Already the fruit dealers there find themselves stocked up with fresh fruit for there is no sale, and the market is practically at an end for this year.
This is a hard blow to California growers, but we must expect to be share of the commercial losses in co-operation with the entire people of the United States. To so out of doors in rough weather is not strong, but we are many of us, competed to face rough weather frequently. Diseases which arise from a chill are peculiar to no season of the year. This is true, therefore there should be in the closet of every household—what? Not an unmedicated stimulant, absolutely devoid of anything but an excitative action, but a tale combining, in the effective form of an invigorant and an alternative, the quality of defense against changes of weather. Hostetter's Stomach Mittens has three or four properties that make article obtus class possesses. Not only does it relieve the compants which it eventually cures, it fortifies the system against the bad effects of changes of temperature; atally and too often shown in the deadly form of wil gripper; it produces a radical change in the weakened condition of a system peculiarly liable to be attacked by, and it leads to provide against the danger resulting from an impoverished condition of the blood and a disordered state of the liver or bowels.
A correspondent wants to know what has been the greatest event of the present century in the interest of society. Omitting all references to wars, the two greatest events wee the introduction of railroads and telegraph. Back of these great events was the application of steam to river and ocean navigation, the construction of steamships subsequently that cross the Atlantic in less than a week, and the entire revolution of the naval armaments of the world. These are the great events in the line of human progress during the century.

Horticultural Commissioners.
The following resolutions passed at the meeting of the Association of Horticultural Commissioners of Southern California, held in Los Angeles last Thursday, represent the fresh fruit inasmuch as the previous measures against cholera include an abstention from fresh fruit of every fruit available up with fresh fruit for there is no sale, and the market is priced at an end for this year.
This is a hard blow to California growers, but we must expect to be share of the commercial losses in commerce with the entire people of the United States. The approach of cholera and the restricting which are properly and necessarily place trade and commerce will cost millions on lars in the aggregate, and California can expect to go soot free.
There is, however, a compensation in case which many of the less favored S will not possess. We shall lose the saver our fresh fruit, but the market for our canned and preserved fruits will be increased. People will not buy foreign fruit in cholera times, as was shown years ago when cholera prevailed on theinent of Europe. There was a prairie boycott of Spanish raisins, French prince Tarazonal almonds and walnuts, etc., resulted in introducing California protensions into the Eastern States. This year he will doubtless be magnified, as the people United States will regard with suspicion all imported food products of every kind will rely upon the home product.
California can, by a little extra exertion supply the entire United States with calure and fresh fruits, and we know of no source of supply that will be acceptable to American people. As the old adage be if we do not get it in meal we get it in and the medical inhibition on the ure green fruit leaves us so much more to dry and preserve to supply the demand on the Eastern market where we may be European fruit will not be salable at price.

Horticultural Commissioners.
The following resolutions, passed at the
meeting of the Association of Horticultural
Commissioners of Southern California, held
in Los Angeles last Thursday, represent the
unanimous opinion of the association touching
the action of the State Board in cancelling
Mr. Collins' appointment as quarantine
guardian of San Bernardino county:
WHEREAS, W.E. Collins, a member of
this association, and one of the quarantine
guardians and horticultural commissioners
of San Bernardino county, has had his
appointment as quarantine guardian revoked
by the State Board of Horticulture, without
good and sufficient cause; and
WHEREAS, This action on the part of the
State Board appears to be but personal
spite on the part of its secretary, B. M.
Lelong, whose statements in criticising
others engaged in the good work of economic
entomology and the suppression of injurious
insect pests and disease, both by word of
mouth and in his public reports, have been
at variance with the facts and injurious to
horticulture in this section; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this association regards
the action of the State Board as a grattitous insult, not only to Mr. Collins, but to
this association as a whole, and through it to
the fruit growers generally; and that the
State Board be asked to make simple reparation for this injury done, and that he be
reinstated. Be it
RESOLVED, That the secretary submit
copies of these resolutions to the Governor
of the State, to the Boards of Supervisors of
the six southern counties, to the president
of the State Fruit Growers' Society, and to
the Board of Directors of the State Board of
Horticulture, and the county horticultural
commissioners throughout the State.
The association begs to submit the following, touching the recent importations from
Australia of parasitical insects:
WHEREAS, The colonies of predaceous
insects—principally ladybirds—that have
been imported through the efforts of our
State government and the National Deptment of Agriculture are not multiplying as
rapidly as is desired, and as yet show no
evidence of feeding on the scale in great
numbers; and
WHEREAS, It is still largely problematical whether they will prove effectual parasites of the red scale (aspidiotus aurantii)
Pronounced Hopeless, Yet Saved.
From a letter written by Mrs. Ada Hord, of Gritton, S.D., we quote: "Wurd taken with a bad cold, which settled on my lungs, cough set in and finally terminated in Consumption. Four doctors gave me no saying I could live but a short time. I got myself up to my Saviour, determined if could not stay with my friends on earth would meet my absent ones above."
His husband was advised to get Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption. Coughes as Colda. I gave it a trial, took in all eight bottles; it has cured me, and thank God I now a well and hearty woman." Trial bites free at W. M. Higgins' drug store, reglar size, 50 cents and $1.

To Pay a Friendly Visit to Chile.
The chief significance of Admiral Gherardi's voyage with his fleet around theHorn is to be an imposing display of Americanmen-of-war in the harbor of Valparaíso. Theintention is to have the Admiral transfer hisflag from the San Francisco to the Baltimoreupon the completion of his friendly mission toChile and return to the Atlantic coast withthe latter vessel in time to assume commandofthe naval review. All the other vesselswill remain on the Pacific coast. It is believed that Admiral Gherardi's visit to Chile willbe productive of good results. It will be madein a spirit of extreme friendliness. The overshadowing purpose will be to satisfyChile that we have forgotten the late frictionbetween the two countries and that weare both willing and desirous of resumingour former pleasant relations with that country.Incidentally it is expected that ourfine fleet of modern cruisers will openthe eyes of some of the Chileans to the fact thatthe American navy is progressing and willincrease their respect for America andAmericans. October lt was the day set forthe departure of Admiral Gherardi onthis southern voyage, but it is understood that ordershave been sent to iron ore in the minenow—no tin ore at all. The company isnot smelting any tin ore and they are not takingany tin ore out, for there is none to take out.The company has control of a large tractthere twenty miles or more by ten or twelvemiles wide, and during the last two yearsthey have prospected pretty thoroughly overthe hills and every acre of ground includedin their tract. It is little they have found, but much noiss they have made. They gotmost of the tin ore that was mined at the50and 100 foot levels, and have not gottenmuch since, although they are down now350feet. During March and April they stoppedwork on the shafts and drifts and shut downthe machine drills.

Admiral Gherardia visit to Chile will be productive of good results. It will be made in a spirit of extreme friendliness. The overshadowing purpose will be to satisfy Chile that we have forgotten the late friction between the two countries and that we are both willing and desirous of resuming our former pleasant relations with that country. Incidentally it is expected that our fine fleet of modern cruisers will open the eyes of some of the Chileans to the fact that the American navy is progressing and will increase their respect for America and Americans. October lst was the day set for the departure of Admiral Gherardia on this southern voyage, but it is understood that orders have been sent to Maré Island Navy Yard to have all vessels ready to sail by the 25th institut. His fleet will comprise the San Francisco, Charleston, Boston, Baltimore and possibly the Yorktown, if she returns to San Francisco from Behring sea in season. These vessels will touch at many of the South Pacific ports, but will tarry the longest in the harbor of Valparaiso, where there will be a general round of entertainments and an interchange of social courtesies. Rear Admiral Gherardi will tender a special invitation to the new government of Chile to send a fleet of vessels to take part in the naval review and in many other ways show a desire to court friendly relations with that republic. The selection of Admiral Gherardi for this mission is regarded in naval circles as an excellent one. No one in the service has had more experience in matters requiring a nice disminuating touch than he, nor is any officer of the navy more popular with the Chileans. The authorities have no desire to reflect on Acting Rear Admiral Brown, and unless he should sak to be relieved he will be continued in his present command until he completes his three years' term in January next, though there will be no modern vessels left for him pending the absence of the new ships in the south. That Admiral Brown was not selected for the visit to Chile was solely because the department feared that his presence in Valparaiso might be displeasing to some of the officials now in power, who accused him of being a partisan of Balmaceda.
A Great Liver Medicine.
Dr. Guenn's Improved Liver Pills are a cure for sick headache, bilious complaints, dyspepsia, indigestion, costiveness, torpid liver, etc. These pills insure perfect digestion, correct the liver and the stomach, regulate the bowels, purify and enrich the blood and make the skin clear. They also produce a good appetite and invigorate and strengthen the entire system by their tonic action. They only require one pill for a dose and never gripe or sicken. Sold at 25 cents a box at Reid's drug store.
During the street parade of Sella's circus in Kentucky one day last week a man known as "Animal George," was attacked by a huge tiger in whose cage he was riding. The beat seemed possessed of the devil and screamed in fury as he bit and torc his shrieking victim. The spectators, panic-striken, fled as if pursued by death, while the show hands rushed to the cage and did everything in their power to rescue the man who was being rent to pieces alive. They could accomplish nothing until the trainer was dead, when the infuriated beast retired to a corner. Not a shred of clothing remained on the unfortunate man. His head was torn open, the face gone and nearly every bone in his body broken.

The authorities have no desire to reflect on Acting Rear Admiral Brown, and unless he should sak to be relieved he will be continued in his present command until he completes his three years' term in January next, though there will be no modern vessels left for him pending the absence of new ships in the south. That Admiral Brown was not selected for the visit to Chile was solely because the department feared that his presence in Valparaiso might be displeasing to some of the officials now in power, who accused him of being a partisan of Balmaceda.

Saved from Death by Onions.
There has no doubt been more lives of children saved from death in croup or whooping cough by the use of onions than any other known remedy; our mothers used to make poultices of them, or a syrup, which was always effectual in breaking up a cough or cold. Dr. Guinn's Onion Syrup is made by combining a few simple remedies with it which make it more effective as a medicine and destroys the taste and odor of the onion. Fifty cents. Sold at Reid's drug store.
Experience with school children in the handling of fruit in many places has been so satisfactory that the question of a later fall opening of the schools is agitated. There is much in the question to command it to school trustees in the fruit districts. By arranging the school vacation to correspond neatly with the season of the fruit harvest, would give all the children who desire work in the orchards and preserving establishments an opportunity to earn a neat little amount of pocket money. It is found that the children of all ages readily embrace such opportunities when offered, and by arranging the school terms to suit, a great deal of money now paid Chinese for such work could be kept in the locality and among the school children. It would at once afford a valuable lesson in industrial economy to the child, and benefit the locality by keeping the money at home.—Ex.

For this purpose, there is nothing better than an occasional dose of Ayer's Pills taken at bed time.
