The Weekly Gazette. ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY. Henry Kuchel, Charles Kuchel, Editors and Proprietors. THURSDAY... AUGUST 18, 1892. The call for Republican primaries to elect delegates to the Republican County Convention will be found in another column this morning. The primaries will be held on Tuesday, August 23rd, and the county convention on Saturday, September 3rd. The convention will be composed of 97 delegates, of which this township will have 18, as follows: Anaheim, 5; West Anaheim, 3; Fullerton, 4; Buena Park, 3; and Yorba Lake. The officers to be nominated are: One Assemblyman for the Seventy-Sixth Assembly District, Sheriff, County Clerk, Auditor, Recorder, Tax Collector, District Attorney, Treasurer, Coroner and Public Administrator, Surveyor and Supervisor from this district. Besides this list there are the usual township officers to nominate, two Justices of the Peace and two Constables for each township. There will be no Roadmasters to elect, the new law, passed by the last Legislature, having done away with the old road system. The law, which goes into effect on the first Monday of next January, provides that each Supervisor district shall constitute a road district, the Supervisor to be ex-officio Road Commissioner, and all work to be under his supervision. In addition to the officers named above a State Senator must be nominated from the Thirty-Ninth Senatorial District, composed of this county and San Bernardino. Orange county has seven delegates, and San Bernardino fourteen. The time and place for holding the Senatorial convention has not yet been determined upon. Whether we have really to elect a Supervisor in this district this Fall is yet a question that is not very clear. Mr. Schorn holds that he was elected to serve four years, and consequently that he holds over with the rest of the board. The Republican County Central Committee think differently, and will cause a nomination to be made. Whether the Democrats will take this view of the case and nominate a candidate for the county carving started again have enough of it. Our auggbe that Los Angeles lead off in enterprise of this kind, selecting that is proper for a consolite county government and let them where it chooses or set up for fit. The idea of allowing other the carving and then coming in what they choose to leave is plain. ANAHEIM has not thus far developed very many candidates. We have Coroner Kyup for re-election, and they say he has a cast iron cinch on the nomination. The friends of Colonel Tuffree are speaking of his chances for Supervisor, and Mr. Sohorn will doubtless be in it also, just to make it interesting. Ed Amerige is mentioned for Supervisor on the Republican side, but he is at present giving his undivided attention to camp life down at the Landing. Max. Nebelung's name had been mentioned in connection with the Tax Collectorship, but he informs us that he has too much to attend to at home to permit of his going into politics This Fall. Thus far, then, the only county candidate developed is our good-looking friend, Coroner Ey, who if the ladies could vote, his opponent would not be in it! For Justice of the Peace we hear of several gentlemen who will be in the race, as also the case with the office of Constable. As yet no announcements have been made, but we may expect them to appear shortly. A WILDLY improbable yarn is out on Uncle Hiram Hamilton, Populist candidate for Congress, which, if not promptly denied and nailed, will undoubtedly work him gobs of evil with the farmer vote, especially with that part of it which interests itself in raising poultry, like Patterson of the Roosterie. We put ourselves on record as being very COMPLAINS have been filed Diego Superior Court against of the Perris Irrigation District have been issued for the Director and show cause why they should marily removed from office 772 of the code for failure to duties of their office. The co-authors something over thirty chats the following accusation Directors paid $240,000 for the chase water and not for was created the office of general paid J. W. Nance $2,500 for they had employed Chinese on contrary to law; that they hadply the whole district with w fused to do so; that they had in the letting of contracts, got to the highest bidder instead and they had, after the resignation Nance as Director and before ment of his successor, leased nominal sum the entire right of the district while Director. Children's Park Leigh Hunt invited a number Tuesday afternoon to help him eleventh birthday. The after in playing games. Refreshment and everybody had a very nice present were Lois Hunt, Mabe Bailey, Melanie Cahen, Ede Nona McWilliams, Edith Bat wood, Inez James, Lillie J Bailey, Lana Cook, Willie Bates, James Williams, Allan Bates, James Williams, Allan Bates, Merton Skinner, Horace Charlie Gosch. Mr. Schorn holds that he was elected to serve four years, and consequently that he holds over with the rest of the board. The Republican County Central Committee think differently, and will cause a nomination to be made. Whether the Democrats will take this view of the case and nominate a candidate for the office remains to be seen, but as showing the drift of sentiment, we might say that during the week the claims of one or two gentlemen for the office have been quite freely discussed by their friends. Who the Republican candidate will have the honor to be is as yet a sealed question, but we hear that, if the Democrats should decide to make a nomination, the contest will narrow itself down to a fight between Mr. Schorn and Col. J. K. Taufree of the Rancho Buena Vista at Placentia. The Democratic primaries have not been called, but will probably be in the near future. The Democratic Congressional Convention will be held at Santa Ana on Tuesday, August 30th. Col. Olin Welborn of San Diego and Capt. Harry Patton of the Salton Sea are prominently mentioned for the office. PROF. NEWTON B. PIERCE, the well-known Government expert on the mysterious vine disease, was in town on Monday for the first time in several months and made a pleasant call at this office. The Professor came in search of fig trees growing in damp ground, the fruit of which is liable to sour, and during the afternoon went on a tour of inspection of the fig trees in this section. Prof. Pierce has recently achieved a most astonishing success in the treatment of some almond trees at Orange infested with fungus. He treated the trees in alternate rows, and the benefits of his treatment are so striking that he has had several photographs made to show the beneficial effect of the treatment. The trees treated show an average of 93 per cent of foliage and are clean and vigorous in appearance, while those not treated are absolutely destitute of foliage and are rapidly approaching dissolution—we believe some of the trees show about 5 per cent of their natural foliage. The effect of the treatment is certainly wonderful, and the Professor is ready to impart the knowledge to any of our horticulturists having treasured similarly affected. Regarding the vine disease, the Professor brings the reassuring information that the disease has practically run its course, and while he has discerned traces of it at one or two points across the river, he is satisfied that it is rapidly disappearing. He is in receipt of a letter from Prof. Viola, the French expert on the vine disease, who visited this country in 1887 to look into the nature of the disease. Prof. Viola attributes the disdino fourteen. The time and place for holding the Senatorial convention has not as yet been determined upon. For Justice of the Peace we hear of several gentlemen who will be in the race, as is also the case with the office of Constable. We put ourselves on record as being very much opposed to aiding in the dissemination of this class of wicked reports. Neither do we vouch for the truth of this one on Uncle Hiram, but simply tell it as 'twas told to us. It seems that Uncle Hiram while a resident of one of the northern counties took a hand at raising poultry, so the story goes, and to his credit it said, made quite a uniform success at the business. Pullets were quoted in the market at $9 per dozen at the time, and youthful roosters at $6. Uncle Hiram got $9 for his poultry right along. True, he had a considerable percentage of the cheaper class of birds in his collection, but he got $9 per dozen for them all the same. The old gentleman's success set all the neighbors expiring with envy. They marveled at his wonderful luck, and wondered by what system of setting 'eggs' he reaped the benefits of the higher price for his poultry. But this thing could not last. Finally one of the roosters gave the snap away. The bird made itself ridiculous by crowing out lastly just as Uncle Hiram was about to perpetrate a sale—at $9 per dozen. The snap was given away completely, and they say Uncle Hiram left the country never to return. He had been pulling the tails out of the roosters and selling them for pullets right along. But the newspaper that fails to stamp the yarn with its seal of disapproval shouldn't get any public documents from Uncle Hiram when he gets to Washington. The total assessed valuation of property within the corporate limits of the city amounts to $500,596. The railroad assessment has not as yet been received from the State Board of Equalization. Last year the total assessed valuation, including the railroads, amounted to $494,857. This shows a very healthy increase. Water Company's Finances. Cash in hands of Secretary April 1... $117 97 Regarding the vine disease, the Professor brings the reassuring information that the disease has practically run its course, and while he has discerned traces of it at one or two points across the river, he is satisfied that it is rapidly disappearing. He is in receipt of a letter from Prof. Viola, the French expert on the vine disease, who visited this country in 1887 to look into the nature of the disease. Prof. Viola attributes the disease to slime mould, but Prof. Pierce is disinclined to agree with him. In fact the Department of Agriculture at Washington clearly disagrees with the French export. Prof. Pierce is carrying on his important work in a conscientious, painstaking and observant manner, and great good is resulting from his stay amongst us. The climate seems to agree with him, also, for when he came to Orange county he was slight of build, whereas now he verges upon the embonpoint. Of necessity he must believe in the beneficial effects of the glorious climate of California. Mr. C. H. Gosch of this city has prepared an article for the Engineering and Mining Journal of New York on the reason for the decline of the exports of Great Britain. This decline, by the way, is causing great disquietude among the manufacturers of that country. According to the Board of Trade returns, just published, it appears that the exports of iron and steel for the first six months of the year were 1,277,802 tons, valued at £10,743,329, as compared with 1,662,208 tons, valued at £14,954,277, during the first half of 1891. The decrease was therefore no less than 384,406 tons, or 23 per cent in quantity, and £4,210,948, or 29 per cent in value. Seeing that the exports of 1891 were much lower than those of the previous year, the English manufacturers may well ask, Where is this going to end? Mr. Gosch attributes this decline to the attitude of Great Britain on the silver question, and he makes a very forcible presentation of the case. He was for years a large importer of foreign goods into Mexico, and had the opportunity of coming to a full realization of the disastrous effects on commerce... NEW ADVERTISEMENTS.
