enormous quantities during the rainy season, is deposited on this wide expanse of riverbed, as there is not current enough to carry the sand down to the ocean, and the consequence is, the riverbed is rising above the borders of the river, and the waters are bound to make a new channel if not prevented from doing so by artificial banks. Every year more sand is deposited in this way, and every year the work of confining the river to its natural bed is becoming more difficult and more costly. Mr. Kellogg said last year that the first thing to do was to take the above mentioned island away, so that the water could flow straight down the riverbed, and not be deflected against the right or Anaheim bank. This, he thought, would cost five hundred dollars. Then piles should be driven in a straight line down the river, far enough to pass the dangerous bend. These piles must be covered with boards to keep the stream out, or perhaps brush could be used, which would be cheaper but not so effective as boards. The great question which now comes up is,—Where is the money to come from to do this work? Everybody who has seen the river at the bend spoken of, or has seen the overflows which we have had before, knows the danger which a heavy rainy season may do our town, but when it comes to opening the Mrs. Marchant of San Bernardino delivered an excellent discourse on the subject of "Prophecy, Ancient and Modern." The hall was filled with eager and attentive listeners. At two o'clock in the afternoon we attended the Children's Progressive Lyceum in Library Hall. The exercises were very interesting, but seemed a little old to me, being so very different from the Sunday school exercises I have always been accustomed to. After the Lyceum exercises Miss Susan B. Johnson of Long Beach gave an inspirational discourse: In the evening Mr. Wheeler of Oakland delivered a lecture, after which his wife gave a number of platform tests. Monday afternoon was conference meeting when any or all were permitted to express their belief or unbelief in the phenomena of spiritualism. If any one is laboring under the delusion that spiritualism is dying out, if they will go among and mingle with the people up here awhile, that delusion will vanish. And they will find that it is spreading not only among the common people, but many of the leading men and women of the country are firm believers in its doctrines, but who, on account of its unpopularity in the community in which they live, never mention it to any one unless they think they are of the same belief. In fact they are a people that never try to force their belief on any one. I saw no work going on on Sunday, but was told if any one had any work they wanted to do they went ahead and did it; and no notice was taken of it, and while they do not regard one day as any more holy than another, they almost invariably take Sunday as a day of rest and recreation and for the improvement of their mental and spiritual faculties. I only heard one or two say anything against the religion of others, except to denounce in unmeasured terms any and all religious legislation in our government, whose constitution guarantees to every one the right to worship God according to the dictates of his own conscience.

Senator Murphy on the Tariff.
The tariff debate rages, of course, writes Arthur McEwen in the Express. Senator Paddy Murphy was given an alarming proof of this a few evenings ago. The Senator is only about five feet high, but he is a journalist and has a great head. On Third street he encountered Monohan, a six-foot constituent, and it being necessary to say something after the respectful handshake, Murphy remarked.

water could now straight down the rivered,

Anahaim bank. This, he thought, would

question which now comes up is,—Where is
the money to come from to do this work?
Everybody who has seen the river at the
bond spoken of, or has seen the overflows
which we have had before, knows the danger
which a heavy rainy season may do our
town, but when it comes to opening the
pursue-strings, very few are ready to contribute their share. The danger lies not in
the overflow, which, as all the surrounding
country is nearly level, spreads over a large
expanse of land and is in most cases rather
beneficial than otherwise, but lies in the fact
that the river, as its banks are not able
to confine its waters, will start a new bed
from that bend direct to East street, and
once the river has made a new bed and filled
up the old bed entirely with sand, it will
cost a great deal more, hay will be almost
impossible to return the river to its old bed.
So far we have had overflows only, but let
the river run from the bond towards Anahiem
for a few hours only and the mischief is done.
With the light soil it runs over
and a fall of 14 feet to the mile, in 24 hours
it would have its new bed made and nothing
more could be done to get rid of it again.
I write these lines for publication, if you
think they may bring out the views of some
of our townsmen, who may know the means
to arouse the attention of the whole community. We must depend on our own
resources, as from the Supervisors and from
the Town Council we cannot expect any help whatever.
From New Jerusalem.
Editor Gazette.—Thinking some of my many friends would be surprised and also pleased to know that I had been permitted to enter the pearly gates and walk the gold paved streets of the New Jerusalem (minus the gates of Pearl, and sand-paved streets instead of Gold), I thought I would write you a few lines to say that we arrived here this evening about 6 o'clock and after conversing with a few of the leading citizens here, I found it to be a Democratic town of about 300 inhabitants. Two stores, two restaurant, two blacksmith shops, two churches and three saloons. I think it averages up with churches and saloons rather better than any town we have passed through, the usual average being about two saloons to one churub, and yet this certainly is a Christian nation, for our honorable Supreme Court has so decided. When we started from home we concluded to live as much back in the days of '49 as possible, so I discarded all tents and everything else I thought I could stand in the line of civilized life, and as I had no ox yoke for a pillow I substituted a horse collar, which was about as hard, and after using it one night I told my wife it was no wonder Jacob saw a vision of a ladder when he lay with his head on a stone for a pillow, but the wonder was it did not lead down to the other place instead of up to heaven.
On crossing the hills after leaving Los Angeles we entered the beautiful valley of San Fernando. The roads were badly cut up by hauling heavy loads of hay and grain to market. They have fine land up here but we can discount them for water and climate. We found the weather and the water box.

The Senator is only about five feet high, but he is a journalist and has a great head. On Third street he encountered Monohan, a six-foot constituent, and it being necessary to say something after the respectful handshake, Murphy remarked.
Well, Monohan, how's things going? You've got your coat off pulling for the party, I suppose?
Monohan looked embarassed, but finally vettured:
"I dunno, Sinater, I dunno. I'm thinkin' now thim Republicans has the right side on the tariff kwistin."
What?" shirred the astonished Senator,
"Do you mean to say, Monohan, that you're going back on the old party?
"Wall, sor," answered the constituent,
"I has been goin' around to the clubs of both parties, hearin' the speakers, an' it do seem to me that thim Republicans has the bist av it on the tariff—it's bist for workin' men, anyhow."
Monohan," said the Senator sternly,
even menacingly," do you know what the tariff tax has been on the tin-plate that has entered this port during the year?
"No, sor; I don't," admitted Monohan,
troubled.
"Do you know how many tons of coal came in, every ton paying a duty of 75 cents?"
"No, Sinater, I don't know that ayther," confessed Monohan, distressed.
"Do you know what the tariff tax was in 1891 on the grain sacks used by the farmers of California?"
"Ab, sure," cried Monohan, surrendering,
and seeking refuge in a forced laugh, while he seized Mr. Murphy's arm in a jouular and admiring grasp. "Ab, sure, what the divi's use av thyrin' to argy wid you, Sinater? You do have thim figures all at yer finger's inde! Come on and have a drink!"
The Senator denies this story, but it's true.
