The Weekly Gazette. ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY. Henry Kuchol, Charles Kuchel, Editors and Proprietors. THURSDAY... MARCH 3, 1892. As will be seen by advertisement elsewhere, a meeting of stockholders in the Cooperative Beet Sugar Refinery is called for next Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Some very important matters will come before the meeting. The plan of organization is to undergo some radical changes, and the by-laws may be subjected to revision. In a word, the entire work of organizing the corporation must be gone over again, and be carried out on different lines. Whether the new corporation will be consummated as speedily as characterized our first attempt to bring the great enterprise is doubtful. However, we do not think there is a man in the valley who is not anxious to do what lies in his power to establish the refinery here. It is to the interest of every stockholder in the corporation to be present at the meeting. The vigorous manner in which our friends Frank Steadman and Big Anchorman Bentz paraned the thieves and robbers of Tuesday night we must confess completely takes our editorial eye. We have guarded from these robber raids for the past three months, and apparently nothing has been done by our officers to suppress them. In fact, the charge has been made to as that the reason why these robbers have not been apprehended is because there was "nothing in it." Be that as it may, our officers have been weighed and found wanting—they have proved themselves incompetent, negligent and inefficient. When the safe at the butcher shop was blewn open early Tuesday morning, and a ton of hay taken from the slaughter house during the night, our friends Steadman and Bentz decided to track the robbers and bring them to justice. Bentz was in hot pursuit of the robbers inside of an hour after the explosion, and he traced them all the way to Pomona. At this writing he has not returned, but we doubt not he will year. The company has 1200 acres under cultivation, and spent about $20,000 on improvements last year, and has a cash balance in the treasury of $20,000. Our esteemed contemporary the Redlands Facts, always bright and readable, quoting our reference to the pension infamy, says the day has come when one can refer to the pension legislation without having his patriotism questioned. We think so. One-half of all the money appropriated by the Government goes for pensions and the support of the pension bureau. The appropriation for this purpose equals those for the support of the legislative judicial and executive departments of the Government, for the sundry civil bill, for the army and navy, rivers and harbors, forts and fortifications, the postoffice and agricultural departments, the consular and diplomatic service and the various other departments of the government. Certainly it is time to call a halt. No, a man's patriotism is not questioned when he exposes this pension infamy. We should pension the old soldier, and pension him liberally too. There is nothing so noble as a disabled soldier. But the barnacles who have fastened themselves like leeches to the pension rolla, never shouldered a musket and never smelt powder, these are the fry we are after, and they must go. Weed out the pension bureau! Judgor McKinley has decided that the Tahiti orange trees imported by Moservo & Co., and whish for a long time past have occasioned so much discussion among the orchardists of the State, are a nuisance and must be destroyed. Huenna Park. We are happy to state that Rob Brydon, Jr., who has been ill for some time, has fully recovered. Dick Merrill has a fine-high stepping Hambletonian colt, the admiration of all the neighborhood. On his way home from Olive Heights the other day he became quite lively, threw his master out of the cart and made his way home. Mr. M. escaped with a few bruises. Miss Grace Spurgeon of Santa Ana, and Miss Carrie Field of Los Angeles, are guests of Miss Edythe Young. The Ladies' Missionary Society held a special meeting Tuesday. The collection was generous, though there were but few in NEW ADVERTISMENTS Notice to Subscribers In the Anaheim Co-Operative Beet Sugar Refinery A general meeting of the subscribers in behalf of Co-Operative Beet Sugar Refinery will in Kroeger's Hall Anaheim, on Saturday, M 2 o'clock P.M. B.V.GARWOOD, Soanaheim February 29, 1892. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT ANAHEIM CAL., February I take this method to acknowledge from Evergreen Council, No. 808, of their Legion of Honor, located at Anaheim, on finding the full amount of the Benefit Certificate late husband, Oscar S. Griffith, and certifying that she paid for the office prompt action in the matter and feel obliged for my prompt settlement of my cheerfully recommended order to all those sire to provide for their families. MARY E. GRIN have been weighed and found wanting—they have proved themselves incompetent, negligent and inefficient. At this writing he has not returned, but we doubt not he will bring the culprits with him if he lays his hands on them. Steadman traoked the hay thief into the Santiago Canyon, and yesterday went out to bring him to town. This is the first legitimate effort to capture these thieves that we have heard of. All other efforts have proved abortive. We hope the robbers may be apprehended and brought back. In the past three months there has been absolutely no effort to bring these men to justice. Let them be brought back. The law will attend to them when they come. What we desire to say in this connection is this: Dozens of citizens have spoken to us about the propriety of making Frank Steadman City Marshal and Constable. He was connected with the Sheriff's office in the State of Oregon for many years, and we believe he is just the man for the place. He is made of the right kind of stuff to send after a thief or robber, or any offender of high or low degree. Next month comes the city election. Frank Steadman is the man for City Marshal, if he will accept the office. Let us ask him to serve in that capacity and then let us elect him unanimously. We nominate Frank Steadman for City Marshal. A petition is in circulation asking the Board of Directors of the water company to cause the suit against the bondsmen of ex-Secretary Gardiner to be dismissed. The suit has been passing through its various stages in the Superior Court, having been delayed by the attorneys for thodofense with theaid of ove y technicality known to the law, until now it is in a fair way of being set for trial on its merits. The defendants are D. J. Kraemer and Leonard Parker. The former is bankrupt, and the latter has taken pains to place his property out of his hands. That is about the way the matter stands. We do not think there is any doubt about the water company recovering every dollar embezzled by the ex-Secretary. The case should be pushed against the bondsmen to the last ditch. Considerations of sympathy should have no place in the matter at all. Let the case against the bondsmen proceed. In response to an inquiry relative to the election of directors from the secretary of the Alta Irrigation District in Tulare county We are happy to state that Rob Brydon, Jr., who has been ill for some time, has fully recovered. Dick Merrill has a fine-high stepping Hambletonian colt, the admiration of all the neighborhood. On his way home from Olive Heights the other day he became quite livly, threw his master out of the cart and made his way home. Mr. M. escaped with a few bruises. Miss Grace Spurgeon of Santa Ana, and Miss Carrie Field of Los Angeles, are guests of Miss Edythe Young. The Ladies' Missionary Society held a special meeting Tuesday. The collection was generous, though there were but few in attendance. Mrs. Perry of Los Angeles and her sister, Miss Blanche Dewoy, are at the Dewoy Ranch in Centralia. Mrs. Kurtz was with them over Sunday. Miss Handon of San Francisco is also a guest of Merry. The Hotel has many transients. The Longfellow Social of the Y.P.S.C.E. held on Friday evening was quite a success. Miss Clark, the teacher of the public school, was the winner of a book of poems for recalling the most titles of poems from which quotations were taken. Goannie Archibald, a miss twelve years, was within one of the prize. The recitations and songs were very good. Miss McPherson of Tustin and Miss Field of Los Angeles assisted in the entertainment. Miss Clark sang "The Day is Dark and Dreamy." Miss Young, "The Day is Done," and Miss Roller, "Beware." Since Loap Year came in the Park boys find themselves "belles" of the season. Notice is hereby given that at a meeting held on the 6th day of February assessment of Two Dollar per share was the capital stock of the corporation paid before March 12th, 1892, to Richard Meier retiring at said corporation at his office street Anahiem, California. Any stock assessment shall remain on hand until March 12th, 1892 will be delinquently tried for sale at public auction, and until April pay the delinquent assessment, together with advertising and expenses of sale. RICHARD MEIER Secretary of the Anahiem Car Company JASNA INABA,PARK ROAD,DISTRICT OF ORANGE COUNTY,BAYSIDE,NORTHWEST,SAN FRANCISCO In response to an inquiry relative to the election of directors from the secretary of the Alta Irrigation District in Tulare county Attorney-General Hart has rendered an opinion, which is applicable to all irrigation districts in the State, to the effect that the Act of March 20, 1891, provides that an election shall be held in each irrigation district on the first Wednesday in February, 1893. This would seem to repeal the law requiring an election to be held on the first Wednesday in April, 1892, but as there is no provision for electing their successors until 1893 they will continue to hold over until the qualification of their successors. Section 79 of the Political Code, providing that every officer must continue to discharge the duties of his office, although his term has expired, until his successor is qualified, applies to irrigation districts as well as to other officers. Our Board of Directors will consequently hold over until next February. By that time we hope to be able to say that the district is in thorough working order. The annual meeting of the Western Boot Sugar Company was held in San Francisco on Tuesday. The following directors and officers were elected: John D. Spreckels, president; John L. Koster, vice-president; J. B. Stetson, A. B. Spreckels, W. C. Watson and M. P. Jones, directors. E. H. Shields was appointed secretary and John D. Spreckels & Bro. treasurers. During the year the purchases of sugar beets amounted to 20,000 tons. The total sugar product shipped was 2170 tons, averaging $64 per ton net, without bounty. The bounty from the government, which was $40 per ton, brought the company $86,511 for the past Money to Loan. In any amount. Securities bought and sold.
