The Weekly Gazette. ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY. Henry Kuchel, Charles Kuchel, EDITORS AND PROPRIETORS. THURSDAY—MARCH 24, 1892. The city election occurs on April 11th. None of the regular canons nominees will have an opponent, except Frank Steadman, for Marshal William Schumacher having decided to enter the lists against him. Marshal Gade, the incumbent, has decided that there is not enough in the office to induce him to run for it, and retires. Mr. Steadman stands as the choice of the Citizens' Caucus, by which he was nominated by an overwhelming majority. He has been a resident of this city for many years, and is held in very high esteem. He entertains no doubt of his election. Chairman Henry of the Bankers' Association, has written Mr. Spence as follows regarding the report of the Bankers' Committee who recently examined our irrigation district: E. F. Spencer, Chairman Sub-Committee on Irrigation Bonds. Dear Sir: Having examined the copy of the report of your committee in the matter of the Anaheim irrigation district lands, I desire to say that I concur with the views of your committee as therein expressed, and do not see that you have left any ground uncovered. If future committees will perform their duties as thoroughly, great good must accrue to the state therefrom. This gives our bonds a gilt-edged reputation, and when bids are opened for their purchase, at the meeting of the Board in May, we hope to be able to say that the bonds will be sold at a satisfactory rate. They should bring par. An irrigating ditch that runs across the county road between here and Santa Ana a couple of miles below Miraflores is one of the indications of the advancement of the country. A large tract of previously unoccupied land in the vicinity has been cleaned of the brushwood and is being set to walnuts and other trees. Several hundred acres of this land was recently bought, at a very low price, by a company composed of Mr. Ford, pany years ago. It atrayed and was never found. The animals were seen in a region never before visited by white man. Last Thursday a gang of seventeen men blow up the dam at the head of the Centerville and Kingsburg ditch in Fresno county. After accomplishing this the party turned south and proceeded to the dam at the head of Emigrant ditch, just below Kingsburg. Charges of dynamite were also placed in it and soon the entire structure was blown to pieces. It is also stated that the party of men is supposed to have come from the lower Kings river country. No names are given and no motive is assigned for the act save in desolation at long-delayed litigation, which has involved the water rights of the lower Kings river country. Particulars are meagre and no arrests have been made. As a consequence of the deprudation the ditches are dry again and the reconstruction of the dams will entail considerable expense, admitting even that the work can be completed before the freshhets occur. LATER — The report that the canal dams in Kings river have been blown out with dynamite proves to have been entirely false. No damage or attempted damage has been done to any of the dams and the canals are all running bank full. There is an injunction against most of the canals in that part of the country; but this has been temporarily suspended and there is plenty of water. W.C.T.U. The third annual convention of the Orange County Woman's Christian Temperance Union will be held in the Baptist Church at Santa Ana, April 5, 6 and 7. Miss Mary Allen West of Chicago, editor of the Union Signal, will be in attendance and conduct a school of methods each afternoon, will deliver the lecture on the 6th, and will have charge of a question box. She is perfectly competent in every part of this especial line of work—temperance and social reform—and any and all are invited to attend this convention and to put questions in this box. All sessions are free, and the local union desires a full attendance of visitors. The W.C.T.U. everywhere wish the general public to know more of the work and the real character of it, believing it would be had for it, and a disposition to "lend a hand" in trying to lift up and bring about the true brotherhood of man. Remember the date, and do not fail to come and bring a friend. L. H. MILLS, County President. C.E.WAY, Recording Secretary. Hor First Query. Ford, the Santa Ana nurseryman, and others. Mr. Ford is now engaged in setting out the trees on a large tract of the clear land, and last week the new orchard was irrigated for the first time. This is a great improvement, as land in the neighborhood has heretofore been considered as next to valueless, on account of the brushwood covering it. The ditch brings water from the river a couple of miles above the clearing, and conducts a splendid stream onto the new land. The soil is first-class, and probably the time is not distant when the entire country in the neighborhood will be cleared and set to orchard. The splendid manner in which our Orange county boys have twice ingloriously trooned a team of professional baseball players from Los Angeles is evidence conclusive that they should be rewarded by our citizens with what they have long been asking for, an enclosed baseball park in this city. Baseball is the great American game. It is played in all the large American cities, and is to us what cricket is to the English. Compared with cricket, however, baseball is around used to be to the old-fashioned game of "two-old-cat." To use a ball player's trite expression, cricket "isn't in it" with baseball. We add emphatically, not a bit of it. We have some very promising players in Orange county, men who perhaps will one day grace a League diamond. Who shall say that they shall not? Certainly the Rusies, and Clarksons, and Tom Brown, and the Annsa and Ewings and Kellys and Wards of baseball—to say nothing of the honorable list of the rest of them—had no more pretentious beginnings at ball than most of our boys. And it seems the boys prefer to play here in Anaheim rather than in any other town in the county. But they tell us they are at a manifest disadvantage in playing ball on an open field. It costs money to get up a game, and expenses of visiting clubs run high. There is no means of meeting this expense except to "take up a collection" during the game. And to all ball players this practice is very repugnant indeed. Faney a player coming off the field, after making a home run, or participating in a lightning triple play or pulling down a fly after an exciting run, and passing around the hat to take up enough to pay for the expenses of the game! It is ridiculous! Now, our boys have demonstrated their ability to play ball. They have twice beaten our friends the professionals from Los An. All sessions are free, and the local union desires a full attendance of visitors. The W.C.T.U. everywhere wish the general public to know more of the work and the real character of it, believing if this were so a greater degree of appreciation would be had for it, and a disposition to "lend a hand" in trying to lift up and bring about the true brotherhood of man. With enclosed grounds a small admission fee charged spectators would arrange matters nicely. A series of games could be arranged during the summer, and we should have large crowds here to see them. Some of our enterprising citizens should lease grounds for a term of years, and then fence them and arrange them into a ball park. It would be an immense advertisement to the city, and would bring crowds here during the summer. Last Sunday there were not far from a thousand people in town. They left some money with us, had a good time, saw a splendid game of ball, and will come again. An enclosed ball park would bring money into town in several different ways, and the money taken in at the gate would be sufficient to pay expenses and pay off the small indebtedness for the improvement of the grounds. Let us have enclosed ball grounds. County division is being extensively talked of in all the papers of Southern California. San Jacinto, Pomona and Riverside are in the field for new counties. The members of a surveying party from Southern California, that arrived in San Diego a few days ago, report having seen two bands of wild horses on the plains between the Trinidad and Catarina valleys. The horses were extremely timid and when they caught sight of the men started off in an opposite direction at a furious speed, led by a magnificent roan. All the animals were of fine build, apparently of American stock, and one large gray, which could not run as fast as the others, is supposed to have belonged to the International Com... Increase of Coal Consumption. A peculiar case of increase in coal consumption is reported from France. An official engineer, having been called to investigate the cause of a considerable augmentation of the consumption of fuel by a large battery of boilers, discovered that the phenomenon was due to the presence of water in the smoke shaft. The measures which were taken to exclude the water have resulted in a saving of 16 per cent. in the annual coal bill.—New York Telegram. Something New in Courting.
