The Weekly Gazette. ISSUE B EVERY THURSDAY. Henry Kuchel, Charles Kuchel, EDITORS AND PROPRIETORS. THURSDAY... FEBRUARY 25, 1892 The season has progressed so far that it is now impossible for our contemplated beet-sugar factory to begin operations in time for this season's crop. More's the pity. While the consummation of this great enterprise has not turned out as originally expected, still agencies are at work with a view to establishing the factory here in plenty of time for next season's crop. Mr. Capitain returned from St. Louis yesterday, and informs us everything is still couleur de rose. A stockholders' meeting will be held in a few days. Mr. Capitain telegraphed Mr. Fowler at San Diego last evening to come up for the stockholders' meeting. Mr. Fowler is expected up to-day. While the newly imported red-scale parasite is confidently expected to exterminate the scale once it becomes established here, yet we would advise our orchardists to prepare for a fumigating campaign against the pest as early as possible. This is the season of the year for cleansing fruit trees of all insect pests and fungi. The Horticultural Commissioners inform all orchardists that the months of February and March are the best months in the year for this work. Citrus trees infested with scale should be fumigated before the new fruit forms. We hope every orchardist in Anaheim and vicinity will get ready to fumigate. This will probably be the last year wherein this warfare against the scale will be carried on. Next season we confidently believe the new parasite will get in his "deadly work," and make the red scale quite a thing of the past. Dr. Johnson of the Peat Lands is in San Francisco in attendance upon the meeting of the executive committee of the Southern California Editorial Association, of which he is the member for Orange county. The committee holds a joint session with the executive committee of the Northern California Editorial Association and will formulate a programme of entertainment for the National faith to the plucky little winner of last year. Then there is Redlands, which has for two years stood an excellent second; Ontario, the merit of whose fruit is unquestioned; Orange, San Diego and a number of others who are decidedly in the fight. No sort of a contest can take place in Southern California so justly entitled to call out the liveliest interest of its people. The rivalry is a friendly one, but the prizes to be won or lost have an infinite deal more value than appears on the surface, and the competitors, as a rule, appreciate this fact. The "Parent Colony." Los Angeles Express. Situated 22 to 28 miles from Los Angeles is the "parent colony" and its enlarged boundaries, comprising Northam and Fullerton. The erstwhile far-famed vineyards of Anaheim are again coming to the front after remaining several years in "statu quo" on account of the mysterious disease termed by scientists "couleur." It is to be hoped that the wine and brandy interests of Anaheim will be long be revived again and exceed even their former magnitude. The general fruit, farming and petroleum interests of Anaheim and its outlying districts are now in a very promising condition, and the best sugar enterprise, just inaugurated, will doubtless add materially to the growth and prosperity of that section. JOHNSON of the Peat Lands is in San Francisco in attendance upon the meeting of the executive committee of the Southern California Editorial Association, of which he is the member for Orange county. The committee holds a joint session with the executive committee of the Northern California Editorial Association, which meets here a thousand strong in May. The Doctor's hobby in entertaining the visiting newspaper men is first to show them the peat lands (where they never have the grip and play baseball), and then how to take in the theater and an editorial banquet all in one evening. As will be seen by announcement elsewhere Mr. Isaac Lyons will open his new store in the Metz block on the 1st prox. He will carry a full and complete lins of groceries, provisions, hardware, crockery, glassware, etc., together with everything usually found in a first-class store. He will sell at prices as low as possible and guarantees satisfaction. Mr. Lyons is too well known to need introduction at our hands. He has lived with us for several years and is everywhere known as an upright and enterprising business man. We know he will do well in his business, as he is eminently deserving of it. Mr. Lyons is an old-time merchant, but since coming to Anaheim has devoted his attention to horticulture, and his place at Orangethorpe is one of the model places of the section. He cannot remain away from the cares of business, however, and he is now with us, with the purpose of opening a first class and finely stocked store. We wish him well. He is an old-time friend of ours, and we extend him a cordial invitation into our business fraternity. Adolph Thomass, so long connected with Mr. Langenberger's store, has taken a position with Mr. Lyons and has already entered actively into his labors in the new store. Like his employer, he needs no introduction to our readers. He is a painstaking and efficient clerk, and is sure to give satisfaction. W. S. Fish will be in charge of the hard ware department. He is also an old-time Anaheimer, well and favorably known here. Altogether the new store starts off auspiciously. Mr. Lyons is a believer in printers' ink. Read his advertisement elsewhere. COLONEL SCHREIBER was down from Los Angeles last Thursday evening and drilled Company G in the various maneuvers of the new tactics. After the drill the boys repaired to the supper room below, where a bountiful collation was served. The company have decided to drill twice a week thereafter, and have employed Colonel Schreiber as drillmaster. He will be down again this evening, when a full turnout should be present. The company was never in better condition, and is improving rapidly. Southern Pacific Route. SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAILWAY TIME TABLE. Trains pass Anaheim as follows: ARRIVE AT ANAHEIM. The State Citrus Fair of Southern California will open at Hazard's Pavilion in Los Angeles next Wednesday, March 2, for one week. The work of preparation is now sufficiently advanced to warrant the management in asserting that the Fair will greatly surpass its predecessors in the amount and quality of the fruit displayed, in the number and diversity of the sections represented, in the unique and suitable character of the designs employed for display, and least in the extent and elegance of the decorations. For the first time in any Citrus Fair all the counties of Southern California will be adequately represented. None are to be omitted. Orange and Ventura, which failed to come in last year, will occupy conspicuous places among the displays. Riverside, which was not present at the fair of 1891, is making preparations this year for an elegant display, and Celton and Highland will also put in an appearance. With a few small exceptions, all the localities which participated in the remarkable display of a year ago will be present this year, and the competition for places of honor in the premium list is very strong. Last-year Pomona won the first prize, but Riverside, the old favorite, was not in the race. Who is to win the coveted distinction in 1892? There are those who believe if Riverside comes down to Los Angeles in dead earnest the new aspirants will scatter out of the way. Others pin their "Simplest of Sewing Machines."
