COAST NEWS BOILED DOWN
Orange county's portion of the State School Fund amounts to $26,314.02.
U. S. Senator Folton is advised that Delaware peach growers have shipped large quantities of peach trees to California which are infected with the "yellows."
Twenty thousand peach trees recently brought from Nebraska to Santa Clara county have been quarantined for destruction because of being diseased with peach root borers.
F. C. Martin, superintendent of the Sharon estate—21,000 acres in Merced and Fresno counties—says the estate will build at once a large reservoir in the mountains at the head of the Chowchilla river in Merced county to store water to irrigate lands. The reservoir site covers nearly a section of land, walled by hills. A dam will be built across the outlet, furnishing large storage capacity.
The largest irrigation dams in the world are located in California. The Merced dam is one mile long, 90 feet high, 650 acres, capacity 5,500,000,000 gallons; the Sweetwater River dam, near San Diego, 90 feet high, 775 acres, capacity 6,000,000,000 gallons; and the Bear Valley dam in San Bernardino county, 60 feet high, 2550 acres, 10,000,000 gallons.
The total bonus paid by the Government last year on sugar produced in this state amounted to the sum of $161,402.76. Of this amount the China sugar factory received $38,982 on 1,946,600 pounds produced. The largest bounty was paid to the Watsonville factory, which turned out 4,340,596 pounds. In addition to all this there is a considerable amount of syrup now under seal at each of the factories, which will be manufactured into sugar when operations begin for the coming year.
Capt. Polhemus tells this story of something he saw recently in Nogales: The national boundary line runs through the main street of the town, and on the American side is close to the sidewalk. In front of a saloon is a box securely padded and with a cigar sign on it. Whenever the saloon customers call for cigars the proprietor steps out in front and across the boundary line to the cigar box, unlocks it and produces the required solosers. As the cigars are usually brought over the line a few at a time as needed, they thus escape duty and outwit McKinley.
Gen. D. E. Coon, commander of Heintzelman post, G. A. R., of San Diego, Senior Vice National Commander of the National Union of the Veteran Legion, on behalf of the foregoing order, has telegraphed President Harrison, asking permission to raise a brigade of troops for Chile. The barbarous treatment of American seamen in Valparaiso has aroused the spirit of "Gl'66" in the old Banking.

The barbarous treatment of American seamen in Valparaiso has aroused the spirit of '61-66 in the old soldiers to the highest pitch. Permission from the war department to enlist would cause the veterans to pour into San Diego.
The Attorney-General was recently asked to state whether the Big Rock Creek irrigation district is subject to assessment for State and county taxes. He replied: "Irrigation districts formed under the law are quasi public corporations organized for a public purpose, and the property is for the use of the public—that portion of the public and their lands within the district. Therefore, I am clearly of the opinion that the property of such irrigation district is not assessable, either for State or county taxes."
Tia Juana, which was demoralized by the floods of late winter, is now a divided town of three parts, Mexican Tia Juana, old Tia Juana and new Tia Juana. The new town site, located above high-water mark, has had many accessions during the summer and those yet located in the old town will take their chances with the rainy season, believing that lightning seldom strikes twice in the same place. Several residents of the old town have been anxious to remove, but have been deterred by lack of means, which should have been furnished by the appropriation already made by the State and which is now withheld for the process of legal advisement.
The counties of Los Angeles, San Diego, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Orange and Ventura have all pledged themselves to appropriate the full amount authorized by law to be expended at the World's Fair, and the various Boards of Supervisors, as soon as the local fair boards declare themselves in readiness, will furnish the money. The amount which the counties may expend is $77,500, and with this sum expended, as it is certain to be, by men zealous for the advancement of their section, the counties will be able to make a great show at Chicago.
The year 1891 has been a prosperous one for Orange county. Not In the history of the county has there been so much plowing of new soil, heretofore untouched by the implements of the husbandman, planting of trees and seeds and vines, and establishment of more important industries and general development than in the year 1891. Orange being strictly an agricultural and horticultural county, the greatest development has been made in the country in the increased acreage planted to wheat, corn, barley, potatoes, alfalfa, oranges, lemons, English walnuts, and in fact almost all varieties of both citrus and deciduous fruits.

At a meeting of the Southern California Bee Keepers' Association, held in Los Angeles January 6th, several interesting papers were read, and after a lengthy discussion the word "Southern" was stricken from the name, making it a State organization. The following officers were elected: President, J. F. McIntyre; Secretary, J. H. Martin; Treasurer, G. W. Brodbeck; Vice Presidents, L. T. Rowley, Los Angeles county; A. H. In addition, every county represented by membership is entitled to a vice president.
When a carload of oranges from the southern part of Old Mexico, bound for Chicago, reached Las Vegas, N.M., a few days ago, it was found that they had heated almost to the point of spontaneous ignition. When the doors were opened the smoke rolled out as if the interior of the car had been on fire. The car was run into the round house and left open all night; and still, next morning, the boxes were hot to the hand, so as be unpleasant to handle. It was found that fully one-third of the oranges had spoiled, and the boxes were wet from the escaping juice, as though water had been thrown upon them. After the boxes were taken out and allowed to dry the car was repacked and sent to Denver, where the oranges will be sold for all they will bring. The probabilities are that the loss occurred from neglect in old Mexico.
Special agent Evans of the Treasury Department, who has been investigating the smuggling of horses over the border from Mexico into San Diego county, says that about 3,000 horses have been smuggled within the past year. He also says that there seems to be no way at present by which this can be stopped. The smugglers are well do and influential people, and lots of cases are tied up. The line of demarration is purely imaginary, and there are several instances when custom officers have pounced down on some rancher only to find that the horses they expected to seize were quietly grazing twenty feet off Mexican territory. Of course the officers cannot legally cross the line to effect a capture. They can whistle and shout and fill their hats with feed, and in these ways tempt—the animals—to resmuggle themselves into this country; but if the horses will not come there is an end of it. A Mexican herder sticks his nose across the border line, observes the officers, and quietly leads the animals away from the chagrined officials. Next night the horses are taken over the line and by morning vapors have driven them out of the jurisdiction of the Collector, or else have so mixed them up with hundreds of other horses on some ranch that identification is out of the question.
