STATE NEWS BOILED DOWN
An Ontario man shipped a lot of lemons to Chicago last week, and expects to get $6 a box for them.
The shipments of fresh deciduous fruits from this State the past year amounted to 3,500 carloads.
And now they say American workmen are boycotted at the Chino sugar factory. How about that, Gird?
A Paris wine dealer writes to San Francisco that the total production of California's Zinfandel could be sold in Paris.
General Freight Agent Smurr of the Southern Pacific Company estimates this season's orange crop in California at about 5,000 carloads.
Judge Smith of Stockton refused to admit an Italian to citizenship the other day because the man could not speak English and had no idea what citizenship meant.
A large water storage enterprise is about to be commenced in the northern part of Los Angeles county, in Aliso canyon, about three miles from Acton, where the Solodad Storage Dam and Revervoir Company will build a dam 150 feet high, 800 to 900 feet long, and with a capacity of 8,000,000,000 gallons.
The California Fruit Association sent out from Vacaville Friday morning a special train of fifteen cars of dried fruit consigned to Barnett Brothers' Company, Chicago. The train was decorated. The people gave it a send-off. The shipment is valued at over $30,000. Over 100 cars would have been required to ship the same fruit green.
The annual meeting of the American Poultry Association is to be held in Los Angeles in February. This is an important society, and a visit of a large number of its leading members to this coast ought to profit us. For some reason difficult to be defined the poultry industry in this State has been strangely neglected. Last year $700,000 worth of eggs were imported into California.
A petition praying the President to appoint M. M. Estee to the vacant cabinet position was forwarded last week from Fresno to San Francisco. The petition had been stealthily circulated among Republicans known not to be friendly to Mr. Estee, and was largely signed. It is said the petition is being circulated in a similar manner in every county in the State.
The last of the Pomona raisin crop was taken from the trays last week and is ready for packing. There has been no season so favorable for raisin-drying and packing in Southern California since 1884. Reports from all the raisin-growers is to the effect that less than 2 per cent of the large crop has been lost in the drying process. Thus far thirty-two carloads of raisins have gone East from Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Diego counties this season.
narrow construction put upon the Act by the Controller would suppress almost all the legislation of this State in the interest of public institutions. If the Supreme Court decides the action of the Controller proper, then the introduction of the ramie plant into California would fall to the ground. At least no benefit would be deprived from the expenditures heretofore made for its introduction. The case was submitted on briefs without argument.
There is a lawsuit pending in Lassen county, involving about eighteen plaintiffs and 120 defendants, over water rights on the Susan river. The plaintiffs, most of whom are old and wealthy settlers, located on the lower end of the river many years ago, and have been using the water for irrigation all these years. In the march of civilization hundreds of people have settled along the upper part of the river, and very naturally diverted some of the water. Thus the amount flowing to the lands of plaintiffs grew less year by year. There is money on both sides, and no doubt the case will not end until settled by the Supreme Court.

A Visalia paper says that in the spring some 360,000 sheep swarm from the Tehachi mountains, pass east to the Kern river into Tulare county and in the fall pass into Fresno county. The flock belongs to some Basque Frenchmen, who do not speak English, and where they pay taxes is unknown, but the sheep are fast reducing the once rich pasturage of the mountains to the condition of a desert, and thousands of sheep belonging thereabouts will have to be driven to the Mojave desert and supplied with water by pumping to carry them through till the grass comes again.
The Supreme Court has rendered a decision declaring the law appropriating $300,000 for the World's Fair valid. The Supreme Court is rushed with business, so much so that the justices have been unable to draw their salaries for the past months of August, September and October, because of their inability to comply with with that provision of the Constitution which prescribes that no judge of the Supreme Court shall be allowed to draw or receive any monthly salary unless he shall take and subscribe to an affidavit that no cause in his court remains undecided that has been submitted for decision for a period of ninety days. This the justices cannot make affidavit to; hence no salary.
An interesting feature of the Ohio colony, which has bought 640 acres of land near Chino and will occupy it next week, is the phase of a co-operative system to be introduced. The colony will erect a cooking-house and a washing-house which will do that character of work for all the families. Food will be delivered three times daily in wagons. All provisions will be purchased by the head of the colony and sold to members at cost. Further than this every family will look out for itself. The colony will number about 400 persons, the men having various trades, and not all of them being farmers. The land was sold to them at $200 per acre with water.
Secretary Scott of the Viticultural Commission is receiving reports from the various wine-producing districts of the State regarding this season's wine crop. In the southern part of the State very little dry wine will be produced this year, the production being limited mostly to sweet wines and brandy. The same is to be said of Fresno county and counties to the north. The dry wine yield of Napa, Sonoma, Solano and Santa Clara counties and the Livermore valley will average one-third short, or about 7,000 gallons less than the average yield. The sweet wine production is larger this season than last, and the same can be said of brandy. Clarence Wetmore is in the southern part of the State for the purpose of investigating the vine disease and damage done to last year's crop.
Work has been suspended for the rainy season on the great Colusa county irrigation canal. The canal at present extends from the Sacramento river to a point below Williams, a distance of about forty-five miles.

Work has been suspended for the rainy season on the great Colusa county irrigation canal. The canal at present extends from the Sacramento river to a point below Williams, a distance of about forty-five miles. The work is now complete, except at two points, one near Stony Creek and the other in the Glenn estate. These two pieces amount to about 300,000 cubic yards of earth to be moved, at an expense of $36,000, which with the right of way over the Glenn estate, $26,000, is the estimated balance yet to be expended to finish the work. This will require two months' time, and Contractor Elliott says it will be finished and water running through the whole length by July, 1892.
Ex-Mayor Workman of Los Angeles, one of the directors of the Terminal railroad, is in receipt of a letter from Colonel W. C. Dodge, general manager of the Rio Grande Western Railroad, dated Denver, November 11th, which states that the visit of the officials of the Rio Grande Western, who were to reach Los Angeles last week, will not take place until early next month. President Palmer and Vice-President Peabody are in Europe, having been detained there on business connected with the new road from Salt Lake to Los Angeles. The arrival of the railroad man is awaited here with much interest, and they will receive an impressive public reception. It is the general belief that the completion of this transcontinental road by way of Salt Lake would give us a boom somewhat similar to that which followed the opening of the Santa Fe line in 1886.
W. H. Murray, State Superintendent of Ramis Culture, has appeared before the Supreme Court on an appeal against the decision of Controller Colgan, who refused to audit the salary claims presented by Murray on a $10,000 appropriation passed by the last Legislature. Controller Colgan holds that the Act creating the office provides for more than one item of appropriation and is therefore void under the Constitution. One item in the Act, he continues, is to give a bounty to encourage the cultivation of ramie, and another item is to pay the salary of petitioner. The Attorney-General rendered an opinion, in response to an inquiry of the State Controller, before this action was commenced, wherein he held the Ramie Act to be constitutional. Murray is conducting his own case and argues in his brief that the
