The call is issued by the Congressional Committee for a Republican Congressional Convention to be held at Merced, in this district, on next Monday, the day before the State Convention at Sacramento. The call issued by the State Republican Executive Committee directs peremptorily that the Congressional conventions to be held at the same time and place with the State Convention, and that the delegates to the latter be the delegates to the former. This is clearly a usurpation of power which should not be allowed to ripen into a precedent. If so allowed, the next step might be to require us to nominate our county officers at the State Convention. The State Committee exceeds its jurisdiction when it undertakes to dictate the holding and the makeup of Congressional conventions. We understand that the vote of the State Executive Committee was to recommend that the district conventions be held at the same time and place with the State Convention, and that the delegates be the same to both. But, when the call came to be issued, it was a peremptory command instead of a recommendation. Our Congressional District Committee has done well to disregard it. It would be interesting to learn just what unholy influences were brought to bear to bring about the present preposterous lines of our Congressional district. The district runs from San Diego county on the south to Stanialaus on the north, and embraces the counties of Orange, San Bernardino, San Diego, Fresno, Tulare, Kern, San Benito, Merced and Stanialaus. The northern line reaches to within a few miles of Stockton, and the district stretches over about a quarter of the area of the State, being formed on absolutely the most preposterous lines imaginable. The Congressional convention, which has been called to meet on Monday next, assembles at Merced, and will be composed of seventy-seven delegates, only thirty-seven of whom will be from the counties of Orange, Streeter of Riverside to the office. Senator Streeter holds that his term of office does not expire until 1895, and consequently insists that no vacancy exists to be filled at the election this year. We do not think the Senator's point is well taken. Since this election the State has been redistricted, and entirely different lines prevail. He does not live in the San Diego district, and was not elected from our district, which will in all probability be represented by an Orange county man. Senator Streeter is not in it. GEN. PIERCE, who is a candidate for State Senator, has written a letter to Chairman Ballard of the Republican County Central Committee, protesting against the snap convention and demanding that primaries be called for the election of delegates to a county convention to choose delegates to the Senatorial Convention. The General is perfectly right, and there are hundreds of Republicans in the county who are with him. The snap convention is not current in this year of grace. The Snap Convention. EDITOR GAZETTE.—As one of the many Republicans who feel aggrieved and indignant at the action of the Republican County Committee in arrogating to themselves the right to elect delegates to the Congressional and Senatorial conventions, I heartily thank you for your spirited protest in last week's paper. In stating that the committee elected delegates to the conventions named, I am not misrepresenting the facts of the case. I am willing to admit that the leading spirits of the committee are political tricksters, and I am not going to do them the injustice of asserting they are political idiots. That they would deserve the latter appellation if they appointed delegates to the county convention whose sentiments they did not know, or whose actions they could not control, is a proposition too plain to admit of dispute. The end they sought to attain just as well have been brought about by naming the delegates to the Congressional and Senatorial conventions themselves, instead of appointing as delegates to the county convention men who through indifference or other reasons, registered the bidding of the committee. I have heard many intelligent and self-respecting Republicans speak of this matter, and they are one and all of the opinion that the result will be disastrous to the nominees of the party for Congressman and Senator. As one of them said: "The committees did not want my vote at the primaries, and the committees' nominees will not but the transportation is in California Frut Transport which runs runners cost will be $5 75 per 100 pts where it is expected enormously received for the fruit. Rep The apportionment of delegates is as follows: Orange 7, San Bernardino 13, San Diego 17, Freno 12, Tulare 10, Kern 5, Stanislaus 5, Merced 4, and San Benito 4. Thus the northern counties have forty votes, and may nominate. Their interests are entirely dissimilar from ours, with a Merced or Stanislaus man in Congress representing us, our people will be in fine position to realize what sort of a district the politicians have given us. The district is too large and cumbersome, and it strings along too many counties with interests entirely dissimilar, to be satisfactory to the people. Instead of combining contiguous counties with a contiguity of interests, wherein a representative in Congress might represent the people with some degree of comprehension, the district stretches over a section of such wide and diverse interests as to absolutely laughable were it not such a serious matter to ourselves. That Orange, and Ikowise San Bernardino and San Diego counties, should be in a district running north to the Mount Diablo base line and beyond, savors of peridious political treachery on the part of our legislators that comes with little grace to the people. We have seven Congress districts in the State, and we certainly should fare better at the hands of our legislators. Meanwhile we expect there is nothing to do but to grin and bear it, and await an early opportunity to change it for the better. The unprecedented action of the Republican County Central Committee in calling their snap convention to elect delegates to the Congressional and Senatorial conventions, as denounced in those columns last week, is meeting with severest censure from Republicans in various parts of the county. The action of the committee is denounced as a gross usurpation of power, and stamps them, we should say, as putty men in the hands of the more adroit Bowers managers. That their action will be harmful to the nominees of both conventions, admits of but very little doubt. Republicans of reason dislike these cut and dried and snap-shot affairs, and invariably resent them at the polls. Our Congressional district is close—closer than the next one. Voting whose constituents they did not know, or whose actions they could not control, is a preposition too plain to admit of dispute. The end they sought to attain just as well have been brought about by naming the delegates to the Congressional and Senatorial convictions themselves, instead of appointing as delegates to the county convention men who, through indifference or other reasons, registered the bidding of the committee. I have heard many intelligent and self-respecting Republicans speak of this matter, and they are one and all of the opinion that the result will be disastrous to the nominees of the party for Congressman and Senator. As one of them said: "The committee did not want my vote at the primaries, and the committee's nominees will not get it at the polls. The time has long since passed when the party's managers can crack their whip and compel the party's voters to rally to the support of anybody they choose to name; and as those managers seem to have forgotten that fact, 'the best and most lasting reminder that' can be given them is to snow their candidates under at the polls." Party fealty is not strong now political opinions are in a wobbly condition, and it is just such actions as here complained of that give to Republicans an excuse (and a just one) to jump the traces. The question has been asked: "Why did the committee, ignoring all precedent, fail to call a primary election and give the voters an opportunity to express themselves thereat?" I, for one, do not know. In their insolence, or arrogance, the committee have made no explanation. Perhaps it is because they have none to offer. I am inclined to think so, and am further inclined to believe that the committee itself have in this matter been merely the puppets of the brainier managers of Congressman Bowers, and did what they were ordered to do. Just why the Bowers managers adopted this plan of campaign I do not know, because as far as I can learn there is little or no opposition to his renunciation and he would have been safe in letting matters take their usual course. I suppose he wanted to make assurance doubly sure by taking this snap course; he has done the same thing in his own county, San Diego, and there is an ominous bowl down there which argues ill for him on election day. If there is not a great change in Republican sentiment between now and election day, I think the result will justify my prediction, that he has committed political hari-kari. Huena Park. The Y. P. S. C. E. had one of the very best socials they have ever had at the hotel last Friday evening. Westminster was well represented; twenty young came from there on a hay ride and others in carriages. The programme was excellent, composed of original papers, fine music and recitations. Mr. Loughborough, the choreist of the choir, rendered a violin solo, accompanied on the piano by Miss Anna Potter. It was very fine and heartily enclosed. Miss May-belle Young sang "Love's Old Sweet Song" with effect. Miss Hattie McCoy sang a Legend. Miss Bollberry recited a medley, and Mr. Shay a piece entitled, "I Am Guilty." It was full of pathos and well rendered. Mrs. Stephenson read a paper, "How Continents Are Built." The programme ended, ice cream and cake were served, and then appeared in the dining room a tailless donkey, but it was not very long before Mr. T. J. House placed the missing appendage where it ought to be, and received as a prize a lovely pair of slippers donated by Mrs. Baron. Friday evening there will be a debate in the Endeavor rooms, to which all are invited. The Fruit Man. That their action will be harmful to the nominees of both conventions, admits of but very little doubt. Republicans of reason dislike these cut and dried and snap-shot affairs, and invariably resent them at the polls. Our Congressional district is close—much closer than the party managers imagined when they perpetrated the disgraceful gerrymander of the district—and just such actions on the part of the putty men in the County Central Committee will serve to alienate enough votes to turn the contest over to the Democrats. Their action was unwise, ill-timed, indefensible and prejudicial to the best interests of the party. There is considerable talk in various sections of Los Angeles county about the formation of the new county of Pomona, and there appears to be very little opposition to the scheme. Should the new county be created, there will be quite a populous strip to tack on to Orange county. Los Angeles county's southern boundary would probably come down to New river, and we should have the rich Norwalk and Artesia and New river country in this county. This would give us a largely increased assessed valuation, and we should have several thousand more inhabitants in the county. This would redound to our benefit very much, and would likewise be of benefit to the people of that section, all of whom are anxious to cast their lot with this county. Some of the analyses of Chino beats this season show a wonderful percentage of sugar. Taken at random they average above 15 per cent, some going as high as 19 and over, with the standard of purity correspondingly high. The Chino best raisers will make a mint of money this year, while cereal crops throughout Southern California are well-nigh a failure. Many were grieved to learn of the sad death of the lad who was stopping with the family of Mr. Hart. The remains were sent to the father in Oakland Friday morning. Massara, J.
