The Weekly Gazette. ISSUE B EVERY THURSDAY. Henry Kuchel, Charles Kuchel, EDITORS AND PROPRIETORS. THURSDAY... JUNE 2, 1892. The annual statement of City Clerk Nobelung of the finances of the city of Anaheim during the year ending with April 30th, is published this morning. The statement makes a very flattering exhibit of our finances. The total revenues of the city for the year amount to $9,608 88, and the expenditures to $17,355 99. Much of the latter was expended in the repair and grading of streets, erection of the New City Hall, and other improvements, for which bonds in the sum of $15,000 were issued some months ago. The recapitulation of the report shows that there was received by the city from all sources during the year the sum of $23,-397 41. The total expenses being, as above, $17,355 99, there remains a balance on hand in favor of the city amounting to $6,041 42. We are working up a great surplus. The total revenues derived from the sale of water during the year amounted to $1,964, of which 5 per cent, or $98 20, was paid for collecting it, leaving a balance of $1,865 80. The approximate running expenses of the water works during the year amounted to $1,668 19, leaving the comfortable balance of $197 61. After the water works shall have been put in thorough repair and the new well constructed, we may reasonably look for quite a comfortable revenue from this arm of the city government. The total received from license and water amounted to $4,156 49. The cost of lighting the city during the year amounted to $390 85. There being thirty-five street lamps, the average cost of each light per year is $116. We started in May of last year with $1,221 02 in the hands of the Treasurer, and we have at present $6,041 42. We paid $1,366 94 for salaries, and $362 75 for legal services, and sprinkling the streets cost us $499 20. On the whole the report is a comprehensive and instructive one, and should be read with interest by the taxpayers of the city. discharge of all such assistants as were employed in accordance with the provisions of the amendment to the County Government Act, as their appointments have been declared void by the Supreme Court. About Modjeska. Holena Benda Modjeska is now at her ranch in the Santiago canyon for the summer with her husband, Count Bozenta, says the New York Sun. Her wealth is considerable, and most of it is shrewdly invested. She does not leak her age, which is dangerously near to 50, and the marvel of her youthful demeanor and ripe beauty is that she has been a hard-working actress for more than thirty years. No woman on our stage—which she has graced and elevated during a period of fifteen years—has passed through anything like her experiences. At 18 she was the bride of G. S. Modezejewski, a contraction of which name is her present stage name; at 22 a widow, and at 26 again a wife, with the Count Charles Bozonta Chlapovsky as her husband; to-day a rich woman, though once an impoverished Polish exile. Few who see her would expect her of being a grandmother, yet she is proud of it. In Modjeska's company the best actors of the day have played, and most of them have confessed that to work under her was in itself an education. Fully fourteen years ago, long before he had acquired note in this country, Robert Bruce Mantell was in her support. As her leading man Maurice Blythe Barrym罗 has won successes not often since duplicated; and in Edward H. Vanderbilt, in the erratic Frank Clement, in raising William Morris, and a dozen others, she has acted actors who owe much to her inspiration and example. The State Horticultural Society holds its monthly meeting on Saturday at the rooms of the State Board in San Francisco. Reports from members concerning the fruit crop showed a generally fair crop of peaches in the interior and light along the coast. The pear crop in parts of the northern belt and in the San Joaquin valley was reported heavy, but light in other sections. Apricots are reported as being plantiful, but the crop of cherries, plums and prunes is light. The grain crop was reported to be very heavy in many counties. High prices for fruit for the coming season were predicted, as crops in many parts of the country were injured by the recent storms. Considerable interest has manifested itself in this enterprise during the week. Saturday evening an enthusiastic meeting was held at Garden Grove, at which a number of shares were added to the roll, with prospects good for many more. In this connection it might be mentioned that a letter has been received from A. N. Towne, of the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, to the effect that as soon as the refinery shall be assured and work upon the buildings begun, the railroad will construct a branch line to Garden Grove and Westminster, and probably continue on to Long Beach, where it will make connection with the main line. This would give the Southern Pacific a "kite-shaped track," which apart from the prodigious business of the refinery and the beet fields, would prove a very profitable investment to them. The route would be one of great scenic beauty, many miles of it bordering as it would upon the shore, in plain view of the sea. This road will be running inside of ninety days after the beginning of work upon the refinery buildings and the inauguration of the enterprise, and would be the absolute making of Westminster and Garden Grove. There was never an undertaking that held out such great promise to a section as our contemplated sugar refinery and the attendant enterprises that follow in its wake. Last year $3,673,899 worth of sugar was imported into this country from the co-operative jurisdiction of Berlin, including the two great sugar centers of Hamburg and Magdeburg, during the quarter ending March 31. During the corresponding quarter this year not one pound of sugar was imported, although hundreds of thousands of tons of raw sugar are stored, but no buyer appears. From statements of many leading sugar dealers it is learned that the American Sugar Trust is purposely keeping away from German markets in order to "bear" raw products so as to buy German stock cheaply in the end. German merchants believe that the Americans will eventually be forced to enter the German market, and in such event prices will rise rapidly. Should this prove to be the case, then the prices of refined sugar would naturally go up in the United States. The largest quantity of honey any one in this famous honey-making region remembers to have taken from one spot and at one time is reported by a Spanish ranchman who lives several miles southwest of Spadra. For several years he has seen bees at work in the top of an old oak tree on his ranch, but not wishing to injure the tree, he delayed getting the honey until a few days ago. A party of four men then went at it, and were busy all day in taking away the honey. They got the immense quantity of 743 pounds of comb honey. The stock of sweetness had evidently been stored in the tree little by little for over fifteen years. The House Committee on Agriculture has agreed to report a bill appropriating $20,000 for experiments in sugar culture; provided that so much thereof as may be necessary shall be expended in investigations and preparations to carry on experimentous next year in sugar cane or reclaimed swamp lands in some suitable place in the San Joaquin or Sacramento valleys of California. The Agricultural Department has agreed to ship to California the plant now being used in Louisiana, as the season in Louisiana will soon be over. The opinion prevails that sugar culture in the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys can be carried on and will succeed as in the most favored sugar section of Florida. Recent experiments in the last named State have been highly satisfactory. German merchants believe that the Americans will eventually be forced to enter the German market, and in such event prices will rise rapidly. There is some little talk of German capital starting refineries in San Francisco and handling Sandwich Island sugar in opposition to the trust. The National Republican Convention moots at Minneapolis next Tuesday. The Convention will be composed of 898 delegates, and 450 will be necessary to a choice. At this writing it is impossible to say which of the candidates will be nominated, but it looks like it would be either Blaine or Harrison. The Supreme Court has rendered a decision which is calculated to disturb the even tone of proceedings in the offices of public officials throughout the State. The judgment in question deals solely with the hitherto freely exercised right of Boards of Supervisors to appoint extra deputies for the performance of work in the various departments with salaries provided by the Supervisors and not by the officials in whose quarters the deputies are engaged. The decision will deprive Supervisors of any such right, and will thus render officials responsible for the payment of such assistants as they may determine to employ. The County Government Act enacted in 1883 provided that county officials might employ deputies with the condition that they should be paid out of the sum allowed the official for his own salary and the expenses of his office. In 1887, however, the Legislature amended this law and authorized the Supervisors in certain counties to grant officials such assistance as they required. The Supreme Court holds that this amendment is unconstitutional, and that the Legislature is not empowered to bestow legislative functions upon Boards of Supervisors. The matter will thus result in the A full line of camping outfits, tents, hammocks, etc., just received from the East at Lyons' store. Two cattlemens returned to that place on Friday from a trip through the Indian Wells country. They found grass and water in abundance, and said that the great desert was transformed by its covering of flowers, caot, grass and undrubish and presented the appearance of a rich, productive valley, showing what water... will do for that arid region. The present high water is filling the New River canal system full, the Carter river is running a large flow stream towards Salton, and the South branch is doing the same towards Indian Wells. The old lakes are all filling up again with the water that passes to the westward from the Colorado through the crevasse of last year. The old Padrones river is also running full of water and is out of its banks in many places, as it was in 1855, 1862 and last year. Richard Gird has shipped eight thousand pounds of beet seed to the Oxnard Beet Sugar Company at Grand Island, Nebraska.
