COAST NEWS BOILED DOWN
Of the 450 students at Stanford University 302 are Native Californians.
Forty thousand acres of the San Joaquin ranch are to be leased in small tracts.
The State Teachers' Association meet in Riverside December 28th. Eight hundred members are expected to be present.
The Ventura County Grand Jury has demanded that the Sheriff return to the Treasury $2,350 wongfully taken by him.
There are about two hundred thousand sacks of Lima beans stored at Ventura owing to the low prices offered. Last year they brought 5 and 6 cents, and this year only 2 and 3 cents are offered.
In view of the expected visitation of grasshoppers in some parts of the State next year, the State Board of Horticulture has arranged for a supply of parasites from New South Wales, to be ready for distribution in March.
The Secretary of the Vittucultural Commission reports that while fall returns have not yet been made, still the records received prove that the wine yield of this State for the year will be at least one-third less than that of 1890. The crop in 1890 was 21,000,000 gallons, while this year it will be below 15,000,000 gallons, of which 2,500,000 gallons will be sweet wines. Accurate figures will be received by the close of the year.
A young sequoia tree was shipped from Visalia last week to Chicago to be used in the forestry building of the World's Fair. The tree is twenty-eight feet long and eighteen inches in diameter at the biggest end. It was carefully wrapped in sacks to preserve the bark. It bears the inscription, "A young sequoia; bound for the World's Fair; don't whittle."
The Supreme Court has decided the act appropriating $300,000 for an exhibit of California products at the World's Fair to be valid. This amount is in excess of the appropriations made by many States, and no doubt would permit of a creditable display of our productions, but the appropriation will be more than doubled. Several counties have already taken advantage of the Act which permits counties of a certain class to appropriate a sum for this purpose, and the grand total promises to be over half a million.
The Catholic Orphan Asylum and School on Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, was dedicated and formally opened last Wednesday with imposing ceremonies. The building is situated on a high bluff in Boyle Heights, alongside the river, and is visible for a distance of over twenty miles in almost every direction. There are accommodations for 400 children and nearly 300 are at present enrolled. The cost of the building was about $140,000. The school is under the charge of the Sisters of Charity.

Last Thursday evening shots were heard at the San Bernardino schoolhouse and a minute later the school-bell rang. The fire department and a crowd of citizens surrounded the school building, when it was learned that Prof. Alexander Frye, Superintendent of city schools, had visited the school building to do some work. On going into the building he saw a light upstairs. He found a pile of paper against the stairs leading to the belfry on fire. He also saw a man whom he grappled and downed. Another man then pulled him off and kicked him in the back. The man who was down fired four shots at Frye, one taking effect in the left arm. Frye finding that he had two ruffians to contend with, backed out and the villains escaped. Frye then turned the hose on the fire and rang the bell. The fire was out before the fire department arrived. Frye's wound is slight. During the past year three schoolhouses have been burned at San Bernardino and attempts were made on twomore.
A good story is going the rounds of the press about Senator McComas of Pomona. The Senator has a young vineyard on his ranch in the neighborhood of his town. The succulent shoots of the vines have proven a great attraction to the rabbits of the surrounding country and their depredations have made life a burden to him. It occurred to the Senator that perhaps the encasing of the vines in paper bags would curtail the assaults of the frisky jack rabbits. So he straightway made a requisition upon the State Printer at Sacramento, who, as he was aware, stood in wholesome awe of certain myterious political influences. The State Printer was willing enough to oblige, but stated that it was against the law to send out any material from his office which did not contain printing. The Senator wired him just to print on the sacks, "All rabbits are warned not to molest these vines," and to send them along. The bags arrived in due time, and now they say not a rabbit is to be found in the vineyard.
Stories of Dusis.
Some duels that never came off are good in their way. Two Georgia gentlemen had a dispute over a piece of worthless land and agreed to meet, each to wear a piece of white paper over his heart to serve as a bull-s eye, the survivor to have the privilege of cutting off the other's head and setting it on a pole on the disputed land. Before the formal meeting came off, as arranged for, a casual encounter settled it, and the younger was brought home and buried on his mother's plantation outside of the disputed boundary.
Some American duels with knives are reported, the parties being lashed together by their left wrist. One Illinois man, who was challenged by a Mississippi, caused the child of the sunny south to back down by naming those terms. In another sectional difference a Yankee fixed on axes in a locked room as the weapons and conditions, and the meeting did not come off. A little consternate master's clerk, who barely escaped

The Chilean Minister of Finance thinks that the solution of the financial question is easily within reach. Balmaceda made illegal issues of about $30,000,000 and there has been considerable disorganization and waste by war and hindrance of industry. The most difficult matter will probably be the settlement of claims for injury to foreign interests. England is understood to have a little bill for about $60,000,000.
