We are fast acquiring the reputation of living in the frostless orange belt—probably, as an enthusiastic orchardist at our albow remarks, the only one of the kind in the United States, if not in the world. Our oranges are untouched by frost, and to-day bring the highest price in the market. Then we have the most healthful climate in the world. There is no low, marshy land here, filled with death-dealing miasma, and malaria was never known. We have the health-giving sea breeze every day, tempered as it is with its twelve miles of travel from the sea. Herois where the invalid and health seeker may find a climate superior to that of the famed resorts of the Mediterranean. Small wonder it is, then, with all these advantages combined, that our city has been overrun with strangers and home seekers during the past few weeks. Our livery men report a busy season. The new comers are visiting the surrounding country, and real estate matters are looking up. Our real estate brokers tell us that the advance guard of speculators who were with us in the "boom" are abroad in the land, looking over the country and picking up bargain here and there. There is an awakening in real estate values that has not been equaled since the palmy days of the boom excitement. The country is going ahead. Perhaps we shall not have a recurrence of the speculative era, but the country is forging steadily ahead and filling up with new comers men and women of means who are of the class we most desire. It is sate to say to our land owners that they should not be over hasty to part with their holdings. The time is fast approaching when land values will double in this section, as we verily believe. Added to our other manifold advantages is the undisputed fact that we live in the frostless orange belt, perhaps the only one in the world. Those of the people of this county who have planted potatoes this season, and who of bulletins from the State Agricultural College giving instructions in sugar-beet culture, so that farmers in all sections of the State may plant small patches and demonstrate to the satisfaction of the capitalists and themselves that the State can grow beets rich in sugar, and at a cost which will make their growing profitable. Resolutions were also passed favoring the ceding of arid lands to the States, the continuing of the bounty on sugar and the admission duty free of sugar machinery. Senator R. B. Carpenter of Los Angeles, who is himself a hold-over Senator, referring to Mr. White's opinion, to the effect that an election must be called to fill the places of the hold-over Senators on account of the new apportionment, dissents from Mr. White's opinion, and contends that the hold-over Senators retain their officers despite the new apportionment, and that consequently no election will be called to fill their places. We think his point is well taken. The Los Angeles Evening Express was twenty-one years of age last Monday, and celebrated the event by appearing in a new and handsome dress of type. The Express is as wide awake and energetic as it is lovely in its new dress, and we are pleased to see it showing such evidences of prosperity. Meet Sugar. Unless the present Congress passes a bill very soon repealing the sugar bounty clause of the McKinley bill—which it is not at all liable to do—the sentiment in its favor will be so widespread that an attack upon it would be hopeless. Within a very short time the farmers on Long Island have decided to go into the cultivation of the sugar beet, and during the past week a beet sugar convention has been held in Denver and a permanent organization effected. If New York and Colorado are to be enrolled among the sugar-producing States there is no telling where the movement will end. The simple fact of the matter is that beet sugar may be made in almost any part of the United States, and that the bounty clause has so stimulated the industry that land is being planted and factories erected in a great many localities. It will not be many years at the present rate of progress before we shall able to dispose with imported sugar, and to sell domestic sugar at a price with which foreign sugar cannot compete. When that time comes the bounty will die a natural death, as it should, for it will have NEW ADVERTISEMENT Notice IS HEREBY GIVEN, THAT NO TO law, there will be held in the beim, county of Orange, state of California day, the eleventh day of April, 1892, a peculiar election, for the purpose of members of the board of Trustees for four years, and one member of the Board to serve for the remainder of the unce Joseph Bennerscheldt. The polls at said election shall be a rise of said eleventh day of April, 1892, kept open until five o'clock in afternoon; said day, when they shall be closed. The following is a list of nominations Clerk of the City of Anaheim in the order by law, and are arranged substitute order in which they will be by ballot: MUNICIPAL TICKET City of Annheim, State of N.Y., at the right of the name. TRUSTEE, LONG TERM. Chas, Otto Rust...Independence E. J. Pellegrin...Independence TRUSTEE, SHORT TERM. Plez James...Independence CLERK. Max Nebelung...Independence Those of the people of this county who have planted potatoes this season, and who will be able to market them early, have already a big bonanza on their hands. Potatoes will be a cash article in the Eastern market this spring, and will bring most satisfactory prices. The crop will be moving in a couple of weeks, and from that time on should be rushed to market with all possible speed. The Santa Fe the other day sent out thirty-five cars of vegetables and oranges to the East direct, in three special trains, and are now preparing to send out special trainloads of potatoes as soon as the crop is ready to move. While upon this subject it is pertinent to ask, Why is it that we do not raise more vegetables for shipment? We have in this valley positively the very best vegetable country that lies outdoors. We have tomatoes, green peas, string beans, asparagus, squash, cauliflower and the long list of other vegetable delicacies almost the year round. And we can get them to markets as early as any section of the State, and there is big money in them. This is indeed the vegetable Paradise, and our people should turn their advantages into coin. It can be done by raising early vegetables for the Eastern market. Last year our potato crop was worth not less than $150,000, and that amount of money would have been returned for the crop had the tubers been sent to market ahead of the early summer glut. Those of our citizens who shipped in time to avoid the glut received very handsome returns, while those who shipped later received nothing. The cardinal point in this business is the state of the market. The crop will be coming in shortly, and the Eastern market is getting ready for it. Ship early, and you will make barrels of money. Mr. Perry goes to Riverside to-day to investigate the new style of fumigating outfits now in use there, and which are said to do away with the most expensive part of the outfits at present in use. The new outfits do efficacious work; and dispense with the wagons, derricks, pulleys, ropes and the various other expensive paraphernalia that now makes fumigation rather a costly thing. Mr. Perry will remain in Riverside this evening to witness the new method of fumigation and will return to-morrow prepared to put the new idea into practical use here. Mr. Perry is a faithful and painstaking official and is doing his whole duty in the projected plan for the extermination of these scale. Convention has been held in Denver and a permanent organization effected. It will not be many years at the present rate of progress before we shall be able to dispense with imported sugar, and to sell domestic sugar at a price with which foreign sugar cannot compete. When that time comes the bounty will die a natural death, as it should, for it will have finished its work. It will not make any difference how completely beet sugar succeeds in the United States there will always be some people who will insist that the subsidy is a crime, and that the poor are being robbed for the benefit of the rich. It is entirely useless to argue with such people. They have a sovereign contempt for statistics and a fine scorn for facts and figures. They might buy cheap sugar for half a century, and yet they would persist in saying that the sugar bounty was a fraud on the American consumer. The only thing to do is to let beet sugar demonstrate the wisdom of the bounty system, as it is sure to do, and then every one will be convinced except the class referred to, who, as the old lady said of herself, are open to conviction, but would like to see the man who could convince her. OLINDA RANCH The Los Angeles Herald has a blooming correspondent in this town who sends it a letter semi-occasionally and who seems to be troubled with a couple of pet aversions here which, like a worm if the bud, feed on his damask cheek. The burden of this blooming correspondent's song is: We want another hotel here, and we must have another paper. This doleful iteration and reiteration would lead one unaqualified with the facts to believe that the people of this city are up in arms against Col. Everharty of the Commercial Hotel and the management of this newspaper. It is quite needless to say, however, that the fact, as everybody knows, are directly the reverse, the blooming and illiterate correspondent to the contrary and not withstanding. The Commercial is one of the best hotels on the coast—traveling men toll us so, and we have ourselves taken as fine meals there as one could wish to set down to. As to the other of this blooming correspondent's pet aversions, it seems to us that, if he would but cease to read his neither garments about it so, and get himself together, he might employ some of his spare time in starting a paper here himself. He would then at least know what it is to have splenotic gentlemen barking at his heels. Judging by his "tale of woe" one would think that Col. Everharty had kicked him out of his hotel, and that this journal had done him quite as bad a turn. At any rate, we hope he will be able to get his new hotel and new paper, if for nothing else than to stop his church whining.
