The Weekly Gazette. ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY. Henry Kuchel. Charles Kuchel. EDITORS AND PROPRIETORS. THURSDAY... MAY 19, 1822. The agitation for the sugar factory goes actively on in a quiet but not uncertain way. During the week many new shares have been added to the list, and the excellent showing made by the beets already in the ground in experimental crops warrants the assumption that are long the entire complement of shares will be secured. A splendid site for the refinery buildings has been selected below town, and the tract, containing forty acres, has been presented to the corporation free of charge. Besides, sufficient water will be developed by artesian wells to meet all the requirements. The tract is in the very center of the artesian belt, and investigations carried on by Prof. Tucker of Los Angeles on Monday demonstrate the fact that two giant streams intersect one another on the tract less than 300 feet below the surface. This is indeed a very flattering prospect, and will prove nothing short of a bonanza to the refinery corporation. It will result in giving the corporation forty acres of land for the refinery buildings free of charge, with not less than two million gallons of water thrown into the bargain. This should stimulate subscriptions, and not many days should elapse before we may be able to say that half the stock has been subscribed. The young beets now growing give every indication of thrift and sugar-producing qualities. Experts pronounce them as fine as any they ever saw, the roots going straight down from twelve to fifteen inches into the soil. This is the nature of the sugar beet. With solid bodies of the required size, not too large, and long straight roots going deep into the soil, and with luxurious tops to extract their measure of vitality from the sunlight, there is every indication that we have here the best best growing country in the world. Next October these beets will be put to their test, and it is not too much to say they will go to fully fifteen per cent of sugar. When it is known that beets can become generally known for what she is and what she is certain to be in the future, we shall be amply satisfied. In the Nick of Time. The nick of time to stop the course of bladder and kidney complaints is when the organs concerned exhibit a tendency to grow masticate. The healthful impulse toward activity that they receive from Hostetter's stomach litters rescues them from impedging danger, and averts such dangerous maladies as brights disease and diabetes. Sluggishness of the kidneys increases a liability to chronic rheumatism, gout and droopy, and since the blood is filtered by these organs in its passage through them, the operation of the litter gives a constantly happy purpose. The machine acts without exciting, like the fiery stimuli of commerce. Malarial, dyspeptic, constipated and nervous invasions are thoroughly relieved by it. Since the advent of that shocking malady, la gripe, it has been widely demonstrating its usefulness as a curative and preventative of it. Section 8-all ordinations and parts orders and resolutions upon the suburban poles, wires, etc., of previous date, in Expertis pronounce them as fine as any they ever saw, the roots inching straight down from twelve to fifteen inches into the soil. This is the nature of the sugar beet. With solid bodies of the required size, not too large, and long straight roots going deep into the soil, and with luxuriant tops to extract their measure of vitality from the sunlight, there is every indication that we have here the best beet growing country in the world. Next October these beets will be put to their test, and it is not too much to say they will go to fully fifteen per cent of sugar. When it is known that beets in this valley have gone to eighteen and even as high as twenty-one per cent of sugar, this is certainly a very moderate estimate. It will be enough, however, to snap up all the necessary shares at that time outstanding, if at that time there be any such. These tests will embrace beets from Garden Grove, Westminster, Buena Park, Norwalk, Artusia, Fullerton and Anaheim—in fact from almost every section in the valley. While there is not the remotest doubt as to the outcome of the tests, they will be watched with peculiar interest nevertheless. Even if every share be not taken before these tests begin to show what we can do in sugar production, we shall have a plenty of time to get the rehnery up and in running order in time to handle next season's crop. The acreage set to beests in the valley ought to be sufficient, if the tests prove satisfactory, to equip not one, but half a dozen refineries. In the mean time, however, the subscriptions to stock are coming in at a satisfactory rate, and we expect soon to be able to say that half the number of shares have been secured. Mr. Littlefield has we believe given up the idea of carrying the Supervisor contest to the Supreme Court. This leaves Supervisor Schorn in absolute possession of the office to which he was elected at the last election. What we desire to say in this matter is this: The Supervisors have not designed to draw lots for the long and short term as is required by law. Taking advantage of the fact that the Orange county bill contains nothing about drawing lots, they have ignored this important part of their duties and are now all long-term men! The claim is set up that the board is working under the Orange county bill, and have nothing to do with the law providing for long and short term officers. This is certainly an extreme view of the case, and we epine that before election day rolls round, there will be a plenty of talk about mandamus proceedings to compel the Supervisors to follow out the spirit if not the letter of the law. Again, the question is raised, if the Supervisors refuse to draw lots, and hold over, what precedent will their action have upon future boards? Let the Supervisors draw lots for the long and short term, and comply with the law. Southern Pacific Route. SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAILWAY TIME TABLE. Ten Round Glove Contest between Southern California has thrown open wide the portals of the State to admit as guests the National Editorial Association, and has given our distinguished visitors a foretaste of what they may expect during their entire sojourn in the Golden State. It is not vainglorious boasting to say that California will entertain them as no other State in the Union would, for our reputation for lavish hospitality is so well established that what in any other State would be bragging is with us a plain and simple statement of facts which no one will dream of disputing. The itinerary of our guests has been so arranged as to permit them to see something of the greater portion of California and to get an idea, if nothing more, of the extent and variety of our resources, present and potential. They will be given a glimpse of all our principal industries in active operation, though of course they cannot see the ripened fruit and grapes nor the processes of making them marketable. That they must take on the word of their hosts and on their own judgment, formed from the acres of growing trees and vines. We are entitled to ask of our visitors that when they return to their homes they shall tell what they have seen and learned in California. We throw our grand and glorious State open to them from south to north; we make no attempt to put a fine gloss on anything for the occasion, and all we ask in return of these men of brains, culture and skill in writing shall present to their thousands of readers a fair, unexaggerated account of California as it is. There is room for much improvement, we must all frankly admit, and we do not ask that our guests paint all their pictures rose-colored. If California "Large Oaks from Little Acorns grow."
