Not Exactly a Claquer. At Chamberlin's the other night a party of distinguished rounders were exchanging gossip. Somebody began to tell of Eugene Field, of his various tricks and quips and witticisms. There was a story about his astonishing watch. It seems he went to the trouble of procuring an enormous silver watch, the size of a rutabaga turnip. Somewhere within the vast interior of this instrument he had placed a contrivance of such a nature that when one turned the stem as though to wind it up it gave forth a loud and rasping noise like unto that of ten locusts sawing their resounding legs at once. It was a startling and an awful racket, calculated to shock a nervous person and to irritate the most phlegmatic. Armed with this engine of torture, Field used to repair to theaters where dreadful and heartrending plays were in process of evolution, and then, at harrowing points, when the villain was unfolding his hellish plot, or the virtuous maiden defying a ruthless persecutor, and everybody was hanging in suspense upon the same, Field would unsheathe his watch and turn the crank with industry. He always broke up the tragedy.—Washington Critic-Record. Rubber and Rubber Goods. How much pure rubber is contained in the manufactured article? About 70 per cent. The best Para gum costs ninety-five cents a pound, so you see rubber boots and shoes cannot be made for nothing. In the smallest rubber shoe made there are about four ounces of pure rubber, and from that to probably four pounds in a pair of rubber boots. Old rubbers are ground up, lining and all, into what we call rag carpet, and it is used for insoles. The work is nearly all done by hand, and in the factories are employed young children, men and women. A bootmaker gets twenty cents a pair for making them, and a good man can turn out from ten to twelve pairs a day. There are between fifteen and twenty rubber boot and shoe, factories in the country, with a total capacity of over 150,000 pairs of boots and shoes a day. There are four factories having a capacity of over 25,000 pairs each, and one which has a capacity of 40,000 pairs. It is a mystery where they all go to.— TRANSPORTATION. A man without a hair on his head came into the barber's shop and sat down on a chair. Shavo or hair cut, sir?" said the attendant. "A shave, please," was the answer. When the shavo was finished and the baldheaded man left the customer who was getting his hair cut in the next chair said to the barber: "Why did you ask that man if he would have his hair cut? Did you mean to insult him? "Not at all," was the answer. "You see, it's like this: A baldheaded man is rather sensitive on that point. I treat this gentleman just as I do every customer who comes and sits down on the chair. He knows that he has no hair to be cut, and I know that he has no hair to be cut, and he knows that I know he has no hair to be cut. Nevertheless he likes to be treated as if he had a head of hair, and he comes regularly."—Detroit Free Press. A Remarkable War Record. "I served on General Butler's staff," said Port Warden Comstock; "was over four years in the army, but never fired a gun; was promoted for gallantry on the field and never was in a battle, and, in fact never saw a Confederate in arms, and I don't get a pension. I didn't carry away any spoons from New Orleans, but I've got Shakespeare, Byron and Moore in leather that I brought away from the Twiggs mansion where we made our headquarters while in New Orleans. If anybody got away with the spoons it would not be strange. The distinguished family that moved out for us left the family silver and everything else, and we moved in and took possession and used the abandoned property as we had, under the laws of war, a perfect right to do. We found the famous Twiggs swords there. They have long been on exhibition at Washington. The Twiggs heirs are trying to get all these things back, but they'll have as hard a time to trace that library, I'm afraid, as they will the spoons." New York Herald. Chicago's Parks and Parkways. The parks and parkways of Chicago are of a type the outgrowth of her natural landscape conditions and the characteristics of her people. Between the great lake on the east and the prairie main land on the west is a low, swampy tract diversified by sand ridges washed up by the storm waves and shifted about by the winds. The lake in some places encroaches upon the land, and at other points extends the shore by the forming of sand bars. Upon such a site was founded Chicago, and upon such a soil has she built her parks and boulevards. The wide streets were rescued as rapidly as possible from their primitive condition of alternate mud and dust, graded and laid with the most approved forms of pavement. The fondness of the people for riding and driving, that led them at an early day to provide so amply for public ways, caused the feature of fine driveways to be prominent when the public parks were to be made.—Harper's Weekly. Savings Banks' Depositors. At the close of the year 1890 the savings banks in the United States numbered 860, with savings deposits amounting to $1,524,844,500, divided among 4,258,893 depositors, being an average of $358.04. The depositors in the banks of New York state numbered 1,420,097, with deposits amounting to $550,066,657, being an average to each depository of $387.10. California is credited with the largest average sum to each depository, the amount being $787.74. The smallest average of all states is in West Virginia, where the amount is $48.19.—New York Recorder. Only a Demonstration.
