COAST NEWS BOILED DOWN The damage to the Pomona orange crop by last week's wind is estimated at 30 per cent. Ripe strawberries are being shipped from Los Angeles to St. Louis, where they sell for 40 cents a pound. The ground is yellow with oranges in some parts of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, that lay in the track of the recent great windstorm. Owing to the destruction of several church buildings and damage to others at Pasadena by the recent storm, congregations in that city of churches have had to double up. Richard Gird reports that over 4,000 acres will be planted to beets at Chino next spring. He has ordered 60,000 pounds of seed, all of which is engaged by the farmers. Frank and John Carlyle of Westminster captured a full-grown seal near Bolsa Beach the other day and brought it home. A few days after the seal made its escape, and was a mile away, traveling toward the ocean, when the boys recaptured it. The World's Fair will cost $21,000,000. Of this, $16,000,000 must be expended before only dollar of revenue comes in. The buildings will cost $13,000,000, and during the Fair $2,000,000 more will be required. The Awards Committee will absorb $500,000. They need the $500,000,000 loan from the Government to carry out the plans. California has 140,778 fig trees in bearing 231,360 young trees. Of oranges there are 523,400 bearing and 1,641,400 not bearing. Of almonds there are in bearing 446,464 and 403,460 young trees. Our peach trees reach the enormous number of 59,887,894 young trees and the supply of peach stock in the State does not equal the demand. The people of Capay, Yolo county, are much exercised over the appearance lately of a "wild man" in the woods near there. He has been seen frequently on the hills, but always takes to the brush when he discovers that he is being watched. The general impression is that he is a ingitive from justice, and an effort will soon be made to capture him. The Agricultural Experiment Station of the University of California has issued a bulletin showing the distribution of seeds and plants for the past five years to have been 37,478 plants and cuttings, and 29,993 ounces of seed. The plants consisted of twenty-six species, and the seeds of thirty-seven species, including a large number of varieties. The total number of individual applications for seeds and plants was 3,023, and during each year almost every county in the State was included in the distribution. A special election will be held in San Diego county on January 25th on the queues. PEACH YELLOWS. A Warning to Fruit Growers-Danger of Introduction to California-Warning to Intending Purchasers. By B. M. Lelong, Secretary of the State Board of Horticulture. WHEREAS We are informed that some nurserymen, through the scarcity of peach stocks for budding prunes, have contracted for large lots of Eastern peach stock for budding purposes for next season's delivery; and whereas there is great danger of introducing into this State the Yellowns a deadly disease to the peach, on said roots, and on peach trees imported from the Eastern States; and while they may not have the disease in the localities where they get this stock, but we having no guarantee that the Eastern growers may not get trees grown in infested sections to supply California demands; therefore, be it resolved That we warn intending purchasers of the danger of getting trees infected with the Yellowns and other tree diseases and pests not known in this State; and be it further Resolved That we call the attention of all the Boards of County Horticultural Commissioners and Quarantine Guardians throughout the State to this danger, and urge the rigid enforcement of the law in all such cases. Adopted at a meeting of the State Board of Horticulture, July 9, 1891. Buy house grown trees at the Anaheim Everygreen Nursery. Trees clean and free from scale. TIM CARROLL, proprietor. The plants consisted of twenty-six species, and the seeds of thirty-seven species, including a large number of varieties. The total number of individual applications for seeds and plants was 3,023, and during each year almost every county in the State was included in the distribution. A special election will be held in San Diego county on January 25th on the question of issuing $600,000 bonds to build two county roads. Half a million of the amount is for a road through Warner’s ranch to the desert and San Jacinto. This latter road is the one over which it is intended to offer any railroad desiring to enter the city from the east a franchise. It is thought that if the Southern Pacific could get a road-bed already graded the long-looked-for direct eastern outlet from San Diego would speedily become an accomplished fact. There is considerable opposition to the scheme in the country districts. The firm of A. Lusk & Co., the San Francisco dealers in canned and dried fruits, were attached on Monday by the Bank of California for $90,000 for money advanced. Three attachments for an amount aggregating $16,000 were placed by other creditors against J. Strauss, a wholesale dealer in glass and crockery, who had endorsed Lusk's paper to the amount of $45,000. Creditors of Straus, representing claims aggregating $66,000, met Saturday and decided to take this course to protest themselves. Among Straus's creditors are London and Paris banks. It is stated that Lusk owes a number of firms in addition to the Bank of California, but no statement of the firms' liabilities is yet made public. General Manager Burnett of the Terminal Railroad Company is in receipt of a letter from St. Louis which states that President Peabody, General Palmer and General Dodge, all of the Denver, Rio Grande and Western road, were in St. Louis on November 28th. Their intention was to spend six weeks in Mexico and then them to Los Angeles, which will bring them here some time early in January, which, by a coincidence, will be the time of the arrival of the Terminal road magnates; and by another coincidence, President Huntington of the Southern Pacific is expected to be in Los Angeles at the same time. What will be the result of the presence of all these notables cannot be predicted, but it is generally believed that there must be something here they want. The entire sugar output for California for this year amounts, according to the compiled figures of the internal revenue department, to 8,070,138 pounds. This is considerably larger than any previous year's product, and under the bounty clause of the McKinley bill, which provides for the payment of 2 cents a pound, the producers will realize $161,402 76 from the Government. This is quite an item in the way of liquidating the expense of a plant. While the figures given show the actual amount of sugar clarified and the bounty to be paid, they do not include the syrup and unclasses which the Government has allowed to be kept over until next year to give them time to precipitate their sugar. This will be a vast saving and will in crease the figures of this year's crop and the consequent bounty claims. The total receipts from sugar produced, including the bounty, amount to over $520,000. Taxes in the Irrigation District are now due and payable to me at my office on Los Angeles street. Taxes become delinquent December 28th, when the delinquent penalty will be added. I will be in my office for the collection of taxes during business hours until further notice. W. A. WITTE, Collector Anaheim Irrigation District. Wommer & Stock. In the clerk's office at Fresno last Saturday action was filed in which E. F. Hammers is plaintiff and the Selma Irrigation District is defendant. The purpose of the suit is to dissolve the district and end it. W. H. H. Hart, Attorney General, assisted by some of the ablest lawyers in Fresno, is prosecuting the case. The action was brought upon the complaint of E. F. Hammers, who is interested in the district and who is tired of it. In the complaint the leading facts in the history of the district are cited. It was formed April 28, 1890, and includes 200,000 acres of land, nearly all of which are in Fresno but partly in Tulare county. Three elections have been held upon the question whether $1,000,000 or $600,000 in bondashould be levied. In all three elections the bond proposition was defeated. The complaint alleges that there are servants and officers attending to the business of the district drawing salary and pay, and that no changes are apparent in the country. Irrigation has not been made any better than it was before. On September 15, 1890, a levy on members was made for $11,139.57 to pay expenses, and on October 6th a further levy of $4,269.69 for the same purpose was made. The sum and substance of it all is that the court is asked to exclude the district from corporate rights and dissolve it. Church Announcements.
